summary Our research work concerns the development of a multimodal urban traffic simulator designed to be a tool of decision-making aid similar to a game wherein the user-player can test different scenarios by immersion in a 3D virtual city. Our approach is based on the activity-based model and the multi-agent technology. The implemented result is a hybrid simulator connecting numerical simulation and behavioural aspects coming from real data. This paper is focused on two points: firstly, we introduce how a final user (the traffic regulator) instantiates and assembles components so as to model a city and its urban traffic network; secondly, we present the use of Dempster-Shafer theory in the context of discrete choice modelling. Our approach manipulates input variables in order to test realistic representations of behaviours of agent categories in a decision-making process. The traffic modelling is based on a questionnaire elaborated from standard arrays of Taguchi. The significant variables and interactions are determined with the analysis of variance which suggests a reduced model describing the behaviour of a particular social category. The belief theory is used to take into account the doubt of some respondents as well as for the preferences redistribution if the number of alternatives changes. The effects of external traffic conditions are also quantified to choose a 'robust' alternative and to use the agents' memory.

summary Urban space provides a context for human interaction. Recently, urban planning has largely placed the user at the street as the centre of infrastructural design, with significant implications for the perceived attractiveness of user environments. However, visual observation is often difficult for verifying planning goals. The simulation of pedestrian behaviour is important for physical planning, but such research is scarce. In this study, we adopt an empirical approach for generating reactive path following. Further, we implement scenarios as computer scripts with agent-based interfaces to identify navigational patterns. Moreover, we built a hierarchy of individual behavioral models and define a behavior production system to control the agent. Key attributes of streets such as rest space, utilities, landmarks, and buildings have space tags as identifiers to associate streets with related activities.

summary Most analytical pedestrian behavior researches use utility-maximizing models and have paid less attention to models based on alternative behavioral theories such as bounded rationality. Consequently, there is a lack of deeper explorations into the decision processes of pedestrians. This lack of such alternative models may also be the result of inappropriate methods to estimate such models. For this reason, the paper first introduces a modeling platform GEPAT which has the ability to estimate parallel functions using a multi-gene-sectional chromosome structure and to facilitate building models using processors emulating simple decision mechanisms. The going-home decision of pedestrians in Wang Fujing Street is taken as an example to illustrate the use of GEPAT. The most important conclusion from a comparison of the MNL, hard cut-off, soft cut-off and hybrid model is that the satisficing heuristic fits better to the problem structure, at least in this case, than the utility-maximizing rule does. This example also shows the flexibility of GEPAT as a modeling toolbox and the power of estimating complex models.

summary Shapes in designs created by architects such as Gehry Partners (Shelden, 2002), Foster and Partners, and Kohn Peterson and Fox rely on computational processes for rationalizing complex geometry for building construction. Rationalization is the reduction of a complete geometric shape into discrete components. Unfortunately, for many architects the rationalization is limited reducing solid models to surfaces or data on spread sheets for contractors to follow. Rationalized models produced by the firms listed above do not offer strategies for construction or digital fabrication. For the physical production of CAD description an alternative to the rationalized description is needed. This paper examines the coupling of digital rationalization and digital fabrication with physical mockups (Rich, 1989). Our aim is to explore complex relationships found in early and mid stage design phases when digital fabrication is used to produce design outcomes. Results of our investigation will aid architects and engineers in addressing the complications found in the translation of design models embedded with precision to constructible geometries. We present an algorithmically based approach to design rationalization that supports physical production as well as surface production of desktop models. Our approach is an alternative to conventional rapid prototyping that builds objects by assembly of laterally sliced contours from a solid model. We explored an improved product description for rapid manufacture as bilateral contouring for structure and panelling for strength (Kolarevic, 2003). Infrastructure typically found within aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, bilateral contouring is an organized matrix of horizontal and vertical interlocking ribs evenly distributed along a surface. These structures are monocoque and semi-monocoque assemblies composed of structural ribs and skinning attached by rivets and adhesives. Alternative, bi-lateral contouring discussed is an interlocking matrix of plywood strips having integral joinery for assembly. Unlike traditional methods of building representations through malleable materials for creating tangible objects (Friedman, 2002), this approach constructs with the implication for building life-size solutions. Three algorithms are presented as examples of rationalized design production with physical results. The first algorithm [Figure 1] deconstructs an initial 2D curved form into ribbed slices to be assembled through integral connections constructed as part of the rib solution. The second algorithm [Figure 2] deconstructs curved forms of greater complexity. The algorithm walks along the surface extracting surface information along horizontal and vertical axes saving surface information resulting in a ribbed structure of slight double curvature. The final algorithm [Figure 3] is expressed as plug-in software for Rhino that deconstructs a design to components for assembly as rib structures. The plug-in also translates geometries to a flatten position for 2D fabrication. The software demonstrates the full scope of the research exploration. Studies published by Dodgson argued that innovation technology (IvT) (Dodgson, Gann, Salter, 2004) helped in solving projects like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Millennium Bridge in London. title CoBlocks:An Improved Voxel-based Design Tool by Object Structuring of Voxel Models

