title Towards Ornamatics
source Digital Design: The Quest for New Paradigms [23nd eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-3-2] Lisbon (Portugal) 21-24 September 2005, pp. 253-260

summary Computer aided modelling and drafting protocols – in combination with new production technologies – have contributed to wholly new ways of shaping building elements. Some examples of new techniques, which have recently become very successful in building production and in architectural design education, are: 3D Rapid Prototyping; 2,5D and 3D Milling and computer aided Shape Cutting (notably using laser and water jet modes). Such new approaches not only create new opportunities for traditional production processes (including physical modelling), they also offer new perspectives for design and manufacturing on the level of architectural components and connections. We foresee innovative approaches to building product design, with a renewed interest in expressive Ornamentation. A phenomenological development we would like to address using the concept of ‘Ornamatics’. This contribution explores the potentials of product design with a renewed focus on ornamentation, involving the active utilization of computer aided modelling and manufacturing techniques. The paper furthermore documents results and findings of a series of explorative studies carried out within an educational laboratory environment.

title DecoSketch – Towards Calligraphic Approaches to Interior Design
source Digital Design: The Quest for New Paradigms [23nd eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-3-2] Lisbon (Portugal) 21-24 September 2005, pp. 665-670

summary Computer-Aided Design tools have long played an important role in architecture design. However, we need to go beyond direct manipulation to devise new tools that will expedite the interior design and decoration. Indeed, conventional CAD systems, while providing ever increasing functionality, do not provide equal support to the drafting and drawing tasks. This makes even the simplest drawings a complicated endeavor. Draftspeople struggle with different concepts that those learnt from their earlier days in school and have to think long and hard to translate familiar sequences of operations to commands which require navigating a dense jungle of menus. The term calligraphic interfaces was coined by us to designate a large family of applications organized around the drawing paradigm, using a digital stylus and a tablet-and-screen combination as seen most recently in Tablet PCs®. Using these, users can enter drawings in a natural manner, largely evocative of drafting techniques that were perfected for pencil-and-paper media. This paper presents a simple calligraphic interface to explore interior design literally from the ground up. The Decosketch application is a modeling and visualization tool structured around 2 _D architectural plants. Its purpose is to help architects or customers easily creating and navigating through house designs starting from the floorplan and moving to their three-dimensional representation. Moreover, both 2D and 3D representations can be independently edited, providing a natural interface that tries to adhere to well-known representations and idioms used by architects when drafting using pencil and paper.

title At Full-Scale | From Installation to Inhabitation
source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 1, pp. 97-102
summary In 1999, the University of Kentucky (then the College of Architecture, now the College of Design-School of Architecture) established a Digital Design Studio to combine the strong tradition of handcrafting in the existing design program with those technologically sophisticated tools shaping the profession for the 21st century. Over a six-year period, this all-digital design studio has developed from a pedagogical model for developing new different ways of seeing and making architecture to a proof-of-concept real-world experience to coalesce state-of-the-art visualization techniques with current expectations of practice. Creating dynamic links between students, industry, and the profession has enabled the School of Architecture to provide leadership for practicing architects, to create an effective dialogue between industrial and design professionals, and to incorporate successfully leading-edge design pedagogy with the more technological applications that will shape the future of architecture practice. The materials presented here reflect a sequence of comprehensive digital projects produced under my direction from 1999 through 2005.

title Hands Free: A Wearable Surveying System for Building Surveying
source Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures 2005 [Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 1-4020-3460-1] Vienna (Austria) 20–22 June 2005, pp. 351-360
summary Activities in the building industry in Europe concentrate increasingly on a combination of renovation and new-building. A prerequisite for comprehensive IT supported design and planning in the context of existing buildings is both the use of on-site computer- aided surveying techniques and the integration of all professional disciplines in an integrated information and communication system. The starting point is often the building survey on site. An examination of currently available IT tools and hardware shows insufficient support for planning within existing built contexts. Surveying equipment has been derived from other disciplines without being modified to cater for the specific needs of building surveying. This paper describes a concept for computer-aided digital building surveying equipment based upon a wearable computer and AR to close the gap between specialist equipment adapted for use in building surveying and the need for simple straightforward surveying equipment for architects and engineers.

