title Beyond Traditional CAAD: E-Learning supporting design thinking

summary A study based on a post-occupancy-evaluation (POE), conducted in housing developments in the region of Campinas, Brazil, evaluated quality of life and sustainability indicators. These indicators were then related to site planning design guideline for low-income public housing projects that considered recommendations for integrated community and security, street and path system and parking, public and private open space and landscaping. Since this work is part of a broader study, which aims to develop evaluation tools, the proposed design guidelines were used by students in a graduate class, in order to verify its effectiveness. Bloom’s Taxonomy was used to determine educational goals for design thinking in this class. First design thinking was instigated based on students’ prior knowledge of life quality and sustainability indicators for housing design. Comprehension of proposed design guidelines was stimulated by the reading and discussion of related literature, paraphrasing or extension of proposed design guidelines and respective illustration with reference images. An existing low-income housing development, with award winning design, was selected and an evaluation of its conformance to proposed design guidelines was conducted comparing site or design images to reference images. This evaluation subsidized a design exercise for the selected housing development. The class was offered as a partially distance course with an agenda including: tutorials, theoretical classes, seminars and conceptual discussions. A new Brazilian open source e-learning environment was experimented and critiqued. Beyond traditional CAAD tools others such as wiki, blog, polls, chat, conferencing, web authoring and visit broadcasting supported collaborative learning and design. Results indicate the viability of design teaching in distance education courses for competent designers; however the experience shows the need for innovation in synchronous communication and visualization tools specific for architectural design users. Students evaluation of selected housing development and final projects indicate that the proposed guidelines for low-income public housing projects successfully supports the decision making process in order to incorporate quality of life and sustainability indicators in design. The experience presents a model of design education which incorporates technology integrated to human and environmental dimensions.

summary Previous research projects (Adel, Agustynowicz, and Wehrle 2021; Adel Ahmadian 2020; Craney and Adel 2020; Adel et al. 2018; Apolinarska et al. 2016; Helm et al. 2017; Willmann et al. 2015; Oesterle 2009) have explored the use of comprehensive digital design-to-fabrication workflows for the construction of nonstandard timber structures employing robotic assembly technologies. More recently, the Robotically Fabricated Structure (RFS), a bespoke outdoor timber pavilion, demonstrated the potential for highly articulated timber architecture using short timber elements and human-robot collaborative assembly (HRCA) (Adel 2022). In the developed HRCA process, a human operator and a human fabricator work alongside industrial robotic arms in a shared working environment, enabling collaborative fabrication approaches. Building upon this research, we present an exploration adapting HRCA to nail-laminated timber (NLT) fabrication, demonstrated through a case study exhibition (Figures 1 and 2).

title From texture to volume: an investigation in quasi-crystalline systems

summary The relation between texture, pattern and massing is a fundamental question in architecture. Classical architecture, as Leon Battista Alberti states in “De re aedificatoria” (Book VI, Chapter 2), is developed through massing and structure first; texture is added afterwards to give the bold massing and structure beauty. Only the ornamentation adds pulcritudo to the raw structure and massing. Rather than starting with a volume and applying texture afterwards, the Digital Girih project started with textural operations that informed the overall volume later. The stereometric, top-down methodology is questioned through the bottom-up methodology of the Girih project. Girih lines of traditional Islamic patterns were used as a starting point. The aspect of 3-dimensionality was developed analogue as well as digital, using the deformability of different materials at various scales and digital construction techniques as parameters. The flexibility within the Girih rules allowed the system to adapt to different tasks and situations and to react to different conditions between 2- and 3- dimensionality. The project in that way explored a bottom-up process of form generation. This paper will describe the process of the project and explain the necessity of digital tools, such as Grasshopper and Rhino, and fabrication tools, such as laser cutter and CNC fabrication technology, that were essential for this process.

summary We describe the exploration of the manifold novel shapes found in algebraic geometry and their application in architectural design. These surfaces represent the zero-sets of certain polynomials of varying degrees. They are therefore very structured, coherent and harmonious yet at the same time geometrically and topologically highly complex. Their application in design is mostly unprecedended as they have only recently begun to become accessible through novel software tools. We present and discuss experimental student design and research projects where shapes found in algebraic geometry were developed into pavilion designs. We describe historic precedents for the inspiration of art and architecture through mathematics and show how algebraic surfaces can be used to expand architects’ sculptural vocabulary, make the utmost of three-dimensional sculptural qualities, employ shapes that have a strong internal structure, transcend the imaginable and explore polynomials as a new kind of shape-making tool.

