summary Representational approaches have always played an important role in the design-driven development of built environments, the analytical study of architectural compositions and their effects. With the introduction – and successive steady development – of computer-based platforms of visualization, the professional and intellectual palette of designers, as well as researchers, have expanded considerably. Nonetheless, in recent years the opportunities for systematic scrutiny and understanding of the expressive qualities of design proposals and artefacts have all too frequently been overshadowed by high-flying conceptual developments and seductive representation modes. It is time that the objective description and unravelling of architectural compositions – so to speak the discipline of Ekphrasis in design practice, education and research – is once again given more prominence in architectural discourse and debate. The central idea behind this contribution is that, by linking instruments of design with the methods of formal composition and decomposition, renewed opportunities for representation-driven study in a scholarly context, focusing upon elusive compositional attributes and their workings, may be given a new impulse. The project that is presented here concerns a case-based explorative study into the domains of aesthetic convention and invention, making use of a variety of virtual and physical representation techniques. These include digital as well as tangible modelling and sketching approaches (separately and in combination), in conjunction with computer-based image manipulation techniques, making use of systematic data identification and denotation. The opportunities, merits and shortcomings of the computer-based and physical visualization approaches, which were applied and tested, are discussed on the basis of results and findings from the ongoing AA Variations project.

title The built environment revisited digitally: an approach to 2D and 3D CAD teaching

summary There is a characteristic that distinguishes the School of Architecture at Oklahoma State University from other architecture schools in the United States and that is the absence of a design studio in the spring semester of the third year. Among the various classes the students are required to take during this time is ARCH 3253_computer applications in architecture defined in the School catalog as an “introduction to 2D and 3D computer CAD topics and their application in the design process.” The absence of a design studio has allowed [me] to morph an otherwise technically oriented course to a course that weaves the learning of the basic of various computer programs with research, writing, graphic and physical explorations. This paper exposes the pedagogy of the course alongside sample of students’ work during the spring 2006 semester and will disclose its future development as web and film technologies are introduced to the course. The introduction of the “forth dimension” to the course will both augment and foster alternative means of architectural communication by promoting multimodal representations and will respond to the personal observation that in spite of the essentially total use of the computer in the daily creative life of students and professionals alike, the architectural representation output has virtually remained unchanged [and for the most part unchallenged] since the time when pens, pencils, and papers were the media of choice. In addition to its pedagogical character, the paper will also share the personal explorations that triggered following one of the assignments and led to the development and realization of a graphic piece for one of the summer 2006 exhibits at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Scottsdale, Arizona and prompted the initial development of the design of a restaurant, also in Scottsdale, Arizona [in its schematic design phase at the time of the writing of this abstract].

title The Architectural Cinematographer: Creating Architectural Experiences in 3D Real-time Environments

summary This paper addresses the problem of creating new navigation paradigms for experiencing architectural designs in 3D real-time environments. The exploration of techniques other than still images or fly-through animations is complex and manifold, and requires the understanding and skills of many disciplines including cinematography, computer programming, architectural design and communication of 3D space. In this article, we present the Architectural Cinematographer (AC), a first step towards new navigation paradigms for real-time interactive virtual environments that are intended to enhance architectural walkthroughs with interactive camera effects. The AC is a fully developed modification (mod) of the game UnrealTournament2004™ using the Unreal™ game engine and relies on the notions of architectural concepts, cinematographic techniques and game level design to structure the virtual environment (VE) content in a way that facilitates a perception of design qualities in virtual architecture. AC addresses the current lack of either software or a structured approach to facilitate this in real-time architectural visualizations.

summary In this investigation we are concerned with rethinking and proposing the concept of space towards an enhanced interactive place where our spatial surroundings are no longer understood as fixed but as living organisms that adapt to our inter-actions inside of them. It is the aim of the research to show a space created by the interaction of the users with the building rather than the one generated by the personal interpretation of the designer. A place co-created by its inhabitant in real-time through a virtual prototype. Hereby, we are interested to investigate human-computer interactions inside of game engines as a morphogenetic process for potential architectural design and space conception. This research not only underlines theoretical concepts of architecture and folding as a spatio-structural diagrams that generate emergent processes in architecture design, but also proposes the creation and further development of a prototype based on these potentials that computer games and multimedia have brought to experiment and determine architectural environments. With the potentials of 3D Real-Time engines as design environments for the co-development of user driven spaces and folding as a design formation attitude we aim to determine space within the experience of a space prototype.

