title Archinet-MetaUniversity: Alfa Project phase3: The transversal integration [Archinet-MetaUniversidad: Proyecto ALFA en Fase3: La integración transversal]
source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 131-134
summary This paper presents the results of a workshop which took place in Rio de Janeiro and gathered Brazilian and international exchange students with tutors from eight universities located in Latin America and Europe. The design process highlighted the advantages and limitations of the communication between the tutors, educated with traditional tools and students who enter at the university already familiar with digital tools. The manipulation of images assumes a primary position, particularly in an environment based on several foreign languages. However, this process also exposed the limitations of images to represent the essence of the place.

title Architectural eLearning: An inquiry into the fuzzy boundaries that separate education and instruction [Architectural eLearning. Una indagación sobre los límites borrosos que separan la educación y la instrucción]
source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 155-158
summary This communication is based on the development of a new subject to be imparted in collaboration with three Departments (Visual Communication, Projects and Construction) at the School of Architecture of Barcelona. It is a work that has been financed with a special grant from our university, aimed at the development of new teaching modalities and, in particular, of those that would develop the use of new technologies, collaboration among university departments and eLearning. The aim of the communication is twofold. First, to present some results that we consider valuable in themselves, as much for the techniques as for the methodology that we have used. Second, to propitiate a debate on the new situation that the teaching of architecture is moving to, due to the advance of a series of instruction methods where the methodological organization, the storing of informative material and the preparation of autonomous interactive systems, open more and more effective roads of learning but that, at the same time, point towards a new educational structure that fits badly within the traditional structures in which we have still to work daily. Regarding the first point, the main aspects to highlight are: a) the development of a selflearning system by means of a very complete series of tutorials that allow a gradual acquisition, depending on the necessities or interests of each student, of geometric modeling, parametric design, visual simulation and interactive animation techniques, b) the development of a system of general information supply and on line comments and corrections. Regarding the second point, a provisional theoretical framework has been elaborated based on the consideration of the ubiquitous visual communication media as misleading mediators of a personal relationship. This theoretical frame has been tested by a few experiences carried out with the collaboration of students implied in the project. The general conclusion is that both challenges must be faced at the same time: new educational technologies must be analysed and integrated in our curricula and a new theoretical framework, able to clarify the difference between instruction and education, must be developed in parallel with those technologies.

title Digitizing Heritage or reconstructing Imagination [Digitalizando la herencia o reconstruyendo la imaginación]
source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 48-53
summary To advance the theme of digital conservation of heritage and tie it to museums, we report on two case studies of digitising archaeological sites; the first is the remains of a typical Scottish Crannog typical of the sixth-century BC., and the second is a UNESCO protected site in the Middle East (the desert castle of Qusayr Amra, Jordan), which dates back to early 8th century. Then we relate both to our investigation into embodiment, interaction and metaphor in virtual environments.

title Digital Photogrammetric Restitution of the Pelourinho’s Façades, in Salvador - Bahia, Brazil [Restituição fotogramétrica digital das fachadas do pelourinho, Salvador – Bahia, Brasil]
source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 375-379
summary Brazil has so many historical cities with important architectural heritage. Some of them are remains of the colonial times and aggregate beautiful buildings such as, palaces, public buildings and churches in baroque style, legacy of the Portuguese colonization. Despite of its cultural value, most of these building sets are under several kinds of threats. This paper discusses about the experience on digital photogrammetric restitution of the building façades of Pelourinho, a neighborhood in the historical center of Salvador, the capital city of the State of Bahia. The architectural documentation is an important way to preserve and safeguard its memory, besides being an effective educational process about the meaning of preservation and cultural heritage.

title The intellectual property in digital interfaces and environments: The noncopyright option in the case of IDA system [A propriedade intelectual em ambientes e interfaces digitais: A opção pelo noncopyright no caso do sistema IDA]
source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 463-466
summary This paper presents the discussions on intellectual property regarding digital interfaces, which were crucial for MOM/LOW (Living in Other Ways) to develop the system IDA (Digital interface for supporting housing production). It introduces IDA and its conceptual framework and differentiates intellectual property and authorship. Then, it examines the arguments for copyright, indicating them as myths or disguises of other intentions. This leads to examining some anti-copyright movements concluding that they follow the same logic of register. Thus, noncopyright (no license or register) seems to be the best means to protest against the current logic as also for conveying information.

title Technological language x scientific language: Structuring educational speeches for the area of digital graphics [Lenguaje tecnológico vs. lenguaje científico: Estructurando discursos educacionales para la gráfica digital]
source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 141-145
summary This work looks to contribute to the structuring of educational speeches able to promote the use of the virtual space like laboratory for the simulation of the phenomenon of interaction between light and matter in different levels of similarity with the reality. The computer resources available for that present a technological specific language, mixing proceedings heuristics and physical. This demands of the students a detailed control of parameters, which need to be recognized and associated to the scientific knowledge. You being adopted “concept maps”, like strategy of attendance of processes of teaching / apprenticeship, these associations are set out, supplying sufficient elements to prepare, to revise and to enlarge the speeches open to question.

source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 135-140
summary Through the creation of an inter-text of different discursive levels, although for “natives as for digital immigrants”, it has developed a teaching experience in three Latin American scenarios (Chile, Argentina, Brasil), through two pedagogical modalities: international videoconferences and in person practical workshops. The videoconferences facilitated the general theoretical discussion, stating multiples contents, anticipating and framing the later activity of the in person workshop, and returning in discussions and critical insights at the end of each workshop. In the in person workshops, new design strategies of generation of spaces and surfaces were entered upon, through analog-digital resources of ideation and representation.

title Three dimensional isovist analysis method [Método de Análisis Tridimensional con isovistas]
source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 174-176
summary This paper presents a three dimensional method of isovist analysis implemented in the MaxScript programming language. The script accepts as its input a standard three dimensional model of the buildings and terrain being analyzed, upon which a N×N grid is projected. Each square of this grid is assigned a height value, thereby producing a simplified surface description which is amenable to mathematical analysis. A three dimensional isovist is then generated for each grid square, by placing an observation point 1.5 meters above its center and finding the intersection of a series of rays from this point to the input model. The distance from the observation point to the intersection is summed over for all the angles studied giving a compound isovist measurement for the grid square under consideration.

source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 253-256
summary Architects have always wanted to visually simulate internal space before beginning construction. Visualizations through the use of synthetics images, static scenes or animations, are a powerful tool which can contribute to understanding and therefore improve architectural proposals for better environment comfort, and energy efficiency. Real time interactive visualization of changes proposed by the architect during the design is a valuable resource, particularly during the initial phases. However, this type of real-time interactive visualization requires considerable computing power, which places restraints and reduces interactivity.

source SIGraDi 2007 - [Proceedings of the 11th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] México D.F. - México 23-25 October 2007, pp. 270-274
summary Nowadays construction of industrial buildings has been intensively automated using numeric-control machines, with lower costs and shorter ranges of production, but these advantages have not been transferred to general architecture. In order to promote architectural alternatives, this paper identified digital modeling techniques targeted to automated constructive systems. The procedures defined are cutting boards, folded volumes, diverse repetition, shipped solids, subtractive mass, volumetric meshes and curved frames, besides a general procedure of development. These techniques demonstrated a closer relationship between design and material execution, and suggest innovative and efficient building possibilities.
