summary Architecture in the 21st century has become an increasingly complex affair. In addition to new social and cultural norms, architects are inundated with constantly changing information regarding new materials, sustainable processes, and complex building types. This state of affairs has also affected the expectations placed on architectural education. Critics (in diverse spheres) have expressed concerns about the lack of requisite skills of graduates that characterise good design thinking strategies as well as promote responsible design. It has been proposed by this author in other forums that by using digital technology to empower design learning, we can allow students to confidently use (through reading and analysis) their sketches to develop conceptual ideas that reconcile disparate elements into a habitable, environmentally friendly and architecturally responsible whole that is fit for purpose, cost effective, sustainable and a delight to clients and users. This paper will seek to discuss one of the concepts that govern such a tool. It will start by delineating the problem (discussed earlier in the abstract) before outlining the concepts or principles that a design teaching tool should adhere to. These concepts acknowledge the importance for the tool to reflect the nature of design tasks, facilitate learning and be accessible to all learning types. The paper will then focus on one concept - the nature of design tasks. The subsequent sections will describe an information structure borne from this idea and make mention of a current prototype of the tool. The paper will conclude with a discussion of the strengths of considering this concept.

summary Synthetic Dissemination, within the context of architecture and information culture, offers seemingly contradictory possibilities. The ends of dissemination and synthesis are at odds. The purpose of the former being diffusion and distribution, and the byproduct of the latter being quite the opposite - namely the combination and association of information into a coherent whole. The conjoining of dissemination and synthesis implies these two contradictory operations can operate in a symbiotic or complementary manner.Relative to architecture and design the combination of dissemination and synthesis is potentially profound. The marriage of synthesis and dissemination presents a possibility that the method of distributing information could be, or have embedded within it, a synthetic process. In the simplest sense synthetic dissemination implies that the tools for design and synthesis could be the same as tools for documentation and dissemination; or more specifically that the fluidity and creativity of design software could be coupled with the practicality and meticulousness of building information modelers (BIM). More abstractly synthetic dissemination implies that the means of encoding and distributing information could propagate design. Architects have readily adopted digital tools for encoding and presenting their ideas, but have not fully recognized how the informational structures of these applications promote or hinder design. Developments in the information architecture of D software, such as the shift from geometrically based data structures to procedurally based directed action graphs (DAG) as seen in Maya and DMax, have opened up innovative methods of architectural design. Each new change in the information architecture of design software ushers in new approaches to design, raising the question - how does the production and storage of information affect design? More broadly, how can the tools of dissemination facilitate synthesis?

title Calibrated Sky Luminance Maps for Daylight Simulation

summary Building design and control applications can benefit from daylight simulation. Sky models help to model the sky conditions and predict the availability of daylight in indoor environments. Sky luminance is changing according to the weather, the season of the year and the time of the day, therefore it is difficult to create an accurate sky model. The simplified models that are currently used for computational simulation do not take into account these constant changes. It is important to test if there is the possibility of creating a sky model that approaches the characteristics of real sky and provides the architects with more precise daylight predictions. As past research has demonstrated, relatively low-cost sky luminance mapping via digital imaging can provide an alternative to highly sophisticated sky scanners and support the provision of information on sky luminance distribution patterns on a more pervasive basis. The aim of this research is first to explore the potential of deriving sky luminance distribution maps based on digital imaging and then to test their efficiency for the prediction of indoor daylight. A comparison is made between the predictions based on existing sky models (CIE Standard Skies and Perez All-weather sky) and the camera-based sky model. Thus, the effects of the selection of the sky model on indoor daylighting prediction are explored. A set of measurements were performed at the roof of the TU Vienna in order to obtain the necessary data. The horizontal illuminance levels due to 12 sky sectors were measured with the help of a sky monitoring device. A scale (1:5) model of an architectural space was used to measure the indoor illuminance values with the help of three sensors. At the same time, images of the sky were obtained with the help of a digital camera with a fish-eye converter. Luminance values were derived from the images and four calibration methods were used to generate accurate sky luminance distribution maps. These variously calibrated luminance values were then compared with the corresponding photometric measurements. Finally, the application of a digitally derived sky model based on the best calibration method was compared with the other two sky models toward the prediction of indoor illuminance levels using the case of the scale model. The results demonstrated that the camera-based sky model was more reliable than the other two sky models. It was concluded that digital imaging combined with parallel photometric calibration can provide a valuable means for a real-time generation of sky luminance maps. Detailed sky luminance models can be generated and their application can increase the predictive accuracy of the computational daylight prediction tools. Moreover, the reliability of daylight simulation can be increased toward supporting the design process and the operation of daylighting systems in buildings.

title Responsive Architecture: User-centered Interactions within the Hybridized Model of Control

summary In the September 1969 issue of Architectural Design, Andrew Rabeneck wrote about the use of cybernetic devices within an automated architecture. He hypothesized that the concept of ‘flexibility’ was introduced to architecture because existing building technologies were inherently inflexible. He argued that architects should use cybernetic technologies to produce completely new types of increasingly flexible, user-centred, buildings.

