title The Role of Virtual Reality in Built Environment Education

summary This study builds upon previous research on the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) within the built environment curriculum and aims to investigate the role of VR and three-dimensional (3D) computer modelling on learning and teaching in a school of the built environment. In order to achieve this aim, a number of academic experiences were analysed to explore the applicability and viability of 3D computer modelling and VR into built environment subject areas. Although two-dimensional (2D) representations have been greatly accepted by built environment professions and education, 3D computer representations and VR applications, offering interactivity and immersiveness, are not yet widely accepted. The study attempts to understand the values and challenges of integrating visualisation technologies into built environment teaching and investigates tutors’ perceptions, opinions and concerns with respect to these technologies. The study reports on the integration process and considers how 3D computer modelling and VR technologies can combine with, and extend, the existing range of learning and teaching methods appropriate to different disciplines and programme areas.

summary Urban design is concerned with the shape, the surface and the physical arrangement of all kinds of urban elements, the basic components that make up the built environment, at the level of buildings, spaces and human activities. It is also concerned with the non-visual aspects of the environment, such as noise, wind and temperature and humidity. The city square is a particular urban element which can take many forms and its geometrical relationships such as maximum dimensions, ratio of width to length and building height to length have been analysed for centuries (Alberti 1475), (Vitruvius 1550), (Sitte 1889), (Corbett 2004). Within the current urban design process there are increasing examples of three dimensional computer representations which allow the user to experience a visual sense of the geometry of city squares in an urban landscape. Computer-aided design and Virtual Reality technologies have recently contributed to this visual assessment, but there have been limited attempts at 3D computer representations which allow the user to experience a greater sense of the urban space. This paper will describe a survey of computer tools which could support a more holistic approach to urban design and which could be used to simulate a number of urban texture and urban quality aspects. It will provide a systematic overview of currently available software that could support the simulation of building density, height, colour and style as well as conditions relating to noise, shading, heat, natural and artificial light. It will describe a methodology for the selection and filtering of appropriate computer applications and offer an initial evaluation of these tools for the analysis and representation of the three-dimensional geometry, urban texture and urban quality of city centre spaces. The paper is structured to include an introduction to the design criteria relating to city centre spaces which underpins this research. Next the systematic review of computer software will be described, and selected tools will undergo initial evaluation. Finally conclusions will be drawn and areas for future research identified.

summary This paper begins by exploring matter as an aggregated system of energy transactions and modulations. With this in mind, it examines the notion of energy driven form finding as a design methodology that can simultaneously negotiate physical, environmental and fabrication considerations. The digital workspace enables this notion of form finding to re-establish itself in the world of architecture through a range of analytic tools that algorithmically encode real world physics. Simulating the spatial and energetic characteristics of reality enables virtual “form generation models that recognize the laws of physics and are able to create ‘minimum’ surfaces for compression, bending [and] tension” (Cook 2004). The language of energy, common in engineering and materials science, enables a renewed trans-disciplinary dialogue that addresses significant historic disjunctions such as the professional divide between architects and engineers. Design becomes a science of exploring abstracted energy states to discover a suitable resonance with which to tune the built environment. ¶ A case study of one particular method of energy driven form finding is presented. Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) is a generative engineering technique developed at RMIT University. It appropriates natural growth strategies to determine optimum forms that respond to structural criteria by reorganizing their topology. This dynamic topology response enables structural optimization to become an integrated component of design exploration. A sequence of investigations illustrates the flexibility and trans-disciplinary benefits of this approach. Using BESO as a tool for design rather than purely for structural optimization fuses the creative approach of the architect with the pragmatic approach of the engineer, enabling outcomes that neither profession could develop in isolation. The BESO case study alludes to future design processes that will facilitate a coherent unfolding of design logic comparable to morphogenesis.

summary Given that the probability of a catastrophic earthquake occurring is quite high in Japan compared to other countries; major cities like Tokyo operate many disaster-education facilities for informing citizens about earthquake preparedness. Since an earthquake occurs suddenly with almost no time to react, daily preparation plays a greater role in reducing damage than for other types of disasters. In fact, statistics from the Kobe earthquake in 1995 show the largest cause of injury to have been falling furniture, something that could have been prevented with proper precautionary measures.

summary This paper presents our attempts on virtual reality curriculum development for the past four years as one of the multimedia-based degrees. It will give an overview, goals and outcomes of the virtual reality (VR) curriculum with varieties of virtual reality systems, interactions and design theories used at different level of studies. It also highlights issues related to designing virtual spaces and the approach used to suggest a good storytelling. This paper will also explore, report and demonstrate the use of non-immersive virtual reality system based on a study in a problem-based learning environment of a virtual reality majoring. Following early encouraging first round results this paper concludes that experiential design could be one of the effective approaches for a problem-based learning and richer content creation of virtual environment (VE) design. It also suggests that the presence of motions, different field of views, interactivities and stereoscopic visions are attributes of three-dimensional (3D) visualization that contribute to better understanding and designing virtual environments.

