title A Computational Framework for Theater Design

summary This paper presents the results of an ongoing research on computational methods for the design of theatrical spaces. We demonstrate a systemic approach to design supported by a set of digital tools implemented for assisting the process. The primary purpose of the framework is to establish a formal basis for expressing and exploring explicit design criteria. At this stage the framework enables us to metrically access a range of design metrics that traditionally have been addressed through primarily architectural narrative. Moreover, our method strives in establishing a background where knowledge can be explicitly encoded and the results of analytical methods can be additively employed. In the future, the framework will assist as the platform for experimenting with generative or query-based design processes empowered by computation. We structured this paper / framework around three conceptual units: (a) a design intent toolkit assisting the processes of rapidly generating theater configurations; (b) an analytical system that evaluates a range of design metrics centered about aspects of visual comfort; and (c) a post-processing and visualization unit that binds the design metrics with existing data / studies and provide a range of representation methods. Overall, the methodology adopts existing knowledge in theatrical design, challenges traditional ideas of understanding the theater and proposes methods for evaluating its architectural performance. The conclusions focus on highlighting both the limitations and the potential of our system in the process of theater design. We also extend outside the boundaries of the current research into a brief discussion on the methodological impact of digital technology in architectural research. Finally we propose areas of future research and development.

summary The purpose of this paper is to explore the type of social interactions that can be generated when a technological platform is introduced in a public environment. Here we present an interactive urban installation, which use a body-input as a form of a non-traditional user interface. Its aim is to enhance novel experiences that can enrich interactions between people nearby, sharing the same space and the same playful atmosphere. The prototype incorporates a grid of lights that dynamically generates patterns according to pedestrian’s position over the carpet. The installation was tested in various locations around the City of Bath, UK.

summary Façade systems are to a great extent responsible for both the energy-performance and overall aesthetic qualities of a building. The study presented in this paper explores the tectonic integration of a distributed computer network and the façade of a high-rise tower through the use of ETFE cushions, exploiting the soft nature of this material to embed a sensor network to provide touch-responsive changes of opacity in the façade, potentially improving the energy-efficiency of a building, and promoting a novel kind of dialogue between a space and its inhabitants. We propose that the inclusion of computer networks and displays in the built environment necessarily leads to new design philosophies that solve tectonically the dialogue between traditional materials and technological devices, and we put forward the first results of a research into a novel implementation of electrochromic ‘smart’ cushions that allows for changing opacities of the façade elements of a building in response to human touch.

summary In any built environment, there exist certain subtle stimuli that affect the occupants’ cognitive processes and performance. This research intends to identify: (1) what environmental stimuli an office building would generate that could affect the habitants’ cognitive ability, and (2) how the habitants react to these stimuli. The goals of the study are to develop a new method for using immersive virtual reality to represent a built environment for simulating environmental impact, and to discover factors that could influence habitants’ cognitive performance in a space. It is expected that the discoveries could advance the application of virtual reality to study human cognition in architecture.

title Physically Walking in Digital Spaces - A Virtual Reality Installation for Exploration of Historical Heritage

summary Immersive Virtual Reality Systems have been extensively used during recent years for the exploration of architectonic spaces. This paper describes how the use of transitable immersive virtual reality systems, that is, those that allow the user to physically walk while exploring the virtual world, can greatly empower the experience of perception of space in architecture. The text describes a particular example of one installation of this kind that was developed by the authors and how it was implemented for the interactive experience of the virtual reconstruction of a housing unit on a pre-roman settlement. This installation is open to the public as part of a permanent exhibition and constitutes the final output of the research at this time.

title The Bishopsgate Tower Case Study

summary This paper summarizes the ongoing research on the Bishopsgate Tower in the City of London designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. We present a pre-rational geometry computational solution targeting a constraint-aware exploration of the architectural design-space, while interactively optimizing building performance in terms of constructability and cost-efficiency. We document a novel approach in building metrics optimization supported by parametric technologies and embedded analytical algorithms. The process is indicative of how computational methods will develop in the future and help designers find solutions for increasingly complex spaces.

summary There is a continuous and urgent need for disaster relief in Thailand and countries suffering from floods and tsunami impact. Based on this issue, design and planning software for temporary housing project has been developed, as well as the process and guideline for implementation. This paper describes a unique coupling of interactive 3D virtual environment with parametric designing in order to manage disaster relief project more efficiently. Architects and planners can use the functionality of software on both design simulation and project evaluation aspects. We need to provide correct information to help people making decision when they are in disaster. So the disaster relief decision support system must offer proper information of crisis management focused on people, place, and process. One of the main features of software is the relationship modeling of essential factors such as number of people, houses, budget, time, and space. This automatic temporary houses generation and space planning is simulated for land use and layout plan design with cost estimation analysis. The system components were proposed to a new disaster relief system in alternative approach. Using community-based development will not cost budget but required people participation. Our software’s space coordination will start and centered from available space in school or temple with sufficient infrastructure. After essential factors are inputted, appropriated number of temporary houses, public facilities, and management guideline will be generated to support further planning decision. Our core system was developed on Java and Swing Technology, empowered by real-time 3D rendering CAD engine. In addition, “Virtools” as our Authoring Tools was applied to improve design interaction and explore rapid software prototyping. At the end, we discuss the comparison between real situations in Thailand and appropriate design standardization, which should be reconsidered how to manage crisis with the limitation of time and budget from government.

