summary The paper presents ongoing research focusing on the development of digital tools and methodologies for spatial design based on non-Euclidean geometries. It addresses the way sound can be used both conceptually and acoustically in the early stages of the design process, examining digital architectural design and modeling based on three-dimensional sound visualization and the acoustical analysis and evaluation of complex curved surface geometry. The paper describes SoundMatrix, the first part of a digital design tool created by using Max/Msp/Jitter, to assist in the preliminary design of building façades in small-scale urban environments, specifically studying the possibilities of curvature to decrease sound reflection between opposing street façades. Examples from a workshop with the SoundMatrix application illustrate the real-time 3D authoring and sound spatialisation processing currently implemented in the tool.

summary The purpose of this paper is to present the characteristics of laser scanning technology, based on two examples for the modeling at the reconstruction of the Golgotha site in Jerusalem and the ancient Stoa of Eumenes II, located at the South Slope of the Athens Acropolis. Terrestrial 3D laser scanning is a new methodology for three dimensional object modeling. Especially, the reconstruction of the ancient Stoa of Eumenes II comprises one of the most important restoration programs of the Greek Ministry of Culture. This paper will focus on the main steps of the laser scanning processing chain, starting from the acquisition of the data and ending with the evaluation of the 3D models.

summary In this investigation we are concerned with rethinking and proposing the concept of space towards an enhanced interactive place where our spatial surroundings are no longer understood as fixed but as living organisms that adapt to our inter-actions inside of them. It is the aim of the research to show a space created by the interaction of the users with the building rather than the one generated by the personal interpretation of the designer. A place co-created by its inhabitant in real-time through a virtual prototype. Hereby, we are interested to investigate human-computer interactions inside of game engines as a morphogenetic process for potential architectural design and space conception. This research not only underlines theoretical concepts of architecture and folding as a spatio-structural diagrams that generate emergent processes in architecture design, but also proposes the creation and further development of a prototype based on these potentials that computer games and multimedia have brought to experiment and determine architectural environments. With the potentials of 3D Real-Time engines as design environments for the co-development of user driven spaces and folding as a design formation attitude we aim to determine space within the experience of a space prototype.

title A Constraint-Based Building Bulk Design Support

summary We introduce an architecture practice-oriented implementation strategy of constraint-based methods called BDS (Building Bulk Design Support) to supporting bulk analysis during the architectural programming phase. We examine the optmization problem of site coverage and building massing according to a set of standard planning and zoning regulations, and try a problem solving approach based on the paradigm of constraint satisfaction problems. The case study, which is focused on the paticipatory planning of very low-income dwellings within the Latin American context, serves as testbed for a prototypical application of the adopted methodology. The BDS constitutes a novel approach on computer-aided bulk analysis, regarding this particularly relevant context of application. In the case of participatively planned low-income housing projects, efficiency regarding time and cost of planning directly affects dwellers’ quality of life, whereas elementary programming tasks such as bulk analysis lack appropriate state-of-the-art technological support. Traditional architectural planning methods demand a large domain-specific knowledge base and skillful planners. A planning process, which is mainly driven by the formulation of planning-relevant constraints and sets of solution alternatives, suggests to avoid architects’ traditional procedure of: 1. Create an (yet not necessarily valid) instance of the eventual design solution by directly choosing specific values for its shape parameters. 2. Evaluate its validity by confronting the designed model to a set of applicable constraints, which have to be satisfied. Instead, the constraint-based design methodology poses a search procedure that operates in a space of pertinent constraint sets. A computer-aided interactive search procedure to find more valid design solution alternatives in less time and with less effort is particularly qualified to supply efficient support for participatory planning activities carried out between dwellers and planners. The set of solutions for a building-bulk design problem is constrained by both a large complex system of planning and zoning regulations and the geometry of the eventual design solution itself. Given a considerable amount of such regulations, a regular size geometric constraint satisfaction system proved to be capable of providing a highly efficient, interactive modeling and evaluation tool for the formulation in real time of valid solution alternatives for an ordinary building-bulk design problem. A BDS implementation will constitute one system module of a larger integrated system model called Esther. A BDS tool shall interact with other functional modules, like e.g. the FLS (Floor plan Layout Support), which also uses constraint-based design methods.

summary The current notion of space seems to be inappropriate to deal with contemporary and future CAAD applications because it lacks of user and social values. Instead of using a general term called 'space', our approach is to consider the common unit in architectural design process as a place composed of space, user and activity information. Our research focuses on developing a novel intelligent building data model carrying the essence of place. Through our research, the needs of using virtual architectural models among various architectural applications are investigated at first step. Second, key characteristics of spatial information are summarized and systematically classified. The third step is to construct a semantically-rich building data model based on structured floor plan and the semantic location modeling. Then intermediate functions are created providing an interface between the model and future applications. Finally, a prototype system, PlaceMaker, is developed to demonstrate how to apply our building data model to construct virtual architectural models embodying the essences of place.

