title Various Media in the Design Process and Methodology

summary The paper describes the mergence of traditional architectural design processes with approaches that rely on digital media and software for the creation of architectural space. The depicted projects are part of a ‘work in progress’ process, with a recent studio that is set up to apply the so far accumulated experiences. Within the projects, focus is on those design phases where the applied media and methodology is changed and where the back and forth between different media and the depth of their implementation is perceptible in, and / or has a significant influence on the design itself. Through a line of successive experiments, the paper explains the development of a possible method that utilizes a variety of today’s accessible tools in architecture, making use of phenomena that appear when changing from one tool to another. Goal is to avoid limitations that are existent by the solely employment of one media or method, and to understand the fusion between different media as an inspiring momentum to develop the design further. The paper draws a line from an initially experienced and analyzed design method over several projects in practice and academia to conclude with a possible design method that could be established successfully in both fields of architectural teaching and practice. Initial experiences had been drawn from professional practice, in which the digital realm was limited to a support device of the design process. The first project that is described in the paper, explored the employment of digital media as a possible tool to drive the design process in a broader sense. The studio setting was organized as a laboratory for the exploration of the change of applied media. Focus was on the influence on the design progress. The design method required of the studios participants was not exclusively based on an architectural program, but on an initial, very conceptual process with an artistic approach, based on personal experiences of each participant. This was meant to detach the students entirely from architectural processes and mindsets they had picked up so far. Parallel to that kind of an intellectual process, studio participants learned to handle Maya as the 3D modeling software of their choice. Both the technical knowledge and the artistic projects were merged in a second project phase, in which participants had to further develop their work by applying a very effective mix of various design tools. Using digital media as a parametric design generator, subsequent projects were developed. The task for the designers here were to decide what kind of algorithm could be applied to which process and when it was to be stopped for the best result. Applying such an automatism successfully to the design process, the employment of traditional media and methodology remained, to adapt the digital driven schemes to the required design task. The diverse design experiments demonstrate important aspects when merging complex design and animation software with traditional design processes. To achieve good architectural design results, all examined projects showed that traditional design methods with its physical models are hardly replaceable to its full extent by other media, but digital media are able to strengthen design processes and invite designers to explore new means of design work.

summary An exploration of streetscape lighting that responds to site phenomena provides a basis to explore the abilities of sensor driven devices to construct landscape form. The project expresses multiple reactive spaces through a hypothetical design project on Pine Street in New York City. The landscape is the input using the variables of wind, sound, motion, and light in order to focus, open, lower, and contract each lighting device. As the landscape progresses throughout the day, season, and/or year, various relationships are created in form and light to organize spaces on multiple scales. Data becomes the armature for scripted reactions allowing the infrastructure to respond for safety or efficiency. With the proliferation of sensor networks and sensor systems, the possibilities arise for the re-articulation of data expression. The single lighting device works within a network that is connected by the specifi c phenomenology of the site. The project is grounded historically in the landscape folly, an architectural device that is not what it appears to be (Figure 1).

title Emergent Form from Structural Optimisation of the Voronoi Polyhedra Structure

summary In the course of the exploration of computational means in the architectural design process, in order to investigate more complex, adaptive geometries, the Voronoi diagram has recently gained some attention, being a three-dimensional space-filling structure which is modular but not repetitive. The project looks at the Voronoi diagram as a load-bearing structure, and whether it can be useful for structural optimisation. Hereby the edges of the Voronoi polyhedra are regarded as structural members of a statical system, which then is assessed by structural analysis software. Results seem to indicate that the Voronoi approach produces a very specific structural as well as spatial type of order. Through the dislocation of the Voronoi cells, the statical structure becomes more complex through emergent topology changes, and the initially simple spatial system becomes much more complex thorough emerging adjacencies and interconnections between spaces. The characteristics of the emerging form, however, lie rather in the complexity how shifted spaces and parts are fitted together, than in a radical overall emergent geometry. Spatially as well as a structurally, the form moves from a simple modular repetitive system towards a more complex adaptive one, with interconnected parts which cannot stand alone but rather form an organic whole.

