title LEARNING DESIGN PROCESS WITH DIGITAL SKETCHING: COPYING GRAPHIC PROCESSES FROM ANIMATIONS AND STORYBOARDS

summary This paper examines the effectiveness of animated versus non-animated drawings as teaching tools. Data was collected by comparing how architectural design students given an animation versus those given a static, six-panel storyboard are able to learn processes in a space-planning design problem. All subjects were given an example of an expert design drawing, asked to put the design steps in order, and then to follow those steps in performing a similar design problem. Their responses were recorded with a digital pen-on-paper system that automatically generates vector animations. The animations can then be immediately viewed on a computer for stroke-by-stroke review. Finally, each student’s animation was analysed in terms of design process steps and compared with the expert example. While those given animations performed only marginally better on the survey of steps, they were better able to imitate the order of expert steps. Furthermore, reviewing the examples by computer revealed common errors that students could modify for more successful design strategies. The following discussion examines methods for researching design process with the digital pen, along with shortcomings, advantages and directions for further study.

summary In this paper, we introduce the concept of information portal (IP) that is a smart environment composed of a variety of computer-augmented architectural components. The objective of information portal is to augment information capabilities to places and support interactive media linked to location. A research prototype of information portal called IP++ is developed. Interactive experiences of IP++ that take place in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings are demonstrated.

summary Idea association is an interactive behavior that will invoke dynamic interactions through different participants’ interplay, especially within the conceptual design stages. Such interplay involves distributed interactions. For understanding the distributed interactions of idea association, the research applies a cognitive theory (role- play) onto modeling the behaviors of designers with internal, external design situation and linking process. By adopting the mechanisms of Dynamic Agent Role Interplay System (DARIS) framework, some computational characteristics within the distributed interactions are explored. Finally, a computer-supported system for dynamically linking design ideas is investigated through a design example.

summary Idea association involves a dynamic linking process among ideas, cases and the links themselves. Based on the knowledge representation issue-concept-form proposed by Oxman (1994), design ideas, cases and links are elucidated. Furthermore, various and dynamic linking plays are involved in two steps: divergent, in which alternative idea entities are linked, and convergent, in which these idea entities are selected. These linking plays provide a computational mechanism for indexing prior design cases dynamically. Finally, an index prototype for supporting the linking process of idea association, called Mapmaker, is proposed in this paper.

summary In spring 2005, four universities and one manufacturer on three continents designed seating units in the virtual design studio “Intercontinental Seating”. With each location describing local characters and sites for the remote designers, we were able to keep focus on comparative cultural contexts in design. A central content management system (Typo3) proved to be an effective platform for project representation and communication, both for students and external critics. Further communication and presentation technologies have been tested. As a result of this workshop, the manufacturer will develop two designs with the students and intends to offer these seating units in his product portfolio.

summary This paper presents a pedagogical approach to explore the relationships between time and space by using digital media. Based on a pedagogical model called e-Space proposed by Lai (2004), we apply motion as a spatial issue to approach this study. Through integrating with the characteristics of digital media, students are encouraged to evolve architectural space and form by decomposing, re-organizing, interpreting and realizing the spatial composition. Simultaneously, diverse digital media applications integrated with design thinking in a design process enables students to bridge two design spaces - physical and virtual. This process introduces the students to a new approach of design-creation and form finding. Finally, we use an advanced digital media course as an example to understand the impacts of the pedagogical approach. The students’ outcomes are also reported in this paper

title Dynamic Idea Maps: A Framework for Linking Ideas with Cases during Brainstorming

summary This research makes use of a cognitive study to explore a mechanism for associating ideas during brainstorming. First, we propose a linking model that integrates three principles of idea association (similarity, contrast and contiguity) with two processes of case-based reasoning (retrieval and adaptation). Then, a design experiment and its protocol analysis are conducted in order to identify the types and mechanisms of linkages between ideas and cases, and to explore a computational mechanism for this linking model. Finally, a framework for case-based reasoning to support idea association called Dynamic Idea-Maps (DIM) is proposed, and its mechanism is elucidated.

summary It has been a ubiquitous problem that users generally do not participate in housing design process. In Taiwan, however, apartment buyers have a chance to customize their plan until the construction takes place. This paper attempts to solve the problem about user participation in apartment plan design by integrating scenario-based design and case-based design approaches. We build an interactive computational tool for designers to support user participation in the apartment plan design process and to prove our concepts by some concrete examples.