summary Computer animation is based on software that is optimized to show transformation or change. For the animator, such change may represent the movement of people, objects or light, or a series of events comprising a short story. Studying change is also a designer’s interest in objects made to transform or respond to varied environmental or phenomenal conditions. In addition, the study of change can be focused on the process of design itself, a series of steps taken in the making of a geometrical model for a building project. In this last sense of change, animation technology offers a means to retain and rework the distinct history of how one “upstream” or early design decision impacts the evolution of a design as it is refined “downstream”. Moreover, when customized through a macro program, animation technology can more easily allow for early “upstream” design decisions to be revisited and modified with minimal disruption to “downstream” moves that had initially followed. That is, a designer can revise a geometrical modeling decision made at an earlier moment in a design process without having to completely redo other dependent changes to the model that had previously followed that moment. This paper reports on how animation software, rather than more typical CAD software, was harnessed to facilitate a design studio Macro programming an animation system exploited its core technology to provide access to a more process based approach to modeling.

summary This paper presents the results of a digital architectural studio based on the surrealist game Le Cadavre Exquis in which one person began a narrative and others transformed it. Participants played with computer modeling looking at the growth of a story (building form, qualities, colors, etc.) examining how stories are built collectively from individual episodes and how stories translate in the telling or final construct. The project ended in a composition (vertical, horizontal, along a string, or any other way of stringing elements) with tellings and retellings, a network of routes from one beginning to many possible endings.

summary Rapid prototyping (RP) techniques are widely used within the design/manufacturing industry and are well established in manufacturing industry. These digital techniques offer quick and accurate prototypes with relatively low cost when we require exact likeness to a particular scale and detail. 3D modeling of buildings on CAD-systems in the AEC sector is now becoming more popular and becoming widely used practice as the higher efficiency of working with computers is being recognized. However the building of scaled physical representations is still performed manually, which generally requires a high amount of time. Complex post-modernist building forms are more faithfully and easily represented in a solid visualization form, than they could be using traditional model making methods. Using RP within the engineering community has given the users the possibility to communicate and visualize designs with greater ease with the clients and capture any error within the CAD design at an early stage of the project or product lifecycle. In this paper, the application of RP in architecture is reviewed and the possibilities of modeling architectural models are explored. A methodology of developing rapid prototypes with 3D CAD models using methods of solid freeform manufacturing in particular Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is presented and compared against traditional model making methods. An economical analysis is presented and discussed using a case study and the potential of applying RP techniques to architectural models is discussed.

summary This paper provides evidence on the level of media richness that may be cost effective in the development of e-learning tutorials for teaching and learning computer visualization techniques. For such a purpose the author provides an analysis of low-cost / high-impact media rich products, the effort and cost required in their development and the measurement of related learning outcomes. Circa twenty years of R&D of multimedia and hypermedia applications for instruction have demonstrated the benefits of communicating relevant information to learners using engaging media. Based on this evidence, this paper assumes that due to the cognitive style of design students, the instructional packages for learning computer techniques for design visualization that are rich in media content, tend to be more effective. Available visualization technologies make the development of e-learning tutorials feasible and apparently the logical way to implement our instructional packages. However the question in the development of e-learning tutorials becomes a more strategic one when we are called to reach a level of optimization between producing a package with a basic standard, namely; text & still-graphic based tutorials, or a state-of-the-art package that is based on video demonstrations (more than enough?) that can accommodate the students’ learning requirements and also our production costs. The costs include the human resources (instructor, producers, assistants and others) and the material resources (hardware and software, copies, and others) involved in the creation of the e-learning tutorials. The key question is: What is good enough, and what is clearly superfluous? In order to confirm our hypothesis and propose a relevant balance between media richness and learning effectiveness, this paper describes an experiment in the use of two different levels of media richness as used to deliver instructions on the production of computer animations for design visualization. The students recruited for this experiment were fairly familiarized with the use of 3D modeling concepts and software, but had no previous knowledge of the techniques included in the tutorials; in specific; camera animation procedures. The students, separated in two groups, used one of the two methods; then they proceeded to apply their newly acquired skills in the production of an animation without using the help of any external means. The assessment of results was based on the quality of the final product and the students’ performance in the recall of the production procedures. Finally an interview with the students was conducted on their perception of what was accomplished from a metacognitive point of view. The results were processed in order to establish comparisons between the different levels of achievement and the students’ metacognitive assessment of learning. These results have helped us to create a clear set of recommendations for the production of e-learning tutorials and their conditions for implementation. The most beneficial characteristics of the two tested methods in relation to type of information, choice of media, method of information delivery, flexibility of production/editorial tools,! and overall cost of production, will be transferred into the development of a more refined product to be tested at larger scale.