Three years later, Yona Friedman wrote about the changing relationship between clients and architects. He said that a new design methodology was needed because architects could not assess the future spatial needs of building users accurately enough. Proposing a new model, he split architectural design in two complementary halves, hardware design and software design, reasoning that this would give users the opportunity to adapt built spaces to suit their needs.

Both of these ideas describe approaches to the production of an architecture that can change shape and configuration in response to changing patterns of use. Rabeneck’s approach illustrates the benefit of predictive technologies and automation, while Friedman’s model illustrates the benefit of user intervention and direct manipulation. This paper discusses developments in the field of responsive architecture in relation to two opposing user-centred interaction methodologies. It proposes methods for controlling responsive buildings and suggests that human computer interaction methodologies need to be re-thought and extended when applied within intelligent, responsive, architectures.

summary Architectural animations often evidence limitations when trying to get across our design intensions in terms of the experiencing of a place. When architects design a space, they propose not only geometry and space functionality, All in all, any architectural design implies a way of experiencing the space. But how can we communicate it? Narrative films developed - in the last century - communication conventions that allow the audience to feel transported to the time and place of the movie. However, architects have barely introduced these conventions into their animations. The objective of this paper is to review two examples - a scene on a film and a video installation- that could help architects to use film codes creatively in when communicating the experiencing of a place.

summary Part of an EU funded project to develop a “VIrtual campus for virtual space design Provided for European Architects (VIPA)” was the implementation of a practical run at the Vienna University of Technology. Therein we attempted to evaluate some of the concepts and technologies which were intended for the e-learning platform. After briefly introducing the didactical background, this paper concentrates on the technological setup accompanying the course. Especially the use of Croquet as an immersive three-dimensional environment to teach generative design is highlighted; its strengths and weaknesses in supporting our envisioned didactical concept are analysed. The practical run and its evaluation by the participating students are described, as well as some of the student work performed during and after the course. Concluding remarks elaborating on problems encountered in the software setup and in our didactical concept, followed by the description of future work to amend the above mentioned pitfalls, will mark the end.

summary In this paper we explore possibilities for using Artificial Intelligence techniques to boost the performance of urban design tools by providing large scale data analysis and inference capability. As a proof of concept experiment we showcase a novel application that learns to identify a certain type of urban setting, Main Streets, based on architectural and socioeconomic features of its vicinity. Our preliminary experimental results show the promising potential for the use of machine learning in the solving of urban planning problems.

With attitudes of training and instruction, the focus is typically on skill acquisition and demonstration of such skills through successful completion of project tasks.The context of studio teaching, however, is one that is immensely powerful and makes a substantial contribution to the intellectual approaches to comprehending our realities and, more importantly, our futures. In this paper I will focus on three aspects of studio that warrant attention, among the many that demand it, especially as digital media and environments, beyond tools, are pervasive in design. This paper will consider the importance of studio education as the context for design education from the aspects of design as asocial act, design as an expert act, design as an engagement of data.

summary The conceptual design of virtual spaces is creating new places in which to live and work. In consequence, new opportunities for work and employment are opening up for architects as well as for architectural educators. In response to this challenge, VIPA, a transnational virtual campus is currently being developed; it contains an e-learning and research platform for European architectural schools with a focus on virtual space design. The virtual campus integrates administrative, curricular, and communicative infrastructures, interactive, multimedia 3-D contents, and pedagogical considerations in respect of the aims, content and technologies employed. Virtual campuses are already established at most universities in the European Community, yet surprisingly e-learning is not yet widespread in architectural schools in Europe. E-learning is arguably still in an initial research phase; although there are best practice examples where e-learning is already replacing traditional study forms in other teaching disciplines. However, it has been found that although all the universities involved in the VIPA project have been involved in e-learning projects for many years, there is a considerable resistance to e-learning as being equally effective as traditional face-to-face studio teaching. Given the new virtual conditions of space design however, new contexts for learning are increasingly relevant. University curricula have developed out of local competencies, networks of teachers and researchers. These local factors need to be woven into the fabric of a transnational VIPA curriculum and supported with organizational layout, platform, user interfaces and their features. Participants will offer existing courses in virtual space design, as well as developing new ones. This offers the option for both present and future participants to adjust the VIPA courseware to suit local curricula demands, while offering a large range of courses and knowledge. An additional feature of VIPA is thus as a platform for curricula development in virtual space design. The paper reports on the VIPA project’s aims, pedagogical problems, solutions, course content and methods; it will describe prototype results from participating universities and include perspectives on its future application.

