summary The paper is a follow-up to earlier work investigating the research hypothesis that Virtual Reality (VR) is nowadays a maturetechnology, suitable for communicating planning ideas. A work in progress involving the redesign of two squares within the urbanfabric of a deprived Athenian neighbourhood is presented. A VR model of existing and proposed layouts was constructed, focusingon accuracy of visualisation, ease of navigation, online spatialized commenting mechanism and ease of access. User groups weresupported with appropriate training—researchers had the opportunity to observe the reactions of people and deliver questionnairesthat help identify problem areas related to technophobia, disbelief, past knowledge, communication skills, understanding of thevisualisation system used, usability of the navigation system as well as the commenting mechanism. Gender and social exclusionare key issues in this particular multicultural neighbourhood. Collecting demographic data on all participants (age, sex, educationlevel, employment, marital status, etc.) during the commenting process enables a series of analyses testing the ways the system isused.

title A Computational Approach to the Reconstruction of Surface Geometry from Early Temple Superstructures

summary Recovering the control or implicit geometry underlying temple architecture requires bringing together fragments of evidence from field measurements, relating these to mathematical and geometric descriptions in canonical texts and proposing "best-fit" constructive models. While scholars in the field have traditionally used manual methods, the innovative application of niche computational techniques can help extend the study of artefact geometry. This paper demonstrates the application of a hybrid computational approach to the problem of recovering the surface geometry of early temple superstructures. The approach combines field measurements of temples, close-range architectural photogrammetry, rule-based generation and parametric modelling. The computing of surface geometry comprises a rule-based global model governing the overall form of the superstructure, several local models for individual motifs using photogrammetry and an intermediate geometry model that combines the two. To explain the technique and the different models, the paper examines an illustrative example of surface geometry reconstruction based on studies undertaken on a tenth century stone superstructure from western India. The example demonstrates that a combination of computational methods yields sophisticated models of the constructive geometry underlying temple form and that these digital artefacts can form the basis for in depth comparative analysis of temples, arising out of similar techniques, spread over geography, culture and time.

summary Learning Management Systems (LMS) embody spaces that combine Virtual Classrooms, learning communities, repositories of educational resources and communication devices. The use by faculty members and students, in a campus containing the schools of Architecture, Design and Geography, of Open Source LMS MOODLE, during the years 2005-2006, was assessed. An analysis of the Digital Vestiges, the metadata in the logs database, distinguished between the levels of informative and communicational interaction. The results draw attention to a trend, similar to previous measurements in Latin America, of more use of ICT educational resources for informational purposes than communicational interactions between teachers and students.

summary As the Web grows in the Education area, the new Information and Communication Technologies have been introduced to improve quality in remote education, and more interaction among students through a collaborative environment that helps the learning process. In architecture, many experiences have occurred among schools, giving their students the opportunity to experience this new reality. Like a virtual “field trip”, students with different cultures and oriented under different methodologies, have the opportunity to be part of an inter-institutional group to design together. The social-history theories of Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934), Russian psychologist that dedicated his life to education, seams to fit the new forms of virtual interaction among students. summary This focus this paper is the translation of a digital information model that defines an object's surface properties and its connection to that which is real or physical. This research, while early in its investigation, seeks to explore architecture and digital design as a material process. The direct connection to output devices such as computer-numerically controlled routers provide a unique opportunity for controlled variation and serial differentiation and seeks to exploit mass customization rather than standardization. Through a series of studies the process from design to machine file to finish product is explored. This connection to digitally driven fabrication equipment creates within the design process an opportunity to realize ones designs both digitally and materially.

