title DESKTOP VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS IN CONSTRUCTION EDUCATION

summary In construction science, classroom oriented education remains the preferred mode of teaching. Alternative methods such as field trips, use of 3D drawings, and physical models often supplement and enhance the understanding of students. In addition to the risks involved with field trips, designated sites may not be at the particular stage of construction during the academic semester, or the construction sequence may not be fast enough to demonstrate the multiple facets during field visits. Considerable pedagogical advantages can be achieved by the integration of IT and visualization tools in teaching construction engineering/technology. The objective of this research was to develop a desktop virtual environment using 3D, animations, virtual reality and walkthrough of construction processes of steel, concrete, and lightwood structures. These visualization techniques can be valuable aids not only in teaching in the classroom but also an effective self-directed tool for open learning via the web.

title Teaching Programming for and with Microcontroller-Enhanced Physical Models

summary As processes of use, interaction and transformation take center stage in various fields of design, electronic sensors, controllers, displays and actuators can significantly enhance the value of physical models. These technologies allow the development of novel computer interfaces for new kinds of interaction with virtual models, and in the future they can be expected to play an important role in the development of new types of active building components and materials for automated construction and dynamic runtime adaptations of inhabitable environments. However, embedding programmed logic into physical objects involves skills outside the traditional domains of expertise of designers and model makers and confronts them with a steep learning curve. The wide variety of alternative technologies and development tools available in this area has a particularly disorienting effect on novices. However, some early experiences suggest that mastery of this learning curve is easily within reach, given some basic introduction, guidance and support. To assist design students in acquiring a basic level of programming knowledge, better educational programming tools are still required. It is the intent of this paper to provide designers and educators with a starting point for explorations into this area as well as to report on the development of an educational approach to electronics programming called haptic programming.

title Improving spatial ability using a Web-based Virtual Environment (WbVE)
source Automation in Construction
summary Spatial ability is one of the cognitive means used in problem solving activities particularly when manipulating and processing visuo-spatial information. With the increasing use of network communication, conventional teaching and learning has shifted towards the development of network environments, online learning, real-time interaction and high quality multi-user collaboration. This paper presents our experiment using a Web-based Virtual Environment (WbVE) that has improved a group of pre-service teachers' spatial ability understanding for teaching Engineering Drawing for secondary school subjects. The experiment is carried out in Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) comprising of 98 pre-service teachers taking the Computer Aided-Design (CAD) course. Selected subjects were pre-tested at the beginning of the semester with spatial tests focusing on mental rotation and spatial visualization to provide the baseline measurement. A desktop WbVE, which was employed and tested in the CAD laboratories to improve their spatial ability for five weeks of instructional treatment, will be demonstrated. Post-testing of spatial tests revealed significantly the overall spatial ability improvements as measured by the test scores. This paper concludes with a discussion on the impact of WbVE spatial learning that will be used as a precedent in the development of the VE teaching and learning prototypes for secondary school in Malaysia.

summary This work deals with the process of exploiting the potentialities of Open Source software to promote distance learning of Digital Graphics. It is considered that this modality of study should offer flexibility in terms of software choices. The GRAFICA LIVRE group emerges with an interdisciplinary character to establish collaborative space of work between students and lecturers from Computer Science Course and Digital Graphics Post-Graduation Course. The hypothesis of this study refers to the possibility of identification and development of procedures to create virtual environments using open source software. The activities defined lead to the implementation of three-dimensional multi-user environment based on open source software in both senses, used to the construction of the environment and to the development of activities to distance learning on Digital Graphics. This paper describes the methodology to structure didactic material to be accessed remotely focusing on identification and enhancement of tools to develop specific activities. summary This paper discusses the performative boundary between the real and the virtual as it constitutes itself based on the potentials, conditions and abilities of Virtual Reality (VR), considered as both a technology and a medium. Starting from the prospects and the areas of application of 'new' technologies within the context of architecture, the paper seeks the point of intersection between an architectural perspective, a posthuman view and a technological potential. The focus thereby lies in the greatest challenge of VR, that is, the integration of the users as they interface the virtual and the real. The conditions and implications of such dynamic processes, perceived as space generating, rather than representing, are explored based on the authors' virtual environment: Uzume.

summary This conference paper examines experimental design exercises on a simulated model in relation to designing on a physical model. In the initial design phases, the process of designing on both a haptic and digital model is analysed with regard to the didactic objectives. In this context, only form-related aesthetic aspects are discussed. The starting point is the didactic necessity of imparting to students the process of designing on spatial models. Reduced to form determination, the question examined is for which aspects of design theory the potentials of real and virtual models, as well as of the interaction of both types, can be exploited.

title Housing Layout Design Using Fractals

summary This paper introduces a computer-based tool for three dimensional (3D) landscape simulations of housing-layout-design using the concepts of fractals with Iterative Function System (IFS). Housing layout design is defined as a design to allocate many house-units in the undeveloped site. The tool generates a variety of layout designs consisting of multiple dwelling house-units from manual inputs or a template pattern defined as an XML file. Each unit can contain any detailed 3D components found in the residential development such as a house, roads, walls, trees etc. The template defines the transformation rules for IFS including the information of geometrical relationships between the stages in the iteration and of the components used in stop-conditions. The application tool is formulated, implemented and tested. The results in the case studies using several practical sites are demonstrated and evaluated based on the experiments in the design studio.