summary The paper is intended to present the methodological structure of web-based mechanisms related to planning procedures, with particular focus on social participation. The tools provide a link between planners and local community members, allow the acquisition of different sets of data, provide detailed information on the environment and planned transformations, serve as a source of detailed information on the procedure, and last but not least play an educational role, which contributes greatly to the understanding of sustainability, cultural sensitivity, environmental issues, planning concerns on a wider scale. Web-related technology provides many opportunities to reach for a wider social participation and simultaneously to receive more representative feedback from the local community. The article will discuss in detail some results of the implementation of the Citizen project – a web-based platform supporting the social participation.

summary Nowadays, thanks to the telecommunication revolution and therefore the massive spread of Internet, we have seen the come up of international architectural offices with branches located in different continent, working in a collaborative fashion, surpassing physical and time frontiers. At the same time, the multidisciplinary work between designers, architects, engineers, programmers and even biologist, between others, have been taking place in the new network society. All transformations also supported by the arising of FOSS (Free Open Source Software) and the virtual communities behind them, which allow the creation of non-traditional or specific software, the association between disciplines, and also, the formation of meeting scenarios for a mixture of individuals coming up with multiple motivation to coexist in collaborative environment. Furthermore, it is possible to argue that Open Source applications are also the reflection of a social movement, based on the open creation and exchange of information and knowledge. Do the appeared of FOSS compel us to re-think our working and teaching methods? Do they allow new modes of organizing and collaborating inside our architectural practices?. This paper would like to address these questions, by presenting the results of the “Experience Design” course, which by implementing teaching methods based on Open Source principles and cutting-edge tools, seeks to approach students to these new “way of do”, knowledge and methodologies, and overall, focus them on the science behind the computer. This paper describes the “Experience Design” course, in which architectural graduate students of Universidad Diego Portales (Chile), put for first time their hands on the creation of interactive interfaces. By acquiring basic knowledge of programming and physical computing, students built in a collaborative way a responsive physical installation. The course use as applications “Processing” and “Arduino”. The first one is an Open Source programming language and environment for users who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It has a visual context and serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool. Processing is a project initiated by Ben Fry and Casey Reas, at the MIT Media Lab (www.processing.org). The second is an Open Source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino has a microcontroller (programmed with Processing language) which can sense the environment by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators (www.arduino.cc). Both environments shared a growing community of people working in related projects and extending useful assistance for beginners. In this paper it is presented the current state of the pilot course and some of the initials results collected during the process. Students and teacher’s debates and evaluations of the experience have been exposed. Together with a critical evaluation in relation to the accomplishment of the effort of place together different disciplines in one collaborative project akin, architecture, design, programming and electronic. Finally, futures modifications of the course are discussed, together with consideration to take in account at the moment of bring Open Source and programming culture into the student curriculum.

summary This paper describes an experiment in which a virtual learning environment was used in the context of an architectural design course. The objective was to evaluate the capability of the learning environment used to support the interactions needed, between teacher-student and between students, for the establishment of a process of discussion and development of architectural design. Some limitations imposed either by the virtual learning environment or by the context of the experiment itself were identified and also positive points, such as the possibility to register the whole design process. All this data subside studies about the process of teaching/learning architectural design validating this experiment and allowing the promotion of new experiments in the different stages of this academic process.

