summary Design has been described as making inspire decisions with incomplete information. True, we may use prior knowledge, we may even think we understand the causalites involved, but what really matters is exploration: of new forms, of new materials, and speculation about the response to the resulting effects. Essentially, this exploration has its own dynamics, involving intuition and spontaneity, and without which there is no design. But of course we all know that this is not the whole story. Design is different to 'craft'; to directly 'making' or 'doing'. It necessarily has to be predictive in order to anticipate what the consequence of the 'making' or 'doing' will be. Therefore we inevitably have to counter balance our intuition with a well developed sense of premeditation. We have to be able to reason about future events, about the consequence of something that has not yet being made. There is always going to be an advantage if this reasoning can be achieved with a degree of precision. So how can we progress from intuition to precision? What abstractions can we use to represent, externalize and test the concepts involved? How can we augment the cognitive processes? How can we record the progression of ideas? And, how do we know when we have arrived? Design has a symbiotic relationship with geometry. There are many design issues that are independent of any specific configurations. We might call these “pre-geometric” issues. And having arrived at a particular configuration, there may be many material interpretations of the same geometry. We might call these “post-geometric” issues. But geometry is central to design, and without appropriate geometric understanding, the resulting design will be limited. Geometry has two distinct components, one is a formal descriptive system and the other is a process of subjective evaluation.

title 3-Axis CNC Milling in Architectural Design

summary Physical scale models still have a role in architectural design. 3-axis CNC milling provides one way of making scale models both for study purposes and for presentation in durable materials such as wood. We present some types of scale models, the methods for creating them and the place in the design process that scale models occupy. We provide an overview of CNC milling procedures and issues and we describe the process of how one can creatively develop appropriate methods for milling different types of scale models and materials. Two case studies are presented with which we hope to convey not only the range of possible models that can be machined but also the way one creatively explores to arrive at appropriate milling strategies. Where apposite, we compare 3-axis CNC milling to newer technologies used for rapid prototyping but rapid prototyping is not a primary focus.

title Didactic Design: light and optics for preschool level

summary Since 2003, we have been developing a pedagogic proposal and didactic material for teaching Light and Optics to kindergarden children that enhances the construction of the first scientific thinking schemes. The design (industrial and graphic) applied to this project has generated an educational product composed of 44 objects. These materials allow teaching concepts such as: combination of colors, light indispensable to see, formation of shadows and images are not objects. These have been developed as inciters of curiosity, capable to awake the innate restlessness of children, achieving to stimulate their creativity. The purpose is to explore knowledge and construct their own ideas; enrich their experiences and inquire a reality that was drawn grey and tedious, generating a process of manipulation-action and then representation-conceptualization. This product has been successfully used as a pilot test in a kindergarden, reflecting significant gains in students’ science learning. [Full paper in Spanish]

title Diagraphics: an exposé of visual expression

summary This exposé introduces preparations for a publication based on what I have found to be a ‘missing link’ in the library of educational source materials. The skills necessary to record and interpret the complexity of the architectural design process are often illusive. The sophistication of computer modeling and graphics applications only adds to the dilemma of making clear and concise decisions about how to communicate the essence of one’s design intent. The publication will define and illustrate five Diagraphic models of analysis. Each offers ways of seeing and understanding the idiosyncrasies of recording the design process. Gestures, Traces, Pulls, Morphs and Transits exemplify specific modes of visual expression and integrate both their diagrammatic and graphic nature. The distinctive aspects of each model enable the student of architecture to choose appropriate and meaningful techniques for visual expression. The publication will also illustrate current and historically relevant examples of diagrammatic expression. These examples show how diagrams have been flexible over time in adapting to the needs of newly forming conceptual models, spatial analysis and belief systems.

summary Recent developments in digital technologies and smart materials have created new opportunities and are suggesting significant changes in the way we design and build architecture. Traditionally, however, there has always been a gap between the new technologies and their applications into other areas. Even though, most technological innovations hold the promise to transform the building industry and the architecture within, and although, there have been some limited attempts in this area recently; to date architecture has failed to utilize the vast amount of accumulated technological knowledge and innovations to significantly transform the industry. Consequently, the applications of new technologies to architecture remain remote and inadequate. Although, there have been some adaptations in this area recently, the improvements in architecture reflect only incremental progress, not the significant discoveries needed to transform the industry.

