summary Digital Technology has transformed industrial manufacturing and production; and an array of Industrial Design products provide increasing comfort and benefit to millions of global citizens via ergonomic and mass production/customization strategies. Yet, housing needs of a rapidly growing global population are rarely affected by digital technology. Shifts in societal demographics, from rural to urban city centres, and concurrently Global Warming and ecological changes are exacerbating the world housing situation. Millions are homeless, live in inadequate shelter, or as in the US Manufactured Housing (MH) market, live in nondurable poor quality “manufactured” houses that are detrimental to health, at best, or during extreme weather events, suffer catastrophic damages often resulting in death to occupants. Nevertheless, housing concepts and related living units have benefited very little when compared to architecture’s related manufacturing industries counter-parts (i.e. automotive, aerospace, marine industries, etc). While Technology has vividly expanded the shape language of architecture (i.e. Free-Form-Design), some may argue that Free-Form- Design buildings generally have beauty that is only “skin deep” and typically focus on providing signature statements for both the designer and elite clientele. In this paper, we will briefly review the role of the architect in the US Manufactured Housing industry; additionally, we will identify the major problems that plaque the US Manufactured Housing Industry. Further, we will review how architects and Industrial Designers use technology in their respective fields and draw larger designmanufacture principals for issues of global housing. Our findings and analysis suggest that an Industrial Design approach, applied in architecture for mass housing, offers a means of improving the architect’s role and technology in manufactured housing for the masses.

summary Time-based media in design, especially adaptations of film and television techniques, continue to hold much promise in emerging architectural design processes; one potential use is to overcome the conforming regularity of Building Information Modeling, or BIM technology, by guiding the ongoing implementation of design in the Building Information process. This research and its associated pedagogy explores the potential benefits of using video diagrams, or memory diagrams, in micro design environments, rather than as overall design compositions, to provide location specific design instructions within a larger conceptual framework to inform the BIM process. It also evaluates the related potential of architecture embedded with smart technology as an extension of memory diagrams in an expanded BIM function.

title Emerging Technologies in a Participatory Design Studio_between Carleton University and Pennsylvania State University

summary As a preliminary report on a proof-of-concept design studio conducted during the spring semester of 2007 between the Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) at Carleton University in Ottawa and the Immersive Environment Laboratory (IEL) at Pennsylvania State University, the paper first describes the implementation of this network-centric collaborative design platform. The report articulates the “staging” of the conditions of possibility for a dynamic interplay between technological mediation and the reality of making, then compares the use of high bandwidth technology with customized symmetrical toolsets in the tele-collaborative educational environment, versus commercial toolsets deployed over moderate bandwidth connections. In each setting, the collaborative environment is assessed according to issues encountered by students and design outcomes. The effectiveness of the digitally mediated collaborative studio is also gauged in terms of student reaction to the learning process via feedback surveys and questionnaires.

summary In its purest state, Ambient Intelligence is smart computing whose presence is not apparent to the human senses except in response and actions. The original intentions and origins of Ambient Intelligence began with the need for more efficient and unobtrusive management of our everyday activities. Synonymous with ubiquitous computing, Ambient Intelligence, or AmI, consists of: UbiComp: the integration of microchips and computers into everyday objects; UbiComm: the ability of these objects to communicate with each other and the user; and Intelligent User Interface which allows inhabitants of the environment to interact with the system with human gestures (Riva 2005). Put together, these components are basically personifi ed computers. The key factor in Ambient Intelligent communities is that the microscopic computers are aware of their surroundings and their purpose just as human beings are. With the ability to self-program and react to new software, they eliminate the need for humans to program them, decreasing maintenance and programming time. These concepts and technologies raise important questions. What happens when the system disappears? Are we ready as a society to see a certain degree of power taken away from us by anticipatory computers? This short paper will provide an overview of AmI and why it is important for architects to embrace, explore, and engage this emerging technology.

summary Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an emerging technology in the architecture/engineering/construction industry. This paper presents a case study of the implementation of BIM at the precontract stage of a small scale in-door swimming pool project in Hong Kong. It aims at reviewing the workflow between consultants and the impacts on design visualisation, drawing documentation and bills of quantities. A practicable approach to transform designers’ traditional 2D drawings to BIM with the support from a BIM manager is unveiled. In addition to the results, this paper also highlights some issues such as hardware requirements, the shortfalls of the BIM tool and the supply and demand of skilled BIM personnel. There are other unanswered questions to be addressed in the near future.