summary This paper presents how a situated agent model can wrap around a design optimization tool and construct concepts from interaction between the agent, the design problem and the use of the tool. The agent develops its structure and behaviour specific to what it is confronted with - its experience. summary Over the last decade, paradigm shifts in the philosophy of space-time relations, the change from space-time to spatio-temporality, caused significant changes in the design field, and introduced new variations and discourses for parametric approaches in architecture. Among all the discourses, parametricism is likely the most spectacular one. The founder of parametricism, Patrik Schumacher (2009) describes it as “a new style,” which has “the superior capacity to articulate programmatic complexity;” and “aesthetically, it is the elegance of ordered complexity in the sense of seamless fluidity.” In its theoretical background, Schumacher (2011) affiliates this style with the philosophy of autopoiesis, the philosophy that stands between making and becoming. Additionally, parametricism concerns not only the physical geometry in making of form; but also discusses the relational and causal aspects in becoming of form. In other words, it brings the aesthetic qualities in making through the topological intelligence behind becoming. Regarding that, parametricism seems an effective way of managing /creating complex topologies in form-related issues. However, when it comes to practice, there are some challenging points of parametricism in large-scale design studies. Thus, this work underlines that the dominance of elegance for urban planning has the potential of limiting the flexible and dynamic topology of the urban context, and objectifying the whole complex urban form as an over-designed product. For an aesthetic inquiry into urban parametricism, this paper highlights the challenging issues behind the aesthetic premises of parametricism at the urban design scale. For that, Kartal Master Plan Design Proposal by Zaha Hadid Architects (2006) will be discussed as an exemplary work.

The presentation describes the experience and the results of creative process that link a group of music and architecture students and teachers for a hypermedia composition. The processes are orientated to the simultaneous construction of products from two approaches: from music to the form (plastic or visual), and vice versa. summary Digital design education is shifting from software and hardware application to issue-based, methodology-driven and technology-driven exploration. The attempts in design education have to address the future needs for architects, for instance the tectonic design. The dialogue with the materials (virtual and physical ones) is integrated with the exercises. The attempts in the design studio undertaken in National Cheng Kung University provide the foundation for observation and discussion. summary Building information modeling is the technology that is converting the workplace in design firms. The initial resistance to applying the concept has faded due to many reasons. Professional architects now see the feasibility and benefits of using the new technology. CAD managers in design firms are working toward the implementation of BIM packages in order to eventually, replace the conventional CAD platforms that are still widely used. However, there are still internal obstacles that slow down the process of the implementation. The change in the project management and the required proper training for the conversion are the two major internal obstacles. The current well organized work flow tailored around the conventional CAD platforms has to be changed in a way suitable for the new technology. The training firms provide for their employees should also be re-structured in a more vertical organization in order to guarantee that everyone understands the new concept and the new work flow. Architectural education usually reflects the needs of the work market. It is very important to understand the needs and identify the directions where the architectural education should go. What do we expect from newly graduated architects? How should we shift the focus toward BIM based CAD in design schools? And, what does it mean to teach modeling versus teaching drafting?

title Design Exploration through Bidirectional Modeling of Constraints

summary Today digital models for design exploration are not used to their full potential. The research efforts in the past decades have placed geometric design representations firmly at the center of digital design environments. In this thesis it is argued that models for design exploration that bridge different representation aid in the discovery of novel designs. Replacing commonly used analytical, uni-directional models for linking representations, with bidirectional ones, further supports design exploration. The key benefit of bidirectional models is the ability to swap the role of driver and driven in the exploration. The thesis developed around a set of design experiments that tested the integration of bidirectional computational models in domain specific designs. From the experiments three main exploration types emerged. They are: branching explorations for establishing constraints for an undefined design problem; illustrated in the design of a concept car. Circular explorations for the refinement of constraint relationships; illustrated in the design of a chair. Parallel explorations for exercising well-understood constraints; illustrated in a form finding model in architecture. A key contribution of the thesis is the novel use of constraint diagrams developed to construct design explorers for the experiments. The diagrams show the importance of translations between design representations in establishing design drivers from the set of constraints. The incomplete mapping of design features across different representations requires the redescription of the design for each translation. This redescription is a key aspect of exploration and supports design innovation. Finally, this thesis argues that the development of design specific design explorers favors a shift in software design away from monolithic, integrated software environments and towards open software platforms that support user development.