title The Bishopsgate Tower Case Study

summary This paper summarizes the ongoing research on the Bishopsgate Tower in the City of London designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. We present a pre-rational geometry computational solution targeting a constraint-aware exploration of the architectural design-space, while interactively optimizing building performance in terms of constructability and cost-efficiency. We document a novel approach in building metrics optimization supported by parametric technologies and embedded analytical algorithms. The process is indicative of how computational methods will develop in the future and help designers find solutions for increasingly complex spaces.

summary This paper expose a way in which we are educating our students in industrial design in Venezuela, particularly at the time when they deal with the design of products with textiles. In one hand, the elaboration of patterns from digital-CAD models is shown. Where stages of exploration in product development of complex articles, the process of “trial and error” has been practically eliminated with the use of a software-CAD. And in the other hand, the documentation of these patterns exhibit that this is not just a drawing of their designs, it will be a way to change the work system in our Small and Medium Industries.

summary Novel conceptions of structures consisting of spatial formations of struts and cables present a uniquely defined morphology and structural performance, and offer opportunities for innovative applications in building design. A common feature of these structures is that their spatial geometry is not “a priori” given. This paper is focused on a specific type of cable-strut structure that occurs from the assembly of self tensioned cable-strut modules The spatial configuration of these structures is very complex and necessitated the development of elaborate geometric algorithms that permit the generation of their formal geometry in a virtual 3D environment. To facilitate both the design and the construction of such structures, a spatial visualization system, which integrates a) algorithms for initial form generation, b) geometric parameters that simulate construction stiffening processes, and c) appropriate structural analysis methods, has been developed. The structural organization and parts of this system are presented in this paper. The system renders feasible the exploration of alternate geometries with various levels of pre-stress and displays initial and final configuration of the structure. It also allows for structural analysis data visualization. Examples of projects designed with the assistance of this system are included and discussed.

summary The hybrid system in textile composites refers to the structural logic defined by Heino Engel, which describes a system that integrates multiple structural behaviors to achieve an equilibrium state (Engel 2007). This research explores a material system that can demonstrate a hybrid material behavior defined by the differentiated tensile and bending-active forces in a single, seamless knitted composite material. These behaviors were installed during the materialization phase and activated during the composite formation process. Here, the material formation involves two interdependent processes: 1) development of the knitted textile with integrated tensile and reinforced materials and 2) development of the composite by applying pre-stress and vacuuming the localized area with reinforcements in a consistent resin-based matrix. The flat bed industrial weft knitting machine has been utilized to develop the knitted textile component of the system with a controlled knit structure. This enables us to control the material types, densities, and cross sections with integrated multiple layers/ribs and thus, the performance of the textile at the scale of fiber structure. Both of these aspects were researched in parallel, using physical and computational methods informed and shaped by the potentials and constraints of each other. A series of studies has been utilized to develop small-scale prototypes that depict the potential of the hybrid textile composite as the generator of complex form and bending active structures. Ultimately, it indicates the possibilities of hybrid textile composite materials as self-structuring lightweight components that can perform as highly articulated and differentiated seamless architectural elements that are capable of transforming the perception of light, space, and touch.