summary Milestone figures of architecture all have their different views on what comes first, form or function. They also vary in their definitions of creativity. Apparently, creativity is very strongly related to ideas and how they can be generated. It is also correlated with the process of thinking and developing. Creative products, whether architectural or otherwise, and whether tangible or intangible, are originated from ‘good ideas’ (Elnokaly, Elseragy and Alsaadani, 2008). On one hand, not any idea, or any good idea, can be considered creative but, on the other hand, any creative result can be traced back to a good idea that initiated it in the beginning (Goldschmit and Tatsa, 2005). Creativity in literature, music and other forms of art is immeasurable and unbounded by constraints of physical reality. Musicians, painters and sculptors do not create within tight restrictions. They create what becomes their own mind’s intellectual property, and viewers or listeners are free to interpret these creations from whichever angle they choose. However, this is not the case with architects, whose creations and creative products are always bound with different physical constraints that may be related to the building location, social and cultural values related to the context, environmental performance and energy efficiency, and many more (Elnokaly, Elseragy and Alsaadani, 2008). Remarkably, over the last three decades computers have dominated in almost all areas of design, taking over the burden of repetitive tasks so that the designers and students can focus on the act of creation. Computer aided design has been used for a long time as a tool of drafting, however in this last decade this tool of representation is being replaced by simulation in different areas such as simulation of form, function and environment. Thus, the crafting of objects is moving towards the generation of forms and integrated systems through designer-authored computational processes. The emergence and adoption of computational technologies has significantly changed design and design education beyond the replacement of drawing boards with computers or pens and paper with computer-aided design (CAD) computer-aided engineering (CAE) applications. This paper highlights the influence of the evolving transformation from Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Computational Design (CD) and how this presents a profound shift in creative design thinking and education. Computational-based design and simulation represent new tools that encourage designers and artists to continue progression of novel modes of design thinking and creativity for the 21st century designers. Today computational design calls for new ideas that will transcend conventional boundaries and support creative insights through design and into design. However, it is still believed that in architecture education one should not replace the design process and creative thinking at early stages by software tools that shape both process and final product which may become a limitation for creative designs to adapt to the decisions and metaphors chosen by the simulation tool. This paper explores the development of Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Computational Design (CD) Tools and their impact on contemporary design education and creative design.

On the one hand it focusses on how to use virtual reality as an extended tool to generate spatial design by building up and interacting with a three-dimensional digital model. On the other hand it describes - based on a case study - the relation between perception, interaction and immersion in virtual environments. Both approaches can be interconnected to a continues design process, that allows the designer to create, manipulate, visualize and decide on spatial concepts in a holistic three-dimensional simulation.

summary The contemporary “built environment” as conceived by designers – be it actual or virtual; be it architecture, landscape, industrial products or, more purely, art – is increasingly generated using powerful computational tools that are shaping the culture of the design professions, so much so that the phrase “digital culture” aptly applies. Designers are rightly inclined to believe that the emerging contemporary landscape – especially in thriving global cities like New York, London and Tokyo – has recently been and will continue to be shaped in important ways by digital design. That will surely be the case. However, design does not exist in a material vacuum. Someone pays for it. This essay argues that the primary shaper of global cities today is another “digital culture”, one defined by the confluence of professions and institutions that constitute our global financial markets. The essay explores the common origins of these two cultures – design and finance; the prescient insights of Archigram into the cybernetic future of cities; the spatial implications of nomadic “digitized” capital and the hazards of desensitizing – in many ways, dematerializing – the professional practices of design and finance. The purpose of the essay is not to establish primacy of one over the other. Especially in the case of urban design, they are interdependent. The purpose is to explore the connection.

summary Digitization of three-dimensional sculptures is a well-developed technology for preserving antiquities. After digitizing they could be represented in various computerized spaces, virtually, such as in cyberspace, in virtual reality space, and in augmented reality…etc. However, contrary to physical demonstration of 3D sculptures in traditional museums or exhibitions, the virtual representation may lose some degrees of reality of sculptures or create various ways of interactions for viewing sculptures. In this research, there are three kinds of environments for re-presenting 3D sculptures: the physical reality (PA) in a space, virtual reality (VR) with a big screen, and augmented reality (AR) of Head-Mounted Display (HMD). By utilizing questionnaire to analyze users’ perceptions and requirements of viewing 3D sculptures, this research will compare several aspects, such as visualization, operational interactions, and psychological feelings in the experiment of three exhibition environments. Finally, based on the results from questionnaire, we attempt to propose a suitable environment for exhibiting the virtual 3D sculptures.

summary Recent game technology ascends development of low-cost virtual environment to the next level in two domains : reality representation and user interaction or engagement. In architecture and urban design realm, realistic 3D representation become more important in such way of conceptualizing ideas and analyzing the context of design problem. This research will present development of virtual urban environment using game engine technology. Aim of this research is to promote game engine as a tool for visual representation, visual analysis and further basic tool for urban design study. summary Computer Aided Architectural Design software is a necessary tool for the architectural design of a visible object or model. In residential development, an estimation of time/cost corresponding to the design is needed in order to complete its successful project. But available feasibility supporting tools usually lacks ability to share their information. To solve this limitation, this research proposes a design of Graphic User Interface (GUI) for collaborative financial feasibility through an architectural design process in housing project. The development of the GUI starts from collecting some information and requirement from National Housing Authority of Thailand. A heuristic decision making approach based on financial analysis are then designed for both design processes and feasibility processes of the project. Finally, design of the GUI is an integration of CAAD engines, design standards and financial feasibility analysis. Proposed GUI for collaborative financial feasibility is also tested and verified with some information from sample past projects of the National Housing Authority. From the experimental results, This GUI allows designers to improve the design of the project in real-time by inspecting the result of their design via the part of the architectural design-oriented GUI called myMonitoring and Scratch Pad. Together with planning, collaborative financial feasibility is focusing on the four main financial parameters which illustrated the possible chance of the project: Net Present Value (NPV), Benefit-Cost Ratio (B/C), Internal Rate of Return (IRR), and Payback Period. The core system was developed on Java Technology such as JSP and Swing empowered by 3D game engine. In addition, “Virtools” as an authoring tool was applied to improve interactive 3D virtual environment and explore rapid online system prototyping.