summary There is growing consensus among architectural critics and educators that there exists an increasing divide between the worlds of architectural education and practice. New social and cultural norms, new materials, and current global concerns, like sustainability, have largely influenced the need for an improved balance/integration between design theory and practice. This places schools of architecture around the world under pressure to provide their graduates with the requisite skills that support responsible design characterized by good design thinking strategies. The Caribbean School of Architecture, in addition to being affected by this predicament, has other pressures on its educational offerings. The region’s lack of resources and particular social issues mandates that graduates of the school adopt a responsible attitude towards design in the region. A positive attitude to such issues as sustainability, energy conservation and community will only come about through an effective transmission of particular architectural knowledge that is relevant to the region. The challenge (globally and in the Caribbean), therefore, is the provision of an innovative and effective way of supporting the student master dialogue in studio, facilitating the transfer of “practical, appropriate knowledge” needed by students to create safe, purposeful and responsible architecture. This paper exists within the research paradigm of providing digital teaching tools to beginning students of architecture. This digital research paradigm seeks to move digital technology (the computer) beyond functioning as an instrumental tool (in visualization, representation and fabrication) to becoming a “Socratic machine” that provides an appropriate environment for design learning. Research funds have been allocated to the author to research and develop the information component of the tool with special reference to the Caribbean. The paper will report on the results of prior investigations, describe the reaction and appreciation of the students and conclude with lessons learnt for the further development of the teaching tool.

summary The research paper exemplifies a novel information integrated design technique developed at ONL (Oosterhuis and Lenard), Netherlands, specifically appropriated for envisaging complex geometric forms. The ‘informed design technique’, apart from being highly instrumental in conceptualizing and generating the geometric component constituting architectural form in a parametric manner, is also efficiently utilized for precise computer aided manufacturing and construction of the speculated form. Geometric complexities inherent in contemporary architectural constructs and the time spent in appropriation of such topologies, fueled the ‘informed design’ approach, which caters to issues of timely construction, precision oriented design and production (visual and material) and parametric modeling attuned to budgetary fluctuations. This design-research approach has been tested and deployed by ONL, for conceiving ‘the Acoustic Barrier’ project, Utrecht Leidsche Rijn in the Netherlands and is treated as a generic case for exemplifying the ‘informed design’ technique in this research paper. The design methodology encourages visualizing architectural substantiations from a systems perspective and envisages upon a rule based adaptive systems approach involving extrapolation of contextual dynamics/ground data in terms of logical ‘rules’. These rules/conditionalities form the basis for spawning parametric logistics to be mapped upon geometric counterparts exemplifying the conception. The simulated parametric relations bind dimensional aspects (length, width, height etc.) of the geometric construct in a relational manner, eventually culminating in a 3D spatial envelope. This evolved envelope is subsequently intersected with a ‘parametric spatio-constructive grid’, creating specific intersecting points between the two. The hence extorted ‘point cloud’ configuration serves as a generic information field concerning highly specific coordinates, parameters and values for each individual point/constructive node it embodies. The relations between these points are directly linked with precise displacements of structural profiles and related scaling factors of cladding materials. Parallel to this object oriented modeling approach, a detailed database (soft/information component) is also maintained to administer the relations between the obtained points. To be able to derive constructible structural and cladding components from the point cloud configuration customized Scripts (combination of Lisp and Max scripts) process the point cloud database. The programmed script-routines, iteratively run calculations to generate steel-wireframes, steel lattice-structure and cladding panels along with their dimensions and execution drawing data. Optimization-routines are also programmed to make rectifications and small adjustments in the calculated data. This precise information is further communicated with CNC milling machines to manifest complex sectional profiles formulating the construct hence enabling timely and effective construction of the conceptualized form.

summary Architectural design, due to phenomena such as globalisation of the construction process, delocalisation of professional and industrial activities, spread of new construction materials and components, and the challenges of environmental sustainability, has become so comlex that traditional ways of managing the process are no longer sufficient. What is more, architectural works are required to be ever more performing and integrated - holistic. The paradigm of collaborative design is gaining ground as a way of dealing with these problems. Various process/ product models have been proposed over the years, making more or less use of advanced tools. In this field this study proposes a model in which operators from various cultural contexts are each supported by Intelligent Assistants (agents). The model simulates the design of works of architecture to the best professional practice. Exchange of information and knowledge between the operators is essential to enhance the design process. From this follows the need to interface not just data, but also meanings. This article shows how to improve communications between different applications, used by different operators, so as to integrate information and knowledge, whether formalised or not, in a project managed collaboratively by means of XML.

summary This paper introduces a generative design tool for the early design phases. The tool is a prototype plug-in for 3D studio max, based on 3dmax script language. This plug-in generates form alternatives with symbolic representations. Designer sets max and min size values and positional relation rules for different sub-parts of the whole form. After the generation process designers can apply transformation modifiers and materials built in 3D Studio Max to the picked alternative. And get possible 3D form solutions that meet with the constraints of the design problem.

