summary The spaces we live in are increasingly entwined in a complex weave of architecture and technology. With the evolution of intelligent devices that work in the background, design of place will eventually be a seamless integration of not just efficient but also experiential and virtual technologies. This signals a paradigm shift because “smart” architecture affords users a new interaction with architecture. In spite of such promises, we have seen interactive architecture ideas and “smart” environments only within laboratory walls or in the form of simplistic implementations. Perhaps the reason is simple. Rachael McCann asks if the integration of technology within the context of an increasingly information-driven modern era has abandoned the body in favor of the mind (McCann 2006). If we acknowledge that “smart” computing has the opportunity to transcend an efficient backbone to generator of experiences, perhaps we, as designers, must reconsider our position and strategy in this modern world. This paper is designed as a critical essay—one which evaluates interactive architecture and “smart” environments within the context of today’s socio-cultural climate. The paper hopes to open a discussion about the role of computing as architecture and the role of the architect in the design of such architecture.

summary Digital fabrication of building components by means of computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines is of high interest for architects and the building industry. Common design software does not allow for utilizing the potential that lies within these new technologies. To fully exploit the power of digital fabrication, new design paradigms have to be explored. In our design studios we implement direct scripting, the use of images to control parameters, as well as dynamical and rule based systems, which enables the designer to exploit the possibilities of digital fabrication. This paper provides an overview of the tools we developed. We will present some of the results from these classes and discuss its implications for future tool sets. It is essential to apply the knowledge of production methods at the starting point of the design process, in order to fully benefit from these new technologies. We believe that novel design strategies emerge out of this shift in production. Our goal is to integrate the principles of digital fabrication into the design process, resulting in a more valuable and sustainable architecture.

summary This paper looks at the question of freedom and control in relation to the design of interactive media architecture projects for public spaces. It speculates on how designers of responsive systems must negotiate the relationship between their designs, the users’ participation and the protocols of existing public spaces. Using Stafford Beer’s formulation for a “liberty machine” it reflects on strategies for under-specifying such systems, to make them more adaptable to change. Questions that it poses include: How open should a system be? What role should public participation play in its instantiation? Who should maintain it? Who or what should control its objectives?

summary In this paper we discuss the parallels between architectural design and strategic marketing in industry to advance the theme of predicting the future in architecture. Just like companies face the challenge to organize their R&D activities, architects develop different strategies for their designs. Looking at the architectural design process as well as at strategic planning done in companies we recognize that they have much in common. To advance the theme of predicting the future in architecture we draw parallels to strategic marketing in industry. Both activities require a clear vision regarding customer requirements, available technologies, and areas of operation and emerging markets. We report on a successfully implemented method Pictures of the Future at Siemens and relate it to architecture and show possibilities to expand the role of architectural design in the future. We opine that it is now time to expand the architectural curriculum towards Knowledge Architecture.

summary The publicly and privately funded national R&D program ‘Digital Construction’ was initiated in 2003 in order to establish a common platform for interchanging digital information and to stimulate digital integration in the Danish building industry. This paper explores the relation between visions, strategies and tools formulated in the ‘Digital Construction’ program, and the first experiences made from implementing the 3D work method part of the program in an ongoing building project. The discussions in the paper are placed in the complex field between choosing strategies for integrating information and communication technologies on national level, and the effects of these strategies on real life building projects.

summary New requirements from the "Visual Information Society" motivate the creation of strategies for the teaching of digital design as a professional skill. Here we describe a computer-mediated experience with a learning method addressing a strategy of digital visual codification in initial workshops of Graphic Design. The strategy is based on a “system of perceptual tools for digital visual codification”, categorized into semiotic foundations, which allow the student to address visual communication through digital design with normalized criteria and creative openness. This enables the student to develop competence in visual digital communication and self-assessment of both process and result.