summary This paper introduces a voxel-based collaborative modelling system called CoBlocks which was developed to support designers in building models together in a synchronized virtual environment. This is due to the fact that voxel models are gaining more attention in computer-aided design (CAD) systems as they support simple and intuitive modelling for the early design phases. However, due to the discrete nature of voxels, it is common practice in most voxel-based design systems that the voxel modelling methods have limited users to manipulate models at the level of individual voxels. From the literature, however, we might expect that voxel modelling would benefit from higher-level interaction as supported by the object structuring of such models. In light of these, a controlled lab study was therefore carried out to examine the benefits of the structuring of these models in voxel-based design systems. The results show that users prefer working with structured voxels and that they can interact better with them.

summary The choice of a chord and its execution should be regarded as a must and not left to arbitrary wish or superficial speculation. (Johannes Itten, 1961) The paper describes a modular concept for the IT-support of planning practice using BIM (Building Information Modelling) and a parameterized building model. The platform used is the modularized software concept for architectural planning in existing built contexts (prototype software FREAK). The current progress in the development of a reasoned support of planning tasks is described in this paper in more detail. The system consists of a series of software prototypes which are linked to the BIM, utilize the specific data within and demonstrate the value of a consistent and extendable CAD-model. The “Colored Architecture” software prototype is one such design-support module of the software platform and enables the designer to experiment with the parameters colour, light and materials in architectural space. This module supports experimentation, assessment and realization of colours and materials in the architectural design process on a new quality. For instance, the integration of “live radiosity” light simulation allows a qualified and interactive assessment and evaluation of colours and materials in near-real lighting conditions. The paper also details further software prototypes, modules and concepts including building surveying and the design of self-supporting domed structures.

summary This paper aims at exploring the theory of the Social Logic of Space or Space Syntax as a strategy to define parameters of road hierarchy and, if this use is found possible, to establish maximum speeds allowed in the transportation system of Brasília, the capital city of Brazil. Space Syntax – a theory developed by Hillier and Hanson (1984) – incorporates the space topological relationships, considering the city shape and its influence in the distribution of movements within the space. The theory’s axiality method – used in this study – analyses the accessibility to the street network relationships, by means of the system’s integration, one of its explicative variables in terms of copresence, or potential co-existence between the through-passing movements of people and vehicles (Hillier, 1996). One of the most used concepts of Space Syntax in the integration, which represents the potential flow generation in the road axes and is the focus of this paper. It is believed there is a strong correlation between urban space-form configuration and the way flows and movements are distributed in the city, considering nodes articulations and the topological location of segments and streets in the grid (Holanda, 2002; Medeiros, 2006). For urban transportation studies, traffic-related problems are often investigated and simulated by assignment models – well-established in traffic studies. Space Syntax, on the other hand, is a tool with few applications in transport (Barros, 2006; Barros et al, 2007), an area where configurational models are considered to present inconsistencies when used in transportation (cf. Cybis et al, 1996). Although this is true in some cases, it should not be generalized. Therefore, in order to simulate and evaluate Space Syntax for the traffic approach, the city of Brasília was used as a case study. The reason for the choice was the fact the capital of Brazil is a masterpiece of modern urban design and presents a unique urban layout based on an axial grid system considering several express and arterial long roads, each one with 3 to 6 lanes,

summary People only move a limited number of times during their lifetime. Factors such as high financial costs, local social networks, emotional bounds, etc. make that people typically postpone this decision as long as possible, up to the point where the benefit of alternative housing outperforms all these factors. Then things generally have to go fast. This combination of time-pressure, high costs and lack in experience turn residential search and location choice into a complex decision process. This paper presents a model developed to grasp some of this complexity. Households are approached as autonomous decision-makers continuously evaluating whether to search for information, to visit houses for inspection, to start negotiating with the owner of a house for sale or to do nothing and stay in the current house. Households make these evaluations on the basis of beliefs regarding their environment and update these beliefs each time they collect new information on this environment.