summary Context awareness is important for human senses of places as well as human computer interaction. The aim of this research paper is focusing on controlling the user's privacy in a smart space which is adaptive to different users for enhancing the user's awareness in his diary life. In Environmental Psychology, the definition of privacy is that an individual has the control of deciding what information of himself is released to others, and under how he interact with others. (Westin 1970) And privacy is categorized as the linguistic privacy and visual privacy. (Sundstorm 1986). Solutions for privacy control: Plan Layout, Vision Boundary, Access Control and Architecture Metaphor - the transmission of information is not ascertainable for every single user. Although information are shown in public, but information is implied by cues and symbols. Only a certain user or a group of users have access to the full context of information. The methodology is to form an analytic framework to study the relationship between information, user and activities by using the computational supports derived from KitchenSense, ConceptNet, Python, 3d Studio Max and Flash; and to record patterns built up by users' behaviour and actions. Furthermore, the scenario-based simulation can envision the real world conditions by adding interfaces for enhancing user awareness.

summary The paper describes a novel approach involving interoperability, data modeling technology, and application of the building information model (BIM) focused on sustainable architecture. They share relationships and multiple experiences that have existed for years but have never have been proven. This interoperability of building performance simulation maps building information and parametric models with energy simulation models, establishing a seamless link between Computer Aided Design (CAD) and energy performance simulation software. During the last four decades, building designers have utilized information and communication technologies to create environmental representations to communicate spatial concepts or designs and to enhance spaces. Most architectural firms still rely on hand labor, drafted drawings, construction documents, specifications, schedules and work plans in traditional means. 3D modeling has been used primarily as a rendering tool, not as the actual representation of the project.With this innovative digitally exchange technology, architects and building designers can visually analyze dynamic building energy performance in response to changes of climate and building parameters. This software interoperability provides full data exchange bidirectional capabilities, which significantly reduces time and effort in energy simulation and data regeneration. Data mapping and exchange are key requirements for building more powerful energy simulations. An effective data model is the bidirectional nucleus of a well-designed relational database, critical in making good choices in selecting design parameters and in gaining and expanding a comprehensive understanding of existing data flows throughout the simulation process, making data systems for simulation more powerful, which has never been done before. Despite the variety of energy simulation applications in the lifecycle of building design and construction projects, there is a need for a system of data integration to allow seamless sharing and bidirectional reuse of data.

summary This paper should be seen as complementary to the other papers by Mullins et al where the EU VIPA project is described. It is the intention of this paper to deal solely with the educational aspects of using computers in architectural education, which of course is the raison d’etre of both ECAADE and the VIPA project, but on this occasion to look at the earliest models of this, to revisit the pioneers in case we have forgotten something and to see in what way their original aims were achieved and how their self proclaimed task can be transferred into the current situation. It is the intention of this paper to argue that Papert and Kay’s use of the computer in education still has many useful things to say in the context of vipa. The general approach is fundamental to the VIPA project and will inform the ongoing design of the scripting and modelling platform, based on Smalltalk / Open Croquet, and Blender / Python.

The hubs transmit the model's topology and geometry to the computer, where the model is rendered on the screen in real time. summary In architectural design, explorations using digital modeling and rendering tools do not stop at producing 3D geometries and representations. We need to interrogate the spatial implications of the functions these tools provide. One of the questions we need to ask is, is it possible to foreground architectural concepts “within” the mechanisms of these tools? This study focuses on one single function in 3D VIZ camera movement. The objective is to examine the spatial implications of this function in the computerized architectural space of Diamond Museum. Camera movement is studied in six variables: distance, point of view, camera angle, framing, duration and travel speed and sequencing. Further, the architectural concept of flatness will be understood through the movies generated within the space of Diamond Museum.

summary This paper describes a procedure that feeds remotely a modelling system with geographical coordinates and the relative measurements taken in place in order to model dynamically new entities in real-time. The operation of this system is based on methodologies that are commonly used in telegeoprocessing – telegeomonitoring systems and its purpose is to simulate in real-time an existing environment using the captured measurements. The direct input of geographic data to the proposed system, which is adapted to a modelling environment (CAD or GIS), triggers the creation of new 3D entities in real-time (points, linear or area features), as it could be done with a traditional tablet digitizer. Simultaneously, the proposed system represents thematically the properties of the modelling entities (according to the measured values) over a 3D mesh. The aim of the suggested system is the remote registration of additional spatial information, their adequate treatment and adjustment via special developed interfaces, including their representation via developed software which is applied in the AutoCAD environment because of its programming development support and its use by a variety of engineers.

