summary In the last decade Computational Building Performance Simulation (CBPS) has acquired the reputation of a solid analytical method. However, this reputation relies mostly on the admittedly advanced and robust theoretical and algorithmic basis of performance simulation techniques. On the practical side, building simulation has yet to live up to expectation. The main reason is that simulation use is not as widespread as it should. Applications are mostly academic, mainly validation studies. This has led us to the assumption that the applicability and usability of performance simulations require additional components that link them more closely to design processes and facilitate their integration in everyday design activities. In this paper we present the results of research into a working method for location-specific daylight simulation. Our method is based on the satisfication of a number of requirements common to many types of CBPS: validated simulation algorithms, flexible, fast calibration by means of real-world measurement, multiyear, location-specific environmental data, and support of both measured and mathematical environmental data models.

summary The actual study in IVR (Immersive Virtual Reality) proposes a path which may provide meaningful information about the user’s behaviours and difficulties to articulate in immersive worlds. Beyond it, we are searching for parameters to improve design qualities in such an architectural space. Our interest is to use IVR as a medium to research the quality of spaces in particular the atmosphere of such spaces, on the basis of people’s interest and eagerness. Therefore it is important to comprehend the special conditions of the perception and the behaviour of the user in virtual spaces. The purpose is to understand the influence of an IVR environment upon the human being and to develop motivation for a personal use of virtual space as a learning environment. The aim of the analysis was to explore behaviour patterns in a simulated IVR environment. Moving from the dynamic of space, there arises a personal “space-time-system”.

summary In any built environment, there exist certain subtle stimuli that affect the occupants’ cognitive processes and performance. This research intends to identify: (1) what environmental stimuli an office building would generate that could affect the habitants’ cognitive ability, and (2) how the habitants react to these stimuli. The goals of the study are to develop a new method for using immersive virtual reality to represent a built environment for simulating environmental impact, and to discover factors that could influence habitants’ cognitive performance in a space. It is expected that the discoveries could advance the application of virtual reality to study human cognition in architecture.

summary From previous works, we know that the distinguishing characteristics of design media cause different influence on design creativity. However, the cognitive research about the application of conceptual sketches design by integrating both conventional and digital media simultaneously is absent. In this research, we would like to discuss that can it inspire more creative works if designers use conventional and digital media simultaneously as sketching media to generate conceptual sketches. The results show that using conventional and digital media simultaneously comparing with only using individual media can help arouse creative thinking, cognitive activity and design outcome in the stage of conceptual sketches design. The findings may suggest that the integration of various design media provides one feasible ways to inspire creativity, which can apply to the design training of creativity on education and to the designer’s practical operation, but initiates more possibility of new media to assist design.

summary The goal of the research described in this paper is the formulation of a generative system for architectural design, where a structured core architectural idea is the input and alternatives to that idea are the output. Specifically we present a production pipeline of architectural / spatial configurations using the context of animation and time based design tools. Our model consists of “time” and space design constraints of boundaries / objects affecting a given architectural design, thus producing an alternative solution for every timeframe of the animation cycle. Initially the designer shapes an idea using animation software tools, where each tool is actually a constraint or a grammar rule defined informally by the user/designer. The influence of the tools can vary according to time, speed, location, configuration of the object and/or the constraint itself. In some of these animations the designer has the ability to sidestep partially the issue of emergence by providing specific key - frames for the solution to follow. The use of animation tools [shape driven curves, speed and time-line functions, parent child relationships] in the shape generation of our model empowers the user/designer to configure whole sets of shapes and designs interactively and without the need to define every solution independently. Simultaneously, a different, time-focused view of our model describes its use on designs that develop different configurations over time. Thus a duality of our model is established : the animated schema may be either a sum or a family of various designs or the animated time-line may represent a single design which changes over time. Finally the possibility of a structured graph representing each solution is discussed, where the designer can evaluate the merit of an individual solution in terms of conforming to the initial core idea or where alternative spatial configurations evolve in a different structure from the original design.

summary In this paper we track the evolution of computational design from its analog origins to its contemporary digital regime. Our long term goal is to qualify and quantify the implications of digital computation on design thinking and its influence on the architectural practice. Meanwhile, we present the results of our past few years of collaborative research in design and computation that illustrate the nature of the intellectual engagement required for appreciating the potential of digital design thinking and making. In a temporal frame, these results are expressed as a constellation of punctuated innovations emerging sporadically during the painstaking process of tackling architectural problems using digital means. In the long run, they hopefully amount to an approach to fleshing out a paradigm shift from analog to digital and building a knowledge foundation of architectural methods.