summary Popular discourses and representations of automation in design practice have often committed to an ontology of design and creativity where both materials, media and tools are rendered passive actors in design processes. The ways in which these narratives are articulated have consequences for how the materiality of media and of construction elements is construed in both design discourses and environments. Providing a brief critical history of the mutual construction of design technologies and notions of creativity and design is a concern of this paper, which concludes with a critical re-writing of disembodied conceptions of automation in design.

summary A system for using organic polymers as electrochromic components for a building’s facade is proposed, and early prototypes are presented. The potentialities of such system, Croma, are considered in two aspects: a) as interactive facades that change opacity in reaction to touch –hence “drawing with transparency”- and b) as elements to automate energy-smart behaviors of a building. Some implications are discussed.

summary The idea of spatiality is changing with the explosion of concrete boundaries in this age; this new idea is between the limited space and the continuum space. This paper shows a critical reading of three architectural drawings – ‘Micromegas’ (Daniel Libeskind), ‘The Block’ (Bernard Tschumi) and ‘The World’ (Zaha Hadid); the objective is discussing an idea of space impressed in these drawings, and the relationships with digital realm too. The base of this discussion is in Vidler´s Warped Space and Virilio´s Lost Dimension, searching to understand characteristics and influences that help the construction of this idea of space.

But the traditional linear approach in design has shown its limits, and it often leads to non optimal design solutions and buildings with inadequate performances. This paper aims to validate a computer supported collaborative workspace that facilitates the participation, in an integrated approach, of the various members of a construction project team. The goal of the research is to be part of the evolution of work practices in design.

title Outdoor mobile augmented reality for past and future on-site architectural visualizations

summary Mobile devices have become widely used in outdoors on-the-move applications. Our research aims at developing a system which allows users to visualize the virtual buildings, streets, historic sites, landscapes or cityscapes (in the past or future) which are rendered seamlessly with the current actual scene captured by the camera (called Augmented Reality), and interactively exploring the virtual scene in real-time while the user is moving. We use the camera PDA, the GPS receiver and the gyroscope to track the mobile device’s position and orientation for virtual scene rendering. This article documents the issues regarding accurate alignment, tracking, errors and limitations with mobile devices and presents our solutions generated so far for the research in progress.

summary Low productivity of the building sector today is attributed to the fragmentation of tasks, disciplines and responsibilities, as well as to the resistance to adopt integrative work processes and digital means. The increased complexity of architectural projects and the aroused social consciousness for sustainable environment calls for integrative design collaboration. Thus, there is need for a Conceptual Framework combining work processes, technological means and policy aspects. According to the literature, integrative multidisciplinary design is a strategy resulting in high performance buildings nurturing sustainable way of living (Reed et al. 2009, Krygiel & Nies 2008). Responding to the increased technological complexity of our built environment, as well as to the objective of meeting multiple criteria of quality, both necessitating multidisciplinary collaboration during design, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is seen as a powerful means for fostering quality, augmenting productivity and decreasing loss in construction. Based on recent research, we can propose that a sustainable building can be designed through an integrative design process (IDP) which is best supported by BIM. However, our ongoing research program and consultations with advanced practitioners underscore a number of limitations. For example, a large portion of the interviewed professionals and construction stakeholders do not necessarily see a link between sustainable building, integrative design process and BIM, while in our opinion, their joint use augments the power of each of these approaches taken separately. Thus, there is an urgent necessity for the definition of an IDP-BIM framework, which could guide the building industry to sustainable results and better productivity. This paper defines such a framework, whose theoretical background lays on studies in social learning (activity theory and situated action theories). These theories suggest that learning and knowledge generation occurs mainly within a social process defined as an activity. This corresponds to the context in which the IDP-BIM framework will be used, its final objective being the transformation of building design practices. The proposed IDP-BIM framework is based on previous research and developments. Thus, firstly, IDP process was well formalized in the Roadmap for the Integrated Design Process‚ (Reed et al.) which is widely used as a guideline for collaborative integrative design by innovating practices in USA and Canada. Secondly, the National Building Information Modeling Standard (NBIMS) of the USA is putting an enormous effort in creating a BIM standard, Succar (2008) recently proposed a conceptual framework for BIM, but BIM ontology is still under development (Gursel et al 2009). Thirdly, an iterative design process bound to gating reviews (inspired from software development processes) was found to be successful in the context of multidisciplinary design studios (reported in our previous papers). The feedback from this study allowed for modifications and adjustments included in the present proposal. The gating process assures the good quality of the project and its compliance to the client's requirements. The challenge of this research is to map the above mentioned approaches, processes and technologies into the design process, thus creating an integrated framework supporting and nurturing sustainable design. The IDP-BIM framework can be represented by a multidimensional matrix linked to a semantic network knowledge database: - the axes of the matrix being the project timeline, the design process actors and building stakeholders (architect, engineers, client, contractor, environmental biologist, etc.), or different aspects of building performance (environmental, functional, social, interior environment quality, cost, etc.); and - the knowledge database providing multiple layers of semantic support in terms of process, domain knowledge, technology and workflow at a given moment of the project and for a given actor or building aspect. The IDP-BIM framework is created as an evolutive digital environment for know-how and will have an established protocol for regular updates. The paper will firstly present the state of the art in IDP and BIM. Secondly, it will expose the methodology used for the definition of the Framework, followed by a description of its structure, contents and digital implementation. Then, some scenarios for the use of the Framework will be shown as validation.

