title Thonet Chairs Design Grammar: a Step Towards the Mass Customization of Furniture

summary The paper presents the first phase of research currently under development that is focused on encoding Thonet design style into a generative design system using a shape grammar. The ultimate goal of the work is the design and production of customizable chairs using computer assisted tools, establishing a feasible practical model of the paradigm of mass customization (Davis, 1987). The current research step encompasses the following three steps: (1) codification of the rules describing Thonet design style into a shape grammar; (2) implementing the grammar into a computer tool as parametric design; and (3) rapid prototyping of customized chair designs within the style. Future phases will address the transformation of the Thonet’s grammar to create a new style and the production of real chair designs in this style using computer aided manufacturing. Beginning in the 1830’s, Austrian furniture designer Michael Thonet began experimenting with forming steam beech, in order to produce lighter furniture using fewer components, when compared with the standards of the time. Using the same construction principles and standardized elements, Thonet produced different chairs designs with a strong formal resemblance, creating his own design language. The kit assembly principle, the reduced number of elements, industrial efficiency, and the modular approach to furniture design as a system of interchangeable elements that may be used to assemble different objects enable him to become a pioneer of mass production (Noblet, 1993). The most paradigmatic example of the described vision of furniture design is the chair No. 14 produced in 1858, composed of six structural elements. Due to its simplicity, lightness, ability to be stored in flat and cubic packaging for individual of collective transportation, respectively, No. 14 became one of the most sold chairs worldwide, and it is still in production nowadays. Iconic examples of mass production are formally studied to provide insights to mass customization studies. The study of the shape grammar for the generation of Thonet chairs aimed to ensure rules that would make possible the reproduction of the selected corpus, as well as allow for the generation of new chairs within the developed grammar. Due to the wide variety of Thonet chairs, six chairs were randomly chosen to infer the grammar and then this was fine tuned by checking whether it could account for the generation of other designs not in the original corpus. Shape grammars (Stiny and Gips, 1972) have been used with sucesss both in the analysis as in the synthesis of designs at different scales, from product design to building and urban design. In particular, the use of shape grammars has been efficient in the characterization of objects’ styles and in the generation of new designs within the analyzed style, and it makes design rules amenable to computers implementation (Duarte, 2005). The literature includes one other example of a grammar for chair design by Knight (1980). In the second step of the current research phase, the outlined shape grammar was implemented into a computer program, to assist the designer in conceiving and producing customized chairs using a digital design process. This implementation was developed in Catia by converting the grammar into an equivalent parametric design model. In the third phase, physical models of existing and new chair designs were produced using rapid prototyping. The paper describes the grammar, its computer implementation as a parametric model, and the rapid prototyping of physical models. The generative potential of the proposed digital process is discussed in the context of enabling the mass customization of furniture. The role of the furniture designer in the new paradigm and ideas for further work also are discussed.

summary Each year, the United States discards 375 million tons of concrete construction debris to landfills (U.S. EPA 2016), but this is a new paradigm. Past civilizations cannibalized their constructions to produce new architectures (Hopkins 2005). This paper interrogates one cannibalistic methodology from the past known as cyclopean masonry in order to translate this valuable method into a contemporary digital procedure. The work contextualizes the techniques of this method and situates them into procedural recipes which can be applied in contemporary construction. A full-scale prototype is produced utilizing the described method; demolition debris is gathered, scanned, and processed through an algorithmic workflow. Each rubble unit is then minimally carved by a robotic arm and set to compose a new architecture from discarded rubble debris. The prototype merges ancient construction thinking with digital design and fabrication methodologies. It poses material cannibalism as a means of combating excessive construction waste generation.