summary This paper looks at the question of freedom and control in relation to the design of interactive media architecture projects for public spaces. It speculates on how designers of responsive systems must negotiate the relationship between their designs, the users’ participation and the protocols of existing public spaces. Using Stafford Beer’s formulation for a “liberty machine” it reflects on strategies for under-specifying such systems, to make them more adaptable to change. Questions that it poses include: How open should a system be? What role should public participation play in its instantiation? Who should maintain it? Who or what should control its objectives?

It is intended to generate new geometry using a motion capture system as design input device and then to develop it to design interior space and products such as furniture from data extracted from human motion. In order to produce a ubiquitous and comfortable environment, performance modeling focusing on the relationships between space and physical motion is needed. Making an object of complex shape is thought to be a new application of motion capture technology. This research proves that the numeric data of body actions can be transferred and developed to object shapes.

summary The particular requirements of kinetic façades are discussed in relation to a general model for future CAAD research – a 3D digital prototype based on (1) the concurrent evaluation of quantitative and qualitative performance over time (2) the calibration of geometry and physics to materiality and mechanics. Concurrent performance in the case of kinetic façades is determined by the dual role as environmental screens and the socio-cultural function as the public face of architecture. From these principles a framework is proposed that informs the conceptualisation of software that will address unique requirements - the design of façades as process systems that perform over a range of time scales.

summary This paper outlines the design, execution and analysis of a user evaluation experiment using Augmented Reality (AR) in an urban design studio. The aim of the experiment was to gauge the differences between two interfaces in regard to their impact on the design process. The two conditions of the experiment were a direct manipulating tangible user interface and a pen-like 3D manipulation interface. Findings include differences in perceived object presence, performance measures, perceived performance and variations in the communication patterns. These findings have implications for the integration of this technology in a praxis relevant design work flow.

summary The hybrid system in textile composites refers to the structural logic defined by Heino Engel, which describes a system that integrates multiple structural behaviors to achieve an equilibrium state (Engel 2007). This research explores a material system that can demonstrate a hybrid material behavior defined by the differentiated tensile and bending-active forces in a single, seamless knitted composite material. These behaviors were installed during the materialization phase and activated during the composite formation process. Here, the material formation involves two interdependent processes: 1) development of the knitted textile with integrated tensile and reinforced materials and 2) development of the composite by applying pre-stress and vacuuming the localized area with reinforcements in a consistent resin-based matrix. The flat bed industrial weft knitting machine has been utilized to develop the knitted textile component of the system with a controlled knit structure. This enables us to control the material types, densities, and cross sections with integrated multiple layers/ribs and thus, the performance of the textile at the scale of fiber structure. Both of these aspects were researched in parallel, using physical and computational methods informed and shaped by the potentials and constraints of each other. A series of studies has been utilized to develop small-scale prototypes that depict the potential of the hybrid textile composite as the generator of complex form and bending active structures. Ultimately, it indicates the possibilities of hybrid textile composite materials as self-structuring lightweight components that can perform as highly articulated and differentiated seamless architectural elements that are capable of transforming the perception of light, space, and touch.

summary This ongoing research argues for novel strategies to integrate structural analysis data in an architectural design approach. Instead of a linear procedure of synthesis, analysis and post-rationalisation a synthesis/analysis loop is installed that uses structural analysis data as design driver from early on. The approach is not aiming for a pure force-driven form-finding or optimization process but regards structural performance as one design criteria among others. Equilibrium between multiple parameters is aspired instead of a single-parameter-optimum. The research is conducted by a custom-made digital interface between a 3d modelling software and an application for structural analysis of space frames structures. Surfaces are translated into meshes with supports at user-defined nodes and then exposed to its dead load in the structural analysis software. The resulting nodal deviation is feed into an algorithm that steers the appropriate reaction towards the local stresses and deviations, taking into account the mesh topology, its supports and their position in the mesh. The initial mesh is optimized in shape transformed back into a double-layer surface model in the 3d software which evolves into an interconnected two-layer space frame. An instant feedback from synthesis to analysis and vice versa is installed. Analysing techniques migrate into the realm of synthesis.

