title Context Aware Paper-Based Review Instrument A Tangible User Interface for Architecture Design Review
source Synthetic Landscapes [Proceedings of the 25th Annual Conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture] pp. 317-327
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2006.317
summary We describe the design and implementation of a prototype computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW) environment for review of architectural construction documents. This environment utilizes a novel plain-paper tangible interface that supports shared activity such as review of construction documents using an “over the shoulder” computational assistant called CAPRI.Despite the increasing use of computers, work in most architecture firms still largely revolves around paper drawings. Architects structure their work around paper instead of digital representations for reasons of legal liability and tradition, as well as technical limitations. While hardcopy is intuitive, dense, and easy to access, it lacks direct connection to the wide range of design knowledge increasingly available in interactive design environments. This lack is felt most acutely during design review processes, when the designer or reviewer is often called upon to consult and consider holistically a variety of supporting (backing) documents, a task which requires focused attention and a good memory, if errors are to be avoided. Our prototype system enables multiple reviewers to interact equally with a paper construction document using a tangible interface to query detail and backing data from a project knowledge base. We believe this will decrease the reviewer’s cognitive load by bringing design data to them in a contextual and timely way. In doing so, we believe errors will be caught sooner and mistakes reduced.

summary In 1990, due to the traditional architecture design and construction method difficult to build the complicated and non-geometry free-form Fish Structure in Barcelona, architect Frank Gehry started learn from the field of aerospace to utilize CAD/CAM technology in design and manufacture process. He created the free-form fish model in CAD system and exported the digital CAD model data to CAM machine (RP and CNC) to fabricate the design components, and finally assembled on the site. Gehry pioneered in the new digital design process in using CAD/CAM technology or so-called digital fabrication. It becomes an important issue recently as the CAD/CAM technology progressively act as the new digital design media in architectural design and construction process (Ryder et al., 2002; Kolarevic, 2003). Furthermore, in the field of architecture professional, some commercial computer systems had been developed on purpose of standardizes the digital design process in using CAD/CAM fabrication such as Gehry Technologies formed by Gehry Partners; SmartGeometry Group in Europe and Objectile proposed by Bernard Cache. Researchers in the research field like Mark Burry, Larry Sass, Branko Kolarevic, Schodek and others are enthusiastic about the exploration of the role of CAD/CAM fabrication as new design media in design process (Burry, 2002; Schodek et al., 2005; Lee, 2005).

title The Augmented Marketplace - Voices, robots and tricksters
source Communicating Space(s) [24th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-5-9] Volos (Greece) 6-9 September 2006, pp. i-ix

summary To advance the theme of communicating spaces we report on a case study of a market precinct known as the Barras, about one mile from the centre of the city of Glasgow and relate this to our investigation into intelligent environments. In the latter case we deploy Lego MindstormsTM RCX robot processing to explore interactions between a mobile sensing robot and simple environmental controls: movements of sliding screens in response to an autonomous mobile sensor. We speculate on the application of these techniques to augment physical marketplaces. We extend the lessons from these studies to a consideration of multiple modalities in sensory experience, multi-agent systems, and the use of sound, the human voice and repetition for defining and augmenting spaces.

title REPRESENTATION TECHNIQUE FOR STRUCTURE AND PROCESS OF 3D CONSTRUCTION MODEL
source CAADRIA 2006 [Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia] Kumamoto (Japan) March 30th - April 2nd 2006, 593-595

summary With the recent developments in computer technology studies on how to digitally restore traditional buildings to their original state are being pursued. It is highly important that the public can be educated by digitally restoring these buildings online and/or offline. However, it is necessary to develop several techniques to understand a structural order and construction process in traditional buildings. We propose new techniques that we can better understand them and fit them into society in the education and the publicity.

title The Art of Communication: a Collaborative Decision-Making System among Different Industrial Design Stakeholders - The case of the company ASUS
source Van Leeuwen, J.P. and H.J.P. Timmermans (eds.) 2006, Progress in Design & Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning, Eindhoven: Eindhoven University of Technology, ISBN-10: 90-386-1756-9, ISBN-13: 978-90-386-1756-5, p. 271-288
summary Collaboration benefits the process of complex design. However, there are many communication problems among different stakeholders in the domain of industrial design, because the situation of communication and decision-makings for stakeholders is so complicated. To deal with the complexity requires both a web-based collaborative system to communicate and share information immediately, and a multi-agent system (MAS) integrated with KW architecture to possess different levels of competence at performing a particular task. The goal of our system is to integrate a variety of representational methods of transferring knowledge and to communicate among different stakeholders using a single platform. To demonstrate our proposed concepts, we focus on a prototype system for notebook design for the company ASUS, a leading notebook manufacturer based in Taiwan.

title iSphere:A free-hand 3D modeling interface
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 4 - no. 1, 19-31
summary Making 3D models should be an easy and intuitive task like free-hand sketching. This paper presents iSphere, a 24 degree of freedom 3D input device. iSphere is a dodecahedron embedded with 12 capacitive sensors for pulling-out and pressing-in manipulation on 12 control points of 3D geometries. It exhibits a conceptual 3D modeling approach for saving mental loads of low-level commands. Using analog inputs of 3D manipulation, designers are able to have high-level modeling concepts like pushing or pulling 3D surfaces. Our experiment shows that iSphere saved steps in the selection of control points in the review of menus and leading to a clearer focus on what to build instead of how to build it. Novices saved significant time learning 3D manipulation by using iSphere to making conceptual models. However, one tradeoff of the iSphere is its lack of fidelity in its analog input mechanism.