title Gulliver in the land of Generative Design

summary The current trend in architectural design towards architectural computing has been treated both from a philosophical standing point and as an operational systems’ problem, in a quest for explications which could at last break ground for a more broad development and adoption of design tools. As Kostas Terzidis (2007) puts it, the intuitiveness that architects have put on so high a pedestal seems to be the central issue to be dealt with by both views. There seems to be no apparent shortcut toward the reconciliation between traditional practice and new media and most certainly it is not only a problem of interface design, but one of design method clarification and reinterpretation of those methods into computing systems. Furthermore, there’s no doubt left as to whether computing systems can generate such new patterns as to impact our own understanding of architecture. But even if computer algorithms can make possible the exploration of abstract alternatives to an abstract initial idea, as in Mathematica and Processing, the issue of relating abstract and geometric representations of human centered architecture lays in the hands of architects, programmers or, better yet, architect-programmers. What seems now to be the relevant change is that architectural design might escape from the traditional sequence embedded in the need – program – design iterations – solution timeline, substituted by a web of interactions among differing experimental paths, in which even the identification of needs is to be informed by computing. It is interesting to note that the computational approach to architectural design has been praised for the formal fluidity of bubbles and Bezier shapes it entails and for the overcoming of functionalist and serialization typical of modern architecture. That approach betrays a high degree of canonic fascination with the tools of the trade and very little connection to the day to day chores of building design. On the other hand, shall our new tools and toys open up new ways of thinking and designing our built landscape? What educational issues surface if we are to foster wider use of the existing technologies and simultaneously address the need to overtake mass construction? Is mass customization the answer for the dead end modern architecture has led us to? Can we let go the humanist approach begun in Renascence and culminated in Modernism or shall we review that approach in view of algorithmic architecture? Let us step back in time to 1726 when Swift’s ‘Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World by Lemuel Gulliver’ was first published. In Swift’s fierce critic of what seemed to him the most outrageous ideas, he conceived a strange machine devised to automatically write books and poetry, in much the same generative fashion that now, three centuries later, we begin to cherish. “Every one knew how laborious the usual method is of attaining to arts and sciences; whereas by his contrivance, the most ignorant person at a reasonable charge, and with a little bodily labour, may write books in philosophy, poetry, politicks, law, mathematics and theology, without the least assistance from genius or study. He then led me to the frame, about the sides whereof all his pupils stood in ranks. It was twenty foot square, placed in the middle of the room. The superficies was composed of several bits of wood, about the bigness of a dye, but some larger than others. They were all linked together by slender wires. These bits of wood were covered on every square with paper pasted on them; and, on these papers were written all the words of their language in their several moods, tenses, and declensions, but without any order. The professor then desired me to observe, for he was going to set his engine at work. The pupils at his command took each of them hold of an iron handle, whereof there were forty fixed round the edges of the frame; and giving them a sudden turn, the whole disposition of words was entirely changed. He then commanded six and thirty of the lads to read the several lines softly as they appeared upon the frame; and where they found three or four words together that might make part of a sentence, they dictated to the four remaining boys who were scribes. This work was repeated three or four times, and at every turn the engine was so contrived, that the words shifted into new places, as the square bits of wood moved upside down.” (Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s Travels, A Voyage to Balnibarbi) What astonishing forecast did Swift show in that narrative that, in spite of the underlying incredulity and irony, still clarifies our surprise when faced to what might seem to some of us just an abandonment of all that architects and designers have cherished: creativeness and inventiveness. Yet, we could argue that such a radical shift in paradigm occurred once when master builders left the construction ground and took seat at drafting boards. The whole body of design and construction knowledge was split into what now seem to us just specialties undertaken by more and more isolated professionals. That shift entailed new forms of representation and prediction which now each and all architects take for granted. Also, Cartesian space representation turned out to be the main instrument for professional practice, even if one can argue that it is not more than the unfolding of stone carving techniques that master builders and guilds were so fond of. Enter computing and all its unfolding, i.e. DNA coding, fractal geometry, generative computing, nonlinear dynamics, pattern generation and cellular automata, as a whole new chapter in science, and compare that to conical perspective, descriptive and analytical geometry and calculus, and an image begins to form, delineating a separation between architect and digital designer. In previous works, we have tried approaching the issues regarding architects education in a more consensual way. But it seems now that the whole curricular corpus might be changed as well. The very foundations upon which we prepare future professionals shall change, not only in College, but in High School as well. In this paper, we delve further into the disconnect between current curricula and digital design practices and suggest new disciplinary grounds for a new architectural education.

title SecondLife: A Computer-Mediated Tool for Distance-Learning in Architecture Education?