summary Building projects today are not only born out digitally, but they are also realized digitally through "file-to-factory" processes of computer aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer numerically controlled (CNC) technologies. It was the challenge of constructability that brought into question, what new instruments of practice are needed to take advantage of the opportunities opened up by the digital modes of production, instead of whether a particular form is buildable. In this case of building construction, architects could design with attention to innovative details, afforded by unique shapes and sizes, knowing that whatever they created on their computer screen could be fabricated digitally for an affordable price. The aims of the research are to discuss and analyze the digital manufacturing techniques (CAM) in architecture and its fabrication, production process. To understand how these technologies fit within a broader context of architectural practice. The research begins with defining, what is digital manufacturing in architecture, its potentials, components and influences in the contemporary architecture. Further more it discusses the digital fabrication, Two- dimensional cutting, subtractive fabrication, additive fabrication and formative fabrication. The assembly technique, building skin, new materials and mass- customization in digital manufacturing techniques (CAM). That will be a hand in analyzing several case studies.

summary Presently, only a small percentage of people in the world typically hire an architect to design and build a home which is tailored to their preference. Besides the architect’s fee, clients also need to wait an interminable time for design and construction. Factory-made prefabricated housing systems tried to solve this problem previously. However, most pioneers failed to address the issues of variability and individual needs (Kieran & Timberlake, 2004). Plants closed because they produced more than the market demand, and prefabricated housing provided less flexibility than the traditional stick-built housing. The advanced digital technology makes it possible to communicate design ideas and concepts to others more effectively. The project delivery process leads itself to customization, embodying principles of lean production (Pine, 1993), flexible computer-integrated design interaction with clients, and reduced cycle times; all effecting rapid response between consumers and producers.

summary Building Information Modeling is the technology converting the workplace in design firms around the world. Now, professionals as well as academia see the feasibility and benefits of converting to such a new technology. Therefore, it seems inevitable to start teaching BIM to architecture students. And as we keep using and depending on computers the way we are, it also seems inevitable that programming will soon become one of the core curriculum classes for architecture students. However, the same problems facing professionals in design firms are those facing academic educators in schools of architecture, but with some different aspects. The misconceptions about the reality of BIM and the lack of understanding the full potential of the applications are the common issues. Few schools have started looking at the problem of preparing their students for a career in a BIM enabled work environment. The difficulty is due partly to the novelty of the technology and partly to the dilemma of teaching one application versus teaching the technology behind it. Besides the steep learning curve there should be the early introduction to how to interact deeply with the application to edit its content. The training required for BIM based CAD should focus on the core concepts rather than the application interface and functionalities. Therefore, building a course for teaching these systems should follow a different path than with conventional CAD. The training should be tied closely to the design curriculum in the design schools. A special version with different interface might empower the user. Hence, enhancing the experience and relieving some of the concerns attached with introducing BIM in the architecture curriculum.

title A Systematic Approach to Thermal Adaptation of Detached Single Family Buildings in Kosovo

summary The research focuses on thermal behaviour of non-insulated single detached family units in the region of Kosovo. The region has experienced a massive construction of illegal housing especially after the conflict of 1999. Such construction resulted in poor thermal behaviour of the houses due to the lack of insulation. The poor thermal behaviour resulted in degradation of thermal comfort for the inhabitants of the houses. This phenomenon occurs due to energy savings to heat the house or more accurately, a specific part of the house. The simulation is based on parametric studies in an hourly basis to compute the thermal behavior of three specific houses. The first simulation is performed on a non-insulated house whereas the other simulations are performed with improved thermal insulation in order to understand the importance of a thermal envelope and its impact in this type of houses. The generated results emphasize the energy savings if thermal envelope is improved in existing houses. Simulation program “TAS” was used to extract figures and numbers related to the cases.The research aims to inform the local population on possibilities for increasing the thermal performances of their houses by improvement of the thermal envelope. It raises the quality of living in their dwellings as well as the quality of the environment, subject to a considerable degradation caused by pollution, generated by the outworn power thermal power plants in Kosovo.

summary There is a continuous and urgent need for disaster relief in Thailand and countries suffering from floods and tsunami impact. Based on this issue, design and planning software for temporary housing project has been developed, as well as the process and guideline for implementation. This paper describes a unique coupling of interactive 3D virtual environment with parametric designing in order to manage disaster relief project more efficiently. Architects and planners can use the functionality of software on both design simulation and project evaluation aspects. We need to provide correct information to help people making decision when they are in disaster. So the disaster relief decision support system must offer proper information of crisis management focused on people, place, and process. One of the main features of software is the relationship modeling of essential factors such as number of people, houses, budget, time, and space. This automatic temporary houses generation and space planning is simulated for land use and layout plan design with cost estimation analysis. The system components were proposed to a new disaster relief system in alternative approach. Using community-based development will not cost budget but required people participation. Our software’s space coordination will start and centered from available space in school or temple with sufficient infrastructure. After essential factors are inputted, appropriated number of temporary houses, public facilities, and management guideline will be generated to support further planning decision. Our core system was developed on Java and Swing Technology, empowered by real-time 3D rendering CAD engine. In addition, “Virtools” as our Authoring Tools was applied to improve design interaction and explore rapid software prototyping. At the end, we discuss the comparison between real situations in Thailand and appropriate design standardization, which should be reconsidered how to manage crisis with the limitation of time and budget from government.