title Real-time Simulations Using Learning Algorithms for Immersive Data Visualization in Buildings

summary Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations are used to predict indoor thermal environments and assess their response to specific internal/external conditions. Although computing power has increased exponentially in the past decade, CFD simulations are still time-consuming and their prediction results cannot be used for real-time immersive visualization in buildings. A method that can bypass the timeconsuming simulations and generate "acceptable" results will allow such visualization to be constructed.This paper discusses a project that utilizes a supervised Artificial Neural Network (ANN) as a learning algorithm to predict post-processed CFD data to ensure rapid data visualization. To develop a generic learning model for a wide range of spatial configurations, this paper presents a pilot project that utilizes an unsupervised Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithm. The ANN technique was integrated with an interactive, immersive Augmented Reality (AR) system to interact with and visualize CFD results in buildings. ANN was also evaluated against a linear regression model. Both models were tested and validated with datasets to determine their degree of accuracy. Initial tests, conducted to evaluate the user's experience of the system, indicated satisfactory results.

title Didactic Design: light and optics for preschool level

summary Since 2003, we have been developing a pedagogic proposal and didactic material for teaching Light and Optics to kindergarden children that enhances the construction of the first scientific thinking schemes. The design (industrial and graphic) applied to this project has generated an educational product composed of 44 objects. These materials allow teaching concepts such as: combination of colors, light indispensable to see, formation of shadows and images are not objects. These have been developed as inciters of curiosity, capable to awake the innate restlessness of children, achieving to stimulate their creativity. The purpose is to explore knowledge and construct their own ideas; enrich their experiences and inquire a reality that was drawn grey and tedious, generating a process of manipulation-action and then representation-conceptualization. This product has been successfully used as a pilot test in a kindergarden, reflecting significant gains in students’ science learning. [Full paper in Spanish]

summary This work describes results obtained from a test over an experimental prototype “Otra Andria” (OA1) designed by the investigation team of “Obra Abierta: Over the construction of an investigating and learning system in virtual environments”. OA1 is a basic tool. It show us: three simultaneous screens with editing tool bars, an integrated chat for publication and discussion, images and texts, all this in synchronized time. Tools are simultaneously accessible from all boards by the teacher, the students or between pupils. There is a web log, a personal web, and an activities’ organization space for the professors. This experience was helpful to understand the actual needs for virtual environment applications as well as e-learning problems in such cases where the know-how is not available to every attendant to the course. That means we must begin working on hyper-medial language diffusion among all teachers who want to use the ICT in all its actual potentiality. [Full paper in Spanish]

title A DISTRIBUTED MODEL FOR TACIT DESIGN KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE

summary The distributed cognition approach, and by extension the domain of social intelligence design, attempts to integrate three until recently separate realms: mind, society, and matter. The field offers a heterogeneous collection of ideas, observations, and case studies, yet lacks a coherent theoretical framework for building models of concrete systems and processes. Despite the intrinsic complexity of integrating individual, social and technologically-supported intelligence, the paper proposes a relatively simple ‘connectionist’ framework for conceptualizing a distributed cognitive system. This framework represents shared information sources (documents) as nodes connected by links of variable strength, which increases interactively with the number of co-occurrences of documents in the patterns of their usage. This connectionist learning procedure captures and uses the implicit knowledge of its community of users to help them find relevant information, thus supporting an unconscious form of exchange. The principles are illustrated by an envisaged application to a concrete problem domain: the dynamic sharing of design knowledge among a multitude of architects through a database of associatively connected building projects.

summary University faculty -adult culture- work from the logic that goes through their speech, didactic model and strategies, providing special links with: the aim of knowledge, transmission mechanisms and technological medium. Students -young culture- receive and deal with knowledge mechanisms from a new logic. In a multimedia framework they establish interpretations using technological medium from semantic decodification. Young graduates, assistants, studio leaders -intermediate culture- coming from traditional learning models with acquired abilities in digital media, are a “potential interface” between both cultures. The impact between fields and cultures implies limitations and risks that may encourage change. A discourse about “new didactic configurations” from the point of view of these three cultures makes possible the exploration of other ways of teaching. Therefore the articulation of teacher-student interrelations and media promotes the development of teaching-learning techniques. [Full paper in Spanish]

summary This paper reports on a study of the role of place in a virtual learning environment for digital media design. Using an immersive 3D Virtual World based on Active Worlds, we have created a virtual learning place for students in a Website Design course. The virtual learning place has two distinct parts: a classroom-like place surrounded by student galleries. Students can navigate and communicate (synchronous chat) within the environment in the form of an avatar (virtual person). We recorded the conversations and activities of the students in discussions held in the virtual learning place and applied a communication coding scheme to analyze their discussions. In this paper we present our approach to developing an understanding of the role of place and evidence of its effect on the conversations of design students in a virtual learning environment. We show how we identified the characteristics of place and specifically how it provides a context for identity and presence for supporting collaborative and constructivist student centred learning.