summary Public squares are shared by people who use them for various purposes. When people choose seats in a square, they unconsciously evaluate not only the physical characteristics of the space but also the distribution of others already present (Hall, 1966; Sommer, 1969; Whyte, 1988). Knowing the hidden rules of this behaviour will be important in designing squares that remain comfortable even in crowded situations. Most past studies of seat choice preference have reported on statistical tendencies derived from observations of subject behavior in actually existing sites (i.e., Abe, 1997; Imai, 1999; Kawamoto, 2003). However, they provide no clear theoretical model for explaining the basic mechanisms regulating such behaviour. The present study conducts a series of experiments in both real and virtual settings in order to extract quantitative relationships between subjects’ seat preferences and the presence of nearby strangers and to clarify what factors influence their seat choices.

summary Over the years, scholars have developed various models of pedestrian movement. These models can be used to assess the effects of detailed design decisions or to predict pedestrian behaviour under conditions of crowding. To date, not much attention has been paid to pedestrians' shopping behaviour at the micro level. Therefore, the main purpose of this project is to test a model that aims at simulating micro pedestrian behaviour in shopping streets, including entering shops. The model assumes a detailed network of links to represent the structure of street segments and entrances to the shops. The basic principle underlying the model is that a pedestrian moves from one link in the network to another, adjacent link. In fact, a pedestrian enters a segment at one side, heading for the other side of the segment. However, a pedestrian might enter the segment by leaving a shop as well. Then, the pedestrian might be heading for either side of the segment. While transferring from the current link to the next link, the pedestrian will be attracted by the shops along both sides of the street. The study area is Antwerp's main shopping street. During a one-week workshop in July 2004, students observed pedestrian movement in this shopping street. An inventory of some physical characteristics of the shopping street was made and pedestrians were tracked through two separate segments of the shopping street. In total, 334 pedestrians were tracked. A conventional multinomial logit model is used to simulate pedestrians' micro behaviour. The process of consecutively selecting links continues until the pedestrian has reached one of the terminal links or a shop. The model performs very well. Simulated routes were used to assess the validity of the model. Observed and simulated link loading correspond fairly well, however, the model seems to slightly mispredict the attraction of a number of shops.

summary In architectural education the process of design has evolved with the development of CAD technology. In many design schools throughout the world, the computer has extended its role beyond that of a drafting machine to become a tool for performance modeling. Applications currently used by students test lighting, thermal conditions, and structural validity, to name a few. However the goals in education are not identical to those in practice, and digital modeling can support learning in many ways that are not particularly useful or appropriate in professional practice. In the design of structures there are three fundamental levels of understanding: behavior, form, and performance. Each has its place in design education and uses digital modeling in different forms. This paper describes various pedagogical models that incorporate computer aided drawing and performance modeling in the teaching of structures. Examples of student exercises and projects are discussed.

summary With the rise of the digital in architecture and the availability of digital fabrication tools, the interest in the material aspect of the model has intensified. At the same time, the design space for exploration of material behavior and its design potential has been extended from the physical into the digital. This has resulted in a cyclic set of translations from the physical realm into the digital by means of mathematical descriptions and back from the digital realm into the physical by means of digitally controlled fabrication processes. Despite the availability of more and more computational power and improvement of precision in simulation, these translations from the physical into the digital and vice versa can never be exact (Eco 2006), the translations from the physical model into a digital model and from the digital into the physical are "spaces of instability" (Evans 2000). The current paper explores in more detail this space of instability between physical and digital models, its potential for architectural design, and the central role of the mathematical description in this reciprocal set of translations.