summary In a simple communication model we must talk about the understanding between participants. This is the result of a continuing connection and a dialog of agreements and disagreements in order to arrive at sharing an idea. However, society today is in an evolutionary lapse at an accelerated pace that interjects itself in this process. It is here where social forces distend and generate important ruptures between generations and individuals that fight to prevail or impose new languages and lifestyles. Today's society has become a visual society whose effect has been reinforced through technology in the devices that we use on a daily basis. The daily use of technology and its new languages has marked a disconnection between individuals that must be closed by using a new acculturation and teaching models. Disconnection is a omnipresent modern phenomenon that can be felt as the main effect in what specialists call the digital gap. This gap not only separates generations, but also ideologies with respect to the form in which we perceive, transmit and teach in our society today. This disconnection can be easily understood through a school system that has been designed for a manufacturing and agricultural world. However, many sectors within our society have been in state of constant change and evolution. This situation generates many opportunities where an agile society is required in response to these new local and global challenges. The students of today have, for example, multi-tasking abilities that better assimilate these changes. The researchers, Ian Jukes and Anita Dosaj refer to this disconnection as the result of poor communication between digital natives (our present-day students) and digital immigrants (many present-day adults). This phenomenon results in the fact that parents and educators speak the digital dialect as a second language, and because of that are lacking in their models of communication. For example, digital natives prefer a variety of sources with rapid access, while the digital immigrants prefer slower, more controlled sources that are limited and regulated. Nowadays, our educational or production activities in which we find ourselves immersed on a daily basis cause us to participate in a wide range of processes of production, dissemination and analysis of visual forms as part of our final product or service. Much of the work that we elaborate in movies, video and photography explore meaning, perception and communication in context as well as anthropological and ethnographic themes. Using this framework for our society today, the importance of the search for the promotion of the study of visual representation and the media for the greatest development and generation of benefits is brought to the fore. Through the use of images we can describe, analyze, communicate and interpret human behavior. All these settings, full of digital disconnections and reencounters, impact on all the visual aspects of culture, including art, architecture and material objects, influencing the bodily expressions of human beings. We have created a visual society when we put emphasis on the meaning and interpretation of all we receive through our visual sense. Wherever we look, we find objects that have been modified beyond their primary function to communicate messages. In this ecosystem we are consumers and suppliers. The communication and research needed to achieve reconnection, as well as the creation of new forms of production and visual understanding, are the themes on which the works contained in this edition are centered.

summary This paper reports a research study which evaluated the possibilities of building information modelling (BIM) within renovation of buildings of significant architectural, historic or cultural values. Renovation or restoration projects of historic buildings can be more demanding, challenging and complex than traditional renovation of for instance within housing. Objective of this research has been to transfer ICT (information and communication technology) and BIM research findings to historic design practice and true renovation project environments. The concept of building information modelling BIM is a proposed integrative framework for all design and construction project information in digital form. BIM can currently be seen to be in a phase of pragmatic pilot projects in several countries. Nevertheless, BIM has not been tested that much in renovation projects yet, although the importance of renovation and restoration is remarkable within the total volume of western construction sectors. One essential conclusion of this study is, that renovation design work should be started earlier in model-based design projects than in traditional renovation projects. More resources have also to be assigned to earlier design phases, if BIM is intended to be used extensively throughout the project. Another finding is the new concept of an inventory model, which is proposed to be the container for all building inventory, survey and measurement data. Even more so, when significant historic, hence more demanding building renovation is concerned, because there are more needs for various kinds of surveys, accurate data gathering and analyzing queries concerning the project.

title COMPUTER GAMING, BIOTECHNOLOGY AND ARCHITECTURE: EMBEDDING THE INTERSECTION WITHIN AN ARCHITECTURAL CURRICULUM.