summary This paper aims at exploring the theory of the Social Logic of Space or Space Syntax as a strategy to define parameters of road hierarchy and, if this use is found possible, to establish maximum speeds allowed in the transportation system of Brasília, the capital city of Brazil. Space Syntax – a theory developed by Hillier and Hanson (1984) – incorporates the space topological relationships, considering the city shape and its influence in the distribution of movements within the space. The theory’s axiality method – used in this study – analyses the accessibility to the street network relationships, by means of the system’s integration, one of its explicative variables in terms of copresence, or potential co-existence between the through-passing movements of people and vehicles (Hillier, 1996). One of the most used concepts of Space Syntax in the integration, which represents the potential flow generation in the road axes and is the focus of this paper. It is believed there is a strong correlation between urban space-form configuration and the way flows and movements are distributed in the city, considering nodes articulations and the topological location of segments and streets in the grid (Holanda, 2002; Medeiros, 2006). For urban transportation studies, traffic-related problems are often investigated and simulated by assignment models – well-established in traffic studies. Space Syntax, on the other hand, is a tool with few applications in transport (Barros, 2006; Barros et al, 2007), an area where configurational models are considered to present inconsistencies when used in transportation (cf. Cybis et al, 1996). Although this is true in some cases, it should not be generalized. Therefore, in order to simulate and evaluate Space Syntax for the traffic approach, the city of Brasília was used as a case study. The reason for the choice was the fact the capital of Brazil is a masterpiece of modern urban design and presents a unique urban layout based on an axial grid system considering several express and arterial long roads, each one with 3 to 6 lanes,

summary Multidisciplinary efforts that have shaped the current integration of multimedia into architectural spaces have primarily been conducted by collaborative efforts among art, engineering, interaction design, informatics and software programming. These collaborations have focused on the complexities of designing for applications of multimedia in specific real world contexts. Outside a small but growing number of researchers and practitioners, architects have been largely absent from these efforts. This has resulted in projects that deal primarily with developing technologies augmenting existing architectural environments. (Greenfield and Shepard 2007)This paper examines the potential of multimedia and architecture integration to create new possibilities for architectural space. Established practices of constructing architecture suggest creating space by conventional architectural means. On the other hand, multimedia influences and their effect on the tectonics, topos and typos (Frampton 2001) of an architectural space (‘multimedia effects matrix’) suggest new modes of shaping space. It is proposed that correlations exist between those two that could inform unified design strategies. Case study analyses were conducted examining five works of interactive spaces and multimedia installation artworks, selected from an initial larger study of 25 works. Each case study investigated the means of shaping space employed, according to both conventional architectural practices and the principles of multimedia influence (in reference to the ‘multimedia effects matrix’) (James and Nagasaka 2010, 278-285). Findings from the case studies suggest strong correlations between the two approaches to spatial construction. To indicate these correlations, this paper presents five speculative integrative design strategies derived from the case studies, intended to inform future architectural design practice.

summary The paper addresses the influence of digital technology on architectural design and production, particularly considering the possibilities of sound for the design and conception of architecture based on the dynamic condition, which is present in the “everyday” and its permutations. The day-to-day condition is regarded as a highly dynamic flux of economic, social and political aspects and conceptually linked to sound and musical variation as guiding design principles, to actually retain and reflect the vitality of every day’s measure. We have traced precedents and cases in sound reproduction and its implications on the codification of architecture and have created a digital design tool in Max/MSP. The primary objective of the tool is to produce the corollary between sound reproduction and the conception and production of an architectonic codification, and ultimately to propose a strategy of architectural construct that has given way from the clarity of static geometry to the complexity in dynamic variability, that of dissonance. Virtual architecture and its techniques are considered to express and implement such permutations and induce a measure of change in every step and direction of the design process. The application of digital technology is regarded as the intervening of “apparatus” and to represent a different approach in relation to the prevailing regime.

summary Computer generated 3D forms using generative procedures have matured in the last decade and now considered as a tangible approach for realizing architectural design ideas. As fascinating as the approach might be, it is still lacking actual application in the early architectural design process. There are many reasons for this, among them: it has many implications over the architectural design process mainly the practicality of design during the conceptual design stage; it is cumbersome to develop construction drawings for complex architectural forms; and the necessity for producing conceptual designs quickly in less time as design requirements and decisions are constantly being changed. This paper initially reports on a practical development of a computer program which generates architectural massing designs based on integrating forms generation technique in a design scheme. The influence for this development was inspired by Spirolaterals technique used in generating complex 3D architectural forms that are based on parametric shape configuration. The development has three goals: to review the principles for constructing generative forms in the conceptual design stage using simple CAD tools, to assist in the production of design schemes based on a few basic shapes and rules, and to explore 3D forms finding and generation without the need to write a complicated computer program that are difficult to produce by hand. The development resulted in generating an interesting number of 3D compositions. The author applied this technique to experiment during the production of a design scheme. The paper hence describes the current development of ArchiGen tool to produces generative 3D forms utilizing ArchiCAD © GDL programming language. The tool is embedded within ArchiCAD for generating 3D shapes. One of the main features of this implementation is that users are able to sketch 2D shapes and the tool will deform its three dimensional generation. Moreover, the user being able to abstract the architectural character from the resulting complex 3D shapes. This development extends current related work by allowing the designer to load shapes into ArchiGen which acts as vocabulary of shapes for a design scheme constraints. It is intended from this work to inspire future work focusing on using generative tools in the early conceptual design stages.