summary The Traversable Matrix (Fig. 1.) illustrates the iterative fragments that comprise the continuum of exploration for a digital aesthetic and digital tectonic. These non-hierarchical fragments operate as footholds across a larger tessellated landscape of current digital design explorations. In seeking an organizational strategy, we attempt to move laterally across a variety of examples, texts, and illustrations. Each short excerpt is a partial architecture illustrating deeper issues in the current discussion of digital fabrication. Though counter to conventional academic inquiry, the associative approach can help frame the matrix; the synthetic landscape traversed becomes less linear, less framed but no less interconnected and cohesive. The patterning of complex geometries, the production of ornament, the leveraging of digital fabrication against standard forms of material and construction practices, and the acute emphasis on surface all serve as the aggregate to a broader spectrum of architectural thinking and architectural making.Introduction: The Traversable Matrix

summary This paper describes a dynamic teaching model developed to explore new intellectual and theoretical directions of design generation. It utilizes shape grammars as a pedagogical tool for introducing the concept of design computing to graduate students of architecture without a background in computation theory. summary Architectural design requires a variety of representations to describe the many expressions a building can be observed through. Commonly, the form and space of a building are represented through the visual abstraction of projective geometry. The medium of geometric representation has become synonymous with architectural space. The introduction of computational design in architecture has not changed our understanding or representation of architectural space, only of its geometric description and production processes. The addition of the computer as a medium should allow us to open new ‘ways of seeing’ since the medium allows for novel descriptions and expressions via data processing hitherto impossible. This paper would like to propose some computational methods that could potentially describe and generate non-geometric but rather phenomenal expressions of architectural space.

summary Urban regions today face serious challenges caused by past and ongoing transport and land use developments. Decision making in this context is a challenging task which was explored in detail in a series of research projects. To support decision making, tools were developed to reduce the risk of inappropriate decisions in the land use and transport context. One of these tools is MARS (Metropolitan Activity Relocation Simulator); an integrated dynamic land use and transport model. The paper presented here focuses therefore on two main issues: 1) the introduction of the decision support tool MARS and of the cause-effect relations between the land-use and the transport system implemented within MARS; and 2) the design and application of the MARS flight simulator (MARS FS) as a graphical user interface for MARS especially designed to the needs of decision makers.

summary This paper examines how political commitment to participatory design within the context of a major urban redevelopment project was translated into a strategy and a course of action for achieving effective participation within a demanding project timeframe. The project in question involves a new transport interchange for the city of Auckland (New Zealand), the redevelopment of a number of heritage buildings, and the introduction of new buildings to create a mixed use precinct covering three city blocks. The project, currently being implemented, has involved extensive public consultation and stakeholder participation as it has proceeded through the stages of project visioning, an open public design competition, and the development of the competition winning design. The paper draws a distinction between the contributions of stakeholders versus the public at large to the decision-making process, outlines the different kinds of participatory processes adopted by the local authority (Auckland City Council) to effectively engage and involve these two different groups and the stages in the evolution of the project at which these different contributions were introduced. The model of 'open design' proposed by van Gunsteren and van Loon is used as a basis for explaining the success of multi-stakeholder inputs at a crucial stage in project development. The paper concludes by examining the limits of applicability of the 'open design' model in the context of urban redevelopment projects in which there is broad public interest, and by suggesting a number of design decision support guidelines for the management of participatory processes.

summary This paper considers the introduction of both human-computer inteface and interactive multimedia design in the architectural education and practice. The development of information and communication technologies offers to architects new tools of design as well as new areas of architectural practice. What is more decisive is the change of mentality in the way of conceiving space and of the design procedure itself. The question posed is if drawing conventions are changing and in what way? The paper attempts to establish analogies between the recent introduction into architectural thought of notions such as the human body movement, events and scenarios with the development of navigation and interaction principles and conventions in the computer world. The study of human-computer interface contributes in the understanding of the major role of the computer screen as a point of convergence of different representational forms and the emergence of new ones proper to the digital culture.

summary The introduction of machines into human affairs produces tension between competing needs. We need to engage the world directly with the hand, and we need to augment the hand with mechanical power. What is the right balance between human autonomy and mechanical influence – between direct and indirect control? With the rise of the computer age, we seem to resolve the matter in favor of machines, encouraging their unrestrained expansion. However, a Resistance Movement persists. It resurfaces with each wave of technological invention, rekindling the tension. This can be seen in the current debate over the appropriate use of digital fabrication technology. Some architects believe it yields unprecedented creative freedom by overcoming the restrictions of mass production. Others believe it alienates us from a vital source of inspiration by deemphasizing direct contact with material. This paper examines the hand-machine conflict in its current form, and argues that its polarized categories cloud our thinking with false moral alternatives such as: embrace technology and foster a new aesthetic age, or resist it and protect mankind from further alienation. Instead, we should seek a third alternative that frees us from this either-or thinking. One established way of doing this in architectural design is to use traditional media and computer media in oscillation. The paper critically evaluates this approach and presents a design studio experiment that moves beyond oscillation, seeking a higher degree of hand-machine unity.

