title Thoughts on a Designer-friendly Shape Grammar Interpreter
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2005.523
source Digital Design: The Quest for New Paradigms [23nd eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-3-2] Lisbon (Portugal) 21-24 September 2005, pp. 523-528
summary Discussions of shape grammar interpreters overlook a fundamental issue: the model of the designer’s work. Such a model would provide guidance for developing an interpreter with an appropriate interface. In this paper, I first propose a model in which the designer’s work is to create and test generative specifications of languages of designs. I call this model designercentered generative design. Then, I examine the characteristics of shape grammar and how they support or impede this model of work. Finally, I discuss the implications for the design of an appropriate shape grammar interpreter. These provide guidelines for implementing such an interpreter for testing.

title CaseBox: a Tool for Case-based Learning
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2005.077
source Digital Design: The Quest for New Paradigms [23nd eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-3-2] Lisbon (Portugal) 21-24 September 2005, pp. 77-82
summary This study reports on the development and experiment of CaseBox for case-based learning. Due to many advantages of the case-based reasoning, the authors create a learning environment for both teachers and students. In the digital era, multimedia and web-based education methodologies emerge auspiciously in schools. Teachers and students no longer satisfy paper-based documents, they research with case-based reasoning on the internet. CaseBox is proposed as a learning environment, which supports: 1) Teachers introduce cases. 2) Students study and reuse cases. 3) Members discuss design on the web. CaseBox is still under development and this study reports on the efforts and discoveries at the recent stage, and shares the debates of ideas and problems of case-based e-Learning.

title What Makes an Effective Case in Case-based Learning? : Our Debates at a Constructivist Teaching Studio
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2005.071
source CAADRIA 2005 [Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 89-7141-648-3] New Delhi (India) 28-30 April 2005, vol. 2, pp. 71-78
summary Case-based learning was adopted in a constructivist teaching studio. In this experimental class, teachers and students used cases for mutual learning in many ways. A significant question was debated in this class: “What makes an effective case in case-based learning?” This investigation studies students’ active construction of the meaning. The answer at the didactic teaching class will be quite different from ours. However, this investigation seeks to share our discussion and experience about this topic.

title Digital Method for Landscape Evaluation: Taking The Lesser Three Gorges for example
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2005.363
source CAADRIA 2005 [Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 89-7141-648-3] New Delhi (India) 28-30 April 2005, vol. 1, pp. 363-375
summary Landscape in narrow sense means a set of multiple features about topography, landforms, scenery and etc., and it is in accord to general people, especially their visual experience and psychological cognition, and acceptable too by architects and planners. The paper presents a digital method aimed the type of river valley landscape and several key quantitative indexes. The writers have taken the Lesser Three Gorges for an example to evaluate its value in landscape, and shown this method available and useful.

title Architectural Presentation with Laser Pointers on a Projection Screen
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2005.449
source Digital Design: The Quest for New Paradigms [23nd eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-3-2] Lisbon (Portugal) 21-24 September 2005, pp. 449-456
summary In a conventional group meeting environment with digital content presented on screen, the discussion may be dominated by a presenter who has the control of the computer. Being widely used in meetings, laser pointer is a potential tool that can tackle this problem. This paper describes a novel use of laser pointers in architectural presentations. A laser pointing system designed for a projector- and-screen environment was developed. The performance and usability of the system were tested. A controlled user experiment was carried out to compare the laser pointer with other interacting devices, including a mouse, a stylus, a trackpoint and a TabletPC. The usability was tested by using the system in a real application. Details of the laser pointing system, the experiments and the results are reported in this paper.

title A Computer-Supported Participative Design Jury
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2005.154
source CAADRIA 2005 [Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 89-7141-648-3] New Delhi (India) 28-30 April 2005, vol. 1, pp. 154-164
summary As the design jury changed from closed to open format, it inevitably becomes a learning environment in architectural education. But its educational goal has not been best achieved. A significant problem reported in the literature is that students are not able to participate effectively along the review process. In this research, we conducted a survey to study the local design juries and intend to interpret the survey result by examining the group process losses in conventional design juries. We also discussed the possibility to improve the effectiveness of design juries in terms of increasing students’ active participation and learning experience by integrating groupware to support a structured review process.

title Enhancing Interaction in Architectural Presentations with Laser Pointers
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 3 - no. 4, 503-517
summary In a common meeting environment with projector-and-screen settings, the discussion may be dominated by a presenter who has the control of the content displayed. Although frequently used for architectural discussions, this digitally-engaged setting may not be optimal in its support of participation and discussion of design ideas. This paper presents a novel use of laser pointers to enhance the interaction in architectural presentations. A laser pointing system designed for a projector-and-screen environment was developed. To compare the performance of the laser pointer with other interaction devices, a controlled user study was carried out to test the efficiency of different devices in point-and-selection interactions. The usability of the system was also tested in a design critique. These two tests show that laser pointer is useful and able to encourage participation in group discussions. Details of the laser pointing system, the experiments and the results are reported in this paper.