summary In many schools all over the world, teachers as well as researchers have been developing digital learning contents. These contents exist mostly in isolation; that means in and within a school or in the personal files, although it would be much more profitable to the community of teachers in architecture to share the results of all these efforts. In this paper we present and discuss two different strategies regarding this ambition: The first develops digital pedagogical material and tries to invite others to contribute in order to create a big repository. As an example we will present DYNAMO, a dynamic architectural memory on-line built over the last 8 years, with to date more than 600 architectural projects fully documented with plans, pictures, texts and a fairly developed category search engine. In the second approach every owner of a repository keeps his/her data and shares its content with others through a central search engine. As an example we will present and discuss a recently launched EU-programme called MACE – Metadata for Architectural Contents in Europe – which aims at enhancing the metadata of as many as possible different repositories in order to allow searches by distant partners. Real access conditions to the data still will remain those specific for each repository. The purpose of this paper is to share information and (similar?) experiences in Asia or outside Europe in general.

title COMPUTER GAMING, BIOTECHNOLOGY AND ARCHITECTURE: EMBEDDING THE INTERSECTION WITHIN AN ARCHITECTURAL CURRICULUM.

summary Today, leading computer games provide real time environments including spaces, objects and characters that range (by manipulating an enormous array of parameters and being subject to simulations of real world physics) from the super realistic to the super delirious. Biotechnology, although apparently unrelated, also requires the manipulation of information in space and time and promises to affect environments in a range of ways that is at least as extreme. The opportunities suggested by an intersection between Architecture, Computer Gaming and Biotechnology were instrumental in the creation of courses and topics for students in first year right through to students studying toward a Masters degree. This paper reflects on and critically reviews the implementation, strategies and outcomes of embedding the intersection between Computer Gaming and Biotechnology within an Architectural curriculum. It draws from the experience of over 500 students, two Universities and major technological shifts. It develops the notion of the experiment in design. In contrast with the introduction of computer gaming technology into a core first year course, that had the underlying aim of including these technologies as a part of a general design curriculum, the introduction of issues connecting architecture with biotechnology (through computer gaming technology) reflects the specific research agenda of the author and is not intended for general application across an architectural curriculum. For more general application it could be seen as a strategy to promote cross disciplinary collaboration through the concept of the ‘boundary object’.

During this journey strategies are proposed to integrate and combine communication codes to digital and traditional resources to achieve a presentation that brings the major possible information of the occurrences that happen at the moment of the conception of the idea. For this purpose the "point-and-click interface" or "mouse driven slide show" are explored as they are considered optimum in the relation available technology-result obtained. However, the subsequent tasks of edition and data management with a lot of images are hard.

summary Geographic information systems have long been established as useful tools for urban planning. The aim of this study is to put forward applications of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to urban conservation in cities with architectural heritage. The study presents a specific database design to be integrated within a GIS, and the methodology of gathering data for such a database. This study concerns Bahrain’s architectural heritage, which includes many significant historic buildings as well as an overall traditional character of Bahrain’s old towns. This heritage is endangered due to extensive new urban development and the general neglect over the past decades. The study also describes an experimental database that is implemented for documenting the urban character of the old towns of Manama and Muharraq. This database was tested during a partial visual survey of Manama. It is hoped that this database will be the nucleus of a long-term process of urban conservation in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The work described here is part of a larger study conducted by the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) and the municipal government in Bahrain. A group of international experts in urban planning, urban design, and historic preservation also presented their own specific recommendations. The author of this paper was responsible for designing the GIS that helps in documenting the historic cities of Bahrain. This report proposes the development of a geographic information system for urban conservation planning. The system supports planning specialists and decision makers in their areas of work, such as the creation of urban conservation zones and redevelopment strategies. The system documents existing structures and their present conditions in order to assist in decisions regarding their preservation, restoration, and possible reuse. Such a system will also help the municipalities in regular heritage management tasks.

summary The ongoing research project develops a new process and related tools to enhance architectural design and education for sustainability. The new process consists of design, play, and update phases. First, in the design phase, designers (professionals or students) use Building Information Modeling (BIM) for representing architectural geometric information and non-geometric information. Second, in the play phase, designers will play games with their designed BIM model. The BIM model is made accessible to educational games through Application Programming Interface (API) of BIM. Both geometric and non-geometric information of BIM are brought into games as content. Game components such as characters (acting as virtual building users), graphics, sound, physics, artificial intelligence, game logic etc., can be added into the games. The games act as a simulation environment for both human activities and physical dynamics in buildings. Designers will be informed about the evaluation of their design in terms of sustainability and about the general design strategies and specific solutions in an interactive and fun way. Finally, in the update phase, the games will allow designers to modify the design and/or the building users’ behaviors/life styles until satisfactory performance is achieved. The design modification will be transferred back into the architectural design through the same API of BIM.