summary Typical modeling systems for spatial analysis employ data that represent the visual part of a landscape (e.g. relief and morphology), combined with other data about specific attributes (depending on the aims of an application). Thus, in a modeling environment, each place is described by a variety of properties that are not always visible. More of those “hidden” properties require special sensors and/or instruments to be captured and sometimes make their presence evident through human senses, such is sound. The present study takes advantage of wide spread technologies (such as GPS, VHF telecommunications and field sensors) and methodologies that are commonly used in telegeoprocessing – telegeomonitoring in order to simulate an existing acoustic environment. The aim is to acquire real time data about the sound (referenced to a particular area) and manipulate them in a CAD environment with purpose to visualize the sound influence in a specific landscape. Specifically it is proposed a method that transfers spatial data (collected from the field), directly into a modeling system (in the office, or in situ). In sequence the data is processed adequately to feed the modeling system that describes the current sound intensity of a place.

summary With the persistent stimulation of the immediate virtual environment our vision of reality, very often, is enriched by forms lucubrated in imaginary worlds, but we run into the difficulty of bringing them to the real world. If we channel this internal vision combining 3D origami techniques and digital visualization we could transform this difficulty into an opportunity of expression, materialization. With the main objective of structuring a new learning environment to approach an architectonic theme in virtual environments and with the correspondent theoretical support, sequences of immersive experiences are trialed delimiting techniques and methods. 3D origami techniques are applied to build-represent a new form and architectonic space and trough real time rendering engines, presentation, surfing the created model and its debate in net. The results obtained show a possible way to expand to the limit our threshold of vision and visualization that allows to emerge a new perception and to represent architectonic spaces. summary Architects draw to define design problems, to construct concepts, or to explore ideas. Representation not only connects various design activities and tasks, but also is utilized inside all these activities and tasks. Within the context of this research, the Design Capabilities of architects are defined as the skills used during the design process, including Conceptualization, Representation, Form Giving, Knowledge Building and Retrieving, and Decision-Making. Using representational techniques introduced by digital media during design development has altered what we can represent, perceive, and therefore conceive and imagine. Depending on primary data (a global questionnaire) and secondary data (synthesis of previous researches), the results of this investigation have substantiated that there has been a positive impact of digital media settings on the output of Representation capability of architects. The analysis reveals some detailed findings, which provide a better understanding of the subject matter.

This research aims at exploring the interrelationship between the media used by the architect and the development that might occur in the Decision-Making capability.The role of digital media in the architectural design process has become exploration and suggestion of what is being made, rather than, illustration of what has been already made. summary In this paper, we present a theoretical study on automated understanding of the design drawing. This can lead to design support through the natural interface of sketching. In earlier work, 24 plan-based conventions of depiction have been identified, such as grid, zone, axial system, contour, and element vocabulary. These are termed graphic units. Graphic units form a good basis for recognition of drawings as they combine shape with meaning. We present some of the theoretical questions that have to be resolved before an implementation can be made. The contribution of this paper is: (i) identification of domain knowledge which is necessary for recognition; (ii) outlining combined strategy of multi-agent systems and online recognition; (iii) functional structure for agents and their organisation to converge on sketch recognition.

summary In this paper we outline a strategy of structured reflection to improve reflection by students in a course on the implication of CAAD, design theory, and design methodology. Earlier editions of the course showed that students often did not evolve their learning beyond a checklist level. Reflection is an important mechanism to improve learning from design situations. After a consideration of the main approaches to design reflection, we take up Schön’s notion of reflection and provide support for structured reflection in CAAD education, based on earlier experiences with structured question lists in a civil engineering course. Findings after the first year’s run show a deeper level of reflection on a more elaborate level.

