summary The use of technology has grown with the way design professions have evolved over time. Changing needs, desires of comfort, and perceptions of the consumers have led to a distinct improvement in the design of both product and architecture. The use of the digital media and emerging technologies has brought a dramatic change to the design process allowing us to view, feel, and mould a virtual object at every stage of design, development, and engineering. Change is often quick and easy since a virtual product does not inherently carry the biases of its physical counterpart. In order to communicate ideas across the team, digital processes are also used to bring together opinions, experiences, and perspectives. These methods encourage decision making based on information rather than prejudice or instinct. Thus, digital exchanges (technology) impact firm strategies at three levels: product, process, and administrative or support activities (Adler 1989).Digital tools for design exchange in Industrial Design (ID) began much earlier than many other professions. The profession of Architecture is also slowly moving to a similar model with digital exchange finding increasing prevalence in drawing, modeling, performance simulation, design collaboration, construction management, and building fabrication. The biggest problem is the disintegrated use of technology in the architectural profession without a strategy toward streamlining the design process from conception to fabrication. In this paper we investigate how the use of technology has evolved in the professions of Industrial Design and Architecture comparatively in their product, process, and support activities. Further, we will present a set of guidelines that will help architects in the convergence of design process, helping in a more efficient work flow with a strategic use of digital technology.

summary “…our experience of the city, and hence our response to architecture, is almost exclusively conducted through the medium of the automobile: the car defines our space whether we are driving, being driven or avoiding being driven over. The car has been an integral part of metropolitan life for so long that it has become part of the urban fabric.” Jonathan Bell, Carchitecture. This DVD presents a series of audio/video mappings of the city in movement - an organizational condition which is derived from our car culture, a culture in movement. In these studies the digital audio/video camera, a device which allows us to explicitly record movement and change in time, is used as an investigative tool and as an extension of our bodies in order to observe, capture and measure otherwise imperceptible moments of our moving and fast paced experience of place. The projects are from a seminar/studio entitled A/V Mappings and Notations. This research looks at the merging of moving image and more conventional drawing to create maps which read physical and ephemeral conditions of place in an experiential and analytical manner. The importance of The Car as an A/V Apparatus studies is that they allow us to uncover characteristics of place that are particular to the infrastructure of our car cities and most importantly to the experience of inhabiting the transitory spaces of these cities in movement. The projects which will be presented extend the human body into the city via the car as an audio/video apparatus, an instrument for reading and measuring the city in movement. The documents are choreographed as sections through the city in which the section cut (the line drawn) is the trajectory of driving/drawing. In the making of these full-scale life size drawings, cameras are mounted to the car prior to driving. The location(s) of camera(s) are determined by the specifics of each investigation. What is choreographed is the set up of the car as an audio/video apparatus and of the trajectory of driving. The apparatus itself, the body/car/camera, in its trajectory captures, studies, measures, draws/drives. This as an extension of the human body allows us to detach ourselves from the dominance of our vision and to more objectively discover aspects of place as related to our movement and corporeal experience and otherwise hidden from our perception. In addition and more importantly as body/car/camera, the apparatus captures the city at the scale of driving (corpor/car) a scale which expands our body into the scale of a larger space of great distances, movements, speeds, and durations. The discoveries that these mappings reveal inform us of the potential for more specifically intervening in these cities with proposals which engage these two drastically different yet intricately connected scales. summary Architecture, spaces, cities… are not static but rather dynamic and ever changing entities. The city, which is composed of activities, interactions, patterns of use, changes, is dynamic and temporal. As James Corner states in The Agency of Mapping: Speculation, Critique and Invention; “The experiences of space cannot be separated from the events that happen in it” (1). Mapping practices, which have evolved from the experiential to the pictorial to the mathematical and abstract, more often have failed to combine these various important aspects which describe a place. Michel de Certeau in Walking the City argues that the plan-like image of a city as seen from above is nothing else but a “viewpoint… a picture, whose condition of possibility is an oblivion and a misunderstanding of practices”. He argues for the experience of wandering through the city as a “process of appropriation of the topographical system” (2). In my work and the work of my students, the audio/video camera has been employed as a medium with which to combine the various characteristics that make up place. It has been important to be both immersed as well as removed, to be both realistic and abstract, to be picturesque and analytical. In addition, we have experimented with the merging of two vocabularies: that of architectural drawing and that of moving image as a way to rediscover both vocabularies and as a way to achieve readings of place that are both qualitative and quantitative. In this essay, various mappings and notations of cities done through the exploitation of the audio/video camera as a mapping medium will be introduced.