summary The research paper exemplifies a novel information integrated design technique developed at ONL (Oosterhuis and Lenard), Netherlands, specifically appropriated for envisaging complex geometric forms. The ‘informed design technique’, apart from being highly instrumental in conceptualizing and generating the geometric component constituting architectural form in a parametric manner, is also efficiently utilized for precise computer aided manufacturing and construction of the speculated form. Geometric complexities inherent in contemporary architectural constructs and the time spent in appropriation of such topologies, fueled the ‘informed design’ approach, which caters to issues of timely construction, precision oriented design and production (visual and material) and parametric modeling attuned to budgetary fluctuations. This design-research approach has been tested and deployed by ONL, for conceiving ‘the Acoustic Barrier’ project, Utrecht Leidsche Rijn in the Netherlands and is treated as a generic case for exemplifying the ‘informed design’ technique in this research paper. The design methodology encourages visualizing architectural substantiations from a systems perspective and envisages upon a rule based adaptive systems approach involving extrapolation of contextual dynamics/ground data in terms of logical ‘rules’. These rules/conditionalities form the basis for spawning parametric logistics to be mapped upon geometric counterparts exemplifying the conception. The simulated parametric relations bind dimensional aspects (length, width, height etc.) of the geometric construct in a relational manner, eventually culminating in a 3D spatial envelope. This evolved envelope is subsequently intersected with a ‘parametric spatio-constructive grid’, creating specific intersecting points between the two. The hence extorted ‘point cloud’ configuration serves as a generic information field concerning highly specific coordinates, parameters and values for each individual point/constructive node it embodies. The relations between these points are directly linked with precise displacements of structural profiles and related scaling factors of cladding materials. Parallel to this object oriented modeling approach, a detailed database (soft/information component) is also maintained to administer the relations between the obtained points. To be able to derive constructible structural and cladding components from the point cloud configuration customized Scripts (combination of Lisp and Max scripts) process the point cloud database. The programmed script-routines, iteratively run calculations to generate steel-wire frames, steel lattice-structure and cladding panels along with their dimensions and execution drawing data. Optimization-routines are also programmed to make rectifications and small adjustments in the calculated data. This precise information is further communicated with CNC milling machines to manifest complex sectional profiles formulating the construct hence enabling timely and effective construction of the conceptualized form.

summary In next-generation networking environments, ubiquitous networks will be available both indoors and outdoors. Various devices will be ubiquitously embedded in the surrounding environment, such as buildings and urban spaces. We will be able to browse digital contents on ubiquitous networks anywhere and at anytime. In our research, we have proposed several content-processing mechanisms for use in environment-enabled collaborative acquisition of embedded digital content in the real world situations. We have developed a network management device that makes it possible to acquire embedded content using coordinated ubiquitous devices. We have also developed two prototype systems using these devices. In this paper, we describe the implementation of a prototype system that can share 3D objects in a virtual 3D space based on a real-space environment. This system can be used not only as a virtual 3D browser in a private area, but also as an interactive digital poster in a public area. We tested our system in real situation, and explore the feasibility of applying our system in a ubiquitous environment.

summary This paper looks at the design of place in a game environment. Many 3D video games have a strong orientation to streetscape and interior design. This paper questions what can be learned from architectural insights and examines how cultural references can be used in computer games to enhance the game experience by supporting game play through a deepened sense of immersion. Focusing on the cultural ideologies of play, this paper sets out to consider the suitability of real-world building design in the creation of game-world environments, with an emphasis on how level design can be enhanced through a deepened understanding of the virtual locations in which the game challenges are situated.

title Testing 3D Building Modelling Framework In Building Renovation

summary The paper describes a process where digital measuring survey data is transferred into 3D building model to be used as a foundation for renovation design. The process and method is tested in a case study of an office building of 8 floors. Measuring survey data is more often documented to 2D plan drawings, whereas 3D-modelling was more preferable in the case project. The final aim of the case project is to further test building product model or building information model (BIM) based design methods in building renovation. Product modelling is one emerging framework to manage building related information in contemporary design & construction. Model based methods are more commonly used in new buildings, whereas renovation is usually done with more traditional techniques. Case project results underline the importance of measuring and modelling definition phase. Measuring and documenting objectives for 3D-model based design work are different than for traditional design work. Measuring survey has to be done under the coordination of the designer participants. Selecting and informing the proper and capable surveying partners is also important.

summary 3D visualization of historical environments in the recent past had the form of axonometric and sketches. Generalization of the digital technology provided the user with the opportunity of virtual perception through the production of 3D models. The production of a model in historic time has several peculiarities during the collection of information, 3D modeling and visualization. The example that we used to examine this issue is the construction of the virtual model of the Ancient Agora of Athens.
