title Spatial Cypin: Smart Interface Design for Context Awareness and Event Reminding
source CAADRIA 2007 [Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia] Nanjing (China) 19-21 April 2007
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2007.x.c6j
summary The emergence of ubiquitous computing and smart technologies become the impetus for novel spatial design in the information era. Smart living interface becomes important for usercentric spatial design. This paper depicts the research framework and demonstrates the design concept “Spatial Cypin” as a metaphor of smart living interface in a ubiquitous computing environment that reminds users of events. “Mind Garden” is created as a test-bed for representing the memory landscape. The prototype and findings are reported.

title Co-operation and Complicity Voices, Robots, and Tricksters in the Digital Marketplace
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 5 - no. 1, pp. 162-175
summary We advocate the theme of complicity, ahead of co-operation, as a means of understanding complex, interactive digital systems. Our case study of a market precinct known as the Barras, about one mile from the centre of the city of Glasgow, foregrounds the notion of complicity. Market places are characterized not only by co-operation in rule-governed environments, but complicity between actors as a means of breaking rules, working at the boundaries of formal frameworks, avoiding other actors, such as law enforcers, and even working with them in tacitly agreed evasion strategies. We present the human voice (as exercised in the case of market stall holders drawing attention to their wares) as a major medium of complicity. In our application of these ideas we deploy Lego Mindstorms TM RCX robot processing to explore interactions between a mobile sensing robot and simple environmental controls: movements of sliding screens in response to an autonomous mobile sensor. As well as their benign characteristics as co-operating agents, we argue for a consideration of robots as quintessential tricksters, plotting and scheming strategies of survival, evasion and opportunism. Traits that can be employed in the development of useful augmented environments.

title The Role of Higher Education in nD Modelling Implementation
source Constructing the Future: nD modelling, Ghassan Aouad, Angela Lee, Song Wu, Taylor & Francis Books Ltd, pp. 309-325 2007
summary University education is no stranger to change, but the rapid development of today’s information technology (IT) is posing great challenges to academics who have to consider its appropriate integration into carefully designed curricula to meet the expectation of students and the requirements of industry. A more widespread acceptance of 3D modelling within organizations is seen as a significant milestone in advancing the adoption of nD modelling technology and furthering the vision for a single integrated project model shared by the key participants in the design and construction process.

title The development of an augmented reality-based user interface to support maintenance fieldwork
source Em‘body’ing Virtual Architecture: The Third International Conference of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2007), 28-30 November 2007, Alexandria, Egypt, pp. 35-42
summary This paper discusses computational support for the maintenance of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems to more effectively use maintenance information. A common cause of inefficient and ineffective maintenance has been the difficulty in getting reliable, just-in-time information for in-situ maintenance work. To reduce this inefficiency in the maintenance environment, accessibility and accuracy of maintenance information must be improved. Our approach, therefore, is the development of a user interface that will produce superimposed computer graphics of equipment/facility-specific maintenance information onto a live video stream on portable computing devices, such as laptops and PDAs. This paper concentrates on elicitation of primary functions needed to support various maintenance activities as well as a prototype application being developed for the approach.

title Plan_B: The architectonics of sonic information
source Em‘body’ing Virtual Architecture: The Third International Conference of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2007), 28-30 November 2007, Alexandria, Egypt, pp. 587-594
summary The paper addresses the influence of digital technology on architectural design and production, particularly considering the possibilities of sound for the design and conception of architecture based on the dynamic condition, which is present in the “everyday” and its permutations. The day-to-day condition is regarded as a highly dynamic flux of economic, social and political aspects and conceptually linked to sound and musical variation as guiding design principles, to actually retain and reflect the vitality of every day’s measure. We have traced precedents and cases in sound reproduction and its implications on the codification of architecture and have created a digital design tool in Max/MSP. The primary objective of the tool is to produce the corollary between sound reproduction and the conception and production of an architectonic codification, and ultimately to propose a strategy of architectural construct that has given way from the clarity of static geometry to the complexity in dynamic variability, that of dissonance. Virtual architecture and its techniques are considered to express and implement such permutations and induce a measure of change in every step and direction of the design process. The application of digital technology is regarded as the intervening of “apparatus” and to represent a different approach in relation to the prevailing regime.

title Personal Assistant: Autonomous Agents Base on Multi-Agent System among Different Industrial Design Stakeholders
source CAADRIA 2007 [Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia] Nanjing (China) 19-21 April 2007
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2007.x.f2e
summary To deal with complex communication problems, requires both a web-based collaborative system and a multi-agent system (MAS) integrated with knowledge management architecture. Agents have been acknowledged as a promising approach through the metaphor that an agent can act as a personal assistant. In this paper we proposes an approach to develop personal assistant agents, each of which can represent a different stakeholder and load different domain knowledge inside. To demonstrate our proposed concepts, we focus on a prototype system for notebook design for the company ASUS, a leading notebook manufacturer based in Taiwan.

title Fuzzy-Based Direct Manipulation: Focused on User Participation in Apartment Plan Design Process
source CAADRIA 2007 [Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia] Nanjing (China) 19-21 April 2007
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2007.x.c0b
summary Physically-based manipulation can be recognized as a promising approach to implement interactive computational tools to solve the user participation problems. To support the designer’s justifications as well as to clarify the innately ambiguous expressions provided by the clients, we propose to build a fuzzy-based expert system integrated with a 3D physically based manipulation. This paper focuses on a system prototype for the client customization process in apartment plan design to exemplify our concepts.
