summary This paper details a series of preliminary explorations into the concept of kinetic tensegrity grids that can respond to stimuli by changing their shape, porosity, and transparency. The research presented explores double-layer tensegrity grids that utilize 3D “compressed” components. A case study demonstrates their applicability to the formation of sophisticated building envelopes that can actively or passively respond to changes in the environment. A computational form-finding tool is introduced to study design variations in real time. This tool is shown to expand the design spectrum by supporting increased complexity and revealing unexpected design potential. This research is significant as it outlines a practical methodology for conceiving responsive building systems. summary The deconstruction (DeCon) and repurposing (ReCon) of existing structures and materials are worthwhile and relevant endeavors given the potential for such procedures to be more economically and environmentally sustainable than conventional construction methods. Conventional construction methods often utilize virgin materials for the production of architecture, requiring extensive energy to harvest, process, and manufacture the materials for use. Today, we must face the fact that we exist in a carbon-sensitive economy, and demand design approaches that reduce architecture’s impact on the environment. Our goal was to develop a CADCAM ReCon design methodology that would have the potential to mitigate carbon consumption. To explore this goal, students engaged a design research project that looked for novel and innovative approaches to the DeCon and ReCon of an existing barn. The student researchers created parametric models and surface designs derived from the existing materials. The digitally fabricated tectonic design constructions resulted in economical, novel, and material-efficient design methodologies for DeCon and ReCon.

summary This paper details a design process focused on explicit digital parametric modeling as an integral system-outcome design. This investigation isolates and alters a simple geometric form (cylinder) in a constructed architectural design method. Systems are defined as logical, sequential operations inherent to the resultant effects. These operations within each system are composed of various parameters, singular entities containing or referencing data. Given specific data, operations are preformed culminating with corresponding outcomes. The two main components of this research pertain to object extraction and transformation. A single grain silo (cylinder), as the architectural/geometric object under examination, is tested using a system of varied parameters inputted into the program Grasshopper, an “explicit history” graphic plug-in for Rhinoceros. This application is utilized to digitally manipulate parameters as objects in a nodal arrangement. Throughout the operations execution, this isolated silo will be transformed into a multitude of versions, then regrouped into the original cluster of silos to expose the implications from patterning, adjacency, and repetition given the proximity of the each silo and its new parametric characteristics. As the various parameters in specific operations affect the system as a whole, so is each adjacent silo in proximity given the same or similar operation? This then is translated and reflected in the outcome. This research seeks to explore design process by applying constant digital 3-D reductive geometric, modular forms inviting systems thinking in parametric environments that can lead to architectural design implications. By focusing on the technical aspect of the parameterization and valuing functionality rather then style, the process becomes focused on formal qualities as the system-outcome relationships. This research tests the “aesthetic implications” of a varied mode of digital design, namely the investigation of an architectural process utilizing parametric design.

summary Since mid 1990s internet has been developing rapidly to become the most booming and emerging media in late history and play an important role in living. Therefore, how to design an interface of easy to use has become an important issue pertaining to Human Computer Interaction. Norman (1986) proposed in the human computer interaction, there is a design model in the mind of designer. In turn, the designer will follow design model and to design a set of system image that is functional, learnable, and usable. Therefore, we want to understand the critical factor of influencing toward website construction, we should find out the mental model that web design team at first. In this paper, we using the Interactive Qualitative Analysis (IQA) approach. The data collection method of the participant of the focus group’s silent brainstorming is adopted. Further analyze web design team’s the conceptual model on website construction through inductive coding and axial coding. The result shows the affinities of 9 web design team is thus produced. And, Business Decision, Team Performance, Self-Fulfillment and Entrepreneur Communication are main influence factor. These factors can lead trend and goal of a website.

summary Recently, many cities in Japan and in other developed nations face problems such as decadence of downtown areas, aged society with a fewer number of children, dependence on automobile transport, etc. And redesign of public transportation services (e.g. tram) is thought to be one of the solutions for these problems. The introduction of LRT is investigated in various places, however, when a public traffic system like LRT is introduced, it is necessary to consider not only the transportation oriented aspects, but also landscapes and plans for a future sustainable city. Therefore, city planners are required to promote workshop-type in the design process to deal with citizens, companies, NPOs, etc. In this research, both components of the VR system for LRT projects and the system that enables the examination from various aspects of traffic, landscapes, city planning, etc., were studied.

summary This paper introduces the activities of World8, an international working group on virtual reality, and demonstrates the group’s developed VR applications in architecture. Group members come from eight universities around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Chile, Canada, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates. The main objective is to develop a research framework for collaboration between architectural schools and a software developing company. Specifically, the group is looking to create new applications for VR visualizations of urban settings with dynamic agents such as human and vehicular traffic. Models developed by these members are explained, and the project is reviewed based on survey results.

summary In this era, people are no longer satisfied with standardized products. Designers need to implement unique product semantics to attract customers to buy the products. According to this reason, designers are developing a new design approach that puts cultural elements into their products so that they can make people reappreciate their own culture and history. The Olympics is a global event which involves various sport competitions. Before the Beijing Olympic Games, many host nations used to promote their culture through selling a variety of merchandise. It is the first time for the Olympic Games to take place in China which means that it is obviously the right timing to see cultural symbols of China in the merchandises created by the Chinese design team. These designs had introduced Chinese imageries to the whole world. As generally known, traditional culture of Taiwan actually took root from China. Taiwan owns the same ancient history and materials like China. This study explores the cultural identity and analyses the cultural design elements of China. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is taken as case study in this research, because it helps people think how to create new value from their own culture. Furthermore, this paper proposes some suggestions on how to create design which represents the image of Taiwan.

