summary To stimulate all five senses through a realistic representation, audio plays a significant role. Architectural representation in digital media primarily falls in the area of visualization. Recent developments in simulation of 3d animation, lighting effect, material options and texture quality demonstrate that technology has come to a satisfactory level for representing realistic environments. But, at the same time, designers may not have paid due attention in regards to simulation of quality audio in architectural representation, particularly in 3D animation. “Surround Sound” or technically, the Dolby Digital and DTS technology has been used for entertainment purposes in film and movie production for a long time. As realistic materials and lighting increases the value of reality, sounds and sound effects too can add value to represented virtual reality architectural environments. Surround Sound technology simply delivers different signals from a 360-degree range. The reason beneath this is to break the sense of looking towards a single direction. Ideally, the audio should come from the direction of the visuals on the scene. Synchronization of both visual and Dolby Digital audio can enhance the experiential quality of an audio-visual representation. At the same time, it can break the notion of audio coming from a single direction. This paper suggests and demonstrates the technique of combining surround sound in digital 3D architectural animation for the purpose of enhancing its visual and sensory quality.

summary Design visualisation is an essential aspect of virtually every form of design enquiry. The effects of potential environmental interventions may be simulated in order to gain the types of insights, which cannot be acquired easily from two-dimensional notations. Three-dimensional representations may be generated for very different reasons. The most direct form of design imaging is traditionally for the benefit of the designer him/herself, in order to test whether the working concepts offer fitting solutions to the complex array of design conditions such as context, programme and feasibility. Alternately, images may be generated for the benefit of communication, in order to offer insights into the expected workings of a particular proposal (possibly including alternatives). This may lead to greater understanding and possibly to reaching consensus amongst different ‘actors’ involved in the design and realisation process. In many cases the results of such visualisation studies contribute to ‘bridging the gap’ between the professionals and other parties involved more indirectly in design decision-making or the appraisal of the proposals. Designers can use distinctly different methods when going about such imaging procedures. Their choices for particular techniques may depend on their familiarity or the availability of certain media devices. Being confronted with new modelling and/or visualisation instruments can stimulate the interest in fresh approaches. In this respect, the design education environment can play an important role in not only teaching ‘proven’ applications to future designers, but also in creating a platform for the active development of innovative approaches to the design visualisation practices: education as a ‘laboratory’ for new insights and potentially a ‘breeding ground’ for the extension of the designer’s instrumentation. This contribution documents the experiences gained in some ten years within an educational application, involving active use of design driven media applications. The emphasis lies on the evolvement of techniques for eye-level imaging, whereby use can be made of different types of models: physical scale models as well as digital, virtual models. Changing attitudes towards dynamic and serial vision are considered, whereby storyboard approaches on the level of integral presentation are considered. By analysing a selection of cases and their underlying approaches an indication is given of the changing attitudes and combinations of multimedia techniques, which offer opportunities to design visualisation and communication.

summary Designing is largely a process of (inter)active imaging. The evolvement of a design concept from preliminary design proposal towards spatial and material environment generally follows an uncertain path through uncharted landscape; a journey of exploration which requires both rational and creative consideration, frequently involving the interchange of information within a design team and collaboration with representatives from different contributing disciplines. Designs are conceived, worked out and specified step by step (roughly speaking from ‘rough to fine’) in iterative design ‘loops’. All the time the designer tries to determine which ‘course’ should be taken, by considering reference material, by reflecting on conceptions developed previously and by generating specific options aimed at furthering the ‘concretisation’ of the end product. In the course of such a trajectory, visual information is continually being developed, selected, tested, and subsequently either discarded or perfected. From early times architects have been considered not only as knowledgeable ‘experts’ in the field of building as a craft, but also as ‘creative directors’ of such development processes. The architect should be capable of not only conjuring up visions of the future spatial and material form of the building, but also of conveying these to the other ‘actors’ involved in the initiation and building process. Such ‘sharing’ of information is necessary in order to generate sufficient understanding, consensus, enthusiasm, as well as means. To become more than ‘figments of the imagination’, the designer’s ideas need to be ‘pinned down’ (even if they are not yet entirely finished) and communicated by using some form of reliable – and preferably readable – ‘language’ for design development and communication.

summary Geometry regarded as a tool for understanding is perhaps the part of Mathematics which is the most intuitive, concrete and linked to reality. From its roots as a tool to describe and measure shapes, geometry as ‘the space science’ , has grown towards a theory of ideas and methods by means of which it is possible to build and study idealised models, not only from the physical world but also from the real world. In graphic architecture thought, geometry usually appears as an instrumental support for project speculation. Geometric procedures are presented as representational resources for the graphic testing of reflection and for the exposition of ideas in order to build a logical order as regards representation and formal prefiguration. The fast rise of computing in the last decades has made it possible for architects to work massively and in a graphic and intuitive way with mathematical representations of tridimensional geometry, such as the NURBS . These organic surfaces of free shapes defined by vectorial curves have allowed access to a rapid generation of complex shapes with a minumum amount of data and of specific knowledge.

