summary We describe and analyze the fields of Smart and Nano Materials and their potential impact on architectural design and building fabrication. Distinguishing Smart and Nano materials, Smart Materials perform both sensing and actuating operations, whereas many Nano materials are capable of self-assembly. In general, Smart and Nano materials can perform like living systems, simulating human skin, the body’s muscles, a leaf’s chlorophyll and self-regeneration. Recognizing that the traditional partition between Materials Science and Architecture is obsolete, our intent is to show how these two fields are intrinsically connected, while growing evermore symbiotic as we progress into the futureKeeping the designer in mind, our paper begins with the question: “What Nano and Smart materials can be used in future architectural designs?” Outlining what such materials might mean for architectural fabrication and design, we claim that Smart and Nano Materials can imitate living organisms. Effective implementation of these materials will therefore allow designed spaces to operate as active organs within a larger dynamic organism, synthesizing both expressive intent and pragmatic considerations. This paper is a collaboration between an architect and a materials scientist on the future of materials and their influence in architecture. By giving examples of work already underway we intend to illustrate and suggest directions ranging from the functional to the expressive, from tectonics to morphology. We conclude with a reflection on the importance of future research between our two areas of knowledge.

title New processes of digital design: intelligent skin

summary The project consists of the generation of a bioclimatic architectonic skin that acts like a living creature, responding in real time to environmental conditions, allowing a greater inner comfort by means of the regulation of factors like temperature, radiation, humidity and illumination. It starts with the study of a vegetal epidermis (interface between the environment and the alive organism), transposing this information on the behavior of a living creature front to environmental factors, creating an architectonic skin that acts in the same way. Environmental data are incorporated soon in the computer and will be the digital tool the one in charge of interpolating such, generating a non predictable result. A project of these characteristics is inserted in diverse fields within the new architectonic tendencies: the intelligent architecture, of data, biomimetic, sustainable and bioclimatic. summary The study described in this paper evolves within the larger context of a research aimed at inquiring into analogies between architecture and nature, and more specifically between architecture and biology. Biology is a recursive source of architectural inspiration due to the tight relationship between form and function, the natural balance of forces and the corresponding geometric solutions found in living beings. Roughly, one can classify historical analogies between architecture and biology into two main categories. The first tries to mimic biological forms and the second biological processes. The specific goal of the described study is to find how new technologies can redefine and support the process of constructing such analogies. It uses as a case study a tower project designed by the architect Manuel Gausa (ACTAR, Barcelona) called Tornado Tower because of its complex shape inspired in the frozen form of a tornado. Due to the geometric irregularities of the tower, Gausa’s team had difficulties in designing it, especially because solving the structural problems required constant redrawing. This paper describes the first part of the study which primary goal was to conceive a parametric program that encoded the overall shape of the Tornado Tower. The idea was to use the program to simplify the drawing process. This required a mathematical study of spirals and helices which are at the conceptual basis of the external structure and shape of the tower. However, the program encodes not only the shape of Gausa’s tower, but also the shapes of other buildings with conceptual similarities. Such class of shapes is very recurrent in nature with different scales and with different utilities. Therefore, one can argue that the program makes a mathematical connection between a given natural class of shapes and architecture. The second part of the study will be devoted to extending the program with a genetic algorithm with the goal of guiding the generation of solutions taking into account their structural fitness. This way, the analogy with genetic procedures will be emphasized by the study of the evolution of forms and its limits of feasibility. In summary, the bionic shape analogy is made by the generation of mimetic natural forms and a genetic process analogy starts with the parametric treatment of shape based on code manipulations. At the end the program will establish an analogy between architecture and biology both terms of form and process.