summary This paper reports on the findings of an empirical investigation into the impact of different media on design methodology. The statistical sample included 49 fourth year architecture students, divided into three groups: the drawing group, the physical model group and the computer group. They were given a problem of designing a façade in an urban context in Glasgow over a two week period. The design process of each group was monitored over that period through observations, recordings and attitude measurement via a questionnaire survey. The results were analysed using the Statistical Programme for Social Sciences (SPSS). The dendrograms from cluster analysis revealed that there were well established perceptual dimensions, or clusters, for the façade’s design variables within the three groups because of using different media. The impact of media on design creativity, both as a process and a product, was investigated. All three media types yielded a positive correlation between ‘media made design decisions more creative’ and ‘media made design scheme more creative’- with a correlation coefficient of 0.708 which was significant at the 0.01 level, p<0.05.

summary The paper describes the mergence of traditional architectural design processes with approaches that rely on digital media and software for the creation of architectural space. The depicted projects are part of a ‘work in progress’ process, with a recent studio that is set up to apply the so far accumulated experiences. Within the projects, focus is on those design phases where the applied media and methodology is changed and where the back and forth between different media and the depth of their implementation is perceptible in, and / or has a significant influence on the design itself. Through a line of successive experiments, the paper explains the development of a possible method that utilizes a variety of today’s accessible tools in architecture, making use of phenomena that appear when changing from one tool to another. Goal is to avoid limitations that are existent by the solely employment of one media or method, and to understand the fusion between different media as an inspiring momentum to develop the design further. The paper draws a line from an initially experienced and analyzed design method over several projects in practice and academia to conclude with a possible design method that could be established successfully in both fields of architectural teaching and practice. Initial experiences had been drawn from professional practice, in which the digital realm was limited to a support device of the design process. The first project that is described in the paper, explored the employment of digital media as a possible tool to drive the design process in a broader sense. The studio setting was organized as a laboratory for the exploration of the change of applied media. Focus was on the influence on the design progress. The design method required of the studios participants was not exclusively based on an architectural program, but on an initial, very conceptual process with an artistic approach, based on personal experiences of each participant. This was meant to detach the students entirely from architectural processes and mindsets they had picked up so far. Parallel to that kind of an intellectual process, studio participants learned to handle Maya as the 3D modeling software of their choice. Both the technical knowledge and the artistic projects were merged in a second project phase, in which participants had to further develop their work by applying a very effective mix of various design tools. Using digital media as a parametric design generator, subsequent projects were developed. The task for the designers here were to decide what kind of algorithm could be applied to which process and when it was to be stopped for the best result. Applying such an automatism successfully to the design process, the employment of traditional media and methodology remained, to adapt the digital driven schemes to the required design task. The diverse design experiments demonstrate important aspects when merging complex design and animation software with traditional design processes. To achieve good architectural design results, all examined projects showed that traditional design methods with its physical models are hardly replaceable to its full extent by other media, but digital media are able to strengthen design processes and invite designers to explore new means of design work.

summary This paper considers the influence of digital fabrication (CAM) technologies with regards to the creative and creating processes and within the specific parameters of materials. Under the title seamless architecture this paper is seeking to study relationships (on a literal and conceptual level) with the existence or not in architecture of ‘seams’. This study draws inspiration from past and present architecture and also design fields such as textile and sailmaking, by examining types of ‘seamless envelopes’ which were only possible when advances in digital fabrication were met. Metal is currently widely used as cladding material. In antithesis to previous notions of steel being the ‘bones’ of architecture, expressing ‘strength’ and ‘sturdiness’, current use of metal as ‘skin’ material has revealed the ‘softer’, highly sculptural, almost textile quality of metal surfaces. Digital fabrication of sheet metals has contributed towards this shift. However, architectural metal skins presently lack this seamless quality of a ‘differentiated-single’ object. It’s capabilities as cladding material have not been fully utilized, in light of drastic developments in digital manufacturing. Design integration of aesthetic, structural and environmental considerations into the design of metal cladding systems is bound to develop in the future. Considering metals as textiles (in terms of architectural concept and manufacturing) can provide new insights to their utilization in architecture.