The great development of modelling achieved by the digital media and the limitations in the technical and building areas and in the existence of materials which are coherent with the resultant shapes reveal a considerable distance between the systems of ideation and simulation characteristic of the computing era and the analogous systems of production inherited from the slow industrial development. This distance has been shortened by CAD/CAM systems, which are, however, not very accessible to the architectural field. If we incorporate to the development of these divergent media the limitations which are distinctive of the material resources and procedures of the existent local technology, the aforementioned distance seems even greater.

Assuming the metaphor of living at the threshold of two ages (industrial-computing, analogical-digital, material-virtual) and the challenge of the new conceptual and operational tools in our field, we work in the mixture, with no exclusions or substitutions, proposing (by means of the development of informational complements) some alternatives of work to approach the issue under discussion from the Architecture Workshop.

summary SwarmCity is being developed as a micro-simulation model, simulating the location-choice behaviour of a population of households, retailers, firms, developers, etc. reacting to an urban plan. The focus of SwarmCity lies –in a first phase- on the decision-making procedures of households, conceptualised as a series of three processes: awakening, search and choice. The methodology used to implement these processes makes use of life-time utility and decisionanalysis trees. The final model should work as a scenario-analysis tool, allowing planners, developers, retailers and municipalities to test interventionproposals, to evaluate legislations, to measure the attractiveness of services, to quantify residential mobility, etc. This paper illustrates the state of the art in household location-choice modelling and introduces a first attempt in developing a conceptual framework.

summary Contemporary computer techniques offer many new opportunities to engage citizens into the planning process. There are new possibilities of interaction, introducing an observer into the “game”. The research project presented in the paper assumes the use of a visual 3D language which consists of a series of schematic types of buildings. They form a language which is easy to understand both by professionals and by laymen. Understanding is the very first step towards getting convinced by the ideas presented. The next step is interaction - the user’s action induces the response of the system. The solution proposed by the user meets an evaluation from the part of the system which evokes the user’s interest - in the case presented here the evaluation introduces the simulation of future state of the site. The problem posed is to find out the best way to convince people that some places are less or more suitable for settlement, depending on the media present there, distance from the urban areas and the environment protection. The attempt to create a tool which could be helpful in an educational process is described in the paper. The idea is to prepare a form of a master plan record which uses the visual 3D language and may be accessed via World Wide Web pages. The paper formulates the assessments for the software described above and examines the possibility to create an application. The trial to prepare a web based service using the flash and shockwave technology is presented.

summary This paper presents the preliminary results of an architectural design studio research developed with undergraduate students of UNISINOS architecture course. The aim was to search for a tool that potentially would allow them to use artificial lighting as element of architectural composition and characterization of the project. The architectural design could be defined as a virtual anticipation of the real architectural object. Being previous to the construction of the architectural object, it is an exploration of a possibility of existence of that same object that is figured in the shown form. As result, the issue of representation takes the status of logical proposition, from which is possible to verify if the tentative solution proposed by the designers could actually have an existence in the world and, if it.s true, fully evaluate its potential. This way it would be possible for the designers to also critically reflect about their own design practice.

title Lightscape - an exploration in interactive lighting

summary The aim was to provide a theoretical approach to the lighting project undertaken for the xCube group work. The nds2004 students had decided to build an interactive, computeroptimised structure as their final project, where lights, sensors and textured surfaces were to create an interactive experience for the visitor. For various reasons the interactive aspect was abandoned. The idea to work on a light(-ing) object came up when I discovered a little device called the Barionet™. This device allows you to control an on/off switch remotely, through a web interface or through programming. That was it! The ip_lamp (…its first name): a small object that has its own IP address, and therefore can be accessed via the internet. Turn it on or off… This evolved into the _lightscape where 2 interacting lights send each other data about the other (distance from a wall or number of people for example). The atmosphere of a room becomes dependant of what is going on in another… This work is also an attempt to develop a pluridisciplinary approach to an architectural project by making use of the many tools available to the postgraduate students: programming a simulation in Flash, experimenting with different hardware interfaces or rapidly manufacturing a light box on the 3-axis mill. A cross-over project in a (modest) way.