title Digital-Media Impact on the Representation Capability of Architects
source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 1, pp. 483-489
summary Architects draw to define design problems, to construct concepts, or to explore ideas. Representation not only connects various design activities and tasks, but also is utilized inside all these activities and tasks. Within the context of this research, the Design Capabilities of architects are defined as the skills used during the design process, including Conceptualization, Representation, Form Giving, Knowledge Building and Retrieving, and Decision-Making. Using representational techniques introduced by digital media during design development has altered what we can represent, perceive, and therefore conceive and imagine. Depending on primary data (a global questionnaire) and secondary data (synthesis of previous researches), the results of this investigation have substantiated that there has been a positive impact of digital media settings on the output of Representation capability of architects. The analysis reveals some detailed findings, which provide a better understanding of the subject matter.

title Filmic Development of Architectural Animations
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 3 - no. 3, 299-316
summary This paper proposes a general method to make animated presentations of architectural designs, based on cinematographic techniques. Particularly, it reviews theoretical documenttion about filmmaking as well as several productions that exhibit remarkable locations. The proposed method first comprises of a planning stage, with the narrative and graphic formulation of the presentation. Next is an elaboration or adjustment stage for the digital modelling of the design, and finally, there is an animation production and editing stage. Likewise, the research sets up a computer implementation of some activities and characteristics, and experiments in the programming of camera movements for architectural animations. In general, this work suggests focusing on the communication of the qualitative features of the design, instead of the elaboration of the digital model, and on emphasizing the visual diversity, graphic style and narrative construction of the presentation.

title Diagraphics: an exposé of visual expression
source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 1, pp. 400-404
summary This exposé introduces preparations for a publication based on what I have found to be a ‘missing link’ in the library of educational source materials. The skills necessary to record and interpret the complexity of the architectural design process are often illusive. The sophistication of computer modeling and graphics applications only adds to the dilemma of making clear and concise decisions about how to communicate the essence of one’s design intent. The publication will define and illustrate five Diagraphic models of analysis. Each offers ways of seeing and understanding the idiosyncrasies of recording the design process. Gestures, Traces, Pulls, Morphs and Transits exemplify specific modes of visual expression and integrate both their diagrammatic and graphic nature. The distinctive aspects of each model enable the student of architecture to choose appropriate and meaningful techniques for visual expression. The publication will also illustrate current and historically relevant examples of diagrammatic expression. These examples show how diagrams have been flexible over time in adapting to the needs of newly forming conceptual models, spatial analysis and belief systems.

title Adaptive Generative Patterns: design and construction of Prague Biennale pavilion
source Computing in Architecture / Re-Thinking the Discourse: The Second International Conference of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2006), 25-27 April 2006, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
summary This paper describes an experimental practice-based research project that considered design process, implementation and construction of a pavilion built to be part of the Performative Space section of the International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Prague 2005. The project was conceptualized as a time-bound performative situation with a parasite-like relationship to its host environment. Its design has emerged through an innovative iterative process that utilized digital simulative and procedural techniques and was formed in response to place-specific behavioral challenges. This paper presents the project as an in-depth case-study of digital methods in design, mass customization and unified methods of production. In particular, it considers the use of Voronoi patterns for production of structural elements providing detail on programming and construction techniques in relationship to design aspirations and practical constraints.

title Integrating Digital and Building Technologies: Towards a New Architectural Composite
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 3 - no. 2, 181-190
summary This paper presents an ongoing research project about the development of the materials and fabrication techniques for a fundamentally new class of architectural composite. This type of composite, which is a representative example of an even broader class of smart architectural material, has the potential to change the design and function of an architectural structure or living environment. As of today, this kind of composite does not exist. Once completed, this will be the first technology on its own. We believe this study will lay the fundamental groundwork for a new paradigm in surface engineering that may be of considerable significance in architecture, building and construction industry, and materials science.

summary Design is a complex process that is information and communication intensive. In a design context, the use of knowledge technologies can assist designers in making informed design decisions. This paper reports on an educational experiment that implements an intelligent urban design aid. This experiment facilitates students to do research in a systematic way by using ICKT methods, techniques and tools in order to improve the quality of their urban design. We outline the process, describe the intelligent techniques, discuss the results of the educational experiment, and explore the approach’s potential for real-life design practices.

