summary Architects draw to define design problems, to construct concepts, or to explore ideas. Representation not only connects various design activities and tasks, but also is utilized inside all these activities and tasks. Within the context of this research, the Design Capabilities of architects are defined as the skills used during the design process, including Conceptualization, Representation, Form Giving, Knowledge Building and Retrieving, and Decision-Making. Using representational techniques introduced by digital media during design development has altered what we can represent, perceive, and therefore conceive and imagine. Depending on primary data (a global questionnaire) and secondary data (synthesis of previous researches), the results of this investigation have substantiated that there has been a positive impact of digital media settings on the output of Representation capability of architects. The analysis reveals some detailed findings, which provide a better understanding of the subject matter.

summary The underlying assumption of the research is that media the representational environments of architects’ design thoughts, have impact on the way by which architects practice design and develop their design capabilities. This research aims at exploring the interrelationship between the media used by the architect and the development that might occur in the Decision-Making capability.The role of digital media in the architectural design process has become exploration and suggestion of what is being made, rather than, illustration of what has been already made. Depending on primary data (a global questionnaire) and secondary data (synthesis of the previous research), the results have substantiated the observation that there has been positive impact of digital media settings on the Decision-Making capability of architects. summary This exposé introduces preparations for a publication based on what I have found to be a ‘missing link’ in the library of educational source materials. The skills necessary to record and interpret the complexity of the architectural design process are often illusive. The sophistication of computer modeling and graphics applications only adds to the dilemma of making clear and concise decisions about how to communicate the essence of one’s design intent. The publication will define and illustrate five Diagraphic models of analysis. Each offers ways of seeing and understanding the idiosyncrasies of recording the design process. Gestures, Traces, Pulls, Morphs and Transits exemplify specific modes of visual expression and integrate both their diagrammatic and graphic nature. The distinctive aspects of each model enable the student of architecture to choose appropriate and meaningful techniques for visual expression. The publication will also illustrate current and historically relevant examples of diagrammatic expression. These examples show how diagrams have been flexible over time in adapting to the needs of newly forming conceptual models, spatial analysis and belief systems.

summary The paper is a follow-up to earlier work investigating the research hypothesis that Virtual Reality (VR) is nowadays a maturetechnology, suitable for communicating planning ideas. A work in progress involving the redesign of two squares within the urbanfabric of a deprived Athenian neighbourhood is presented. A VR model of existing and proposed layouts was constructed, focusingon accuracy of visualisation, ease of navigation, online spatialized commenting mechanism and ease of access. User groups weresupported with appropriate training—researchers had the opportunity to observe the reactions of people and deliver questionnairesthat help identify problem areas related to technophobia, disbelief, past knowledge, communication skills, understanding of thevisualisation system used, usability of the navigation system as well as the commenting mechanism. Gender and social exclusionare key issues in this particular multicultural neighbourhood. Collecting demographic data on all participants (age, sex, educationlevel, employment, marital status, etc.) during the commenting process enables a series of analyses testing the ways the system isused.

summary The impact of ubiquitous digital technologies on the analysis and synthesis of our urban environment is undoubtedly great. The urban topography is overlaid by an invisible, yet very tangible digital topography that is increasingly affecting our urban life. As W. J. Mitchell (Mitchell 2005) pointed out, the digital revolution has filled our world with “electronic instruments of displacement” that “embed the virtual in the physical, and weave it seamlessly into daily urban life”. The mobile phone, the most integrated mobile device is closely related to the notion of a digital identity, our personal identity on this digital space. The Bluetooth is the mainly used direct communication protocol between mobile phones today and in this scope, each device has its own unique ID, its “MAC address”. This paper investigates the potential use of recording and analysing Bluetooth enabled devices in the urban scale in understanding the interrelation between the physical and the digital topographies.

title A Design Model Using Mutation Shape Emergence

summary The ability to recognize properties and characteristics unforeseen in the early stage of design, namely shape emergence, is considered one of vital aspects of human visual perception in creative thinking. This study aims at developing a design model by using an extended theory of shape emergence, mutation shape emergence which we call. The first part of this paper describes the definition of mutational emergent shapes clearly. In the second part, possibility of discovering mutational emergent shapes will be explored through protocol analysis. On the basis of the results of these efforts, we will examine closely the cognitive mechanism to discover mutational emergent shapes. In the last stage, based on our results we propose a design model for understanding the cognitive process implications for training architects.