summary We describe and analyze the fields of Smart and Nano Materials and their potential impact on architectural design and building fabrication. Distinguishing Smart and Nano materials, Smart Materials perform both sensing and actuating operations, whereas many Nano materials are capable of self-assembly. In general, Smart and Nano materials can perform like living systems, simulating human skin, the body’s muscles, a leaf’s chlorophyll and self-regeneration. Recognizing that the traditional partition between Materials Science and Architecture is obsolete, our intent is to show how these two fields are intrinsically connected, while growing evermore symbiotic as we progress into the futureKeeping the designer in mind, our paper begins with the question: “What Nano and Smart materials can be used in future architectural designs?” Outlining what such materials might mean for architectural fabrication and design, we claim that Smart and Nano Materials can imitate living organisms. Effective implementation of these materials will therefore allow designed spaces to operate as active organs within a larger dynamic organism, synthesizing both expressive intent and pragmatic considerations. This paper is a collaboration between an architect and a materials scientist on the future of materials and their influence in architecture. By giving examples of work already underway we intend to illustrate and suggest directions ranging from the functional to the expressive, from tectonics to morphology. We conclude with a reflection on the importance of future research between our two areas of knowledge.

summary As processes of use, interaction and transformation take center stage in various fields of design, electronic sensors, controllers, displays and actuators can significantly enhance the value of physical models. These technologies allow the development of novel computer interfaces for new kinds of interaction with virtual models, and in the future they can be expected to play an important role in the development of new types of active building components and materials for automated construction and dynamic runtime adaptations of inhabitable environments. However, embedding programmed logic into physical objects involves skills outside the traditional domains of expertise of designers and model makers and confronts them with a steep learning curve. The wide variety of alternative technologies and development tools available in this area has a particularly disorienting effect on novices. However, some early experiences suggest that mastery of this learning curve is easily within reach, given some basic introduction, guidance and support. To assist design students in acquiring a basic level of programming knowledge, better educational programming tools are still required. It is the intent of this paper to provide designers and educators with a starting point for explorations into this area as well as to report on the development of an educational approach to electronics programming called haptic programming.

summary This paper explains how complex curved structures can be constructed from flat standard panels. The main objective is to link both design techniques and digital fabrication methods to solve a recurrent problem in contemporary architectural design, building double curved structures. Secondly, it achieves this by using regular fabrication methods and standard construction materials, available and affordable for Latin-American countries. It describes the processes of programming a set of computational tools to study and develop designs to fabricate continuous complex curved structures. I will describe this through a series of experiments, using parametric design environments and scripted routines for CAD software to implement certain techniques to fabricate these designs using rapid prototyping machines. I compare different fabrication methods using computer numerically controlled machines, used to process these flat panels to obtain certain properties, allowing them to bend, twist, fold or stretch achieving these complex forms.

summary In 1999, the University of Kentucky (then the College of Architecture, now the College of Design-School of Architecture) established a Digital Design Studio to combine the strong tradition of handcrafting in the existing design program with those technologically sophisticated tools shaping the profession for the 21st century. Over a six-year period, this all-digital design studio has developed from a pedagogical model for developing new different ways of seeing and making architecture to a proof-of-concept real-world experience to coalesce state-of-the-art visualization techniques with current expectations of practice. Creating dynamic links between students, industry, and the profession has enabled the School of Architecture to provide leadership for practicing architects, to create an effective dialogue between industrial and design professionals, and to incorporate successfully leading-edge design pedagogy with the more technological applications that will shape the future of architecture practice. The materials presented here reflect a sequence of comprehensive digital projects produced under my direction from 1999 through 2005.

summary As space has become gradually intelligent because of the innovation of ubiquitous technology, the space itself is becoming one huge interface media, and the way digital technology intervenes in space design comes to be various. An intelligent space means that physical substances interact with their users as well as the inernal components beyond the concept of materials. However, current researches and developments in the relationship between the technology and spaces have not been immensely done. This paper renders the space applications including architertural factors, environmental factors and user behaviours in commercial areas. summary Topology optimization methods offer an interesting tool for architects and engineers as a rational basis for the choice of a structure’s initial form, particularly as developments in computer software are compatible with this approach. This can be argued from ecology, resource savings, static load design, financial and a number of other pragmatic reasons. But in an artistic/architectural perspective these are not decisive. Analogical design qualities include a tectonic appreciation of the properties of materials, metaphoric interpretation of intention and considerations of context. The paper describes an attempt to unify analytic and analogical approaches in an architectural education setting, using topology optimization software. It uses as examples recent student projects where the architectural design process based on a topology optimization approach has been investigated. The paper describes and presents results obtained by the students during the project. Further, a discussion is delivered concerning the improved understanding of tectonic design obtained by the student during the projects.

summary In 1995, Robin Evans points out in his book The Projective Cast how the development of techniques changed architecture and the space inhabited in times of Gothic and early Renaissance. We see a parallel phenomenon today, where the interplay of technology and tool gives shape to new design (Kolarevic 2005). Yet in opposition to the interwoven fields of design and craft of the late Gothic, today’s building sector is enormously diversified, and a growing complexity in the building process and number of used materials can be observed. This gives an opposite point of departure into a more integrated field of design and innovation in architectural design and building industry.