summary The quality and availability of exterior paints has led to a new vernacular use of colour in Ireland and Scotland. Communal colour designs highlight the conflict between individual colour preference and the community desire for harmony. This is often expressed as a fixed colour design by an individual designer. The provision of the widest possible range of colour designs, all of which express communal harmony, can help to accommodate individual preferences. This project uses computation to apply colour harmony rules within a chosen environment and to generate all the possible colour combinations which conform to these rules. The Colour Combinations program uses two steps to establish a colour design: palette selection and colour combination. The harmony rules can be adjusted for each step depending on the context for the design or the type of colour combination required. Once an appropriate palette has been selected all possible colour combinations for a terrace of six houses are generated. Each combination is then tested for harmony and the number of combinations which conform to the specified rules is displayed. Each harmonious combination can then be displayed in turn for manual selection. The program allows the effects of adjusted harmony rules to be tested and examined quickly. This could allow individual colour preferences to be accommodated within a communal colour design.

summary The paper presents speculative avenues for constructing 3-D ice models at various scales using traditional fabricating methods and modern CNC and rapid-prototyping techniques. Canada has a long history of using ice and snow for the construction of houses (igloo), ice palaces, and ice roads, in some cases dating back thousands of years. These techniques will be reviewed and evaluated for their suitability in modern uses. Computer-driven ice imaging and production methods present many opportunities and challenges. On the software side, we will speculate on how to use parametric software for form-finding; on the hardware side, we will reflect on how to translate these models into task planning for ice-building machines. Initially, these machines will be off-the-shelf robots and rapid prototyping machines, but we envision using specially constructed “cold irons,” “re-icing” robots, and automatic “ice bricklaying” machines. Vapour deposition on a substrate is envisioned as well. An overview of the design and adaptation of water delivery systems, through drip or spray nozzles, as well as methods of cooling water through natural or artificial means will be given. The role of additives (for colour and / or strength) will be outlined.

title Simulating the Atmosphere of Spaces

summary At present more than half of all building activity in the German building sector is undertaken within existing built contexts. Work in existing building fabric is an essential aspect of most architects’ activities. The development of a conceptual and technological basis for the digital support of design directly on site, in and with the available architecture is the main focus of the research project “Spatial Augmented Reality for Architecture”. This article describes one part of the research project: the sampling of colours and materials at a scale of 1:1 using Augmented Reality technologies. This makes it possible to project the colour and material qualities of a design directly onto any surface within an existing building, geometrically corrected. A first software prototype SAR-CA has been developed and then assessed using a user study to obtain a first evaluation of the prototype to determine the direction of future research. Future research areas are discussed at the end of the paper.

summary Architects have always wanted to visually simulate internal space before beginning construction. Visualizations through the use of synthetics images, static scenes or animations, are a powerful tool which can contribute to understanding and therefore improve architectural proposals for better environment comfort, and energy efficiency. Real time interactive visualization of changes proposed by the architect during the design is a valuable resource, particularly during the initial phases. However, this type of real-time interactive visualization requires considerable computing power, which places restraints and reduces interactivity.

title A Study of Light/Darkness in Sacred Settings: Digital Simulations

summary Studying light/darkness and sacred architecture reveals that the "holy" light dramatizes the spiritual state and affects the mood of the user in the sacred space. Furthermore, it shows that faith dictates the treatment of light/darkness in the sacred setting as means to enhance the spiritual experience. These two premises were investigated by conducting digital daylight simulations on the Brihadeshvara Hindu Temple (1010 AD) of Tanjore, Tamilnadu, India. This sacred monument, listed as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites, is an intriguing case study since the treatment of the 'holy light' in the temple is actually the treatment of the 'holy darkness'. The simulated values were compared to the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) standards. The results demonstrate that digitized simulations can illustrate the significance of light/darkness in sacred settings as a spiritual experience. Moreover, this quantitative investigation can augment the qualitative studies in the field of historic sacred architecture. The work presented here unites and extends some previously published work.

summary The “digital chain” is a continuous digital organization process, from the draft right into the manufacturing. Now one of these chains is applied on a mountain shelter. The individual steps are programmed and connected by universal interfaces. The computer is used not as passive digital drawing board, but as self-dependent tool that exerts influence on. Rules, dependence and aims, are formulated by the architect the computer can optimize due to its computing power. The role of the architect shifts thereby from the form designer to the role of a process designer. The aesthetics of the results is exciting and unusually, organically and self-evident - it is however always the result of given parameters. One topic is the complexity. The constructional modeling of the computers is a substantial support and easement. With programming techniques and parameterized construction, a high degree of individualizing becomes possible. A further point is efficiency. Construction with individual units, which former on was just realizable with high time and cost, become economically in this manner today. Furthermore computer-controlled machines work with precision and a detailing, which would be by workmanship neither temporally nor technically obtainable.