summary This work aims to analyze how augmented reality can be used to complement the urban cultural heritage experience with a three-dimensional model of historic building already demolished, the Monroe Palace. It analyzes possibilities and limitations of the current off-the-shelf technology of A.R. applications for architecture studies. Finally, the Layar application was used to develop a georeferenced augmented reality test with the electronic model of the building in the place where it was once built. Augmented reality was used to create a new territoriality for the lost heritage, an informational territory as defined by Lemos (2008) for a virtual heritage.

summary This study examines an application of Augmented Reality technology (AR) for Korean Cultural Traditional Buildings, specifically, the Namdaemun Gate, "National Treasure No 1" of the Republic of Korea. Unfortunately, in February 2008, the Namdaemun Gate burned down, despite the efforts of many firemen, as the main difficulty was getting the fire under control without any structural knowledge of the wooden building. Hence, with the great advances in digital technology, an application of virtual technical information to traditional buildings is needed, and the new technology of AR offers many such advantages for digital architectural design and construction fields. While AR is already being considered as new design approach for architecture, outdoor AR is another practical application that can take advantage of new wearable computer equipment (Head-mounted display also know as HMD, position and orientation sensors, and mobile computing) to superimpose virtual graphics of traditional buildings (in this case, Namdaemun Gate) in a real outdoor scene. Plus, outdoor AR also allows the user to move freely around and inside a 3D virtual construction, thereby offering important training opportunities, for example, specific structural information in the case of firemen and mission planning in the case of a real-life emergency. In this example, the proposed outdoor AR system is expected to provide important educational information on traditional wooden building for architects, archaeologists, and engineers, while also assisting firemen to protect such special buildings.

summary The basic principles, methods, and digital tools for the analysis of room acoustics are the topic of this paper. Students have been using these analysis and simulation tools during a seminar at Stuttgart University to systematically investigate acoustical situations. Additionally to lecturing on the underlying physics of room acoustics we were trying to convey the impact of geometry on room acoustics and therefore the impact of room acoustics on shapes in architecture. This paper describes the implementation of a real time simulation module for room acoustics within our Virtual Reality System.

summary This paper describes our research on environment-behavior simulation and focuses on the modeling of built environments using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM). Our environment-behavior simulation addresses the problem of predicting and evaluating the impacts of built environments on their human inhabitants. We present simulation systems comprising an agent-based virtual user model and building models created with CAD and BIM tools. We compare the use of CAD vs. BIM with two case studies for environment-behavior simulation, and describe the essential parts of modeling buildings for the simulation, including geometry modeling—how the building components are shaped, semantic modeling—what the building components are, and pattern modeling—how the building components are used by users. We conclude that a new extensible and pattern-embedded BIM system will be necessary to facilitate environment-behavior simulation.

summary A material system can be defined as a set of self-organized materials, defining a certain spatial arrangement. In architecture, this material arrangement acts as a threshold for space, though space often only appears as a by-product of the material organization. Treating space as a resulting, therefore secondary, independent product minimizes the capacity to generate architecture that is astutely aware of concerns of functionality, environment and energy. An effective arrangement of material can only be determined in relation to the spaces that it defines. When proposing a more critical approach, a material system can be seen as an intimate inter-connection and reciprocal exchange between the material construct and the spatial conditions. It is necessary to re-define material system as a system that coevolves spatial and material configurations through analysis of the resultant whole, in a process of integration and evaluation. ¶ With this understanding of material system comes an expansion in the number of criteria that are simultaneously engaged in the evolution of the design. The material characteristics, as well as the spatial components and forces (external and internal), are pressures onto the arrangement of material and space. ¶ This brings a high degree of complexity to the process. Biological systems are built on methods that resolve complex interactions through sets of simple yet extensible rules. Evolutionary Developmental Biology explains how growth is an interconnected process of external forces registering fitness into a fixed catalogue of morphological genetic tools. Translating the specific framework for biological growth into computational processes, allows the pursuit of an architecture that is fully informed by the interaction of space and material.