This program is about upgrading knowledge and user capabilities in Information and Communication Technologies (IT) of our academic team, in order to improve our pedagogical model, and to include these IT into the learning-teaching process for Architecture, Design and Geography. Considering that new technologies are part of the contemporary professional development and they are already included in high school in Chile, they should be part of the university academic environment as well, as an important tool and a link between generations, careers, and stages of education. Estimulating a cultural transformation process in the academic team, promoting transversal network thinking and to generate a base of knowledge in digital culture are our main objectives. This is our contribution to a new academic model, which we need in deed.

summary In this paper we are drafting the outline of a framework for a Multi Agent System (MAS) for the support of Collaborative Design in the architectural domain. The system we are proposing makes use of Machine Learning (ML) techniques to infer personalized knowledge from observing a users’ action in a generic working environment using standard tools such as CAD packages. We introduce and discuss possible strategies to combine Concept Modelling (CM)-based approaches using existing ontologies with statistical analysis of action sequences within a domain specific application. In a later step, Agent technologies will be used to gather additional related information from external resources such as examples of similar problems on the users hard disk, from corresponding work of team-members within an intranet or from advises of expert from different knowledge domains, themselves represented by agents. As users deny or reward resulting proposals offered by the agent(s) through an interface the system will be enhanced over time using methods like Reinforced Learning.

summary One of the most important aspects architects need to consider fairly early on is that of energy saving, cost, thermal comfort and the effect on the environment in terms of CO2 emissions. At present, during the early design stage of a building, different options are assessed using simple tools (tables, graphs and software) that contain a large number of assumptions the very nature of which can bias choice or possibly lead to an inappropriate solution. It can be argued that the only way to provide a rational assessment of options is to use calculation methods that represent in detail the physical processes involved; this usually involves the use of dynamic thermal models. Furthermore if this tool is also used during detailed design it would introduce a consistency that is normally absent from the analytical design process. Many designers are of the opinion that, because not all details are known, then such tools are not suitable for application at early stages in the design. This view can be challenged because, even at the concept stage, a great deal is known about a building. This paper aims to show that a general description of a building can be used to generate sufficient data to drive a valid analysis using a detailed thermal model at the early sketch stage of the design process. The paper describes the philosophy, methodology and the interface developed to achieve this aim. The interface guides the user through the input process using a series of screens giving options for keywords used to describe the building; comprehensive default data built into the software are then attached to these keywords. The resulting data file is a building description that is the best possible interpretation of the design intent. This can then be used to assess options and guide towards a final design.

summary In this paper we give an account of our development of a hardware machine-readable cellular automata model for simulating dynamic patterns of use and adaptation in vernacular high-density architecture. In a hypothetical architectural setting that draws its formal expression from illegal façade extensions in Hong Kong and its conceptual framework from the Open Building movement, we examine state evolutions in monotonous matrices of adaptable residential units. The primary objective is to gain a better understanding not only of architectural form but also of dynamic processes in the built environment and hence of the factors that cause adaptive architectures to tend towards different types of overall attractor states. The paper gives a discussion of the project’s theoretical background as well as a detailed description of the hardware model and its modes of application.

summary The study describes some of the aspects tackled within a current Ph.D. research where architectural applications of constructive, structural and organization processes existing in biological systems are considered. The present information processing capacity of computers and the specific software development have allowed creating a bridge between two holistic nature disciplines: architecture and biology. The crossover between those disciplines entails a methodological paradigm change towards a new one based on the dynamical aspects of forms and compositions. Recent studies about artificial-natural intelligence (Hawkins, 2004) and developmental-evolutionary biology (Maturana, 2004) have added fundamental knowledge about the role of the analogy in the creative process and the relationship between forms and functions. The dimensions and restrictions of the Evo-Devo concepts are analyzed, developed and tested by software that combines parametric geometries, L-systems (Lindenmayer, 1990), shape-grammars (Stiny and Gips, 1971) and evolutionary algorithms (Holland, 1975) as a way of testing new architectural solutions within computable environments. It is pondered Lamarck´s (1744-1829) and Weismann (1834-1914) theoretical approaches to evolution where can be found significant opposing views. Lamarck´s theory assumes that an individual effort towards a specific evolutionary goal can cause change to descendents. On the other hand, Weismann defended that the germ cells are not affected by anything the body learns or any ability it acquires during its life, and cannot pass this information on to the next generation; this is called the Weismann barrier. Lamarck’s widely rejected theory has recently found a new place in artificial and natural intelligence researches as a valid explanation to some aspects of the human knowledge evolution phenomena, that is, the deliberate change of paradigms in the intentional research of solutions. As well as the analogy between genetics and architecture (Estévez and Shu, 2000) is useful in order to understand and program emergent complexity phenomena (Hopfield, 1982) for architectural solutions, also the consideration of architecture as a product of a human extended phenotype can help us to understand better its cultural dimension.