summary The experience considers the achievement of a course for architecture and geography. The research penetrates into an experimentation based on the Systems Theory and the Systems Dynamics, which helps to understand the structure and the dynamics of the city, as a set of complex systems. SimCity, a game of strategy that allows to design, to plan, and to manage the dynamics of a city, is used as software. The experience had as principal target, tackling formulae of didactic experimentation, which integrate, by the application of networks and systems, the complex relations that configures the city. The methodology had theoretical and experimental stages, plus the achievement of a simulation exercise. The experience had very good reception, as method for learning and for research, despite the strange that it seemed in the beginning. summary This paper describes a usability-based building model we developed for behavior simulation in design phase, and a systematic approach to implement it. Our model possesses not only geometric information of design elements but also non-geometric information of these elements, specifically, the relationships between the elements and the intended users. This relationship, which was implicitly understood by the designer, now becomes explicit to the simulated users. It utilizes CAD models and automates the conversion from CAD models to usability models and therefore requires minimal additional effort in preparing building data for behavior simulation, which has proven to be efficient and effective.

summary Urban pedestrian studies on navigation have been conducted for developing applications to ease the task of exploring in a virtual environment. As navigation in virtual environments is evidently difficult and as many virtual worlds have been designed to be used by untrained visitors that explore the environment, navigational supports are critically needed. This study is aimed to collect information about the user needs in order to build a model of user preference and produce simulative scenarios that can reveal the navigational patterns related to street design. The study is based on the attention theory for studying people who are socially interacting with street activities and furniture within designated areas. Furthermore, the study attempts to apply agent interface develop a prototype system with space tags. Finally, the system and its applications, and major findings of these applications are reported

summary This research attempts to formulate a computational framework for exploring spatial arrangements in the early phases of design. In the physical world, this could be compared to exploring spatial arrangements using cardboard cut-outs or simply a grid of spaces on paper. This research demonstrates the framework by means of a generative design system that introduces axial order in a plan parti made up of discrete 3D objects. The tool is designed to organize the 3D objects along an Axis specified by the user and also rearrange them following user-defined mathematical expressions. The numerical parameters (the dimensions and physical properties of the individual objects) are linked through the mathematical expressions to vary the spatial arrangement of objects. Implementation of the tool involves the Self Organizing Maps (SOMs) as the Graphical User Interface (GUI) in generative systems. This allows the user to select and dynamically view spatial arrangements that have been organized on a map based on their similarity. The application is implemented, tested, and its results are demonstrated using buildings designed by Louis I. Kahn, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe.

summary The purpose of the paper is to bring together the two newly elaborated concepts of Digital Territories (DT) and Design Construction Continuum (DCC) in order to approach the design of evolving – intelligent environments.Digital Territories is a concept elaborated 2005 by a Core Expert Group, conceived as an ephemeral Ambient Intelligence (AmI) space. DTs formed through the interconnection of physical objects embedding digital technologies, postulate the integration of the physical and the digital world, searching for operative definitions of new evolving in time functionalities. In DT’s, bridges between the physical and the digital are discrete elements disposing of certain autonomy in their conception and internal structure. Bridges have to be designed and located. The DCC proposes to relate design, fabrication and construction through information networks (it is in fact a DT). Through the DCC approach, design information is becoming construction information and industrial fabrication information. The DCC has to integrate interaction design and respond to questions posed by DTs design. DTs are integrated to DCC by constituting an intermediate level between building programming and design. Intelligent Building Components, that is AmI components operating as bridges between the physical and the digital in Digital Territories formations, cooperating to develop swarm intelligence applications to architectural space, are elements managed by the DCC. DT’s are about spaces communicating and the DCC is about communicating (design) space.

summary Environmental design implementations are generally applied within limited and specialised areas of environmental design making them difficult to use intuitively by designers (Maneesatid and Szalapaj, 2003). Building simulations have mostly focused on accurate parameters and physical properties of building elements. Such tools typically require numerous numerical data which is often only accurately known in the detail design stages. Conventional environmental building design systems (EBS) have typically required highly experienced users who are familiar with extensive qualitative input and output requirements. A successful architectural design solution that is both energy efficient and environmentally friendly, cannot be obtained simply by additively combining a set of discrete specialist analyses. A move towards better architectural design with environmental considerations can be achieved by allowing designers themselves to express relationships between salient environmental parameters that can subsequently be analysed in integrated ways. This presentation is concerned with the issues involved in developing a quick and intuitive interface for expression of relationships between environmental parameters.
