summary This project examines a non-traditional method of construction generated through a digital design process that leverages digital fabrication techniques related to masonry construction. Where as architects’ use of computers first affected shape and structure, it is now additionally affecting material, construction, and craft. This design proposal explores these concepts through the production of a wall using simple configuration and reconfiguration of a repeated module adaptable to differing and unique contexts and site conditions. The masonry module is designed and built through the exploration of a CAD-CAM process. The prototypes produced investigate the repetition of a single module unit, manipulated and interlocked resulting in a continuous surface that is more than just the sum of its individual parts. The material, construction and craft of each unit informs and challenges the entire project to question the making of the masonry module into a wall.

summary Popular discourses and representations of automation in design practice have often committed to an ontology of design and creativity where both materials, media and tools are rendered passive actors in design processes. The ways in which these narratives are articulated have consequences for how the materiality of media and of construction elements is construed in both design discourses and environments. Providing a brief critical history of the mutual construction of design technologies and notions of creativity and design is a concern of this paper, which concludes with a critical re-writing of disembodied conceptions of automation in design.

title Digital Craft Meets the Ancient Art of Ceramics: Would the Bauhaus Approve?

summary The Bauhaus was founded upon the controversial premise that emergent mechanical processes offered new and creative ways to explore materials. Today, we encounter equally tendentious scenarios where the designer often appears one step further removed—automated CNC machines are driven by computational machines. Like the early activities of the Bauhaus some view digital pursuits with suspicion; however, digital design/fabrication is the “Nächster Bauhaus Bewegun” offering opportunities for design innovation equal in significance to that of the Bauhaus. This paper partially examines the theoretical implications of digital design/fabrication, then presents a collaboration between an architect and artist re-examining the architectural cladding possibilities using digital tools to shape one of mankind’s most venerable materials—ceramics.

summary Our digital carving experiments reveal ways to invite discovery into the design process. Working with sketched lines, handcrafted finishing, geometric overlay, and tool path coding can lead a designer to unexpected results. Concentrating on forming processes moving through material over time encourages open-ended play. Iteratively examining how computer operations generate carved results provides a craftsman’s understanding of tools and materials.

summary The craft of complex artefacts, questioning technological changes and reflecting social and cultural transformation used to be a common attitude in traditional artisans of the pre industrialized society. Traditional craftsman developed special knowledge and skills, implementing their own tools and techniques. After the industrial revolution, the main focus shifted to mass production, and the personalization of artefacts became labour intensive and more expensive. Simultaneously, with technical specialization and the fragmentation of knowledge, the designer’s, builder’s and manufacturer’s approach became more segregated. Currently, information technologies offer new opportunities to the craft of complex objects. The integration of digital process from conception to fabrication, can transform this situation, and as a result personalization is more affordable. Nevertheless, the introduction of these new techniques or tools is lacking a poetic synthesis for the use of technology, and the social and cultural implications that may result of this use. A competition for a public installation was an opportunity to use digital tools to conceive, manufacture and construct a complex structure with a small budget that would be impossible to attain using only traditional tools. At the same time, this project - genetic landscape- could be seen as a metaphor, alluding to the technological interference on the process of creating a new life, or a second nature.

summary This paper presents the outcomes and findings of a semester long trans-disciplinary design studio recently taught at RMIT University, involving students from the disciplines of architecture, industrial design and landscape design. The focus of the studio was to investigate the creation and appropriation of tools for innovative design processes. Drawing on craft theory and theories of design and computation, this paper illustrates how tools can transgress disciplinary boundaries and investigates how an understanding of the intricate relationship between tools, techniques, the media they operate in and the design outcome is the premise of a more informed design approach.

summary This empirical research project is a didactical teaching method intended to introduce students interested in space to theoretical architecture topics using specific computer capacities. In different variations, this teaching method was tested on students of Cultural Sciences and Architecture in Brazil and in Germany. With this method, even students without previous CAD or architecture experience can creatively design spaces. Visualization of the design process as Web design joins the individual aspects to a logical composite and applies the computer as “brain-craft” to complement handcraft. For the creative tasks, this means interaction in a complex information structure where the borders between the disciplines fade.

title A Design Interaction Tool That Adapts

summary Despite different computerised approaches have been hardwired to solve various complex practical problems; few are founded on an adaptive paradigm such that a computational model interacts with its environment, loosely wires itself and learns from experience like humans do. This book presents our attempt to craft a computational model that learns from interactions and adapts based on its experience. We draw ideas from cognitive psychology in relation to human experiential learning, particularly the notions of ?situatedness?, ?constructive memory? and ?concept formation?. When applied to design activities, which are intrinsically dynamic and interactive, this model constructs concepts from interactions between the agent, the design problem and the use of the design tool. Such a design interaction tool generates knowledge based on the agent?s grounded generalisation from contextual information in a situated manner. Adaptive behaviours emerge from coupled interactions of the system from a macroscopic and a microscopic level. This book is suitable for researchers and students interested in pursuing computerised approaches based on cognitive science and natural computing.

summary Digital fabrication practices have allowed for a level of exactitude and precision unattainable by the designer’s hand. While the design community has benefited tremendously from developments in technology, certain qualities reflective of craft have been lost as a result of the overwhelming dependency on computer-based processes. In order to reinvigorate a sense of craft and personal expression into design, modalities of education must evolve to incorporate these characteristics with contemporary digital techniques. By combining craft, digital tools and collaborative efforts a new breed of designer will emerge – one that finds a personal voice in a globalized world. This paper outlines these issues as they were explored in an experimental design studio that focused on the integration of craft with digital fabrication methods that included both students of graphic design and architecture.

summary In 1995, Robin Evans points out in his book The Projective Cast how the development of techniques changed architecture and the space inhabited in times of Gothic and early Renaissance. We see a parallel phenomenon today, where the interplay of technology and tool gives shape to new design (Kolarevic 2005). Yet in opposition to the interwoven fields of design and craft of the late Gothic, today’s building sector is enormously diversified, and a growing complexity in the building process and number of used materials can be observed. This gives an opposite point of departure into a more integrated field of design and innovation in architectural design and building industry.