Ultimately, the new generation of architects should be able to select, adapt and create digital tools that allow them to process, manipulate and give form to wide-ranging and complex data sets. summary “Why do we have to change? We’ve been building buildings for years without CATIA?” Roger Norfleet, a practicing architect in his thirties poses this question to Tim Quix, a generation older and an expert in CATIA, a computer-aided design tool developed by Dassault Systemes in the early 1980’s for use by aerospace engineers. It is 2005 and CATIA has just come into use at Paul Morris Associates, the thirty-person architecture firm where Norfleet works; he is struggling with what it will mean for him, for his firm, for his profession. Computer-aided design is about creativity, but also about jurisdiction, about who controls the design process. In Architecture: The Story of Practice, Architectural theorist Dana Cuff writes that each generation of architects is educated to understand what constitutes a creative act and who in the system of their profession is empowered to use it and at what time. Creativity is socially constructed and Norfleet is coming of age as an architect in a time of technological but also social transition. He must come to terms with the increasingly complex computeraided design tools that have changed both creativity and the rules by which it can operate. In today’s practices, architects use computer-aided design software to produce threedimensional geometric models. Sometimes they use off-the-shelf commercial software like CATIA, sometimes they customize this software through plug-ins and macros, sometimes they work with software that they have themselves programmed. And yet, conforming to Larson’s ideas that they claim the higher ground by identifying with art and not with science, contemporary architects do not often use the term “simulation.” Rather, they have held onto traditional terms such as “modeling” to describe the buzz of new activity with digital technology. But whether or not they use the term, simulation is creating new architectural identities and transforming relationships among a range of design collaborators: masters and apprentices, students and teachers, technical experts and virtuoso programmers. These days, constructing an identity as an architect requires that one define oneself in relation to simulation. Case studies, primarily from two architectural firms, illustrate the transformation of traditional relationships, in particular that of master and apprentice, and the emergence of new roles, including a new professional identity, “keeper of the geometry,” defined by the fusion of person and machine. Like any profession, architecture may be seen as a system in flux. However, with their new roles and relationships, architects are learning that the fight for professional jurisdiction is increasingly for jurisdiction over simulation. Computer-aided design is changing professional patterns of production in architecture, the very way in which professionals compete with each other by making new claims to knowledge. Even today, employees at Paul Morris squabble about the role that simulation software should play in the office. Among other things, they fight about the role it should play in promotion and firm hierarchy. They bicker about the selection of new simulation software, knowing that choosing software implies greater power for those who are expert in it. Architects and their collaborators are in a continual struggle to define the creative roles that can bring them professional acceptance and greater control over design. New technologies for computer-aided design do not change this reality, they become players in it.

summary This paper is a study of an ongoing housing project in Brussels (SMH) which involves bottom-up spatial occupation and 'making' by activists, activist architects, social workers and citizens. The particular focus of this paper is on the critical spatial agency of the citizens, activist-architects and artefacts for enabling architectural design justice (ADJ) in the SMH. Building on the Actor-Network Theory of Latour (2005) we developed an analytic method called Actor Link Mapping and Analysis (ALMA) which involves data collection from a wide range of network actors, the generation of a variety of digital network maps, making computational analysis, followed by workshops and interviews to discuss the findings. ALMA was used to recognize potential assets which are essential for design justice practices and networks. The analysis revealed the limits to community control of design processes and practices as well as limits to the conceptual links surrounding socio-spatial equality, thus limits to design justice in the SMH project. Our research also revealed a plethora of new roles and agencies in bottom-up housing production which were essential to understanding the dynamics and power distribution among the different actors.

Following the tradition of artists, who explore media in unusual ways, new architectural interpretations emerge, reflecting on the media as well as the architectural design.

summary In architecture, design ideas are developed as much through interaction as by individuals in isolation. This awareness inspired the development of a Dynamic Architectural Memory On-line, an interactive platform to share ideas, knowledge and insights in the form of concrete building projects among designers in different contexts and at different levels of expertise. Interaction with various user groups revealed this platform to suffer from at least two thresholds. First of all, making projects available to other platform users takes time, effort, and specific skills. Secondly, designers tend to sense a psychological threshold to share their ideas and insights with others. In trying to tackle both thresholds, this paper proposes to conceive the platform as an associative network of projects, and develops ideas about how the relationships in this network can be determined and updated by exploiting the insights implicitly available in the project documentation and user (inter)actions. In the long run, this should allow the platform to learn from all designers using the platform, including those who do not release information on their own projects, and to apply the lessons learned to continuously enhance its performance.

summary In South Korea, the changing paradigm of family composition toward single-person households and nuclear families has caused the decrease in number of students, which has led to the need for change in the qualitative, rather than quantitative, management of spaces and facilities on university campuses. In particular, since 2005, the merging of universities have accelerated, which has brought up the need for a system that facilitates the management of integrated university systems. Accordingly, universities now require efficient system operation based on three-dimensional and data visualization, unlike the document-based management of facilities and spaces in the past. Users lack a sense of responsibility for public facilities, causing difficulties such as energy waste and frequent movement, as well as damage and theft of goods. This study aims to form an AR-based interface using the ANPR algorithm, a computer vision technique, and the position-based data of the GPS. It also aims to build a campus space management system to overcome the limitations of current systems and to effectively and systematically manage integrated building data. In addition, for module test verification, the prototype is applied to actual campus spaces, and additional demands for campus space management in the AR application are identified and organized.