title Musical Deconstruction / Reconstruction: Visualizing architectonic spaces through music

summary There is a common belief that music and architecture are connected through a hidden a dimension. Both arts, when abstracted intellectually (through mathematics) or emotionally (through phenomenological experience), share a number of ordering principles, having the same notion of crescendo in sequence and progression. Many have sought to unlock this hidden dimension to create artwork that lets our souls transcend up to the heavens. There are five different methods where architects have used music in their design approach: there are those who use harmonic proportions found in musical consonances as room dimensions to create harmonic spaces, flowing into each other like musical chords (Palladio, Steven Holl); those who believe that music is ‘design in time’ use rhythmic elements of music and apply it to their vertical surfaces and structural grids (Iannis Xenakis, Le Corbusier); those who use architecture as a musical instrument experiment with sound and acoustics to create a phenomenological environment (Bernhard Leitner, Peter Zumthor); those gifted with synethsesia (stimulating one sensory preceptor with another, e.g. seeing colors by listening to music, or vice versa) use certain musical pieces as an inspiration for form generation (Wassily Kandinsky, Steven Holl); and there are those who deconstruct an element in music and reconstruct it to architectural form, highlighting common themes between both arts (Iannis Xenakis, Daniel Libeskind). These five different methods have been the topic of research of many architectural scholars using western music as reference. The question becomes what if the musical reference is changed? Classical, rock, pop, country, jazz, and blues music are very different from one another, yet they share similar foundational musical structures. One may go further and experiment with various world music as reference, which is very different than western music in terms of musical structure. Linguists and musicologists have discussed the origins of music in relation to language. They hypothesize that cognitive elements found in language are somehow carried into the region's music. This paper documents the research of the author in this topic, discussing the digital modeling applications adopted that make such an investigation possible. The interest here is exploring how the visual space is altered when the musical reference is changed, and whether properties of the musical reference are evident in the architectural visualization. The musical references will be limited to Western Classical and Arabic music.

summary Most current approaches to unpredictability, within architectural discourse, lie either in the design of unbuildable emergent shapes or in performance simulations to test already designed outcomes. Even though some recent explorations have enabled the construction of emergent shapes, the unpredictability of real-world behaviors as the rules’ source for the unpredictability of shape generation remains unexplored. This paper proposes a novel model for the design of unpredictable buildable shapes, based on real-world behaviors. Initially, current methodologies are studied in order to find how they deal with the unpredictability of shape generation and real-world behaviors. Finally, a comprehensive novel model is proposed and tested through an empirical experiment, to show how it can be applied in architecture.

summary Most foldable structures have been designed to optimize collapsibility and structural performance. Likewise, they have been solely applied to a limited number of architectural shapes such as arches, domes or geodesics. While the constant folding process between retracted and deployed states, has been the main concern of designers, non-constant transformations and the in-between states remains unexplored. This research will study non-constant transformations in the in-between states, with the aim to find novel shapes and extend the repertoire of current applications. Initially, existing structures will be modified in order to find what type of shape transformations can be produced. Finally, a novel solution, through a digital model and a kinetic physical prototype, will be proposed.