summary The COVID-19 pandemic has made most schools, universities, and gathering spaces fully virtual. Commonly used communication platforms such as Zoom, Skype, and Microsoft Teams are limited in recreating physical interactions and offer mostly static interfaces with limited occasions for spontaneous encounters. This project creates a space that seeks to address this issue, first through the digitization of familiar physical spaces, and then through their augmentation via WebXR technologies[1]. A gamification strategy is adopted, where users can virtually learn, collaborate and socialize through personalized avatars within a dynamic and multi-sensorial digital environment. In this paper, we present a completed prototype that is currently being tested at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. The school of architecture has been digitized and experientially augmented thanks to an asymmetrical system that offers rich modalities of interaction through different platforms. The project builds upon the wide experiential potential of digital platforms, otherwise not possible in reality, and implements a customized multi-modal user interface (Reeves et al. 2004).

summary The problems of storage of local cultural heritage in digital databases, are reported in the paper. An exemplar case of RuralXML framework is presented. Three main groups of challenges relating to “culturally rich” databases are recognised:1. Estimation of the significance of digital databases for supporting design process, educational needs and scientific investigations;2. The conceptual problems with digital representation of “the paper heritage”3. The technical problems related to the architectural databases.The most important aspects of the problem are mentioned, as a background to a discussion about the reciprocal dependencies between technology and local values, i.e. how technology supports acting with the local architectural heritage, and how “cultural significance” values technology. We claim that digital technology not only enables storage and management of such data, but it also adds a new dimension to the design, making it “locally-sensitive” and oriented towards context by means of employing digitally archived architectural data. The accessibility to information about the “local” architecture heritage is important for local as well as global design. The premises for such statements, are presented.

summary The notion of .scale., in architecture, has a variety of meanings. In general, it refers to a graduate serie of symbolic elements that hold the place for real elements. It stands in close relationship with the notions of .model. and .representation.. A thorough discussion of the concept of scale should start with an analysis of the way in which we perceive natural objects, specially architectural objects. This perception appears as continuous but is not: there are some stages that can be identified as belonging to some .natural visual scale.. Traditional graphic scales do not relate clearly with this natural scale due to old technical problems. So the discussion proceeds towards the notion of multiresolution and how the concept of scale should be developped to cover properly the characteristics of virtual models, attempting to provide a conceptual framework for this discussion.

summary This research utilizes vision-based affective recognition and sensing technologies, which are tested in order to interpret what emotional moods people experience with visual spatial images; these tests help to automatically provide feedback on the natural ways to manipulate affective intelligent communication. That is, the primary objective of this research is to realize an adaptable architectural virtual reality (VR) model whose color attributes can be changed dynamically according to the identified emotional state of the user. Eventually, this research addresses how to capture a specific user’s emotional states through the system and use it for modifying an architectural VR model, mainly for its color adaptation. In the applicability process, this system proposes towards user oriented smart environment such as the colors of an interior space are dynamically changed according to a characteristic affective response of a user.

summary The purpose of this paper is to report efforts towards the construction of a model for urban spatial dynamics simulation, based on multi-agents and space. The underlying idea is to have urban space producers and consumers operating in a two-layer, two-circuit model. The first layer holds urban space and its successive transformations; a second layer contains agents related to space; the first circuit simulates space production, and a second one simulates space consumption. Relationship between layers is represented as objective spatial features that agents are submitted to (the machine) and subjective meanings agents attach to each spatial feature (the ghost). While space works always in the same way, meanings vary according to each agent’s background and context. Relationships between circuits are represented by means of a market game in which producers try to maximize their profits by gambling with their risks, whereas consumers try to foresee the spatial distribution of local externalities that maximizes their utilities and investments. Urban Spatial Features are captured through centrality and land use patterns; every single agent’s action leads to changes in both patterns. Producers’ profit is a function of built form location. Consumers’ local externalities are concerned basically with present and future services. The model iteration is twofold: first it generates and allocates a number of built forms within a previously determined spatial system (a cellular matrix, for example), and second it allocates users to built forms. Population of users have its social profile and growth rate externally determined. Built form allocation is decided on the basis of a combination of profitXrisk perspectives. Users’ locational choice is supported by accessibility to services and present/future neighbourhood profile. Built form allocation works as parameter for users’ locational assessment, whereas users’ choices are used as parameters for developers. The model tends to adjust itself, in terms of quantities and types of built forms to be erected, although through a market lag of some iterations. Allocations are always made through weighted draws, so that mutations (non deterministic allocations) do occur.