title Cognitive environments for design: a relational study among traditional and digital media in the conception of the architectural project

summary This research investigates the cognitive design processes used by architects in conceptualizing design ideas using traditional and digital media. Data were gathered from: an initial design process of two groups of individuals using both design media to complete two videotaped isomorphic tasks; questionnaires; analysis of the retrospective verbal protocols about these tasks. The results indicate that the traditional media still presents advantages against the digital media due to limitations on the state of the art of hardware and software and on the lack of understanding and well handling of the computer by the architects. Some advantages related to the use of traditional media were: it furnishes the architect with more comprehensive perception regarding the relationships between visual, spatial and organizational aspects of the design process, whilst stimulating the production of several alternative solutions, avoiding, therefore, premature crystallizations of design solutions, and a more comprehensive understanding of the design tasks. summary Digital mediation is considered to facilitate architect-user understanding, in order to enlarging the communicative competition, causing an involved attitude in the receptor. This paper proposes the study and analysis of the new communicative situation with the purpose of evaluate the impact of digital mediation in the understanding between producer and user. The investigation is focused as a comprehensive qualitative study. The process begins when the receptor contacts to media and then, it is able to observe attitudes and communicative competitions that play in the relationship. Variables involved in defi nition of digital mediation are: content, consumption ways, structures, digital image and alternative means. Observable attitudes of the receiver are organized in three categories: cognition, perceptive and emotive. Functional methodological tools are hoped to be found in order to evaluate the reach and infl uence of DM in the producer-user communication.

summary This paper is a study of an ongoing housing project in Brussels (SMH) which involves bottom-up spatial occupation and 'making' by activists, activist architects, social workers and citizens. The particular focus of this paper is on the critical spatial agency of the citizens, activist-architects and artefacts for enabling architectural design justice (ADJ) in the SMH. Building on the Actor-Network Theory of Latour (2005) we developed an analytic method called Actor Link Mapping and Analysis (ALMA) which involves data collection from a wide range of network actors, the generation of a variety of digital network maps, making computational analysis, followed by workshops and interviews to discuss the findings. ALMA was used to recognize potential assets which are essential for design justice practices and networks. The analysis revealed the limits to community control of design processes and practices as well as limits to the conceptual links surrounding socio-spatial equality, thus limits to design justice in the SMH project. Our research also revealed a plethora of new roles and agencies in bottom-up housing production which were essential to understanding the dynamics and power distribution among the different actors.

summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. summary This paper reviews empirical studies in product modeling and issues of CAAD, and then proposes a new way of thinking in object modeling for abstract design concepts – by using stairs as the subject of study because of its systematic nature and wide variety of forms. This object model works in the higher level over existing product models and deals with abstract concept only. It provides a mean for capturing design concepts and knowledge. Most stair generator in CAAD are only capable of making regular stairs, let alone those fascinating free-form stairs. The purpose of this research is to find a higher conceptual structure of stairs by the object modeling method, so virtually all types of stairs can be described and modeled. Therefore conceptual design in CAAD would be possible and useful for designers. A prototype on AutoCAD will be implemented to demonstrate how the conceptual structure works.

summary The use of digital technology in architecture has proven to be more assertive than originally thought: it has reconditioned the nature of the design process, and established new processes and techniques of fabrication. Recent applications in digital technology show inquisitiveness in the contentious subject Genetic Algorithms. This new architectural process is characterized by two main shifts: from poiesis (or poetry) to autopoiesis, and from authenticity to mimesis. Since evolutionary simulations give rise to new forms rather than design them, architects should now be both artists and operators of both Inventive and Systematic design. Inventive design: The digital media should bring about poiesis (poetry). Digital spaces reveal and visualize the unconscious desires of urban spaces, bringing forth new dreamscapes, mysterious and surreal. This implies a Freudian spatial unconscious, which can be subjected to analysis and interpretation. The tools of digital dreaming, meanwhile, have opened a window to the ‘urban unconscious’. Systematic Design: Digital media should bring about an autopoiesis. This approach calls into question traditional methods of architectural design that replace the hierarchical processes of production known as “cause and effect,” and propose a design process where the architect becomes a constructor of formal systems. Will the evolutionary simulation replace design? Is metric space dead? The new algorithmic evolutionary conditions give architecture an autopoiesis, similar to biological dynamics. Paradoxically, the new emerging process is more insightful. The emphasis of the exploration is on morphological complexity. Architecture, through “machine” fabrication, may become more responsive, rigorous and poetic.

summary In this paper, we present a theoretical study on automated understanding of the design drawing. This can lead to design support through the natural interface of sketching. In earlier work, 24 plan-based conventions of depiction have been identified, such as grid, zone, axial system, contour, and element vocabulary. These are termed graphic units. Graphic units form a good basis for recognition of drawings as they combine shape with meaning. We present some of the theoretical questions that have to be resolved before an implementation can be made. The contribution of this paper is: (i) identification of domain knowledge which is necessary for recognition; (ii) outlining combined strategy of multi-agent systems and online recognition; (iii) functional structure for agents and their organisation to converge on sketch recognition.

