title Testing the relevance of parameterization to architectural epistemology
source Architectural Science Review, Volume 52.2: 135-141
summary Advances in building information modeling (BIM) deeply impact the production of new architecture; its benefits are obvious and its acceptance widespread. But how does BIM impact the study of existing architecture? Can BIM be assumed to operate as a neutral framework, equally applicable to the study of architecture anywhere? Using as a point of departure a recent outline of the conceptual structure of parametric modeling prepared by Sacks, Eastman, and Lee (2004), this paper compares parametric models of two existing works of architecture: Mies van der Rohe’s Crown Hall and Peter Zumthor’s St. Benedict Chapel. The processes of parametrically modeling each building are specifically compared in two ways: first, parameters are established for each model; second, each model is "flexed" as a means of disclosing possible semantic relationships within each work of architecture. Because each building demands a different parameter-establishment strategy, and because the models permit different degrees of flexibility, the comparison illustrates the shortcomings of a "neutral framework" assumption to an architectural epistemology.

title Experiment Digital Space: Composition with Elements Designed by Mies van der Rohe and the Importance of their Web Presentation: Didactical Design Methods Applied in Design Studios for Architectural and Cultural Sciences in Brazil, University of São Paulo and in Germany, Leuphana University of Lüneburg

summary This empirical research project is a didactical teaching method intended to introduce students interested in space to theoretical architecture topics using specific computer capacities. In different variations, this teaching method was tested on students of Cultural Sciences and Architecture in Brazil and in Germany. With this method, even students without previous CAD or architecture experience can creatively design spaces. Visualization of the design process as Web design joins the individual aspects to a logical composite and applies the computer as “brain-craft” to complement handcraft. For the creative tasks, this means interaction in a complex information structure where the borders between the disciplines fade.

title Dynamic ornament: Climatically responsive surfaces in architectural design
source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages, Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009, PUM, 2009, pp. 353-366
summary In recent years, sensors and sensor networks have been broadly employed in buildings to monitor diverse aspects of the built environment. Sensors are commonly used to track indoor and outdoor climatic variables such as humidity, temperature, and solar radiation; and to recognize patterns in the activity of people. We propose that in addition to this common instrumental role, data gathered from sensors could also play an important aesthetic and cultural role in the design of engaging architectural spaces. We describe a design study that explores the use of sensor data as a means to qualitatively differen-tiate between spaces within the building, a role traditionally performed by architectural ornament.

title Thermochromic Information Surfaces: Interactive Visualization for Architectural Environments
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2009.491
source Computation: The New Realm of Architectural Design [27th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-8-9] Istanbul (Turkey) 16-19 September 2009, pp. 491-496
summary In this paper we describe a series of nine prototypes that were constructed to explore the benefits and limitations of thermochromic ink as a material for the design of architectural information surfaces. Among the goals of the project were the identification of inexpensive fabrication methods that could be used to build thermochromic surfaces at the scale of a room. Our primary design concerns were the ability to communicate information about indoor climate, and the integration of the information surfaces in an architectural environment. We propose a method for building thermochromic surfaces based on printed circuit boards (PCB) that is cost-effective, highly precise, and allows the fabrication of large surfaces through tiling.
