title Digital as a Tool/Reference for Architectural Conception: Examples from Two Agencies: Ateliers Jean Nouvel and Jakob+MacFarlane
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2009.197
source Computation: The New Realm of Architectural Design [27th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-8-9] Istanbul (Turkey) 16-19 September 2009, pp. 197-204
summary This paper aims at specifying how ‘digital’ acts in contemporary architectural design. On that purpose, and in an a priori manner, we will formulate hypotheses of concepts able to translate the specificities of digital design. In this research paper, we beg the question that the ‘digital culture’ may influence the architects in two manners: in design operation and in references. The conceptual tools will be given by architecturology, and our hypotheses will be illustrated with examples of two French firms (Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Jakob+MacFarlane).

title Aided Architectural Sketching with Markov Models: Dromies and Recognition
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2009.745
source Computation: The New Realm of Architectural Design [27th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-8-9] Istanbul (Turkey) 16-19 September 2009, pp. 745-752
summary This article presents the current state of an ongoing research project developed at the ARIAM-LAREA laboratory of the school of Paris La Villette. The aim of this research is to offer architects digital tools that allow them to explore the project with freehand sketches as they do with pencil and paper. The role of these tools is to interpret the freehand sketches in order to work on them and transform them. They produce from these freehand sketches a digital model from which it will be possible to build a 3D representation, or to evaluate the project from any technical point of view. This paper only shows the part of the system that recognizes particular strokes in an architectural drawing.

title Conquering New Worlds
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2009.153
source Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Yunlin (Taiwan) 22-25 April 2009, pp. 153-164
summary Two Architecture Schools that are geographically separated provided students with a learning experience in Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs). Reported in this paper is the experience of the students as well as a commentary on the quality of the outcomes they achieved whilst confronting this new learning experience. A comprehensive questionnaire was developed and used in the end of the collaboration for students to reflect and evaluate their design and collaborative experiences. Based on the questionnaire results, this paper documents the issues that the students experienced in CVEs from the communication aspect, the design support aspect, and the collaboration and teamwork aspect. The paper concludes with insights on how this initiative can inform the way that we can better support design education in CVEs.

title Evaluating the use of 3D virtual worlds in collaborative design learning
source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages, Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009, PUM, 2009, pp. 51-64
summary 3D virtual worlds for collaborative design learning have been widely recognized and practised, nevertheless there is a general lack of formal evaluation with empirical evidence for the performance of virtual worlds, and their roles in developing students’ teamwork skills. In bridging these gaps, this paper provides a critical discussion of the effectiveness of virtual worlds for collaborative design learning, supported by a comprehensive analysis on the results of an inclusive questionnaire completed by architectural students. The paper provides insight into the application of virtual worlds in both technical and procedural experiences, and discusses the benefits and shortcomings of virtual worlds on design education.

title NU Genesis
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2009.257
source Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Yunlin (Taiwan) 22-25 April 2009, pp. 257-265
summary This paper presents a journal of unique design ideas emerged from a virtual collaborative design studio between Rangsit University, Thailand and University of Newcastle, Australia. “NU Genesis”, a virtual island in “Second Life” is used as an experimental platform, allowing the two universities to collaborate in design and learning across the continent. The presented designs are analyzed and evaluated to highlight the new design potentials in 3D virtual worlds, such as new design context and design support, and examples of the unique design usage of these potentials in future design practices. The design experiences and outcomes of the individual and collaborative projects are also discussed.
