summary This paper presents a novel approach to digital investigation of body, space, form and motion to expose issues of spatial perception. The spatial experience as generated from, and translated by, the human body is the focus of this work. The work explores the representational value of the body’s sense-image, the context and spatial/visual literacy of the learned sense of space-time generated from the study of the human body. Here the body is conceived not just in space but also in time, affording the ability to reinterpret the body and it’s dynamic motion engaged not as a static condition, but as a set of event spaces. Motion here is defined as a multiplicity of continuities that can be subdivided by artificial boundaries that describe space, time and body. The study of a series of bodies and movements is described that explore the human condition as a series of differential lines (form + time) and framed structures (bodies + motion). The intention is to examine the relationship between human form and metaphysical simultaneity as generators of architectural form. The work is structured by a research approach that dissects and isolates the representational concept/image from the body in a way that might offer an alternative description to the traditional historic models.

summary The research paper exemplifies upon an attempt to create a co-evolving (socio-cultural and technological) programmable spatiality with a strong underpinning in the domain of computation, interaction design and open system typologies for the generation of a constantly informed self-adaptive corporate office space (which addresses the behavioral patterns/preferences of its occupants). Architectural substantiations for such corporate bodies embodying dynamic business eco-systems usually tend to be rather inert in essence and deem to remain closed systemic entities, adhering to a rather static spatial program in accordance with which they were initially conceptualized. The research initiative, rather than creating conventional inert structural shells (hard components), thus focuses upon the development of a meta-system, or in other words the creation of a ‘soft’ computationally enriched open systemic framework (informational) which interfaces with the ‘hard’, material component and the users of the architectural construct (corporate offices). This soft space/meta system serves as a platform for providing the users with a democratic framework, within which they can manifest their own programmatic (activity oriented) combinations in order to create self designed spatial alternatives. The otherwise static/inert hard architectural counterpart, enhanced with contemporary technology thus becomes a physical interface prone to real-time spatial/structural and ambient augmentation to optimally serve its users.

summary The research paper illustrates an attempt to envision computation aided architectural responsiveness (spatial and informational) towards contemporary forms of corporate organizations. Architectural substantiations for such corporate bodies embodying dynamic business eco-systems tend to be rather inert in essence and deem to remain closed systemic entities, adhering to a rather static spatial program in accordance with which they were initially conceptualized. Architectural renditions supporting such emergent forms of organizations hence need to be re-thought: a need to break apart from the inherent closed system typology of architectural materiality needs to be visualized. summary The actual study in IVR (Immersive Virtual Reality) proposes a path which may provide meaningful information about the user’s behaviours and difficulties to articulate in immersive worlds. Beyond it, we are searching for parameters to improve design qualities in such an architectural space. Our interest is to use IVR as a medium to research the quality of spaces in particular the atmosphere of such spaces, on the basis of people’s interest and eagerness. Therefore it is important to comprehend the special conditions of the perception and the behaviour of the user in virtual spaces. The purpose is to understand the influence of an IVR environment upon the human being and to develop motivation for a personal use of virtual space as a learning environment. The aim of the analysis was to explore behaviour patterns in a simulated IVR environment. Moving from the dynamic of space, there arises a personal “space-time-system”.

title Mindful Spaces: Computational Geometry and the Conceptual Spaces in which Designers Operate

summary Combinatorial computational geometry, while dealing with geometric objects as discrete entities, provides the means both to analyse and to construct relationships between these objects and relate them to other non-geometrical entities. This paper explores some ways in which this may be used in design through a review of six, one-semester-long design explorations by undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Flexible Modeling for Design and Prototyping course between 2004 and 2007. The course focuses on using computational geometry firstly to construct topologically defined design models based on graphs of relationships between objects (parametric design,) and concurrently to output physical prototypes from these "flexible models"(an application of numerical computational geometry). It supports students to make early design explorations. Many have built flexible models to explore design iterations for a static spatial outcome. Some have built models of real time responsive dynamic systems. In this educational context, computational geometry has enabled a range of design iterations that would have been challenging to uncover through physical analogue means alone. It has, perhaps more significantly, extended the students' own concept of the space in which they design.