title eCAADe: An Educational Commendation Mechanism for the Adaptive Semantic Web to Use in the Architectural Design Environment
source Communicating Space(s) [24th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-5-9] Volos (Greece) 6-9 September 2006, pp. 244-251

summary The “Case Studies in Architecture” phase of a course in architectural design includes in-depth comparisons and analyses of architectural precedents. However, with the large number of cases now readily available, Web searching and navigation is a time-consuming, low precision activity. In the work described in this paper, we built eCAADe, an educational commendation system for the adaptive semantic Web to allow students to query and retrieve semantically for architectural cases during the case study phase of an architectural design process. In our suggested system, we built a Semantic Web for design knowledge representation to make query and retrieval efficient. We also applied a hybrid recommendation mechanism, which is combining both content-based filtering and collaborative filtering to help for students to find relevant cases more efficient and precise with their preferences. We illustrate our concepts with several concrete examples.

title Form, Style and Function - A Constraint-Based Generative System for Apartment Façade Design
source Communicating Space(s) [24th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9541183-5-9] Volos (Greece) 6-9 September 2006, pp. 874-883
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2006.874
summary This paper describes the development of a constraint-based generative system (FSF system) to support the design of middle and high-rise apartment façades from architectural plans. Floor plan and façade designs are heavily interrelated, and, sometimes, the plan constrains the façade design during the design process. This relationship lends itself to apply constraint-based systems and we have designed the system to connect intelligently between apartment plan and façade. In our system, we define constraints into three categories: structural form, architectural style and function. We use genetic algorithm to generate plausible alternatives quickly and augmented by a constraint-based system, façades can be generated and modified much more easily in terms of real-time visual feedback for checking violence of the constraints and of dealing with updates smoothly through intelligent connecting plans to façades.

title HOUSE SENSE: Designing smart houses with intelligent interface design
source CAADRIA 2006 [Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia] Kumamoto (Japan) March 30th - April 2nd 2006, 313-322
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2006.x.s1v
summary The research and development of smart houses are emergent because of the information and communication technological development and the search for better living quality from occupants. This paper therefore explores how smart technologies are applied into smart houses within the living context. Through a pilot study of cases and technological innovations to address the new living context by technology-interface-design strategies, a development framework of smart house is formed by three major elements, i.e. smart materials, technologies, and design. In order to actualize house senses, the prototype for smart houses is evolved. When space and wireless smart components are integrated, the living environment becomes more flexible and adaptable to accommodate or support activities digitally, and users can interact with space via context aware computing for acquiring and assimilating information in order to enhance their living experience.

title THE DEVELOPMENT OF A TACTILE MODELING INTERFACE
source CAADRIA 2006 [Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia] Kumamoto (Japan) March 30th - April 2nd 2006, 573-575
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2006.x.o8n
summary Recently, more and more researchers dedicated in the development of human computer interaction for CAD systems, such as gestural input of three dimensional coordinates (Lee, Hu, and Selker, 2005), flexible manipulation of NURBS objects (Cohen, Markosian, Zeleznik, Hughes, and Barzel, 1999; Emmerik, 1990), and the creation of force feedback (Wu, 2003). These research results indicated that the more intuitive control the device can provide in modeling process, the more creative solutions can be generated (Lee, Hu, and Selker, 2005; Schweikardt and Gross, 2000; Wu, 2003).

title I3-Eye-Cube: interactive intuitive mixed reality interface for virtual architecture
source Computing in Architecture / Re-Thinking the Discourse: The Second International Conference of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2006), 25-27 April 2006, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
summary This paper introduces a new tangible interface for navigating through immersive virtual Architecture. It replaces the common mouse or glove with a set of tangible cubes. It includes physical architectural floor plans as contextual haptic constraints for the cubes to ensure better object manipulation compared to free space. The position and orientation of the cubes relative to the floor plan is tracked by web cameras and a newly developed program translates this into the 6-dof of the virtual camera generating a 3D view for the immersive projection of virtual architecture. This easy to use tangible interface mixes common 2D dimensional (real) with 3D immersive representation (virtual) of Architecture to overcome the problem of ‘Getting lost in Cyberspace’.

title A Design System Integrating TRIZ Method and Case-Based Reasoning Approach
source Van Leeuwen, J.P. and H.J.P. Timmermans (eds.) 2006, Progress in Design & Decision Support Systems in Architecture and Urban Planning, Eindhoven: Eindhoven University of Technology, ISBN-10: 90-386-1756-9, ISBN-13: 978-90-386-1756-5, p. 387-402
summary Today's industrials are facing numerous product development challenges and pressures as a result of an increasingly competitive market. It creates an enormous need for a constantly growing supply of new ideas and solutions. The computer support used by designers still lacks the ability to use experiential knowledge in a rational way. Therefore, pursuit of designer is utilizing innovative design methods and problem-solving approaches to systematically simplify design problem, and hence accelerate the design process. This paper proposed to integrate TRIZ method into CBR process and aims at exploring the possibility to use TRIZ method as a complement to enhance performance of CBR in product design. Wall lighting design problem is used as example, and an interactive CBR system is not only built to provide designers a computational tool to efficiently retrieve usefulness design cases but also assist designers systematically in finding creative ideas.