summary Despite the importance of distance learning for its ability to reach a wide audience, easiness to access materials, and its lower cost compared to traditional learning, architecture education has not been well served by distance education. This is because it has a higher level of learning objectives, it is taught by coaching methodologies, and involves nonverbal forms of communication. One of the most common learning methods used in the design studio is the Criticism/Critique, which is a graphic and oral type of communication between the tutor and the students. In this investigation, Second Life, a massive multi-user online virtual environment that offers three-dimensional spatial capabilities via Avatars impersonation, is used as a computer-mediated tool for text and graphic-based communication in a distance learning situation. The study describes a demonstration experiment where students had to communicate with their tutor, display and describe their projects at a distance, in a purposely designed criticism space in SecondLife. The main objective of this paper is to observe and document the effects and the use of SecondLife virtual environment as an online 3D graphical-based tool of computer-mediated communication in distance learning in architecture education. The study also answers some questions: How well did the students use the tools of the medium provide? Was there a sense of personal communication and realism gained through using Avatars in the virtual environment? Did SecondLife provide a successful means of communication for a graphic-based context? And what are the students’ opinions about the learning environment? Using multiple methods of data collection, mainly based on an electronic observation of the experiment, questioning the participants before and after the experiment, and the analysis of the chat transcripts, the study presents descriptive results of the experiment, and discusses its main features. Proposals for modifications are made for future replications.

summary The research paper illustrates an attempt to envision computation aided architectural responsiveness (spatial and informational) towards contemporary forms of corporate organizations. Architectural substantiations for such corporate bodies embodying dynamic business eco-systems tend to be rather inert in essence and deem to remain closed systemic entities, adhering to a rather static spatial program in accordance with which they were initially conceptualized. Architectural renditions supporting such emergent forms of organizations hence need to be re-thought: a need to break apart from the inherent closed system typology of architectural materiality needs to be visualized. The research paper, addresses such issues by specifically focusing upon developing intelligent reconfigurable spaces (in accordance with customized activity oriented spatial preferences of its occupants) and an interactive user interface as a front end of the system (for inputting preferences and 3d space visualization purposes). A space cluster, completely user centric, equally dynamic, and flexible, as compared to the dynamic activities which the space sustains is thus developed. The papers content is explicitly based on the output of the authors PhD research work conducted at the TU Delft, Netherlands.

summary 3D virtual environments provided by current information and communication technologies offer new opportunities for architecture, potentially opening a completely new domain for architectural practice. Within this paper we describe scenarios for the use of 3D virtual environments at schools of architecture based on experiences from an EC-funded research project for the establishment of 3D - virtual campus for VIPA (Virtual campus for virtual space design Provided for European Architects). The campus was conceived as an extension of the existing learning management system used at TU-Vienna, Moodle. Within VIPA three virtual environments were tested as collaborative labs, for teaching architecture, and as digital environmental design tools: Open Croquet, Blender and Second Life.

summary There is a continuous and urgent need for disaster relief in Thailand and countries suffering from floods and tsunami impact. Based on this issue, design and planning software for temporary housing project has been developed, as well as the process and guideline for implementation. This paper describes a unique coupling of interactive 3D virtual environment with parametric designing in order to manage disaster relief project more efficiently. Architects and planners can use the functionality of software on both design simulation and project evaluation aspects. We need to provide correct information to help people making decision when they are in disaster. So the disaster relief decision support system must offer proper information of crisis management focused on people, place, and process. One of the main features of software is the relationship modeling of essential factors such as number of people, houses, budget, time, and space. This automatic temporary houses generation and space planning is simulated for land use and layout plan design with cost estimation analysis. The system components were proposed to a new disaster relief system in alternative approach. Using community-based development will not cost budget but required people participation. Our software’s space coordination will start and centered from available space in school or temple with sufficient infrastructure. After essential factors are inputted, appropriated number of temporary houses, public facilities, and management guideline will be generated to support further planning decision. Our core system was developed on Java and Swing Technology, empowered by real-time 3D rendering CAD engine. In addition, “Virtools” as our Authoring Tools was applied to improve design interaction and explore rapid software prototyping. At the end, we discuss the comparison between real situations in Thailand and appropriate design standardization, which should be reconsidered how to manage crisis with the limitation of time and budget from government.