title Computational Derivation of Incident Irradiance on Building Facades based on Measured Global Horizontal Irradiance Data

summary Reliable simulation of buildings' energy performance requires, amongst other things, the availability of detailed information on the magnitudes of incident solar radiation on building facades. However, the availability of the measured data concerning the incident solar radiation on vertical surfaces is restricted to only few locations. In addition, concurrent measurements of horizontal global and horizontal diffuse (or direct normal) irradiance data are likewise available only for a limited number of locations. In contrast, global horizontal irradiance data is available for many locations. This research demonstrates how to computationally derive incident irradiance values on vertical (or otherwise inclined) building surfaces from measured globalirradiance values. Given this context, three methods are considered to compute incident vertical irradiance values based on measured global horizontal irradiance data. Vertical solar irradiance measurements are described. Then, the computationally derived values are compared withcorresponding measurements. The results are evaluated based on their correlation coefficients and relative error. Finally, the application of horizontal-to- vertical irradiance mapping is demonstrated using the case of an office building at Vienna University of Technology.

summary The paper describes a process where digital measuring survey data is transferred into 3D building model to be used as a foundation for renovation design. The process and method is tested in a case study of an office building of 8 floors. Measuring survey data is more often documented to 2D plan drawings, whereas 3D-modelling was more preferable in the case project. The final aim of the case project is to further test building product model or building information model (BIM) based design methods in building renovation. Product modelling is one emerging framework to manage building related information in contemporary design & construction. Model based methods are more commonly used in new buildings, whereas renovation is usually done with more traditional techniques. Case project results underline the importance of measuring and modelling definition phase. Measuring and documenting objectives for 3D-model based design work are different than for traditional design work. Measuring survey has to be done under the coordination of the designer participants. Selecting and informing the proper and capable surveying partners is also important.

title User Control Actions in Buildings: A Case Study of Shading

summary This thesis describes the results of a research to find out how users interact with shading and lighting devices in an office building in Vienna, Austria. The aim of the research is to explore the parameters that lead occupants to change shade positions. For this purpose, changes in shading on the southwest and north façades of the building were observed by capturing images of the whole façade. Weather conditions were registered by the weather station mounted on the top of the building. Inside the building, 15 rooms on the southwest façade and 14 rooms on the north façade were selected. Users’ operation of lighting was captured in each room. Data over a period of twelve months was collected and analyzed. The relationship between users’ behavior and environmental parameters was studied. The potential for energy saving through the use of occupancy sensors was explored.

summary Recent developments in digital technologies and smart materials have created new opportunities and are suggesting significant changes in the way we design and build architecture. Traditionally, however, there has always been a gap between the new technologies and their applications into other areas. Even though, most technological innovations hold the promise to transform the building industry and the architecture within, and although, there have been some limited attempts in this area recently; to date architecture has failed to utilize the vast amount of accumulated technological knowledge and innovations to significantly transform the industry. Consequently, the applications of new technologies to architecture remain remote and inadequate. One of the main reasons of this problem is economical. Architecture is still seen and operated as a sub-service to the Construction industry and it does not seem to be feasible to apply recent innovations in Building Technology area. Another reason lies at the heart of architectural education. Architectural education does not follow technological innovations (Watson 1997), and that “design and technology issues are trivialized by their segregation from one another” (Fernandez 2004). The final reason is practicality and this one is partially related to the previous reasons. The history of architecture is full of visions for revolutionizing building technology, ideas that failed to achieve commercial practicality. Although, there have been some adaptations in this area recently, the improvements in architecture reflect only incremental progress, not the significant discoveries needed to transform the industry. However, architectural innovations and movements have often been generated by the advances of building materials, such as the impact of steel in the last and reinforced concrete in this century. There have been some scattered attempts of the creation of new materials and systems but currently they are mainly used for limited remote applications and mostly for aesthetic purposes. We believe a new architectural material class is needed which will merge digital and material technologies, embedded in architectural spaces and play a significant role in the way we use and experience architecture. As a principle element of architecture, technology has allowed for the wall to become an increasingly dynamic component of the built environment. The traditional connotations and objectives related to the wall are being redefined: static becomes fluid, opaque becomes transparent, barrier becomes filter and boundary becomes borderless. Combining smart materials, intelligent systems, engineering, and art can create a component that does not just support and define but significantly enhances the architectural space. This paper presents an ongoing research project about the development of new class of architectural wall system by incorporating distributed sensors and macroelectronics directly into the building environment. This type of composite, which is a representative example of an even broader class of smart architectural material, has the potential to change the design and function of an architectural structure or living environment. As of today, this kind of composite does not exist. Once completed, this will be the first technology on its own. We believe this study will lay the fundamental groundwork for a new paradigm in surface engineering that may be of considerable significance in architecture, building and construction industry, and materials science.