summary This plywood cladding project explores the tension between material fabrication and parametric control. Student Dan Hesketh performed experiments to discover latent properties of plywood, which were then used to drive the design. The introduction of parametric modeling complicated the effort, however, raising issues of Digital Exchange. On one hand, parametric control empowered the student to explore a wider range of geometries. On the other hand, by doing so, awareness of materiality was curtailed.

summary A few decades ago architects, engineers and the building industry relied on a set of self-developed tools for drawing and standards for communication within the profession and beyond. Everyone involved in the process of building understood these standards that were developed, controlled and updated by the profession. Today the situation appears more ambiguous. The introduction of Digital Media, and specifically Computer Aided Design, has greatly enhanced the potential for productivity gains. On the other hand, the lack of standardized open file exchange formats in CAD has created communication barriers by making data exchange more confusing and ambiguous. Frequently this has consumed the very productivity gains that were originally envisioned by industry. Problems with proper and fluent data exchange between software applications to no small extent are due to fundamental disagreements between software designers on the proper digital description of a building, leading to nearly insurmountable communication obstacles, designed to potentially divide the profession, practitioners and the educational environment. Consequently construction has not partaken in the productivity gains that other industries have enjoyed. Proprietary file formats and closed software systems have fostered the development of design camps that rally behind one software. Others reluctantly buy into certain “solutions” for they are perceived to be standards. Innovation is hampered as development of industry design tools is no longer controlled by architects, engineers and the construction sector but instead by private software companies frequently pursuing their Based on 20 years of experience with CAD in the profession and academia this paper critically investigates the status quo of CAD in the building industry. It points towards strategies of overcoming the current problematic situation and putting the profession back in control of its own communication process.

summary One of the essential considerations in architectural design is how people use the built environments. Adequate study of environmental behavior can reveal significant information about that use. This research suggests applying new computing technologies to enhance environmental behavior study, in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. Specifically, this project will develop an integrated system of automatic video tracking and video-quality virtual reality. The integrated system will provide designers and behavioral scientists with substantial statistical measurements of end user behavior patterns. Furthermore it will enable them to walk through the virtual reality of the environments and interactively observe details of the behaviors from various viewpoints. Thus, this project can help obtain behavior data in different levels of details, and in a structured and planned way that can facilitate analysis of the data with maximum automation. The major significance of this project is an introduction of a rigorous new methodology into environmental behavior study to enhance first-person observation with state-of-the-art computing technologies. This research will be a novel application of virtual reality in environmental behavior study. We expect that it will fundamentally advance the methods behavioral scientists use to study human environmental behavior, and the ways architects evaluate architectural design in terms of human behavior.

summary Rapid prototyping (RP) techniques are widely used within the design/manufacturing industry and are well established in manufacturing industry. These digital techniques offer quick and accurate prototypes with relatively low cost when we require exact likeness to a particular scale and detail. 3D modeling of buildings on CAD-systems in the AEC sector is now becoming more popular and becoming widely used practice as the higher efficiency of working with computers is being recognized. However the building of scaled physical representations is still performed manually, which generally requires a high amount of time. Complex post-modernist building forms are more faithfully and easily represented in a solid visualization form, than they could be using traditional model making methods. Using RP within the engineering community has given the users the possibility to communicate and visualize designs with greater ease with the clients and capture any error within the CAD design at an early stage of the project or product lifecycle. In this paper, the application of RP in architecture is reviewed and the possibilities of modeling architectural models are explored. A methodology of developing rapid prototypes with 3D CAD models using methods of solid freeform manufacturing in particular Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is presented and compared against traditional model making methods. An economical analysis is presented and discussed using a case study and the potential of applying RP techniques to architectural models is discussed.

summary This paper describes an instructional communication strategy that makes use of time-based media techniques (story boarding and animation) in order to empower design studios with means to promote their students’ awareness on the acquisition of metacognitive knowledge and skills. This paper highlights the importance of including the communication of the design processes in the evaluation of learning outcomes. Moreover, the paper proposes that the students should be made constantly aware of their design processes and how effective are the methods they use. It is in this state of awareness that metacognitive knowledge is acquired: knowing how to learn to design. We can cultivate, exploit and enhance the capabilities of design learners, making them more confident and independent as learners as they understand what they need to know and what kind of strategies might work for different design problems and learning opportunities. In the development of an instructional strategy to accomplish this learning goal, the paper proposes it may be possible and potentially beneficial to transfer current metacognitive support strategies from a course on computer visualization techniques to the design studios. The paper elaborates on how these communication strategies could be transferred and implemented in a design studio setting. The results of a recent controlled experiment and considerations about the cognitive style of design students will be used in the preparation of recommendations for future full scale implementations in early design studios.