summary Residents’ active participation is necessary for a feasible community design from the planning stage to maintenance and management. it is necessary to show information related to a plan efficiently to facilitate understanding, and to consider a plan in a limited time. The purpose of this study is to develop a Community Space Design system (CSDS) that can use GIS data and Real-time simulation, in order to support comprehension of 3D area information during continuous development. Using CSDS, participants were able to treat various GIS data fixed, and a subject called the division and the disaster prevention of a community, which the object ground is holding can be understood visually on the same 3D space as real space. Because their solution was found, the design was accepted quickly.

summary The paper focuses on the early stages of the design process where the architect needs assistance in finding reference projects and describes different aspects of a concept for retrieving previous design solutions with similar layout characteristics. Such references are typically used to see how others have solved a similar architectural problem or simply for inspiration. Current electronic search methods use textual information rather than graphical information. The configuration of space and the relations between rooms are hard to represent using keywords, in fact transforming these spatial configurations into verbally expressed typologies tends to result in unclear and often imprecise descriptions of architecture. Nowadays, modern IT-technologies lead to fundamental changes during the process of designing buildings. Digital representations of architecture require suitable approaches to the storage, indexing and management of information as well as adequate retrieval methods. Traditionally planning information is represented in the form of floor plans, elevations, sections and textual descriptions. State of the art digital representations include renderings, computer aided design (CAD) and semantic information like Building Information Modelling (BIM) including 2D and 3D file formats such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) (IAI, 2010). In the paper, we examine the development of IT-technologies in the area of case-based reasoning (Richter et al., 2007) to provide a sketch-based submission and retrieval system for publishing and researching building layouts including their manipulation and subsequent use. The user interface focuses on specifying space and their relations by drawing them. This query style supports the spatial thinking approach that architects use, who often have a visual representation in mind without being able to provide an accurate description of the spatial configuration. The semantic fingerprint proposed by (Langenhan, 2008) is a description and query language for creating an index of floor plans to store meta-data about architecture, which can be used as signature for retrieving reference projects. The functional spaces, such as living room or kitchen and the relation among on another, are used to create a fingerprint. Furthermore, we propose a visual sketch-based interface (Weber et al., 2010) based on the Touch&Write paradigm (Liwicki et al., 2010) for the submission and the retrieval phase. During the submission process the architect is sketching the space-boundaries, space relations and functional coherence's. Using state of the art document analysis techniques, the architects are supported offering an automatic detection of room boundaries and their physical relations. During the retrieval the application will interpret the sketches of the architect and find reference projects based on a similarity based search utilizing the semantic fingerprint. By recommending reference projects, architects will be able to reuse collective experience which match the current requirements. The way of performing a search using a sketch as a query is a new way of thinking and working. The retrieval of 3D models based on a sketched shape are already realized in several domains. We already propose a step further, using the semantics of a spatial configuration. Observing the design process of buildings reveals that the initial design phase serves as the foundation for the quality of the later outcome. The sketch-based approach to access valuable information using the semantic fingerprint enables the user to digitally capture knowledge about architecture, to recover and reuse it in common-sense. Furthermore, automatically analysed fingerprints can put forward both commonly used as well as best practice projects. It will be possible to rate architecture according to the fingerprint of a building.

summary In virtual workplace, two-dimensional system with desktop metaphor can provide only limited functions and interactions. It is indispensable to create a framework that can change traditional computer generated 3D model into interactive virtual architecture exploited by end users. However, such framework cannot be established without fundamental understanding of the new virtual architecture. The aim of this research emphasizes on how to design a virtual working place supporting actual office activities to extend the boundary of the conventional office through ‘Digital Space Lab’ case study. To achieve our goals, potential usability of virtual architecture is investigated. The next step is to design the virtual working place. After that, a set of scenarios indicating how the end users will utilize our interactive workplace is demonstrated. Eventually, the result serves as basis knowledge to construct a usability framework for the novel virtual architecture.