summary Various approaches of virtual and physical modeling have led to a synthetic form of making that is plastic and scalable in nature. This shift from traditional forms of representing and generating architecture now offers a better possibility of full-scale construction and fabrication processes and links transparently to industry. Architects are beginning to dynamically inform the visioning processes of assemblies and design through a range of precise subassemblies. Further to this end, the synthetic techniques and materials are opening up avenues for designers to investigate a range of fibers and fabrics that radically transform light and color renditions, and texture. Investigations in the realm of traditional materials such as stone, wood, and concrete continue to evolve, as do their associated methods of making. As a result of synthetic technologies, architects today have the possibility to work along side industry engineers and professionals to design castings, moldings, patterns, and tools that challenge not only the architectural work of art, but industrial and product design as well. This cultural shift from physical space to virtual space back to physical space and the combination of hand-, digital-, and robotic-making offers a unique juxtaposition of the built artifact to its manufacturing that challenges both spatial conventions and also the levels of precision and tolerance by which buildings are assembled. Traditional forms of documentation for example result typically in discrepancies between the drawn and the actualized which are now challenged by the level of precision and tolerance at the virtual level. It is within this context that leading-edge architects and designers operate today. Yet, how the profession and the academy respond to these opportunities remains an open line of inquiry and addressing these concerns opens up the rich potential enabled through synthetic making.

summary As to the Russian word “dvizhenije” two almost equal English words - “movement” and “motion” correspond, we had to decide, which approaches our message better. As a result we have chosen “movement”, as in the interpretation of our dictionaries this word reflects its philosophical essence more. In philosophical treatment the movement is a general concept uniting characteristics of moving, made by objects, interactions between them, changes which take place between them, transformations of some objects into other ones. There are forms of movement in which objects change their positions, but do not change themselves, and such forms in which there are quantitative and qualitative changes in objects. Aristotle writes about six kinds of movement: appearance, destruction, increase, reduction, transformation, relocation. If at first the movement was examined for a long time only as movement of bodies, many years later ideas enlarged and in the foreground there appeared such versions of movement, as becoming, change and development. Proceeding from these basic concepts we have tried to analsze briefly the role of movement as some necessary element of realisation in architectural education.

summary The current paper aims to a conceptual approach to the widespread algorithmic architectures defined for Terzidis Kostas (2006) through the philosophy of complex sciences theorized by Edgar Morin (1998). It intends to discuss two approaches outwardly contradictory emerged from the theme: on one hand, the conception of contemporary architecture is beyond generation of complex shapes into computer software, on the other hand the overvaluation of logics can lead architects to incur in the same mistake of simplification performed by the modernists.

summary Rendering engines produce ever higher degrees of photorealism, and the process of image-making becomes increasingly automated. Architects benefit from this, but they also pay a price. They exchange local control at the tip of a pencil for global control through a list of variables. They exchange the incremental build-up of line and tone for the fast calculation of summative snapshots. This paper argues that the loss of local and incremental image control necessarily leads to an erosion of visual literacy. Lacking this control, students do not practice the close scrutiny needed to develop a critical eye. To combat this, students should be taught to combine the local and the global, the incremental and the summative. A series of teaching exercises are presented that seek a better balance between automation and human influence. Rather than resisting the digital medium, the exercises explore methods of teaching visual scrutiny within the digital medium. Students learn to see the flaws in computer-generated images, and they correct the flaws with local and incremental changes. Armed with the principle of the constructed image, students regain some control of the image-making process and use it to expressive ends, but an adjusted pedagogy is not sufficient. As long as software engineers prefer to make tools that automate human effort rather than augment it, architects will lack vital image control. The concept of the constructed image is needed not only to teach visual literacy in the digital age, but to focus the fight for more appropriate tools.

summary This article communicates results of an experimental pedagogical strategy aiming at both, introducing and taking advantage of new technologies in an architectural design studio. One of the reasons for the notorious unfriendliness of CAD software to the design process comes from the attempt to imitate traditional pen and paper design on the computer. While the whole process could be completely different when performed in a digital environment offering powerful form generation and knowledge modelling possibilities. the proposed teaching method is based on the following principles: (1) emphasis on new methods of designing made possible by the use of computer; (2) communicating the design process, and not only the final result; (3) exploring parametric design for generation of different formal expressions of a design concept; (4) using visual programming to create inter-object relations, etc. A comparison of this experimental approach to other approaches used in design studios (digital or traditional), proves that the architectural results obtained are largely related to the chosen medium and the tools of work. In our opinion, this teaching approach proves to be promising for introducing considerable qualitative changes in the architectural profession, and this way in our built environment as well.
