title Finding Your Way Around Heritage Sites: the Delivery of Digital Information to Mobile Devices

summary An information enriched 3D digital city model connected wirelessly with the real-time user interaction has the potential to deliver an effective piece in the pervasive computing jigsaw. Real-time location awareness can contribute to the effective delivery of 3D digital city models and associated information to small mobile devices. Location awareness is also one of the vital elements of ubiquitous computing systems; together the mobile hardware and its interactive contents can be thought of as 'everyware'. This paper describes the work - undertaken with different technological systems that have potential for pedestrian location sensing connecting the pedestrian user with real and virtual environments simultaneously. In particular we look at how users can be correctly located and efficiently informed about buildings and artefacts that are part of the spectrum of built forms that together are referred to as Architectural Heritage sites.

The integration of multiple disciplines is crucial for facing the next wave of global challenges. l Digital Design is intuitive. With advanced computational technology, how humans will cooperate with machines after the computing era will surely become the next challenge for all computational design-related researchers. Intuitive interaction or computing design is the second theme addressed in CAADRIA 2009. l Digital Design is Intelligent. summary Geosemiotics, defined as the study of meaning of placing signs in the material world, concerns the interaction of spatial, individual, social, and cultural contexts. Mobile technology, enabling spatial awareness successfully, has turned our living space into coordinates to broaden geosemiotics study. With interdisciplinary perspectives, there is an emerging potential to integrate the study of mobile spatial interaction and geosemiotics and we address several open issues of geospatial applications in this paper. Since indexicality is the focus of geosemiotics study, we focus on digital indexicalities referring to physical space. Physical indexical signs are usually set by government or organizations rather than individuals, and therefore we propose a new concept to place personal indexical signs in the physical space with mobile devices and augmented reality technology. Overlapped onto the physical world via visual, iconic, and metaphorical methods, what these unique personal semiotics bring is a living space with novel urban landscape and geosemiotics.

title The Design of a Mobile Navigation System Based on QR Codes for Historic Buildings

summary Due to the rapid development of mobile and compact electronic devices such as PDAs and smart phones, designers and developers now have to consider user mobility and the dynamic context of use in the design of interactive systems. In this study, literatures associated with mobile navigation systems in museums and historic buildings are first reviewed in order to understand the features, advantages, and drawbacks of current mobile navigation technology. The feasibility of applying QR codes in the navigation of historic buildings is then discussed, and the mobile navigation principles mentioned in previous literatures are applied in our proposed system. A number of common problems are encountered in the navigation of local historic buildings or museums. Visitors (1) cannot understand what makes an exhibited item a work of art; (2) do not know where to start or how to get started; (3) feel rushed by guides during the guided tour; and (4) find that the audio guide is not clear enough. Managers of historic buildings or museums are generally concerned about (1) the high cost of constructing a mobile navigation environment; (2) possible damage to devices; and (3) the cost of device maintenance. This study attempts to solve the above issues by constructing an affordable digital navigation environment that enables users to clearly understand each exhibited item and its location.

summary This paper describes the successful development of a design supporting method called ‘Ubicomp-Kaizen’ for the design of computerintegrated ‘smart’ buildings. The tool uses known methods of qualitymanagement of the car-manufacturing industry and integrates them into the architectural design process. By this, the CAAD-topics ‘design methodology’, ‘ubicomp/smart buildings’, ‘interactive architecture’ and ‘Building Information Model (BIM)’ are involved. In result it proves the successful integration and application of tools known from the product development industry such as ‘Quality-Function-Deployment (QFD)’ and ‘Failure Mode and Effects Analyze (FMEA)’ within the iterative building design. The outlook formulates a side-result which is the setup of a digital decision supporting tool and the extension of the IFC-definitions in order to integrate aspects of user-interaction and ubicomp."

summary This paper explores new methodology, tools, and techniques for ideation of interaction design. On one hand, our work takes a mixed approach to developing design methodology by integrating usability tests and ethnographic studies in the ideation process. On the other hand, parallel design with user participation is attempted to reduce interactive design life cycle. An interaction design example is drawn from i-Awn project, an activity-coordination and reminding system in smart homes. This example demonstrates our mixed approach and shows how a new methodology is developed for validating the quality of user experience in a critical process of designing. The objective is to get the right interaction and the interaction right, provoking new ways of thinking about usability evaluation in the ideation process. The social, cultural and emotional uses of interactive systems in smart homes are discussed.

summary This study has been started as a part of a research, related to exploring impact of novel interfaces during collaborative architectural design process on designers’ way of thinking. However, in this paper it is intended to focus on how the input devices reflect on designers’ modeling behavior in computer environment. Therefore it is intended to compare designer’s modeling approaches in computer environment via a case study. Four master students in architectural design computing graduate program have attended to the case study. The findings of the case study is presented and evaluated in the discussion section.