summary This paper addresses a pilot study in proposing a series of interface design solutions as integrated parts of a virtual communication space prototype: Telepinup System, which intends to enhance dynamic and seamless experiences for distributed architectural design discussions through digital interaction. Aiming to support graphic-centered, nonlinear, and contextual way of visualverbal communication suitable for design discussion, the prototype tool is developed to demonstrate various interface solutions and to be evaluated within the actual use contexts in two user experiments for its efficiency and effectiveness of underlying design criteria and proposed solutions. Interaction patterns during the experiments are recorded in the database and immediately visualized at the end of each test for participants to give instant feedback and for later analysis. The initial result shows that the collaboration between some critical interface solutions helps seamlessly synchronize graphical, verbal and social information exchange.

summary Recent studies in contemporary architecture have developed a variety of parameters regarding the information paradigm which have consequently brought different results and techniques to the process of architectural design. Thus, the emergence of an ecological thinking environment and its involvement in scientific matters has determined links moving beyond the conventional references that rely on information. It is characterized as an interconnected and dynamic interaction, concerning both a theoretical background and providing, at the same time, appropriate means in the architectural design process (Saggio, 2007, 117). The study is based on the assumption that Information Theory leads into a bidirectional model which is based on interaction. According to it, I want to emphasize the presence of the human body in both the architectural creation process and the use of architectural space. The aim of my study, is consequently an evaluation of how this corporeal view related to the human body, can be organized and interlinked in the process of architectural design. My hypothesis relies on the interactive process between the information paradigm and the ecological one. The integration of this corporeal view influences the whole process of architectural design, improving abilities and knowledge (Figure 1). I like to refer to this as a missing ring, as it occurs within a circular vital system with all its elements closely linked to each other and in particular, emphasizes architecture as a living being.

summary In this paper, we introduce Morphosis: A Responsive Membrane, which physically responds to movement, light and sound interacting spatially and temporally with the environment and their inhabitants. The fundamental hypothesis is to create architectural systems as living, evolving materials. The dynamic of the material is produced by dozens of actuators made by Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and LED’s which react in real time to change the behavior of the membrane. The system is controlled by a genetic algorithm in an attempt to develop a technological approach to performance skins that possess adaptive and evolutionary personality relative to changing phenomena of the environment of buildings.

summary I have been working on an architecture representation system in India since 1991; that markedly deviates from the need of traditional drawings as we know. Over three million square feet of work has been done that took advantage of this system as it was being developed. The system has now matured sufficiently to be put into practice as a comprehensive architectural system of practice. It takes advantage of creation of just-in-time dynamic multi-organizations that can get formed (and dismantled) over the Internet on a project to project basis. The raison d’être of the representation system is that it would expose the “source-code” (metaphorically) of any work of architecture to stakeholders, much the same way as an open-source software project exposes the internal representation to fellow developers. I believe the design of architecture must go through an “open source” process in order to produce socially responsible designs. Such a stance is explained in this paper. The paper also explains the system in detail; its mathematical basis and justifies the need for such an approach. It also explores how a collaborative practice can be put into place using the system in the context of Internet technologies.

summary The core project of this paper is the development of a system that allows me to test the representation of information and ideas as ‘form’ within space that is constantly generated and regenerated as a result of fresh input. The hypothesis being that this real time configuration of space using light offers a variety of new perceptions ranging from information sharing to public art never experienced previously. In this paper I consider the technical and media implications of extending conventional 2D screens, which are limited currently to architectural cladding, into a 3D matrix thereby inducing an alteration in spatial perception via the content animating the 3D matrix. The content is the result of an information injection derived from sensors of what from ever, where data have been captured and translated into a digital signal.