summary One of the fundamental characteristics of architectural drawing is its use of scale. Since the Renaissance - during which architectural production shifted from the construction site to paper - this scalar understanding began by using bodily measurements. In developing designs, the architect projects future occupation of the drawing with their eyes and hands moving over both its physical surface and represented space. The different relationship established between the digital drawer and the body has been criticised; Paul Emmons argues that CAD's full scale - or rather scale-less - capabilities omit this bodily presence of the drawer (Emmons, 2005). Due to the use of full scale data recording, the drawer zooms in and out to consider aspects, severing the drawing's relation to the operator's body. This paper explores ways in which the body and drawings intersect, beyond Emmons definition, and hence considers the influence of the method of drawing on perceptions of scale and the inhabitation of digital drawings. It uses ongoing collaborative research projects and exhibitions to explore the inhabitation of digital drawing at full scale. These works highlight the fundamental importance of the line within architecture, not as demarcation, divider or indexical reference, but as a traces of bodily projections.

summary An open-ended, diversified and critical approach of architectural design, using different form of ideas representation might offer best chances to gain new spatial solutions. Today’s most forward architects and designer are aware of this and make full use of physical and digital media during the process of design. During the summer term 2004 the experiment ‘Crossing the Media’ took place at the Technical University of Braunschweig. The main goal of this practical oriented seminar has been the exploration of the interface between analogue and digital Media within the design process. Both techniques, analogue and digital, were used in an experimental way and their interaction and adaptability in the field of architecture was analyzed. The work examines the possibility of a consistent integration of digital and physical representation in a design process and the individual benefits of each. In order to achieve this, we made up a stringent line of digital-analogue and analogue-digital (DA-AD) Technologies for our design experiment. During the examination we focused especially on the creative potential of the techniques used, their interaction and adaptability in the field of architecture. Hence one of the goals of the occupation with the digital analogue interfaces was the examination of the emerging shift within the structure during the process, the imprints of technology. This paper describes the workflow and tools that were used, our practical experiences with analogue digital interface and the emerging questions and impulses to architects future work and theory. The discovered limitations and consequences of interfaces between the analogue and digital realm of design and their creative chances will be revealed. We share results which we think are helpful to others, and we highlight areas where further research is necessary.

summary What will be waiting for the man of a virtual, parallel world, conceived by another man? Inasmuch as a virtual atmosphere does not possess weather, there is no day or nights, simply there is no sky, and if there is neither sky nor ground it does not have an above or below and of course there is no gravity. In such case why would we need walls and windows? Would we need streets to circulate? Why would we walk or fly? Today, digital media bring the necessary tools to shape, to represent and to live impossible experiences within a world where all imaginable phenomena is possible. Our experience aims to explore an approach of the student towards the new processes of design in order to contrive new spaces, taking care of not falling in an exclusively aesthetic objective but reflecting on the characteristics and qualities that a virtual space and its matter must have. summary Information and communication technologies bring together methods of organizing complex activities while questioning traditional ways of working, inviting to use complex approaches when it comes to design process, based on the fact that the media has the potential to alter the perceptions of whole factors involved. It enables the creation of networks, the rethinking of working methods, allowing an even more effective interaction between different actors and their activities. The starting point for the experimental exercise “Abrigo Mínimo” was to discuss a different approach of understanding the way architectural student design by including questions of context. It is proposed that, to understand the design process complexity, they should have a vision of site, subjects and design interrelations as processes rather than products and a conception of it as fields of relations rather than as arrangements of objects. summary This research initiative addresses the issue of Design in relation to Virtual Context.

Central to this study are the innovative potentials and instrumental opportunities of computer based media techniques, capable of generating interactive models and changing perspectives for the benefit of urban and architectural design.

The ambition was to not only make a contribution to the existing body of knowledge concerning digital technologies and their applications, but explore theoretical conditions which might help define and stimulate further study.

From the outset, the focus was on furthering the opportunities for computer based representation media in creative design. On the basis of a series of explorative studies the subject of this research was targeted: the issue of Design in Context, or more specifically: Design(ing) in a Virtual Context.

During the process there was a marked shift in the conception of the subject from – more or less immersive – VR technologies in the direction of approaches which might be expected to become readily available in practice and education and could be effective in actual design processes. This insight also brought about a shift in emphasis from realism per-se towards creating a sense of situatedness.

The design representation system which was developed was intended to not just allow for one type of model view, but to afford an array of different views, from which the designer would be able to choose freely, depending on the phase and focus of design as well as personal preferences. A series of interface prototypes and support tools were developed especially and successively tested experimentally. 