summary This work is about realizing that human perception is inherent to architecture. It is an asset and a trait subject to training and development in an empirical way, involving physical and manual action. It cannot be taught literally through convention and logic reasoning. It is a human achievement of great significance built on intellectual and scientific knowledge. It is something, being physical and empirical, that is supported on instrumental procedure. The computer, as a machine and an instrument, does not shorten the empirical experience of manipulation; on the contrary, it enhances J.J. Gibson’s findings about the perception of space in relation to eye and body movement. Being a cybernetic machine the computer may, and shall, evolve, and become perceptive. In order for that to happen, it is important to keep in mind the mechanism of human perception. Through producing a computerized model of a major architectural work, we develop natural knowledge about its physical features and the thought that lies underneath. To be able to use the computer as an instrument provides a user with explicit knowledge about its ways and mechanism that has to be made available. It involves training, which is to a great extent self-explanatory, and also explicit knowledge about the conventions that are being used, such as programming, reasoning and trigonometry.

summary Design has been described as making inspire decisions with incomplete information. True, we may use prior knowledge, we may even think we understand the causalites involved, but what really matters is exploration: of new forms, of new materials, and speculation about the response to the resulting effects. Essentially, this exploration has its own dynamics, involving intuition and spontaneity, and without which there is no design. But of course we all know that this is not the whole story. Design is different to 'craft'; to directly 'making' or 'doing'. It necessarily has to be predictive in order to anticipate what the consequence of the 'making' or 'doing' will be. Therefore we inevitably have to counter balance our intuition with a well developed sense of premeditation. We have to be able to reason about future events, about the consequence of something that has not yet being made. There is always going to be an advantage if this reasoning can be achieved with a degree of precision. So how can we progress from intuition to precision? What abstractions can we use to represent, externalize and test the concepts involved? How can we augment the cognitive processes? How can we record the progression of ideas? And, how do we know when we have arrived? Design has a symbiotic relationship with geometry. There are many design issues that are independent of any specific configurations. We might call these “pre-geometric” issues. And having arrived at a particular configuration, there may be many material interpretations of the same geometry. We might call these “post-geometric” issues. But geometry is central to design, and without appropriate geometric understanding, the resulting design will be limited. Geometry has two distinct components, one is a formal descriptive system and the other is a process of subjective evaluation.

title 3-Axis CNC Milling in Architectural Design

summary Physical scale models still have a role in architectural design. 3-axis CNC milling provides one way of making scale models both for study purposes and for presentation in durable materials such as wood. We present some types of scale models, the methods for creating them and the place in the design process that scale models occupy. We provide an overview of CNC milling procedures and issues and we describe the process of how one can creatively develop appropriate methods for milling different types of scale models and materials. Two case studies are presented with which we hope to convey not only the range of possible models that can be machined but also the way one creatively explores to arrive at appropriate milling strategies. Where apposite, we compare 3-axis CNC milling to newer technologies used for rapid prototyping but rapid prototyping is not a primary focus.

The proceedings of the Generative CAD Symposium held at Carnegie Mellon University, both summarizes the three decades of work in this area and reveals the beginnings of research and application expected in this domain. After all, will designers be able to effortlessly and intelligently generate potential design solutions that respond to appropriate design requirements and designers’ intentions?

summary Some experts suggest that urban design plans in US cities may lack adequate coverage of the three-dimensional design aspects of the built environment. 3D digital models may help designers visualize and interact with design alternatives, large urban data sets, and 3D information more effectively, thus correcting this problem. Case studies of recent urban design plans that have used 3D digital models may indicate whether these technologies can increase the quality of the plan. This research discusses the role 3D urban models can play in supporting designers in addressing the 3D design aspects. A literature review focused on reviewing secondary sources to construct or adopt theoretical propositions against which the empirical data can be compared and contrasted. A case study involved investigating the methods with which 3D models have been used in developing a selected urban design plan. The content analysis of the case study refuted the premise that the plan would inadequately address 3D aspects and utilize 3D information, and indicated an effective usage of 3D modeling to analyze and represent most of the 3D and 2D information elements and issues. The results are consistent with a hypothesis that the effective usage of 3D modeling would result in the effective coverage of 3D information and issues. The effective usage of the model’s functionalities has improved the quality of the decision-making process through improving designers’ cognitive capabilities and providing a platform for communicating design ideas among and across design teams.
