summary Differences in the preferred modes of representation of architects and their clients create challenges to their collaboration in the design process. Traditional two-dimensional drawings such as plans, sections and elevations form the backbone of architectural representation, anchoring text labels to record relevant non-graphical information. Nominally geometric “slices” through the proposed building volume, these drawings employ abstractions and conventions unique to professional practice. In contrast, non-architects think about building configuration largely through experiential or photographic perspective. This challenge increases over the life of the project. Simple drawings, such as those used in schematic design, are easily understood by all parties. However, as the building design develops the architects encode more and more design detail through the drawing conventions of construction documents, inadvertently making this detail less and less accessible to non-architects. We present DVIN, a prototype system that uses coordinated plan and perspective views for navigation of building information models, linking the information to an individual’s spatial navigation skills rather than their document navigation skills. This web-based application was developed using Java and VRML. The prototype makes it easier for naive users to locate and query building information, whether they are a client, a facility manager, or possibly an emergency responder.

title Emergent Form from Structural Optimisation of the Voronoi Polyhedra Structure

summary In the course of the exploration of computational means in the architectural design process, in order to investigate more complex, adaptive geometries, the Voronoi diagram has recently gained some attention, being a three-dimensional space-filling structure which is modular but not repetitive. The project looks at the Voronoi diagram as a load-bearing structure, and whether it can be useful for structural optimisation. Hereby the edges of the Voronoi polyhedra are regarded as structural members of a statical system, which then is assessed by structural analysis software. Results seem to indicate that the Voronoi approach produces a very specific structural as well as spatial type of order. Through the dislocation of the Voronoi cells, the statical structure becomes more complex through emergent topology changes, and the initially simple spatial system becomes much more complex thorough emerging adjacencies and interconnections between spaces. The characteristics of the emerging form, however, lie rather in the complexity how shifted spaces and parts are fitted together, than in a radical overall emergent geometry. Spatially as well as a structurally, the form moves from a simple modular repetitive system towards a more complex adaptive one, with interconnected parts which cannot stand alone but rather form an organic whole.

title A Choice Model of Mass Customized Modular Housing by Internet Aided Design

summary The Internet has increased the opportunities to apply the concept of mass customization to customer interaction by tailoring the content to individual needs. Within limited design parameters, customers can determine what options they wish by participating in the flow of the design process from the beginning. This concept has already been implemented in the computer, clothing, and automobile industries, but it has not been fully integrated in architecture, especially the housing industry which is more directly related to personal life style. The industry lacks a process that will lead to the customization of homes that respond to the unique values and needs of the occupants. The paper describes the relationship of client’s requirements and available design options of the proposed system by examples of its current prototype. By integrating the nature of modularity in prefabricated housing design, a proposed web-based design system will provide information filtering questionnaires to assist customers in selecting appropriate design components. A methodology has been developed that can generate design options based on the client’s needs and available modular components from selected product suppliers making it possible to simulate the final design before processing orders for assembling and manufacturing.

title Meta-Cognitive Mappings: Growing Neural Networks for Generative Urbanism

summary This paper examines the use of dynamic learning systems and adaptive topologies within neural networks models, and their implications as a tool for architectural mappings. The principal investigation is the ability of such systems to identify/ map/ model/ represent flows within dynamic data sets and identify topological relationships between these flows. A growing neural network [GNN] model is proposed, able to map dynamic data inputs over time. It is based on Kohonen’s early self-organising feature maps [SOM] and takes as its starting point previous work by CECA with neural networks in an architectural context, as well as other examples of neural gases, and GNNs, in order to develop a model capable of ‘autopoietic’ behaviour and ‘meta – learning’. The principal investigation is the ability of such a system to identify/ map/ model/ represent flows within dynamic data sets and identify topological relationships between these flows.