summary The aim of this research project is to develop a methodological process that allows the designer to assemble and create various scenarios representing an urban environment through the utilization of economical computer based methods. During the last decade different techniques have been developed to address the needs of visualisation of urban areas many being based on photographic and photogrammetric systems. The demand for 3-D urban models continues to grow and although new technologies have undoubtedly reduced the time needed for the construction of a 3D model, there are still some remaining problems related to data quality and the level of the dimensional accuracy. On the basis that these problems are primarily related to software and hardware constraints and in conjunction with the fact that the richness and complexity of an urban space is difficult to represent in a 3D context, there is a growing interest in the modelling of the urban fabric which is not dependant on heavily capitalised technology for its data. The core principle of the current research project is summarised in the process of deploying a mechanism, which will allow the visualisation of urban form without loosing its quality and architectural characterisation. This technique suggests that a selection of various building types can be collected and described by their architectural elements, textures, scale and dimensions. From each group of buildings a library of fragmented architectural components can be then derived. The accomplishment of this methodology is the formulation of a 'grammar' comprised of a characteristic ‘syntax’ and its associated ‘vocabulary’. Therefore the expected outcome of this research is an approach that would allow the designer to create easily and quickly not only any desired building but additionally any imaginary cityscape.

summary The photorealistic visualisation of lighting-scenarios with the help of virtual 3d city models is gaining importance as a tool, helping to make decisions in the process of planning. This form of presentation makes sense to every spectator very quickly and in a definite way, thus it makes collaboration easy especially in interdisciplinary planning teams. Moreover the light-planner has the possibility to check his design in a virtual surrounding and therefore gain additional reliability for his planning. The displayed, exemplary, workflow and the techniques belonging to it, allow to show situations during the course of planning and to present the current state of planning realistically. Hence the quality of planning can be enduringly improved, through experimental use of new materials and ideas. Moreover alternative planning that does not show the right results can be eliminated very early in planning process, with not need for special investments to do so.

summary CONSTRICTOR is a novel teaching and learning tool to introduce students of architecture to the fundamentals of computational design. It was developed within an EC funded e-learning project, VIPA (Virtual campus for virtual space design Provided for European Architects). In this paper, we describe the general structure and technology of CONSTRICTOR and its application within the course “Synthetic Constructions II”) that aims at familiarizing students with concepts like cellular automata, swarms, shape grammars, path finding etc. CONSTRICTOR allows students to observe simulations, navigate through them and change the parameters that define and control them, thereby developing an understanding for the rules that govern their virtual environments. They can also change the geometry used in the simulations and work with and export their results. Students can modify the simulations at code level, combine them or write entirely new simulations. Finally some of the student work performed during and after the course is described, and an outlook for future work and further developments around the VIPA courses and the constrictor software will be given.

summary People’s lifestyle, traditions and culture affect the way they live, interact with the built environment and erect buildings. Lifestyle influences the physical characteristics of the space such as: organization of spaces, distances between spaces and location of spaces. Taking lifestyle aspects into account by architects would provide comfortable environment that is tailored to people needs and aspirations. On the other hand, rapid developments in computer modeling of buildings since 1960, led to the invention of 3D CAD systems that are capable of modeling the physical volume, shape and form of buildings and helping project team members to virtually visualize buildings. 4D CAD systems went beyond the mere 3D modeling of the physical building as they link the 3D virtual building model with other building’s information such as construction process, cost estimation etc. The nD CAD research that emerged in the late 1990s proposed endless dimensions of CAD modeling that would include the building regulations’ requirements, basic user needs and client requirements. This paper argues that it would not be enough to model the client requirements and some of user/ occupant’s physical and environmental aspects as it does not reflect the real utilization of the building by building’s user and the way that he/ she likes to live. This research aims to define the lifestyle characteristics of the architectural space and its boundaries. It suggests that various aspects of the user’s lifestyle such as degree of privacy, flexibility and adaptability required for each space, organization of internal spaces and style of spaces should be implemented in the future nD CAD models. Such implementation would enable designers to consider real life scenarios, model the real needs of people and provide the adequate end product for them.