summary The paper describes a novel approach involving interoperability, data modeling technology, and application of the building information model (BIM) focused on sustainable architecture. They share relationships and multiple experiences that have existed for years but have never have been proven. This interoperability of building performance simulation maps building information and parametric models with energy simulation models, establishing a seamless link between Computer Aided Design (CAD) and energy performance simulation software. During the last four decades, building designers have utilized information and communication technologies to create environmental representations to communicate spatial concepts or designs and to enhance spaces. Most architectural firms still rely on hand labor, drafted drawings, construction documents, specifications, schedules and work plans in traditional means. 3D modeling has been used primarily as a rendering tool, not as the actual representation of the project.With this innovative digitally exchange technology, architects and building designers can visually analyze dynamic building energy performance in response to changes of climate and building parameters. This software interoperability provides full data exchange bidirectional capabilities, which significantly reduces time and effort in energy simulation and data regeneration. Data mapping and exchange are key requirements for building more powerful energy simulations. An effective data model is the bidirectional nucleus of a well-designed relational database, critical in making good choices in selecting design parameters and in gaining and expanding a comprehensive understanding of existing data flows throughout the simulation process, making data systems for simulation more powerful, which has never been done before. Despite the variety of energy simulation applications in the lifecycle of building design and construction projects, there is a need for a system of data integration to allow seamless sharing and bidirectional reuse of data.

summary The experiments presented in this paper are situated at the crossroads of two fields: the understanding and communication of history to students and the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). More specifically, we aim to propose to students, ways of transferring information about lifestyles and techniques linked to the construction methods used in the past and which are present in ancient sites. It is not merely a question of proposing experiments for managing an inventory of knowledge such as that summarized in historical texts, but rather a means for understanding it: How do we communicate the invisible? How do we make visible what we cannot see but that we can imagine lies beneath the ruins of ancient sites? Lastly, how do we propose new approaches in the transferring of these historic skills and lifestyles? Such are the questions that the students’ experiments will attempt to answer while using computers as cognitive tools. In this case, these cognitive tools are designated as “multilayer prototypes” which aim to develop a dynamic virtual history space through augmented reality.

summary DYNAMO (Dynamic Architectural Memory Online) is an interactive platform to share ideas, knowledge and insights in the form of concrete building projects among designers in different contexts and at different levels of expertise. Interaction with various user groups revealed two major thresholds: submitting project material to the platform takes time, effort, and specific skills; in addition, designers tend to sense a psychological threshold to share their ideas and insights with others. In response to this ‘free-ridership’, the paper proposes to conceive DYNAMO as an associative network of projects, and develops ideas about how the links in this network can be determined and updated by exploiting insights implicitly available in project documentation and user (inter)actions. This should allow DYNAMO to learn from the insights of all designers using the platform, active contributors and ‘free-riders’ alike, without any awareness on their side and to apply these insights to continuously enhance its performance.

summary Since 2006, half of the world’s population lives in cities. In the age of climate change, designing for quality environmental living conditions and sustainability is a topical concern. However, on the one hand, designers and city planners operate with their three dimensional city morphological data such as building shapes and volumes, forms and their spacings, and functional attributes and definition signatures. On the other hand, urban climatologists operate with their numbers and equations, quantities and signals, and normals and anomalies. Traditionally the two camps do not meet. It is a challenge to develop design tools that they can work together. Map based information system based on computational geographic information system (GIS) that is properly structured and represented offers a common language, so to speak, for the two professional groups to work together. Urban climatic map is a spatial and graphical tool with information embedded in defined layers that are collated so that planners and urban climatologists can dialogue over design issues. With various planning and meteorological data coded in defined grid resolutions onto the GIS map system, data can be synergized and collated for various understandings. This papers explains the formulation of Hong Kong’s GIS based Urban Climatic Map as an example of how the map works in practice. Using the map, zonal and district based planning decisions can be made by planners and urban climatologists that lead to new designs and policy changes.