summary In this paper we outline a strategy of structured reflection to improve reflection by students in a course on the implication of CAAD, design theory, and design methodology. Earlier editions of the course showed that students often did not evolve their learning beyond a checklist level. Reflection is an important mechanism to improve learning from design situations. After a consideration of the main approaches to design reflection, we take up Schön’s notion of reflection and provide support for structured reflection in CAAD education, based on earlier experiences with structured question lists in a civil engineering course. Findings after the first year’s run show a deeper level of reflection on a more elaborate level.

summary Design has been described as making inspire decisions with incomplete information. True, we may use prior knowledge, we may even think we understand the causalites involved, but what really matters is exploration: of new forms, of new materials, and speculation about the response to the resulting effects. Essentially, this exploration has its own dynamics, involving intuition and spontaneity, and without which there is no design. But of course we all know that this is not the whole story. Design is different to 'craft'; to directly 'making' or 'doing'. It necessarily has to be predictive in order to anticipate what the consequence of the 'making' or 'doing' will be. Therefore we inevitably have to counter balance our intuition with a well developed sense of premeditation. We have to be able to reason about future events, about the consequence of something that has not yet being made. There is always going to be an advantage if this reasoning can be achieved with a degree of precision. So how can we progress from intuition to precision? What abstractions can we use to represent, externalize and test the concepts involved? How can we augment the cognitive processes? How can we record the progression of ideas? And, how do we know when we have arrived? Design has a symbiotic relationship with geometry. There are many design issues that are independent of any specific configurations. We might call these “pre-geometric” issues. And having arrived at a particular configuration, there may be many material interpretations of the same geometry. We might call these “post-geometric” issues. But geometry is central to design, and without appropriate geometric understanding, the resulting design will be limited. Geometry has two distinct components, one is a formal descriptive system and the other is a process of subjective evaluation.

summary Paradoxically, one of the most difficult but enjoyable things we do is to imagine. To open the eyes of our mind and see what no one else can see. We see images of things that are yet to be and through the same skill we devise ways in which to make them happen. We design the future in the form of environments, graphics, products, films, and a growing range of new media. Our ability to develop a vision and to visualize it is a gift that we are called to cultivate and put to good use. We have been privileged with a great responsibility. In the process of developing a vision and communicating that vision to others, we “visualize”. Visualization can be a very private experience in which we are alone with mental images that help us shape our vision. In other instances visualization can be a component of mass communication. Visualization can be a means or can be an end. It can be a small architectural sketch on a paper napkin or a mega-graphic covering a high-rise building, an airplane or a ship. In every case, the relationship between vision and visualization is a mutually supportive articulation of what our eyes and our minds can see. Our vision of the role of computers in the art and science of visualization is in constant development. Computer visualization can support an intimate dialog between a designer and his/her vision. It can translate and communicate that vision to a larger audience and in the hands of a new-media artist it can actually constitute his/her vision. The 9th Annual Conference of SIGraDI (Ibero American Society for Computer Graphics) will explore our collective vision on the future of digital visualization and digital media in Environmental Design, Product Design, Graphic Design, Cinematography, New Media, and Art. Authors are invited to share their research work with a focus on how it contributes to shape a collective understanding of the past, awareness of the present, and vision of the future in our multiple disciplines.

summary In this paper, two problems concerning truthfulness of computer-generated visualization are considered. The first one concerns relationships between reality and its representation by computer renderings. The second problem concerns the kind of representations people need. These problems are analyzed for static perception of architectural forms based on computer visualization, and for dynamic walk-through perception of urban space. The thesis of the paper is that many photorealistic renderings are excessively realistic and thus not true. In this context, a new question arises: do we need the true representation of an object? The author claims that we need “adequate” pictures. Adequate means a picture that is satisfactory in particular situation. The problem of equivalence of media (renderings and animations) and reality is not that important here. Much research is concerned with the truthfulness and falsity of information. However, they do not take into consideration that frequently what seems to be real exerts bigger influence on people than what is in fact real. Understanding this problem may help us in producing images that better correspond to people’s expectations.

summary The paper discusses the principles of using internet nested “Citizen” system that composes the platform to exchange information between different participants of planning procedure. As a part of P.R.S. method instrumentation, “Citizen” allows multidirectional interaction of planners, authorities and users of space. The paper shows various aspects of system structure, pointing out the most significant application abilities, the role different contents of the system play and services they provide to participants. The article summarizes the results of application, discusses the impact, web-based social participation has on efficiency of planning procedure, elimination of conflicts and understanding of planning problematics.