title Skin That Fits: Designing and constructing cladding systems with as-built structural data
source Smart Architecture: Integration of Digital and Building Technologies [Proceedings of the 2005 Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design In Architecture / ISBN 0-9772832-0-8] Savannah (Georgia) 13-16 October 2005, pp. 236-245
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2005.236
summary An awkward interface exists between the structure and skin of complex architecture. The primary structure is typically allowed much higher tolerance ranges than that of the cladding industry, due primarily to the delicate nature of the building envelope which, above all, must prevent water penetration and meet the aesthetic requirements of the architect and client. As architecture has integrated advanced design and fabrication techniques to realize increasingly complex shapes, this problem has been aggravated because of the tangency requirements for high gloss curved finish surfaces and the larger variations found with rolled steel columns and undulating concrete forms. To date, most innovations in this area have been focused upon mechanical connections that can be adjusted and shimmed, thus requiring increased design engineering and on-site labor costs for effective implementation. It would be preferable to manufacture cladding components that are properly adjusted to the actual site conditions, negating the need to predict and accommodate potential dimensional variation with complex connections. The research provides a model for implementing long distance laser scanning technology to facilitate a real-time parametric BIM, herein called an Isomodel.

source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 2, pp. 679-683
summary This paper aims at introducing the main aspects of a research on architectural representation and the usage of new technologies in the process of development of an architectural project, which has been conducted at a department of Graphical Expression. The authors of this paper would like to outline the most excellent and innovating aspects introduced by a number of architectural proposals which involve actively the application of these techniques. The chosen case studies for this paper are among the European contemporary architectural panorama. The authors will analyze some projects of architectural studios which were involved in the urban transformation brought about by celebration of the Forum of the Cultures 2004. These new ways of architectural representation have had, in this specific case, a significant effect within the context of a technological revolution that allows the conception of new forms and textures and the reflection on the increasingly complex processes to generate architectural space. summary Collaborative design activity that involves remote multilateral, multidisciplinary communication has become more commonplace with the electronic means to communicate across any distance in real time. The communication itself can be both an important repository of project information and an important part of the process of conceptualisation and design development. This research has explored the apparent shortcomings inherent in commonly used means of communication and how these impact on the design process. This paper describes research that has taken as a starting point the analysis and observation of actual design communication from the archive of an internationally published collaborative project involving disciplinarily diverse and globally scattered participants. Through the analysis, we have identified characteristics of communication tools or information environments that would address the particular issues found to impede collaboration while fostering those aspects that support it. The findings have been used to inform the design, specification and implementation of collaborative information spaces based on Wiki software.

title Digital Art A Field of Inquiry for Contemporary Architecture
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 3 - no. 3, 355-372
summary This article investigates the interplay of digital technology, art and architecture and it presents a series of experimental workshops developed at LAGEAR (Graphic Laboratory for the Experience of Architecture, School of Architecture at UFMG, Brazil). The intention of these workshops is to include an artistic approach to the work in a computer lab dedicated to teaching and researching architecture. At first, a discussion on the relationship between art and architecture is presented, followed by an analysis of the enhancement of such relationship with the advent of digital technology. Then a series of works developed by artists and students in collaboration is described. The article concludes with a discussion on the role of digital art for architectural education. It is proposed that it may be one of the most adequate fields for students to freely investigate contemporary issues, such as interactivity and automation, which are now shaping our built environment.

doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2005.156
summary The development of digital fabrication has reintroduced material processes with digital processes. There has been much discussion about the tool and the objects of the tool, but little discussion of the implication of the material process on the digital process. A brief historical review on the development of computer numerical control and the origins of the Bézier curve reveals an instrumental fact: computer numerical controlled tools necessitated advancements in computational surfaces which eventually led to NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) surfaces. In other words, the origins of NURBS surfaces resides in its relation to material processes, rather than many current approaches that develop free form surfaces and then force the tool onto the material without regard to the material properties. From this historical and mathematical review, this project develops toward more intelligent construction methods based on the integration of NURBS differential geometry paired with material qualities and processes. Specifically, a digital technique of developing conceptual NURBS geometry into piecewise surface patches are then flattened based on the material thickness and density. From these flattened patches, a material technique is developed to intelligently remove material to allow the rigid flat material to re-develop into physical surface patches. The goal of this research is to develop digital and material techniques toward intelligent construction based on the correspondence between digitally driven surface and digitally driven material processes. The application of this technique as a rational and flexible system is to support the dynamic response of form and material toward such performative aspects as structure, daylight, ventilation, and thermal properties.