For the intended final design driven experimental study, different virtual context models were considered. Eventually, an integral –  purely fictitious – design ‘environment’ was constructed in the computer, so that the workings of the proposed system and its components would be tested systematically.

A conscious choice was made for an in depth study, on a relatively modest scale, which would a certain amount of mutual involvement between designer and researcher, to confront the participants with the finer aspects of the proposed system in a relatively short time and to gather detailed data. A half dozen design professionals were invited to participate in a closely monitored experimental exercise.

The results of this study therefore do not offer straightforward, indisputable facts, to be considered representative for the design community as a whole, but indicate that the working methods of the individual designers – when discovering aspects of the site, developing and presenting proposals and reflecting on the qualities of represented designs – tend to vary considerably. For this reason the interactive representation system proved to be of value. Participants could express different view preferences, with more or less realistic image modes being used in different phases of their design developments, with varying experiences of situatedness. Some of the design professionals participants were very appreciative of the system’s opportunities, others tended to be more ‘set in their ways’.

The results of this experimental study indicate that there may particularly be opportunities for interface applications which are able to function interactively, offering individual designers –  as well as others involved in evaluating design proposals – a variety of tools with which to approach specific design artefacts in their changing contexts. Virtual models can play not only an important role as a ‘reminder’ for the designer but also to other parties playing an active role in the design and implementation processes. Interactive environment models are not only promising as exploration tools for existing sites, but could be valuable to test the impact of a design on its location. This could be especially interesting if the site is difficult or impossible to visit or as yet a virtual construction. In addition such an approach might be beneficial for objective comparison and evaluation of design proposals in competitions and in education as well as in on-line collaborative design projects where the context is still in the process of being developed.

summary Research on contemporary habitation spaces is directly related to the study of the relationship between new media and everyday life. This paper presents ongoing in-depth research which intends to discuss these relationships in different ways on a conceptual basis. A collaborative multi-users interface is being specially designed, supported by different kinds of electronic equipment. Furthermore, the project’s objective is to analyze how these information and communication technologies are to be used, as well as their impact on poor communities. As a hypothesis, our intention is to verify if the access to information will be able to broaden social interactions and improve new services which have been set up, in order to guarantee a better quality of life. Beyond being a conceptual approach, the study intends to present and examine facts obtained from intervening in a poor district in São Paulo city, Brazil. Using an existing public telecenter as an access provider to the internet, individual TV-connected set-top boxes in 220 apartments in a local social housing complex are being installed, enabling users to communicate through a collaborative multiusers digital interface. Adding a virtual instance to a geographically-based community, the aim of the project is to provide new possibilities to improve dialogue and debates, to encourage more income and cultural activities. It also intends to evaluate the effects of the technological mediation of social relationships, both inside and outside the community, as well as within the physical urban space such as in the dwellings. The results of this study will be useful in defining public policies to be implemented by the Sao Paulo Local Government. The work is being sponsored by FAPESP, which is the Sao Paulo State Funding Agencie, but also by public institutions, private partners and universities. Researchers involved belong to complementary fields such as architecture, urbanism, computer sciences, social sciences, psychology and electronic engineering.

summary Log Knot, developed by the Robotic Construction Laboratory (RCL) at Cornell University, is a robotically fabricated architectural installation that establishes a method for variable compound timber curvature creation utilizing both regular and irregular roundwood geometries. Moreover, the project develops methods for minimal formwork assembly and moment force optimization of customized mortise and tenon joints. Following the logic of a figure-8 knot, the project consists of an infinite loop of roundwood, curving three-dimensionally along its length. There are a variety of techniques to generate single curvature in wood structures – such as steam bending (Wright et al., 2013) or glue lamination (Issa and Kmeid, 2005) – but only a few techniques to generate complex curvature from raw material within a single wooden structural element exist. To construct complex curvature, the research team developed a simple method that can easily be replicated. First, the log is compartmentalized, establishing a series of discrete parts. Second, the parts are reconfigured into a complex curvature “whole” by carefully manipulating the assembly angles and joints between the logs. Timber components reconfigured in such a manner can either follow planar curvature profiles or spatial compound curvature profiles. Based on knowledge gained from the initial joinery tests, the research team developed a custom tri-fold mortise and tenon joint, which is self-supportive during assembly and able to resist bending in multiple directions. Using the tri-fold mortise and tenon joint, a number of full-scale prototypes were created to test the structural capacity of the overall assembly. Various structural optimization protocols are deployed in the Log Knot project. While the global knot form is derived from spatial considerations – albeit within the structurally sound framework of a closed-loop knot structure – the project is structurally optimized at a local level, closely calibrating structural cross-sections, joinery details, and joint rotation in relation to prevailing load conditions.