summary Architects—like other designers—tend to think, know and work in a visual way. In design research, this way of knowing and working is highly valued as paramount to design expertise (Cross 1982, 2006). In case of architecture, however, it is not only a particular strength, but may as well be regarded as a serious weakness. The absence of non-visual features in traditional architectural spatial representations indicates how these are disregarded as important elements in conceiving space (Dischinger 2006). This bias towards vision, and the suppression of other senses—in the way architecture is conceived, taught and critiqued—results in a disappearance of sensory qualities (Pallasmaa 2005). Nevertheless, if architects design with more attention to non visual senses, they are able to contribute to more inclusive environments. Indeed if an environment offers a range of sensory triggers, people with different sensory capacities are able to navigate and enjoy it. Rather than implementing as many sensory triggers as possible, the intention is to make buildings and spaces accessible and enjoyable for more people, in line with the objective of inclusive design (Clarkson et al. 2007), also called Design for All or Universal Design (Ostroff 2001). Within this overall objective, the aim of our study is to develop haptic design parameters that support architects during design in paying more attention to the role of haptics, i.e. the sense of touch, in the built environment by informing them about the haptic implications of their design decisions. In the context of our study, haptic design parameters are defined as variables that can be decided upon by designers throughout the design process, and the value of which determines the haptic characteristics of the resulting design. These characteristics are based on the expertise of people who are congenitally blind, as they are more attentive to non visual information, and of professional caregivers working with them. The parameters do not intend to be prescriptive, nor to impose a particular method. Instead they seek to facilitate a more inclusive design attitude by informing designers and helping them to think differently. As the insights from the empirical studies with people born blind and caregivers have been reported elsewhere (Authors 2010), this paper starts by outlining the haptic design parameters resulting from them. Following the classification of haptics into active, dynamic and passive touch, the built environment unfolds into surfaces that can act as “movement”, “guiding” and/or “rest” plane. Furthermore design techniques are suggested to check the haptic qualities during the design process. Subsequently, the paper reports on a focus group interview/workshop with professional architects to assess the usability of the haptic design parameters for design practice. The architects were then asked to try out the parameters in the context of a concrete design project. The reactions suggest that the participating architects immediately picked up the underlying idea of the parameters, and recognized their relevance in relation to the design project at stake, but that their representation confronts us with a sensory paradox: although the parameters question the impact of the visual in architectural design, they are meant to be used by designers, who are used to think, know and work in a visual way.

summary Contemporary architecture has been influenced by a shift of interest from the dialectic Derridean theories of language to those of Deleuze and Guattari who put more emphasis on transitions, experimentation and material presence. New digital design tools as well as new construction materials have opened up more possibilities for architects. E-paper, digital screens, printed concrete, composite polymers and dynamic cladding systems, have allowed designers to relish architecture at the surface level. Moreover, the process of architectural design is shifting from the desktop to the virtual world of the computer. NURBS, Blobs, Metaforms, Isomorphic Surfaces and other complex geometries are now possible using surface-driven computer modelling software. Because of this, the resultant architecture display a much more distinct appreciation and mastery of surface-effects. The following article argues that contemporary architecture is becoming increasingly a process of surfacing, both as a process of revealing and as a process of concealing. Surface, in common parlance, is generally understood as the exterior boundary of things, the outer skin of any object. In this sense, surfaces are actual, material, textural entities that we often encounter first. The surface is also taken to be something that conceals: “it was not what it appeared to be on the surface.” However, it is when things surface that they become evident or apparent; they appear out of a previously concealed existence or latency. Thus, surfacing is a process of becoming explicit, of becoming experientially apparent in a movement from virtuality to actuality. This article argues that the use of emerging computer technologies in architecture, have resulted in a renewed prioritization of surface and surface-effects. It shall be concluded that the surface-driven nature of most contemporary modelling software has resulted in a new approach to architectural design, one that has the potential of subverting the traditional hierarchy between ornament and structure. As a result, this design strategy has allowed for a much more spirited and creative approach to architecture.

summary As a preliminary report on a proof-of-concept design studio conducted during the spring semester of 2007 between the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) at Carleton University in Ottawa and the Immersive Environment Laboratory (IEL) at Pennsylvania State University, the paper first describes the implementation of this network-centric collaborative design platform. The report articulates the “staging” of the conditions of possibility for a dynamic interplay between technological mediation and the reality of making, then compares the use of high bandwidth technology with customized symmetrical toolsets in the tele-collaborative educational environment, versus commercial toolsets deployed over moderate bandwidth connections. In each setting, the collaborative environment is assessed according to issues encountered by students and design outcomes. The effectiveness of the digitally mediated collaborative studio is also gauged in terms of student reaction to the learning process via feedback surveys and questionnaires.