summary The paper describes the current situation concerning career opportunities in the field of architecture in developed western countries. Several aspects that are almost universal mark this situation. Firstly, there are too many architects chasing traditional work in competition with structural (civil) engineers. This is not surprising in consideration of the fact, that the architectural education industry produces far too many new architects for the economy to absorb. In Germany, the number is almost three times too many. Secondly, the needs of the building industry have changed over the past twenty years so that the skills that architects want to offer are not necessarily those that are sought. Lastly, the constant specialisation of work has continued unabated. Architects, as generalists, have idly watched their areas of expertise be usurped from neighbouring fields like civil and structural engineering The reasons for this crisis are manifold. In the schools of architecture, the discussions often deal with form or formal arguments, which, in fact, have little or no relevance to the building industry. This position was tenable so long as the clients were willing to accept formal arguments in order to receive buildings of high quality or current social relevance (i.e. current architectural fashion). With the dual aspects of globalisation and a shift to maintaining building stocks rather than producing new buildings, the tolerance for “architectural” discussions has been reduced even further. Indeed, the monetary pressures overwhelm almost all other aspects, including so-called green issues. What is more, most of the monetary issues are time based. Time represents, perhaps, the largest pressure in any current planning project. The clients expect expedient, accurate and inexpensive solutions. If architects are not able to produce these, the clients will (and do) go elsewhere. The authors argue that there remain serious problems to be solved for architects and the metier in general. Ever cheaper, ever faster and ever encompassing information technologies offer the architectural community a chance to turn recent trends on their head. By using information technologies to their full potential, architects can reassert themselves as the coordinators of building information and processes. Simply put, this means less photorealistic rendering and more databases, which may be unappealing for those architects who have positioned themselves as “designers” and are able to talk long on form, but short on cost or logistics. Nonetheless, the situation is not lost, so long as architects are able to recognise what is desired from the point of view of the client and what is desired from the point of view of the architect. It is not a question of one or the other. Architects must be able to offer innovative design solutions that not only address the fiscal, legal and programmatic constraints, but also push the boundaries at to the position of architecture in the community at large. For educators, it must be made clear that the real potential architects possess is their encompassing knowledge of the building process including their expertise concerning questions of architectural form, function, history and art. Precisely while they are generalists are architects invaluable in a sea of specialists. The biggest hurdle to asserting this in the past has been the control of the vast amounts of information. This is no longer a problem and also no longer an excuse. In the education of architects, it must be made clear that their role dictates sovereignty over architectural information. Architectural Information Management is a necessary skill alongside the more traditional architectural skills. A brief outlook as to how this might come about is detailed in the paper. The authors propose didactic steps to achieve this. Primarily, the education of computer supported planning should not simply end with a series of lectures or seminars, but culminate in integrated Design Studios (which including Design-Build scenarios).

Currently it works in the evaluation of this method making some examples and the computer implementation of several tasks. This work suggests specific features for architectural animations and its possibilities to express design issues, remarking the visual diversity and development of meanings. summary This paper describes the theoretical and technological parameters for a digital interface, in development by MOM/LOW (Morar de Outras Maneiras/ Living in Other Ways), intended at the autonomous production of dwelling. It introduces the current formal and informal processes of production of dwelling arguing for the need of an instrument to enable both the distribution of alternative building components and user participation. It discusses the main questions on agency and machine intelligence as to show the need to take human-machine asymmetry into account in interface design. It also points out the main problems regarding the current technology for creating 3D digital interactive interfaces, and indicates one possible way to use the available technology and locate agency in the event. It concludes by showing that interface design can take advantage of human dialogical ability and of the machine’s capacity to offer material for that dialogue, without humanising the machine or preconditioning human responses. The application of the Technologies of Information and Communication (TIC) in the processes of architectural design has expanded the spectrum of what can be observed from human living and habitable space. This way the average digital medium allows us to know more about our daily life; not only in the functional or productive moment but also in the nonfunctional and specifically emotional instances. This new media allows us to observe with more precision the human practices in their diverse states of mobility: rest, leisure, entertainment, distraction, etc. These observed and decoded qualities can be carried into data and then integrate it into the act of design as a fresh piece of information that can organize matter. summary One of the major challenges facing the professionals involved in the home modification process is to succeed in adapting the environments in a way that enables an optimal fit between the individual and the setting in which he or she operates. The challenge originates primarily from the fundamental characteristic of design - one can see and test the final result of home modifications only after they have been completed. The goal of this study was to address this problem by developing and evaluating an interactive living environments model, HabiTest, which will facilitate the planning, design and assessment of optimal home and work settings for people with physical disabilities. This paper describes the HabiTest tool, an interactive model that has been implemented via an immersive virtual reality system which displays three-dimensional renderings of specific environments, and which responds to user-driven manipulations such as navigation within the environment and alteration of its design. Initial results of a usability evaluation of this interactive environment by users are described.