summary This paper presents an experience of collective digital fabrication and parametric modeling of furniture made with recycled plastic waste, inspired by natural elements of the Brazilian northeast. In addition to conventional joinery techniques, we highlight the technologies of rapid prototyping (PR) and digital fabrication (FD) (Volpato, 2007, Pupo, 2008; Pupo, 2009); as tools that promote a paradigm shift, both in the design process and in production and materialization (Kolarevic, 2005), allowing recycled plastic to have new applications. We started with a brief review of digital fabrication processes in Brazil, emphasizing collaboration in design and execution. Then, we contain the recycling of plastic and the need for actions for its best destination. Finally, we present a sustainable and collaborative design experience: the modeling and digital fabrication of furniture, entirely produced from recycled plastic, called “Banco Cabaça”.

summary Recent studies in contemporary architecture have developed a variety of parameters regarding the information paradigm which have consequently brought different results and techniques to the process of architectural design. Thus, the emergence of an ecological thinking environment and its involvement in scientific matters has determined links moving beyond the conventional references that rely on information. It is characterized as an interconnected and dynamic interaction, concerning both a theoretical background and providing, at the same time, appropriate means in the architectural design process (Saggio, 2007, 117). The study is based on the assumption that Information Theory leads into a bidirectional model which is based on interaction. According to it, I want to emphasize the presence of the human body in both the architectural creation process and the use of architectural space. The aim of my study, is consequently an evaluation of how this corporeal view related to the human body, can be organized and interlinked in the process of architectural design. My hypothesis relies on the interactive process between the information paradigm and the ecological one. The integration of this corporeal view influences the whole process of architectural design, improving abilities and knowledge (Figure 1). I like to refer to this as a missing ring, as it occurs within a circular vital system with all its elements closely linked to each other and in particular, emphasizes architecture as a living being.

summary In this paper we track the evolution of computational design from its analog origins to its contemporary digital regime. Our long term goal is to qualify and quantify the implications of digital computation on design thinking and its influence on the architectural practice. Meanwhile, we present the results of our past few years of collaborative research in design and computation that illustrate the nature of the intellectual engagement required for appreciating the potential of digital design thinking and making. In a temporal frame, these results are expressed as a constellation of punctuated innovations emerging sporadically during the painstaking process of tackling architectural problems using digital means. In the long run, they hopefully amount to an approach to fleshing out a paradigm shift from analog to digital and building a knowledge foundation of architectural methods.

summary In the preparation of urban designs, it is important for the designer to understand the space feature of the project district and to obtain the design resource from the site. In our design studio, students take pictures of a point of interest (POI) in the project district and discuss the design concept of the district based on the photographs. To share the photographs obtained by the students during the field survey along with the attribute information and shooting positions, the present authors have developed a Web-based image archive system as an effective resource for a design studio. This system registers the photographs taken in the surveying district on GoogleMap and simultaneously displays the images on a three-dimensional city model. In this paper, we discuss the development of a Map-based Repository of Image (MRI) system to share the photographs of a city. Moreover, we attempt to evaluate its pedagogical effect in the design studio.