summary Today, leading computer games provide real time environments including spaces, objects and characters that range (by manipulating an enormous array of parameters and being subject to simulations of real world physics) from the super realistic to the super delirious. Biotechnology, although apparently unrelated, also requires the manipulation of information in space and time and promises to affect environments in a range of ways that is at least as extreme. The opportunities suggested by an intersection between Architecture, Computer Gaming and Biotechnology were instrumental in the creation of courses and topics for students in first year right through to students studying toward a Masters degree. This paper reflects on and critically reviews the implementation, strategies and outcomes of embedding the intersection between Computer Gaming and Biotechnology within an Architectural curriculum. It draws from the experience of over 500 students, two Universities and major technological shifts. It develops the notion of the experiment in design. In contrast with the introduction of computer gaming technology into a core first year course, that had the underlying aim of including these technologies as a part of a general design curriculum, the introduction of issues connecting architecture with biotechnology (through computer gaming technology) reflects the specific research agenda of the author and is not intended for general application across an architectural curriculum. For more general application it could be seen as a strategy to promote cross disciplinary collaboration through the concept of the ‘boundary object’.

summary It is commonly acknowledged that ‘smart’ environments, interactive architecture and ‘smart’ homes will define the next cutting edge in architectural research. Most critics agree that one of the first problems that ‘smart’ homes will help to address is that of spiraling costs of healthcare and aging-in-place. This may be true for urban settings where there is the financial feasibility for such technologies but what about rural America? It has been conclusively proven that rural America suffers from a lack of healthcare (delivery and access). Prior research (Mathew 2005) has also established that a rural home is different from an urban home. Will technologies designed for the urban home work in a rural setting? And do rural people carry the same attitudes and biases towards technology? This paper continues our research in the design of ‘smart’ rural environments. It summarizes findings from focus group studies conducted in rural communities that help us to understand attitudes of people towards ‘smart’ technology. We will use these findings to examine the feasibility of ubiquitous computing and ‘smart’ spaces in rural areas. In conclusion, we will present guidelines to help designers in the creation of technology to augment healthy aging in rural home settings.

summary Computational design technologies and tools though operate on a very high level of decisiveness and precision, have a common goal to provide further possibilities of setting free. The terms of rule-based systems, algorithmic thinking processes, parametric design data-bases though drag us to a distant place deep-in digital environment, are all there for a better dwelling on earth and a better understanding of world. How architects relate themselves to their environment of design and realization is a problem of how they relate themselves to the world in the larger frame. Representational thinking initiated by modern science and technology which bases itself on the object quality of being by “enframing” things through their measurable aspects, causes modern age to be an age of “pictures”; where the touch with being is “in oblivion”. Martin Heidegger’s concept of gelassenheit (letting-be, releasement and calmness) reminds the essential nature of thinking as not moving towards and forward with a will-to-power but by stepping back to offer the required offenheit (openness) to the coming-into-being of anything that is with a will-not-to-will. It is about being-in-the-world and dwelling on earth as a part of it. According to this paper, for a further understanding of architectural thinking, space, and production, and the changing paradigms of architecture in the computational era, Heidegger’s concept of gelassenheit both provides a basis and surprisingly encounters us as a recent and future architectural condition.

title A Choice Model of Mass Customized Modular Housing by Internet Aided Design

summary The Internet has increased the opportunities to apply the concept of mass customization to customer interaction by tailoring the content to individual needs. Within limited design parameters, customers can determine what options they wish by participating in the flow of the design process from the beginning. This concept has already been implemented in the computer, clothing, and automobile industries, but it has not been fully integrated in architecture, especially the housing industry which is more directly related to personal life style. The industry lacks a process that will lead to the customization of homes that respond to the unique values and needs of the occupants. The paper describes the relationship of client’s requirements and available design options of the proposed system by examples of its current prototype. By integrating the nature of modularity in prefabricated housing design, a proposed web-based design system will provide information filtering questionnaires to assist customers in selecting appropriate design components. A methodology has been developed that can generate design options based on the client’s needs and available modular components from selected product suppliers making it possible to simulate the final design before processing orders for assembling and manufacturing.

title Tracking Design Development through Decomposing Sketching Processes

summary We conducted a protocol study of the architectural sketching process. We decompose the process into process flows to explore the extent to which it expresses concept development in schematic and refined design phases. We track the development of design concepts in these phases by following the process flows of individual sketched strokes. We argue that each stroke drawn by the designer reveals a probability of an embedded concept, and that this concept is either promoted and propagated throughout the design phases, or blocked while designing. We expand the notion of lateral and vertical transformation in design by introducing a set of processes described as cross propagation, lateral promotion and vertical promotion.

summary This paper explores emerging digital technologies and their application in architectural design. It investigates the tools and techniques that are currently available and produces some interesting work that is both inspiring and interesting. A series of three scenarios were explored via a digital design studio at the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning, The University of Sydney. The final work appeared in the ‘Disparallel Spaces’ exhibition, University of Sydney in May/June 2007. This paper will explain these scenarios and offer a look at some emerging trends in architectural design.
