title HYBRIDS: Urban Systems and Information
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2009.843
source Computation: The New Realm of Architectural Design [27th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-8-9] Istanbul (Turkey) 16-19 September 2009, pp. 843-850
summary Digital tools are transforming design pedagogy by continuously redefining approaches to design processes and methodologies. A recurring theme in design education is the link between the analytical processes and the project development. While the investigations are formulated during the first phase, one typically moves back and forth between the two, allowing ideas created from the analysis to influence and modify the overall design directions. The data created through digital tools can be manipulated, altered, modified and, because of its inherent properties, carried throughout the overall design process. The focus of “Hybrids” seminar was to develop a strategy in which the analytical information and data created through digital tools, were able to inform a synergistic analog:digital design process. The seminar asked students to develop a temporary installation at the New Orleans Riverfront (Figure 1) focusing on the liminal condition that exists between the city and waters edge. The site is a nodal point between the French Quarter and the river that presents different levels of information and acts as a threshold between the city and the water edge.

title Computational Fluid Dynamics in Building Design Practice
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2020.1.574
source ACADIA 2020: Distributed Proximities / Volume I: Technical Papers [Proceedings of the 40th Annual Conference of the Association of Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 978-0-578-95213-0]. Online and Global. 24-30 October 2020. edited by B. Slocum, V. Ago, S. Doyle, A. Marcus, M. Yablonina, and M. del Campo. 574-583.
summary This paper provides a state-of-the-art of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the building industry. Two methods were used to find this new knowledge: a series of interviews with leading architecture, engineering, and software professionals; and a series of tests in which CFD software was evaluated using comparable criteria. The paper reports findings in technology, workflows, projects, current unmet needs, and future directions. In buildings, airflow is fundamental for heating and cooling, as well as occupant comfort and productivity. Despite its importance, the design of airflow systems is outside the realm of much of architectural design practice; but with advances in digital tools, it is now possible for architects to integrate air flow into their building design workflows (Peters and Peters 2018). As Chen (2009) states, “In order to regulate the indoor air parameters, it is essential to have suitable tools to predict ventilation performance in buildings.” By enabling scientific data to be conveyed in a visual process that provides useful analytical information to designers (Hartog and Koutamanis 2000), computer performance simulations have opened up new territories for design “by introducing environments in which we can manipulate and observe” (Kaijima et al. 2013). Beyond comfort and productivity, in recent months it has emerged that air flow may also be a matter of life and death. With the current global pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, it is indoor environments where infections most often happen (Qian et al. 2020). To design architecture in a post-COVID-19 environment will require an in-depth understanding of how air flows through space.

title Mitochondrial Matrix
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2021.444
source ACADIA 2021: Realignments: Toward Critical Computation [Proceedings of the 41st Annual Conference of the Association of Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 979-8-986-08056-7]. Online and Global. 3-6 November 2021. edited by B. Bogosian, K. Dörfler, B. Farahi, J. Garcia del Castillo y López, J. Grant, V. Noel, S. Parascho, and J. Scott. 444-453.
summary The following project was created as part of an art residency with the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research (WCMR) at Newcastle University. The WCMR specializes in leading-edge research into mitochondrial disease, investigating causes, treatments, and ways of avoiding hereditary transmission. Mitochondria is believed to have started off as a separate species that through symbiosis came to be the powerhouse of each cell in our bodies (Hird 2009). Mitochondrial disease is a genetic disorder that is caused by genetic mutations of the DNA of the mitochondria or the cell that in turn affects the mitochondria (Bolano 2018). Mitochondria is a hereditary condition and can affect people at different stages in their lives. It can affect various organs and has a link to various types of conditions. Therefore, the patient experience is unique to each individual and the elusive nature of the condition can make it particularly challenging due to the complexity of the disorder as well as the inaccessible scale on which these variations occur (Chinnery 2014)

title Enseñando diseño generativo: una experiencia didáctica [Teaching Generative Design: a Learning Experience]"
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009

title El Storyboard y el Animatic en la Enseñanza del Proyecto de Arquitectura [Storyboarding and Animatics in Architectural Education]
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary This paper discusses the issues involved with the introduction of the storyboard and the animatic in a design studio exercise. Storyboards - sketches used in film planning -, and the animatic - basically a moving storyboard - allow the student to understand space within in the context of a narrative. The purpose of the exercise was to enable the expression of subjectively experienced space in an early stage of urban context analysis. Differently than the traditional approach to animation which results a camera traveling through a path, the exercise approached animation from the perspective of the stories about the place.

title From Modeling to Collective Digital Fabrication: Experience of the "Banco Cabaça"
source García Amen, F, Goni Fitipaldo, A L and Armagno Gentile, Á (eds.), Accelerated Landscapes - Proceedings of the XXVII International Conference of the Ibero-American Society of Digital Graphics (SIGraDi 2023), Punta del Este, Maldonado, Uruguay, 29 November - 1 December 2023, pp. 543–554
summary This paper presents an experience of collective digital fabrication and parametric modeling of furniture made with recycled plastic waste, inspired by natural elements of the Brazilian northeast. In addition to conventional joinery techniques, we highlight the technologies of rapid prototyping (PR) and digital fabrication (FD) (Volpato, 2007, Pupo, 2008; Pupo, 2009); as tools that promote a paradigm shift, both in the design process and in production and materialization (Kolarevic, 2005), allowing recycled plastic to have new applications. We started with a brief review of digital fabrication processes in Brazil, emphasizing collaboration in design and execution. Then, we contain the recycling of plastic and the need for actions for its best destination. Finally, we present a sustainable and collaborative design experience: the modeling and digital fabrication of furniture, entirely produced from recycled plastic, called “Banco Cabaça”.

title Meta-Proceso de Diseño: Algunas claves en la dinámica interna del modelo [Meta process of Design - an insight in the dynamic model]
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary This paper proposes the study of 'phenomenon' described by the design actions in order to recognize the complex structure of decision-making processes to be faced by a designer. It is assumed that this process is composed of either the ‘designer act’ (or 'creative act'), and of the complex structure of information integration and the evaluation of decisions and alternatives. In this sense, design is not understood as a creative process that comes out of nowhere, but as 'the continuous process of evolutionary adaptation between the interpretative model of reality, and the intervention on that reality’.

source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary Innovation in digital manufacturing should not be impetuously assimilated, in particular in developing countries. They should not be rejected either, regarding them as unattainable. Industrial design knowledge establishes criteria to select and take advantage of the differential resources that these technologies provide to the project activity. Beyond the arguments that support and oppose digital manufacturing systems, the appropriation process progresses without definite information of the ways in which they are used by design studios and industries. Within the framework of a research project we developed a survey in order to obtain an outlook of the incorporation of these technologies in our country.