title Meta-Cognitive Mappings: Growing Neural Networks for Generative Urbanism

summary This paper examines the use of dynamic learning systems and adaptive topologies within neural networks models, and their implications as a tool for architectural mappings. The principal investigation is the ability of such systems to identify/ map/ model/ represent flows within dynamic data sets and identify topological relationships between these flows. A growing neural network [GNN] model is proposed, able to map dynamic data inputs over time. It is based on Kohonen’s early self-organising feature maps [SOM] and takes as its starting point previous work by CECA with neural networks in an architectural context, as well as other examples of neural gases, and GNNs, in order to develop a model capable of ‘autopoietic’ behaviour and ‘meta – learning’. The principal investigation is the ability of such a system to identify/ map/ model/ represent flows within dynamic data sets and identify topological relationships between these flows.

As a case study, the proposed neural network model has been used to map ‘urban territory’, as part of an on going architectural research project, based in North London. The project takes the notion of ‘urban territories’ rather than ‘urban space’ as the field for interrogation, as a description of temporal spatial occupation space, rather than spatial physical permanence. Furthermore, the GNN may be used to identify the relationships between unused and vacant sites along the street. In this way, the GNN may become a means of proposing architectural interventions for these spaces, so that the territories of those that occupy it and the negotiations between them are not lost.

summary The paper addresses the influence of digital technology on architectural design and production, particularly considering the possibilities of sound for the design and conception of architecture based on the dynamic condition, which is present in the “everyday” and its permutations. The day-to-day condition is regarded as a highly dynamic flux of economic, social and political aspects and conceptually linked to sound and musical variation as guiding design principles, to actually retain and reflect the vitality of every day’s measure. We have traced precedents and cases in sound reproduction and its implications on the codification of architecture and have created a digital design tool in Max/MSP. The primary objective of the tool is to produce the corollary between sound reproduction and the conception and production of an architectonic codification, and ultimately to propose a strategy of architectural construct that has given way from the clarity of static geometry to the complexity in dynamic variability, that of dissonance. Virtual architecture and its techniques are considered to express and implement such permutations and induce a measure of change in every step and direction of the design process. The application of digital technology is regarded as the intervening of “apparatus” and to represent a different approach in relation to the prevailing regime.

summary Special effects technology can facilitate dynamic sketching in the early stage of a design project without needing time-consuming effort. This form of sketching was tested in a design studio taught by the author. The study of dynamic materials and oceanfront site conditions set the stage at the beginning of a design process for a more comprehensive analysis later on. On the one hand, the risk of using special effects tools is that the visual look can seem convincing, but the apparent result is based upon an overly simplified set of assumptions. On the other hand, the use of such technology can be very stimulating to the design imagination without requiring complex analysis that may bog down the free flow of ideas. Once a greater commitment is made to a particular design proposal, more complete physical analysis and modeling can be undertaken to help avoid the risk of false first impressions. In the studio, cloth simulation was used to develop the design of tension membrane structures (tents) that retracted and unfurled in a series of complex movements. Fluid dynamics effects were used in the design and development of related boat dock facilities. A wind-tunnel simulation tool was used to explore the performance of the tension-membrane fabrics under varied wind loads. The visualization techniques were complemented by ¼ to ½ scale assembled components created by rapid prototyping. The use of an actual wind-tunnel further tested the prototypes in some cases. On the whole, quickly implemented special effects were the starting point for reacting to and developing some initial design concepts and served as the basis for more complete physical modeling of prototypes later on. Using animation as a design method is well established in other work (Hirschberg 06). Animation is also a helpful way to work out the step by step assembly of complex architectural form (Mark 95). The special effects tools permit a larger range of initial design alternatives to be initially considered that are subsequently narrowed down by physically based prototypes that are more predictive of real world performance.

summary Modeling and maintaining relationships in a parametric model compounds the work of the designer. When major changes in design direction take place, the work invested in the modeled relations is often lost. We contend that an implicit relational modeling approach provides for loosely coupled relations between the 'parts' of a design and mitigates the loss of work that occurs when changes take place. In our implemented system, implicit relations participate in a pattern of interaction known as the Dynamic Proxy.