As a case study, the proposed neural network model has been used to map ‘urban territory’, as part of an on going architectural research project, based in North London. The project takes the notion of ‘urban territories’ rather than ‘urban space’ as the field for interrogation, as a description of temporal spatial occupation space, rather than spatial physical permanence. Furthermore, the GNN may be used to identify the relationships between unused and vacant sites along the street. In this way, the GNN may become a means of proposing architectural interventions for these spaces, so that the territories of those that occupy it and the negotiations between them are not lost.

summary In today’s global, multi-faceted society, architectural design has become a collaborative effort. Often, however, team members are separated by distance and difference in work hours. In order to keep team members connected, research groups have been developing groupware for communication and data sharing using information and communication technology. The results of recent research indicate that the systems developed are useful especially in the early phases of the architectural design process. While these systems cannot support the most important process in design collaboration— the decision making itself—they will enable team members to communicate effectively. The goal of this research is to develop a decision support groupware for the design team. As the first step, in order to enhance interaction among team members, we developed a web-based asynchronous design discussion tool named DesIBo: Design Interaction Board, such as Bulletin Board System. This paper deals with the development of DesIBo employing new concepts about entering and browsing comments and evaluating that system. In the future, we will add a decision-support function to DesIBo.

title Surfing the city: An architecture for context-aware urban exploration

summary Web surfing, the act of following links of interest with no pre-defined search goal, is a paradigm that can be translated to the physical realm of urban exploration. With mobile computing technology and its supporting infrastructure becoming ever more ubiquitous, a user's digital device can be transformed into a portal that connects their physical environment with the virtual, providing instant access to a plethora of information that can influence and guide their interactions with the city. This paper describes the technical aspects of a context-aware system for urban exploration based on the paradigm of web surfing. An implementation is presented that demonstrates a browsing style of interaction with an urban environment through context-based navigational prompts.

title The relationship of spatial experience, previous mathematics achievement and gender with perceived ability in learning engineering drawing

summary This study examined the relationships among three factors namely spatial experience, previous mathematics achievement and gender, with students’ perceived ability to learn Engineering Drawing at the foundation year. A correlational and regressional descriptive design was utilized involving 224 students of secondary schools. Two survey instruments comprising Spatial Experience Questionnaire (SEQ) and Student Questionnaire (SQ) were administered to elicit participants’ demographics and their perceived ability to learn the course. Correlational analysis found a significant correlation between perceived ability and spatial experience. Perceived ability was slightly correlated with previous mathematics achievement and gender. Regressional analysis attested spatial experience as the only variable to have a strong predictive power to account for variation in perceived ability.

summary Spurring new and innovative building design will be critical to the urban energy and economic future of the nation. The operation of completed buildings account for 48% of the nation’s annual greenhouse gas emissions, and 76% of all electricity generated by U.S. power plants goes to supply the building sector. Therefore developing and applying new and innovative sustainable building design will have a measurable impact on the environment. Recent studies show sustainable building design is closely linked to system integration, where various components of a building work in confluence to produce synergetic benefits. As a result, a critical component of sustainable design involves a clear understanding of building systems operation, interaction, and the selection parameters. A consideration of suitable building systems, gauging their interaction, and proposing well integrated systems can lead to producing efficient models of sustainable buildings with minimal impact on the environment. The following paper outlines the progress on a project entitled “Building Literacy: the Integration of Building Technology and Design in Architectural Education.” The project develops a digital tool for teaching/learning architectural technology from an integrated systems perspective. The project attempts to immerse students in a simulated environment that is based on the real life practice of architecture. The project accomplishes this by harnessing the capabilities of simulation and dynamic modeling programs, as well as the state of art graphic media, to create compelling and rewarding reasons for students’ engagement in the lear ning process. The project involves a multidisciplinary team of faculty from Florida International University, University at Buffalo the State University of New York, and Iowa State University and is funded by the US Department of Education for the period of 2007-2011.

title Tracking Design Development through Decomposing Sketching Processes

summary We conducted a protocol study of the architectural sketching process. We decompose the process into process flows to explore the extent to which it expresses concept development in schematic and refined design phases. We track the development of design concepts in these phases by following the process flows of individual sketched strokes. We argue that each stroke drawn by the designer reveals a probability of an embedded concept, and that this concept is either promoted and propagated throughout the design phases, or blocked while designing. We expand the notion of lateral and vertical transformation in design by introducing a set of processes described as cross propagation, lateral promotion and vertical promotion.

