summary	The emergence of digital alongside analog design media has created an interest in how the two intersect and differ. A traditional paper drawing can possess qualities of originality, authorship, and continuity of expression that may be lacking in a digitally produced drawing. Audio aficionados hold onto their collection of vinyl records based upon qualities of sound that they perceive. A manually created drawing by a grand master will be valued typically over a digital drawing in which a copy is of equal quality to the original. This paper explores distinctions between analog and digital media, explaining the creative opportunities and critical issues that emerge with the hybrid combinations that have become commonplace within the design studio. Three instructors from separate schools of design survey in-practice uses, and offer a common perspective on a topic that has created uncertainty over the place and use of design media.

title	Dissemination of knowledge in architectural endoscopy

summary	The first EAEA conference was hosted 1993 in Tampere (Finland) and subsequently a further six conferences have taken place. Future conferences are already pre-scheduled and a steadily rising number of papers has been written. So far, the conference proceedings have been published in a paperbased format and, as these were published in small numbers, it is rather hard to take stock of preceding entries. However, the published proceedings can be regarded as capital for the EAEA-Association and it is both necessary and worthwhile to preserve this collective memory by means of an archived e-collection. At the time of the formation of the EAEA, electronic publishing was not yet widely used. Since then, computerbased infrastructure and related (web-based) software tools have become widely available. There is even an ongoing debate within the associations dedicated to electronic publishing, as to whether conference proceedings should be solely distributed in a digital format. Doubtless, a discussion towards the value of electronic publication output in the framework of research assessments etc. would be a step too far for this paper. Still, a dual strategy for the EAEA could be aiming at the production of a limited number of paperbased copies, which would mainly be distributed to the conference participants (and the remaining part being made available resp. free library copies to make this output more visible). However, the high commercial interest derived by financial revenues is not given and dissemination by digital means is far more in the interest of both the participants and the EAEA-association. Today, the creation of an electronic version of the conference proceedings costs very little extra. In both cases (analogue and digital) the materials should not only be “deposited” on the desktop of individuals, but also be capable of reaching more public destinations. As the conference host is changing biennially, it has to be confirmed that the hosting institution will handle the delivery of metadata. Local printing houses arrange the printing work, and no further interests (concerning copyright, revenues etc) from the side of publishing houses are in charge. The import of the provided metadata is supported by way of self-organisation on a shoestring budget, as it does not require extensive work if properly defined. This means that minimal effort is needed to make the material available and to achieve a certain level of sustainability.

summary	The work presented here discusses an ongoing research in constructing a knowledge representation system founded on CAAD document repositories and investigating the network of concepts constructed by CAAD research. The approach does not rely on conceptual models or theories about CAAD research, rather a formal semantics amenable to decidable reasoning on the corpus of research in CAAD. A web-based demonstration application is illustrated in the paper in which we discuss two propositions about CAAD research discovered in the process of our investigations.

summary	The building materials that help designers or architects achieve their goal of defining and enclosing space are usually concrete, steel, glass or wood. For these materials designers have both empirical data gained from experience and at times complex calculation methods enabling them to use them in their designs in a tangible, reckonable and, consequently, almost risk-free manner. It seems obvious that creating a design with well-known building materials will lead to more or less predictable outcomes. This is a good reason for investigating a design process dealing with air-filled building-elements. Architectural structures look completely different when one employs a “building material” which has not been subjected to either detailed investigations or sophisticated calculations. The “Smart_Air” Design Studio was devised to take a closer look at the unusual building material “air,” which we have only just begun to explore, and to make it the centre of a focused design exercise. The objective was to use “air” or, rather, pneumatic technologies, to arrive at structurally sound solutions for enclosing space, which could be considered a “roof” in the widest sense of the term.

summary	Although we teach BIM since 2006 at the Faculty of architecture at Czech Technical University in Prague, the education has never been fully integrated into the curriculum of the school. In 2013/2014 this changed, and three tracks were initialized to integrate BIM: (1) teaching BIM in the first year; (2) applying BIM in a selected first year design studio; and (3) applying BIM in a selected third year Bachelor graduation design studio. The implementation of the work is described, results are presented, and we draw conclusions for future work.