This article looks at the big picture and outlines a series of recent developments in digital technologies that would enable architecture to become sensate, supple and globally networked at the speed of light. New thinking, new commerce, new polity, and new architectures are emerging out of the apparently disparate yet closely related design and technological inventions. We are on the verge of moving from the outmoded notions of space and time to the post-spatial notion of sensate and supple space-time.

summary Sixteen (makers) are a group of practicing architects, academics, designers and makers who assemble when key questions surrounding design, fabrication, use and adaptability in architecture emerge. Initially, the group was formed out of a motivation to engage as designers with the physical and tactile aspects of production without a dependency upon drawing. Now, in the post digital age, the age of digital fabrication, boundaries between drawing and making, between the designer and the maker, have dissolved. Consequently sixteen*(makers) work is now engaged with questions of knowledge transfer, expertise, and innovation where modes of investigation are equally embedded within in the analogue and the digital world. This article relates to our latest ongoing work which is due for completion in 2005/06. The work has been developed as a specific response to the award of an architectural residency by the Art and Architecture Partnership at Kielder Park, Northumbria, England. From the outset, it has not been a requirement of the residency that an outcome is identified early on. In fact, as I write, the outcome remains open. Presented with an extraordinary site and coinciding with a time of rapid change the work has begun by exploring a design process that is adaptable, indeterminate, and informed by site conditions. In October 2003, sixteen*(makers) were awarded an architecture residency by The Art and Architecture Programme at Kielder (AAPK) of Northumbria, UK. This organization is well known for commissioning works such as the ‘Belvedere’ by Softroom and the ‘Skyspace’ by James Turrell. Coordinated by Peter Sharp, AAPK consists of a number of large public bodies, including The Forestry Commission, Northumbrian Water and Tyndale District Council. Together they manage a land area of 62,000 ha’s centred on the UK’s largest reservoir and surrounded on all sides by one of Europe’s largest managed forests.

summary This paper reports on the development of a new VR (Virtual Reality) system with the world’s largest hemispherical screen, which can display high immersive, life-size scale, stereoscopic images. A cluster of PCs is used in master-slave architecture, with 18 slave PCs for rendering left eye and right eye images, and the master for synchronizing the images for stereo view. Contents can be shared with a VR system operating on a notebook with a new VR system developed as part of the same VR toolkit. We apply the system to a real, collaborative architectural design project.

summary This article intends to present a research work in process which targets the production of design principles for multi-users graphic interfaces, allowing the creation of dialog spaces for a communitarian purpose, using the knowledge from system-user and user-interface interaction and from semiotic and cognitive psychology. It blends studies in both technological and perceptive fields, focusing on interfaces production with a non-linear structure, with an associative navigability, mostly commanded by signs and graphic elements of easy comprehension. The research goal is to understand how to allow users to build an individualized portion of cyberspace, where dialogs can be established with other community members. summary The underlying assumption of the research is that media the representational environments of architects’ design thoughts, have impact on the way by which architects practice design and develop their design capabilities. This research aims at exploring the interrelationship between the media used by the architect and the development that might occur in the Decision-Making capability.The role of digital media in the architectural design process has become exploration and suggestion of what is being made, rather than, illustration of what has been already made. Depending on primary data (a global questionnaire) and secondary data (synthesis of the previous research), the results have substantiated the observation that there has been positive impact of digital media settings on the Decision-Making capability of architects. The analysis reveals some detailed findings, which provide a better understanding of the subject matter.

Representation not only connects various design activities and tasks, but also is utilized inside all these activities and tasks. Within the context of this research, the Design Capabilities of architects are defined as the skills used during the design process, including Conceptualization, Representation, Form Giving, Knowledge Building and Retrieving, and Decision-Making. Using representational techniques introduced by digital media during design development has altered what we can represent, perceive, and therefore conceive and imagine. Depending on primary data (a global questionnaire) and secondary data (synthesis of previous researches), the results of this investigation have substantiated that there has been a positive impact of digital media settings on the output of Representation capability of architects. The analysis reveals some detailed findings, which provide a better understanding of the subject matter.

summary In this paper, we present a theoretical study on automated understanding of the design drawing. This can lead to design support through the natural interface of sketching. In earlier work, 24 plan-based conventions of depiction have been identified, such as grid, zone, axial system, contour, and element vocabulary. These are termed graphic units. Graphic units form a good basis for recognition of drawings as they combine shape with meaning. We present some of the theoretical questions that have to be resolved before an implementation can be made. The contribution of this paper is: (i) identification of domain knowledge which is necessary for recognition; (ii) outlining combined strategy of multi-agent systems and online recognition; (iii) functional structure for agents and their organisation to converge on sketch recognition.