summary Energy consumption in buildings is responsible for about 40% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. It is quite feasible that the energy consumption in buildings can be halved, but energy performance analysis must be integral to the entire design process. This imperative has led the authors to propose that architecture, engineering and science should be syncretized in the design process. This syncretization shares some features of the rhizomatic approach introduced by Deleuze and Guattari (2007). In rhizomatic systems all points can be, and should be connected. A rhizome can be considered as a space that develops, not from a point but from milieux. In the expansion of a rhizome, elements of the system do not follow tracings of other elements but they form a map of new vistas. Likewise, a syncretic approach is oblivious to the traditional boundaries between architecture, engineering and science. Syncretization has the potential to enrich the intellectual lives of architects, scientists and engineers, and it would have profoundly beneficial performative benefits.

title Doing Cultural Heritage Using the Torque Game Engine: Supporting Indigenous Storytelling in a 3D Virtual Environment

summary Digital Songlines (DSL) is an Australasian CRC for Interaction Design (ACID) project that is developing protocols, methodologies and toolkits to facilitate the collection, education and sharing of indigenous cultural heritage knowledge. This paper outlines the goals achieved over the last three years in the development of the Digital Songlines game engine (DSE) toolkit that is used for Australian Indigenous storytelling. The project explores the sharing of indigenous Australian Aboriginal storytelling in a sensitive manner using a game engine. The use of the game engine in the field of Cultural Heritage is expanding. They are an important tool for the recording and re-presentation of historically, culturally, and sociologically significant places, infrastructure, and artefacts, as well as the stories that are associated with them. The DSL implementation of a game engine to share storytelling provides an educational interface. Where the DSL implementation of a game engine in a CH application differs from others is in the nature of the game environment itself. It is modelled on the 'country' (the 'place' of their heritage which is so important to the clients' collective identity) and authentic fauna and flora that provides a highly contextualised setting for the stories to be told. This paper provides an overview on the development of the DSL game engine.

title SecondLife: A Computer-Mediated Tool for Distance-Learning in Architecture Education?

summary Despite the importance of distance learning for its ability to reach a wide audience, easiness to access materials, and its lower cost compared to traditional learning, architecture education has not been well served by distance education. This is because it has a higher level of learning objectives, it is taught by coaching methodologies, and involves nonverbal forms of communication. One of the most common learning methods used in the design studio is the Criticism/Critique, which is a graphic and oral type of communication between the tutor and the students. In this investigation, Second Life, a massive multi-user online virtual environment that offers three-dimensional spatial capabilities via Avatars impersonation, is used as a computer-mediated tool for text and graphic-based communication in a distance learning situation. The study describes a demonstration experiment where students had to communicate with their tutor, display and describe their projects at a distance, in a purposely designed criticism space in SecondLife. The main objective of this paper is to observe and document the effects and the use of SecondLife virtual environment as an online 3D graphical-based tool of computer-mediated communication in distance learning in architecture education. The study also answers some questions: How well did the students use the tools of the medium provide? Was there a sense of personal communication and realism gained through using Avatars in the virtual environment? Did SecondLife provide a successful means of communication for a graphic-based context? And what are the students’ opinions about the learning environment? Using multiple methods of data collection, mainly based on an electronic observation of the experiment, questioning the participants before and after the experiment, and the analysis of the chat transcripts, the study presents descriptive results of the experiment, and discusses its main features. Proposals for modifications are made for future replications.

title Efficiency of Lightweight Structural Forms: The Case of Treelike Structures - A comparative Structural Analysis

summary This work addresses the structural efficiency of lightweight tree-like structures for three case studies: Stuttgart Airport, Beaverton Library, and Thermal Bad Oeyenhausen. The case studies are simulated using Build simulation software, to determine the stresses induced in each structure. The material efficiency and shapes areexplored in terms of load bearing structures. Hybrids of the above structures are formed to compare the pattern morphology used by various types of tree-like structure and assess the structural behavior. In addition, (steel, wood and concrete) materials are compared to determine which would have better structural performance. In order to show the resemblance between the growing trees and the tree-like structures, an example of both cases is simulated and stresses evaluated. Results show that, in general, the minimum stress and deformations are obtained for steel. Structures made out of this material also exhibit higher load bearing capability, optimum stability factors and the best geometric efficiency, inspite of higher specific weight (10 times wood, and 3 times concrete).

summary One of the primary features of solar passive design is the orientation of a building on a particular latitude. The client of Information Technology demands testing, validity, practicality and sustainability of a building project before execution. The computer based simulations are the only practical way to predict the complex energy performance and analysis for a large number of passive design solutions. This paper investigates the optimum residential building orientation having various zones, located in Lahore, Pakistan, with the help of Energy Simulation program. It is concluded that with the help of software, it is possible to orient the residential plan with the minimum solar gain of the required living zones.