summary The paper focuses on the early stages of the design process where the architect needs assistance in finding reference projects and describes different aspects of a concept for retrieving previous design solutions with similar layout characteristics. Such references are typically used to see how others have solved a similar architectural problem or simply for inspiration. Current electronic search methods use textual information rather than graphical information. The configuration of space and the relations between rooms are hard to represent using keywords, in fact transforming these spatial configurations into verbally expressed typologies tends to result in unclear and often imprecise descriptions of architecture. Nowadays, modern IT-technologies lead to fundamental changes during the process of designing buildings. Digital representations of architecture require suitable approaches to the storage, indexing and management of information as well as adequate retrieval methods. Traditionally planning information is represented in the form of floor plans, elevations, sections and textual descriptions. State of the art digital representations include renderings, computer aided design (CAD) and semantic information like Building Information Modelling (BIM) including 2D and 3D file formats such as Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) (IAI, 2010). In the paper, we examine the development of IT-technologies in the area of case-based reasoning (Richter et al., 2007) to provide a sketch-based submission and retrieval system for publishing and researching building layouts including their manipulation and subsequent use. The user interface focuses on specifying space and their relations by drawing them. This query style supports the spatial thinking approach that architects use, who often have a visual representation in mind without being able to provide an accurate description of the spatial configuration. The semantic fingerprint proposed by (Langenhan, 2008) is a description and query language for creating an index of floor plans to store meta-data about architecture, which can be used as signature for retrieving reference projects. The functional spaces, such as living room or kitchen and the relation among on another, are used to create a fingerprint. Furthermore, we propose a visual sketch-based interface (Weber et al., 2010) based on the Touch&Write paradigm (Liwicki et al., 2010) for the submission and the retrieval phase. During the submission process the architect is sketching the space-boundaries, space relations and functional coherence's. Using state of the art document analysis techniques, the architects are supported offering an automatic detection of room boundaries and their physical relations. During the retrieval the application will interpret the sketches of the architect and find reference projects based on a similarity based search utilizing the semantic fingerprint. By recommending reference projects, architects will be able to reuse collective experience which match the current requirements. The way of performing a search using a sketch as a query is a new way of thinking and working. The retrieval of 3D models based on a sketched shape are already realized in several domains. We already propose a step further, using the semantics of a spatial configuration. Observing the design process of buildings reveals that the initial design phase serves as the foundation for the quality of the later outcome. The sketch-based approach to access valuable information using the semantic fingerprint enables the user to digitally capture knowledge about architecture, to recover and reuse it in common-sense. Furthermore, automatically analysed fingerprints can put forward both commonly used as well as best practice projects. summary This communication is based on the development of a new subject to be imparted in collaboration with three Departments (Visual Communication, Projects and Construction) at the School of Architecture of Barcelona. It is a work that has been financed with a special grant from our university, aimed at the development of new teaching modalities and, in particular, of those that would develop the use of new technologies, collaboration among university departments and eLearning. The aim of the communication is twofold. First, to present some results that we consider valuable in themselves, as much for the techniques as for the methodology that we have used. Second, to propitiate a debate on the new situation that the teaching of architecture is moving to, due to the advance of a series of instruction methods where the methodological organization, the storing of informative material and the preparation of autonomous interactive systems, open more and more effective roads of learning but that, at the same time, point towards a new educational structure that fits badly within the traditional structures in which we have still to work daily. Regarding the first point, the main aspects to highlight are: a) the development of a selflearning system by means of a very complete series of tutorials that allow a gradual acquisition, depending on the necessities or interests of each student, of geometric modeling, parametric design, visual simulation and interactive animation techniques, b) the development of a system of general information supply and on line comments and corrections. Regarding the second point, a provisional theoretical framework has been elaborated based on the consideration of the ubiquitous visual communication media as misleading mediators of a personal relationship. This theoretical frame has been tested by a few experiences carried out with the collaboration of students implied in the project. The general conclusion is that both challenges must be faced at the same time: new educational technologies must be analysed and integrated in our curricula and a new theoretical framework, able to clarify the difference between instruction and education, must be developed in parallel with those technologies.

summary Web surfing, the act of following links of interest with no pre-defined search goal, is a paradigm that can be translated to the physical realm of urban exploration. With mobile computing technology and its supporting infrastructure becoming ever more ubiquitous, a user's digital device can be transformed into a portal that connects their physical environment with the virtual, providing instant access to a plethora of information that can influence and guide their interactions with the city. This paper describes the technical aspects of a context-aware system for urban exploration based on the paradigm of web surfing. An implementation is presented that demonstrates a browsing style of interaction with an urban environment through context-based navigational prompts.