summary Wood differs from most building materials in that it is a naturally grown biological tissue. Thus wood displays significant differentiation in its material makeup and structure as compared to most industrially produced, isotropic materials. Upon closer examination wood can be described as an anisotropic natural fiber system with different material characteristics and related behavior in different directions relative to the main grain orientation. Because of its differentiated internal capillary structure wood is also hygroscopic. It absorbs and releases moisture in exchange with the environment and these fluctuations cause differential dimensional changes. In architectural history the inherent heterogeneity of wood and the related more complex material characteristics have been mainly understood as a major deficiency by the related crafts, timber industry, engineers and architects alike. This paper will present an alternative design approach and associated computational design tools that aim at understanding wood’s differentiated material make up as its major capacity rather than a deficiency. Along two design experiments the related research on an integral computational design approach towards unfolding wood’s intrinsic material characteristics and performative capacity will be discussed. The first experiment explores the anisotropic characteristics of wood by exploiting the differential bending behavior in relation to the local induction of forces through which a specific overall morphology can be achieved. The second experiment focuses on the hygroscopic property of wood as the base for developing a surface structure that responds to changes in relative humidity with no need for any additional electronic or mechanical control.

summary This essay codifies and extends contemporary conceptions of systemic organization using architectural case studies within the context of 1950’s space-time. Given the dominance of certain concerns within the profession of architecture during that time—prefabrication and strict modularity—the selected case studies reveal unprecedented characteristics which anticipate current developments in algorithmic and parametric formation. The projects in question demonstrate sophisticated strategies for differentiated part-to-whole relationships which predate contemporary organizational systems, now derived with the aid of digital computation. Their importance to current architectural discourse lies in distinguishing the manner in which they manifest notions of space-time, including transformation, continuity and modulation, as architects increasingly operate within dexterous and interconnected environments.

summary In the course of a study into the origins of the Ionic order, a group of fragmentary early capitals of historic importance were measured by short-range laser-scanning, and then reconstructed in their original state by means of NURBS surface modelling. Drawings, renderings and scaled facsimiles were produced from both types of model, and proved invaluable in the formal analysis of the objects by architectural historians. It is suggested that these digital methods are more objective and accurate than traditional drawings and plaster reconstructions, and the resulting datasets more sustainable and of greater value to subsequent researchers.

summary Previous research projects (Adel, Agustynowicz, and Wehrle 2021; Adel Ahmadian 2020; Craney and Adel 2020; Adel et al. 2018; Apolinarska et al. 2016; Helm et al. 2017; Willmann et al. 2015; Oesterle 2009) have explored the use of comprehensive digital design-to-fabrication workflows for the construction of nonstandard timber structures employing robotic assembly technologies. More recently, the Robotically Fabricated Structure (RFS), a bespoke outdoor timber pavilion, demonstrated the potential for highly articulated timber architecture using short timber elements and human-robot collaborative assembly (HRCA) (Adel 2022). In the developed HRCA process, a human operator and a human fabricator work alongside industrial robotic arms in a shared working environment, enabling collaborative fabrication approaches. Building upon this research, we present an exploration adapting HRCA to nail-laminated timber (NLT) fabrication, demonstrated through a case study exhibition (Figures 1 and 2).

summary This article explores possibilities of using fuzzy models as a new research tool in the history of architecture. Namely, Adolf Loos’s villas are studied using these models. Fuzzy expert models will be used to analyze the principles of Adolf Loos’s work. Rules applied by A. Loos in villa design will be expressed in the form of fuzzy rule bases. The formulation of rules will result from the analysis of individual villa designs and will be based on theoretical concepts pertaining to Loos’s work -- in particular, on his designing process drawing on the concept of a Raumplan. Further, the concepts of the theory of architecture, related to a general procedure of construction design, will be utilized. The article also gives examples how to employ fuzzy sets in describing a building and its characteristics.

summary Both design researchers and cognitive scientists have developed various process models to study human creative behaviour in design. The models developed are often based on observations of design processes and analysis of design protocols. This research paper reports the-stateof- the-art in the area of cognition models that present design activities in conceptual designing. The research paper investigates the approaches of these cognition models. A new approach of a cognition activity model in conceptual designing is proposed. The new approach used in the introduced model takes into the account factors and activities that are related to the external environment of design (design medium). The external environment has an important role in the cognition activities and the evaluation process in a way that can hardly be ignored or neglected. The presented model of cognition activities in conceptual designing highlights two main factors employed in all the iteration loops of the model, namely: media use and representation. Case studies of architecture students’ designs have been analyzed. The analysis of these case studies helped in forming the proposed model. Various results have been concluded and reported.

title Reciprocal relationship of conceptualization and design problem definition: A proposed approach for an architectural design studio

summary This research paper proposes an approach to be applied in the design studio. The proposed approach highlights the reciprocal relationship between concept articulation and design problem definition in a design method that exposes different design activities related to this relationship. The design method was applied in a design studio of an intermediate level. The study reports the analysis of student designs in terms of the deign method employed. Moreover, a survey was carried out in order to measure the responses of students and instructors regarding the design method and its approach. The main structure of the design method proposed can be described as follows: although the relationship of concept articulation and design-problem definition are reciprocal, the influence of one direction can be distinguished more than of the other direction on different design activities. The research using qualitative and quantitative methodologies analyzes the results and outputs of the theoretical investigations, the practical application in the design studio, and the questionnaire responses through different methodological tools.