summary The study of value and its transfer during the multi-disciplinary process of design is stable fodder for research; an entire issue of Design Studies has been devoted to Values in the Design Process. By scrutinising design meetings Dantec (2009) and Ball (2009) separately examine the mechanisms of value transfer between the agents involved in design (clients, designers, engineers). Dantec suggests this is best understood in terms of requirement, values and narrative; Ball proposes it should be viewed as a combination of "analogical reasoning" and "environmental simulation". If we look at Vitruvius and his primary architectural manual (Pollio 1960) we find values‚Äîin the form of firmitas, utilitas and venustas‚Äîembedded in this early codification of architectural practice. However, as much current research is restricted to design practice what occurs when value frameworks move between domains of cultural activity (such as design to construction and vice-versa) is not privileged with a comparably sizable body of research. This paper is concerned with the ongoing usage of pervasive media and cellular phones within communications and value transfer across the disciplinary threshold of design and construction. Through participation in a building project we analyse the subtleties of interaction between analogue communication such as sketches and digitally sponsored communication such as e-mail and mobile phone usage. Analysing the communications between the designer and builder during construction suggests it is also a creative process and the distinctions between design and construction processes are complex and often blurred. This work provides an observational basis for understanding mobile computing as a dynamic ‚Äòtuning‚Äô device‚Äîas hypothesized by Richard Coyne (2010)‚Äîthat ameliorates the brittleness of communication between different disciplines. A follow up study deploys ‚Äòdigital fieldnotes‚Äô (dfn) a bespoke iPhone application designed to test further suppositions regarding the influence exerted upon group working by mobile computing. Within collaboration individual communiqu_©s have different levels of importance depending on the specific topic of discussion and the contributing participant. This project furthers the earlier study; expanding upon what mobile computing is and enabling us to infer how these emergent devices affect collaboration. Findings from these two investigations suggest that the synchronous and asynchronous clamour of analogue and digital tools that surround design and construction are not exclusively inefficiencies or disruptions to be expunged. Observational evidence suggests they may provide contingency and continue to have value attending to the relationship between static components‚Äîand the avoidance of failure‚Äîwithin a complex system such as design and construction.

title Interactive Hemostasis Modeling in Urban Network Design

summary This paper describes a type of project that images a city as it might exist given the integration of hemostatic procedures within pedestrian networks during emergencies requiring full-scale egress from an urban core. It articulates the steps taken to integrate a pre-existing C++ hemostasis model (C. Jacob, 2008) into Maya software in order to describe how the project operates on a computational level. By projecting these agent-based logics directly into/onto each pedestrian in the city (the smallest unit of the system), egress-oriented infrastructure can shift from being extensively predetermined in form (concrete barriers, metal railing, police barricades, etc.), to something more intensively defined, real-time, and locally on-demand. These procedures are situated within a larger schema based on the structural principles of Norbert Wiener's cybernetic feedback loops, that acknowledge and allow for hybrid (top-down + bottom-up) awareness and control within systems. The project attempts to ally itself with emerging forms of network design with similar structural typologies supported through the use of personal mobile devices (PMDs) in urban environments.

summary The emergence of parametric generative design tools and prototyping manufacturing technology led to radical changes in architectural morphologies. This change increased the opportunity to develop innovative smart geometries. Integrating these algorithms in the parametric softwares led to variations in building design concepts increasing alternatives and decreasing the repetitive work previously needed in conventional CAD software. The chosen software in this research is Generative Components (GC). It is a software design tool for an associative and parametric design platform. It is tested for using Global Variables with associative functions during the concept creation and form GC comprises features. The results presented in this research may be considered an introduction to the smart geometry revolution. It deals with the generative design which applied in the design process from conceptual design phase, defining the problem, exploring design solutions, then how to develop the design phases. Office building is a building type which encourages new forms that needs computational processes to deal with repetitive functions and modular spaces and enclosed in a flexible creative structural skin. Generative design helps the office buildings to be arranged, analysed, and optimized using parameters in early stages in design process. By the end of the research, the use of the smart geometry in a high rise office building is defined and explained. The research is divided into three parts, first a summary of the basic theories of office buildings design and the sustainable requirements that affect it, and should be integrated. Secondly, the previous experiences in generating office buildings by Norman foster and Sergio Araya. At last, a case study is proposed to test and evaluate the use of the parametric generative methodology in designing an office building with specific emphasis on the function, environmental aspects and form generation using Generative Components (GC) Software.

summary A system for using organic polymers as electrochromic components for a building’s facade is proposed, and early prototypes are presented. The potentialities of such system, Croma, are considered in two aspects: a) as interactive facades that change opacity in reaction to touch –hence “drawing with transparency”- and b) as elements to automate energy-smart behaviors of a building. Some implications are discussed.

summary The research effort presented here is based on the view of emergent behaviors. The aim is to develop smart building products each of which is independent, self-sufficient and with very limited intelligence. Using “Basic Building Block” as a platform, three building products, interactive louvers, see-through wall panel, and sensible floor tile are developed to illustrate the emergent smart behavior. These smart building products contain intelligent technologies that can be implemented into existing buildings incrementally without having to perform major renovations.

summary This paper describes how humans can communicate naturally with spaces in our daily lives by using instruments of daily life, such as whiskey glasses, cups, and MP3 players. We provided a smart space, which can not only adjust the environmental atmosphere by human activities, but also solidify connections between human feelings/memories, and record what happens inside it. The challenge of this work lies in how to create an alternative communication channel which can solidify family ties by using a natural and unobtrusive interface. The space is also able to automatically adapt to human feelings by changing the atmosphere, such as by changing the background lighting, music, and appropriate feedback.

summary It has been difficult to locate necessary information quickly in a complicated geo-spatial information network. Textual and numerical information is disadvantageous in that viewers may not have cognitive power and thus do not understand it properly. Besides, it is thought that a particular means is needed to obtain and to understand the information that we need in a given space. Therefore, this study posits that the geospatial information is complex in the construction of future oriented cities, and a new classification system is required for more effective information visualization. This paper also suggests a classification system of urban geo-spatial information and its possible applications as a way to reflect city dwellers’ opinion in city planning.

summary This paper describes a prototype of an intuitive tool named Smart Topology for the architectural space allocation in the early design phase. Smart Topology focuses on the manipulations of virtual spaces and can build and operate the topological relation among them by instantly modifying the geometric properties of spatial allocation so as to comply with the topological relation defined by the user. Based on a prototype of an interactive tool for the spatial allocation named Spatial Layout Game (SLG), Smart Topology adds more topological operations into SLG, such as the connective, combining, orientating, and opening. It also tracks the manipulating process and results by applying the database technology.