summary This paper describes the integration of machine intelligence into an immersive architectural sculpture that interacts dynamically with users and the environment. The system is conceived to function as an architectural envelope that might transfer air using a distributed array of components. The sculpture includes a large array of interconnected miniature structural and kinetic elements, each with local sensing, actuation, and machine intelligence. We demonstrate a model in which these autonomous, interconnected agents develop cooperative behaviour to maximize airflow. Agents have access to sensory data about their local environment and ‘learn’ to move air through the working of a genetic algorithm. Introducing distributed and responsive machine intelligence builds on work done on evolving embodied intelligence (Floreano et al. 2004) and architectural ‘geotextile’ sculptures by Philip Beesley and collaborators (Beesley et al. 1996-2006). The paper contributes to the general field of interactive art by demonstrating an application of machine intelligence as a design method. The objective is the development of coherent distributed kinetic building envelopes with environmental control functions. A cultural context is included, discussing dynamic paradigms in responsive architecture.

title An Approach to 3D Conceptual Modelling

summary This article presents a 3D user interface required by the development of conceptual modeling. This 3D user interface provides a new structure for solving the problems of difficult interface operations and complicated commands due to the application of CAD 2D interface for controlling 3D environment. The 3D user interface integrates the controlling actions of “seeing – moving –seeing” while designers are operating CAD (Schön and Wiggins, 1992). Simple gestures are used to control the operations instead. The interface also provides a spatial positioning method which helps designers to eliminate the commands of converting a coordinate axis. The study aims to discuss the provision of more intuitively interactive control through CAD so as to fulfil the needs of designers. In our practices and experiments, a pair of LED gloves equipped with two CCD cameras for capturing is used to sense the motions of hands and positions in 3D. In addition, circuit design is applied to convert the motions of hands including selecting, browsing, zoom in / zoom out and rotating to LED switches in different colours so as to identify images.

summary As to the Russian word “dvizhenije” two almost equal English words - “movement” and “motion” correspond, we had to decide, which approaches our message better. As a result we have chosen “movement”, as in the interpretation of our dictionaries this word reflects its philosophical essence more. In philosophical treatment the movement is a general concept uniting characteristics of moving, made by objects, interactions between them, changes which take place between them, transformations of some objects into other ones. There are forms of movement in which objects change their positions, but do not change themselves, and such forms in which there are quantitative and qualitative changes in objects. Aristotle writes about six kinds of movement: appearance, destruction, increase, reduction, transformation, relocation. If at first the movement was examined for a long time only as movement of bodies, many years later ideas enlarged and in the foreground there appeared such versions of movement, as becoming, change and development. Proceeding from these basic concepts we have tried to analsze briefly the role of movement as some necessary element of realisation in architectural education.

summary In my work and the work of my students, the audio/video camera has been employed as a medium with which to combine the various characteristics that make up place. It has been important to be both immersed as well as removed, to be both realistic and abstract, to be picturesque and analytical. In addition, we have experimented with the merging of two vocabularies: that of architectural drawing and that of moving image as a way to rediscover both vocabularies and as a way to achieve readings of place that are both qualitative and quantitative. In this essay, various mappings and notations of cities done through the exploitation of the audio/video camera as a mapping medium will be introduced.

summary The goal of this paper is to analyze the notion of a hybrid space, to explore the necessity of adopting this term as a characteristic of space, and to question whether it is time to move beyond its use. The term, hybrid, originating in biology, describes the offspring of two different species. For the past two decades, Hybridity has found a wide application within social sciences, including architecture. In general, Hybridity occurs when two separate entities come together to form a third. In the context of architecture, a hybrid space is one in which the advent of technology allows us to experience multiple spaces simultaneously. We understand Hybridity to be a conceptual construct that is useful in explaining new phenomenon. This begs the question, what is the new phenomenon. In the case of space, it is the aforementioned advent of technology. This is not, however, the first time space has been expanded by technology. Throughout history, our ability to understand stand space has been extended by the advent of new technology. Perhaps, a hybrid space is not defined by technology after all. The ultimate goal of this paper is to define the moment at which Hybridity ceases to be useful, assuming that such a moment even exists. Though it has been helpful in understand space in new ways, allowing new insights into space, for many spaces this term can reach the end of its usefulness. The moment at which this occurs is dependant on a few factors. The first is one of adoption. Once a hybrid space is commonplace, is it strictly necessary to consider it a hybrid any longer? The second factor is the polymorphism of hybrid spaces. The phrase hybrid space does not describe a single form of space. Instead, a hybrid space can be one of a plethora of spaces. Finally, the issues of category and identity may help define this moment. If Hybridity relies on categories and instances between categories, then this suggests that a change in perspective may destroy the category of the hybrid. Perspective is directly tied to the specific identity of the viewer and that viewer’s experiences.