summary This paper is based on a comparative analysis of some twenty-six intelligent building facades and sixteen large media-facades from a socio-psychological perspective. It is not difficult to observe how deployment of computational technologies have engendered new possibilities for architectural production to which surface-centeredness lies at that heart of spatial production during design, fabrication and envelope automation processes. While surfaces play a critical role in contemporary social production (information display, communication and interaction), it is important to understand how the relationships between augmented building surfaces and its subjects unfold. We target double-skin automated facades as a distinct field within building-services and automation industry, and discuss how the developments within this area are over-occupied with seamless climate control and energy efficiency themes, resulting into socially inert mechanical membranes. Our thesis is that at the core of the development of automated façade lies the industrial automation attitude that renders the eventual product socially less engaging and machinic. We illustrate examples of interactive media-façades to demonstrate how architects and interaction designers have used similar technology to turn building surfaces into socially engaging architectural elements. We seek opportunities to extend performative aspects of otherwise function driven double-skin façades for public expression, informal social engagement and context embodiment. Towards the end of the paper, we propose a conceptual model as a possible method to address the emergent issues. Through this paper we intend to bring forth emergent concerns to designing building membrane where technology and performance are addressed through a broader cultural position, establishing a continual dialogue between the surface, function and its larger human context.

summary The next major revolution for design is to bring the natural user interaction into design activities. Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) brought a new approach that was more effective compared to their conventional predecessors. In recent years, Natural User Interfaces (NUI) have advanced user experiences and multi-touch and gesture technologies provide new opportunities for a variety of potential uses in design. Much attention has been paid to leverage in the design of interactive interfaces. The mouse input and desktop screen metaphors limit the information sharing for multiple users and also delayed the direct interaction for communication between each other. This paper proposes the innovative method by integrating game engine ‘Unity3D’ with multi-touch tangible interfaces. Unity3D provides a game development tool as part of its application package that has been designed to let users to focus on creating new games. However, it does not limit the usage of area to design additional game scenarios since the benefits of Unity3D is allowing users to build 3D environments with its customizable and easy to use editor, graphical pipelines to openGL (http://unity3d.com/, 2010 ). It creates Virtual Reality (VR) environments which can simulates places in the real world, as well as the virtual environments helping architects and designers to vividly represent their design concepts through 3D visualizations, and interactive media installations in a detailed multi-sensory experience. Stereoscopic displays advanced their spatial ability while solving issues to design e.g. urban spaces. The paper presents how a multi-touch tabletop can be used for these design collaboration and communication tasks. By using natural gestures, designers can now communicate and share their ideas by manipulating the same reference simultaneously using their own input simultaneously. Further studies showed that 3Dl forms are perceived and understood more readily through haptic and proprioceptive perception of tangible representations than through visual representation alone (Gillet et al, 2005). Based on the authors’ framework presented at the last CAADFutures, the benefits of integrating 3D visualization and tactile sensory can be illustrated in this platform (Chen and Wang, 2009), For instance, more than one designer can manipulate the 3D geometry objects on tabletop directly and can communicate successfully their ideas freely without having to waiting for the next person response. It made the work more effective which increases the overall efficiency. Designers can also collect the real-time data by any change they make instantly. The possibilities of Uniy3D make designing very flexible and fun, it is deeply engaging and expressive. Furthermore, the unity3D is revolutionizing the game development industry, its breakthrough development platform for creating highly interactive 3D content on the web (http://unity3d.com/ , 2010) or similar to the interface of modern multimedia devices such as the iPhone, therefore it allows the designers to work remotely in a collaborative way to integrate the design process by using the individual mobile devices while interacting design in a common platform. In design activities, people create an external representation of a domain, often of their own ideas and understanding. This platform helps learners to make their ideas concrete and explicit, and once externalized, subsequently they reflect upon their work how well it sits the real situation. The paper demonstrates how this tabletop innovatively replaces the typical desktop metaphor. In summary, the paper addresses two major issues through samples of collaborative design: firstly presenting aspects of learners’ interactions with physical objects, whereby tangible interfaces enables them constructing expressive representations passively (Marshall, 2007), while focussing on other tasks; and secondly showing how this novel design tool allows designers to actively create constructions that might not be possible with conventional media.