summary Over 10 months ending in July 2005, architecture students from Aachen, Karlsruhe and Weimar took part in a design studio that differed significantly from other studios in that the result of the studio was a 1:1 realisation of the design. This is part of an evolution of the virtual faculty of architecture “Liquid Campus”, founded in 2001, which has seen the complexity of the projects steadily rise and this continued in the Project “Ein Fest: Ein Dach”. The integrated studio is arranged to encourage an active, economic and transparent learning process, which encompasses design, communication and cooperation issues. The stated goal at the beginning of the two-semester process is to build and although only a few of the ideas are realised, all participants are involved in the realisation. In this case, the project was to create “roofs” for an open-air concert for 200,000 people in Karlsruhe, Germany. The planning was carried out using the Netzentwurf platform, with which the authors have several years experience.

summary This paper presents a pedagogical approach to explore the relationships between time and space by using digital media. Based on a pedagogical model called e-Space proposed by Lai (2004), we apply motion as a spatial issue to approach this study. Through integrating with the characteristics of digital media, students are encouraged to evolve architectural space and form by decomposing, re-organizing, interpreting and realizing the spatial composition. Simultaneously, diverse digital media applications integrated with design thinking in a design process enables students to bridge two design spaces - physical and virtual. This process introduces the students to a new approach of design-creation and form finding. Finally, we use an advanced digital media course as an example to understand the impacts of the pedagogical approach. The students’ outcomes are also reported in this paper

title Collective Pavilions: A Generative Architectural Modelling for Traditional Chinese Pagoda

summary This paper investigates generative architectural modelling for traditional Chinese architecture and aims to explore and extend the potential of adaptive computing for architectural design methods. The design manners analysis of traditional pagodas architectures is made in a holistic view and under historical perspective. We propose a descriptive model and generative system for the design of traditional Chinese pagodas, by which each pagoda is defined as a collection of style-matched and form-coordinated pavilions and described by both topological graphs and variant geometrical units. Our approach models both of the building geometry and space organization/spatial patterns of pagodas separately. The generative mechanism consists of a framework of grammar-based design and parametric, recursive shape computation. Accordingly, the generative algorithm is also made of two levels, the topology of spatial patterns and the shape geometrical parameters that characterize pavilion variations. The algorithm for computing the former is based on GP (Genetic Programming) and the latter GA (Genetic Algorithms). To explore the collective behaviour of a group of pavilions, multi-agent modelling approach is incorporated in composition patterns search. A prototype system, 'glPagoda', using the OpenGL graphics library for rendering and visualization, has been developed and implemented on PC windows platform.

summary A diversified, open-ended, and critical approach of architectural design that interplays with a variety of media, suggests an innovative development to gain new spatial solutions. Architects and designers are aware of these possibilities by integrating physical and digital media during their design process, yet the creative potentials of these media are rarely used to their full potentials. The architectural design process can be enriched by using uncommon perceptions, comprehensions, and conceptions of spatial design translations within both physical and virtual environments. A wilful interplay with the design media and the process offers the possibility to dismantle the limits of each domain and explore the design itself in unorthodox ways. The overall engagement within both real and virtual environments leads to innovative form creations and powerful design solutions. Following the tradition of artists, who explore media in unusual ways, new architectural interpretations emerge, reflecting on the media as well as the architectural design.

summary As the Web grows in the Education area, the new Information and Communication Technologies have been introduced to improve quality in remote education, and more interaction among students through a collaborative environment that helps the learning process. In architecture, many experiences have occurred among schools, giving their students the opportunity to experience this new reality. Like a virtual “field trip”, students with different cultures and oriented under different methodologies, have the opportunity to be part of an inter-institutional group to design together. The social-history theories of Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934), Russian psychologist that dedicated his life to education, seams to fit the new forms of virtual interaction among students. summary With the persistent stimulation of the immediate virtual environment our vision of reality, very often, is enriched by forms lucubrated in imaginary worlds, but we run into the difficulty of bringing them to the real world. If we channel this internal vision combining 3D origami techniques and digital visualization we could transform this difficulty into an opportunity of expression, materialization. With the main objective of structuring a new learning environment to approach an architectonic theme in virtual environments and with the correspondent theoretical support, sequences of immersive experiences are trialed delimiting techniques and methods. 3D origami techniques are applied to build-represent a new form and architectonic space and trough real time rendering engines, presentation, surfing the created model and its debate in net. The results obtained show a possible way to expand to the limit our threshold of vision and visualization that allows to emerge a new perception and to represent architectonic spaces. summary Design technology simulates a variety of senses but on the other hand restricts them to audio and visual responses. What happens if technology can accommodate more senses in the creation process and how does it affect the way we approach design? This paper investigates the implication of tangible interfaces in design computing. The focal point is to assess the factors of perception and cooperative working by employing an Augmented Reality (AR) setup with tangible interfaces in a design studio.