title Digital Masterplanning: Computing Urban Design

summary The digital revolution has finally reached urban design as one of the last design communities not very familiar with computing. This is despite the city and geography being the natural fields for systems analogy and digital models of mathematical and statistical simulation were developed in the 60s and 70s for urban planning, much before industrial or architectural design. The recent arrival of urban design simulations is however not as innovative and radical as their 50 year old counterparts since they use computing solely for policy visualization, quantity evaluation or pattern generation. The Computational Design and Research Group [CDR] at Aedas|R&D started in 2007 to develop an open platform of lightweight applications – Digital Masterplanning – in collaboration with partners from academia and industry to provide methods for urban design, based on computational methods called meta-heuristic algorithms. An attempt to encode empirical knowledge and design assumptions into simulations is described where designers can assemble the resulting applications according to scales and brief into custom workflows.

summary The purpose of this study is the development of a tool by which citizens who are non-specialists can design a regional revitalisation project. Therefore, a 3D CAD / VR (3-dimensional computer-aided design / virtual reality) combination system was developed by using SketchUP Pro, GIMP, and UC-win / Road. This system has the advantages of low cost and easy operation. The utility of the system was verified as a result of applying the developed prototype system in the Super Science High School program for high school students created by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan. It has been used for two years, since 2007. In addition, the characteristics of the VR made by the non-specialists were considered.

summary When performing an architectural design or an environmental design with complicated geographical features, soil calculation is needed to study the soil balance between the amount of cut and the amount of bank. In recent years, construction activities involving small environmental load have been called for. Therefore, it is necessary to stop the discharge of surplus soil. Moreover, the result of soil calculation can show that the landscape after completion may change greatly. A system which can study soil calculation and landscape simultaneously is called for. Furthermore, to correspond to the citizen participation type design process, a system which can allow understanding of a plan by stakeholders who do not have professional knowledge is called for. This research studies landscape and soil calculation with the aim of developing a possible system. A 3D-VR system which studies environmental design is extended and a soil calculation function in which high precision calculation and visual expression are possible is developed.

summary In the preparation of urban designs, it is important for the designer to understand the space feature of the project district and to obtain the design resource from the site. In our design studio, students take pictures of a point of interest (POI) in the project district and discuss the design concept of the district based on the photographs. To share the photographs obtained by the students during the field survey along with the attribute information and shooting positions, the present authors have developed a Web-based image archive system as an effective resource for a design studio. This system registers the photographs taken in the surveying district on GoogleMap and simultaneously displays the images on a three-dimensional city model. In this paper, we discuss the development of a Map-based Repository of Image (MRI) system to share the photographs of a city. Moreover, we attempt to evaluate its pedagogical effect in the design studio.

summary The purpose of the research is to study the detail of motion of various subjects with differences in physical attributes. The research outlines how different physique produces different behavioural patterns based upon mass and proportion. This research focuses on ‘walk motion’ to identify the differences in each subject’s physical attributes by sampling subjects of physical differences. This experiment employs Vicon8i® Optical Motion Capture system (MOCAP) to study the detail of human motion by extracting the subjects’ core motions for analysis with pre-defined actions. The research used the findings to establish the relationship between height and weight against motion frequencies in 3D space.

summary Residents’ active participation is necessary for a feasible community design from the planning stage to maintenance and management. it is necessary to show information related to a plan efficiently to facilitate understanding, and to consider a plan in a limited time. The purpose of this study is to develop a Community Space Design system (CSDS) that can use GIS data and Real-time simulation, in order to support comprehension of 3D area information during continuous development. Using CSDS, participants were able to treat various GIS data fixed, and a subject called the division and the disaster prevention of a community, which the object ground is holding can be understood visually on the same 3D space as real space. Because their solution was found, the design was accepted quickly.

summary To depict characteristics of historical buildings, digital archives must display visual information about structures and their construction. This study defines the components used for three-dimensional (3D) models of framework construction. Framework construction has heretofore portrayed structures through animation using VHS or Hi-Vision video. This paper describes a method to facilitate exhibition through interactive simulation using animation and real-time images. Furthermore, a Tablet MR can be used as an effective simulation tool for studying historical buildings in on-site models. For education about historical wooden-framework architecture, increased interactive potential according to users’ needs will be increasingly necessary.
