summary This paper reports an investigation of the establishment and performance of a distributed computer rendering system for advanced computer graphics production within a centralized university information technology environment. It explores the proposal that the use of distributed computer rendering systems in industry and universities offers synergies for university-industry collaborative agreements. Claims that cluster computing and rendering systems are of benefit for computer graphics productions are to be tested within a standard higher education environment. A small scale distributed computer rendering system was set up to investigate the development of the optimum use of intranet and internet systems for computer generated feature film production and architectural visualisation. The work entailed using monitoring, comparative performance analysis and interviews with relevant stakeholders. The research provides important information for practitioners and the general public and heralds the initiation of a Centre for Visualization and Animation research within the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, University of Adelaide.

summary We introduce an evolutionary design approach for the automatic arrangement of a predefined space program on a given site. The design goal is to distribute floor spaces while ensuring the essential building performance and usage. The presented evolutionary strategy is applied to acquire optimal design solutions considering both environmental conditions and inner organization under diversified fitness functions. The evaluation process consists of the direct analysis of the spatial network and the physical factors in an adequate accuracy. The method provides a fast generation of qualified volumetric studies. The resulting buildings become a manifested compromise between qualities and cost.

summary This project is an exploration into the design & fabrication process of a canopy structure derived from the notion of pluripotency. The term is widely used in the context of stem cells in biological science where pluripotency is referred to the potential of a stem cell to develop into more than one type of mature cell, depending on environment. These can be re-interpreted architecturally as, the quality of design components or elements to be radically transformed into one or more different kinds of components, keeping the general structural integrity of the design unchanged (Kolatan, 2009). Consequently, the pluripotent canopy design is a 3 dimensional double curved surface , having smart pluripotent components populated over its domain, which parametrically has the potential to be transformed to more than one different kinds of elements, keeping the same parameters of construction for each component.

title To Colour the Virtual World - Difficulties in Visualizing Spatial Colour Appearance in Virtual Environments

summary This paper discusses the problems of visualizing colour appearance in an interactive virtual environment (VE) from the viewpoint of practice based architectural research. The discussion is based upon the research information project Virtual Colour Laboratory (VCL), the aim of which is to visually present and demonstrate existing research results on spatial colour phenomena for educational purposes, in the shape of a software application. During the work on this project, various problems connected to the visualization of colour appearance have emerged which are discussed in relation to current research on spatial experience and visual appearance in VEs. The aim of the paper is to focus on the importance of colour appearance in digital modelling as well as to highlight the problems of visualizing colour appearance interactively. The term colour appearance is used here as a general concept for the perceived colour of a surface or object.

title Algorithmic Form Generation of a Radiolarian Pavilion

summary This paper describes the design stage of an on-going research project for the construction of a pavilion that mimics the bone structures of Radiolarians. In the process, several constructive and generative algorithms are developed, together with geometric and trigonometric functions, all implemented in RhinoScript and a math plug-in for the NURBS modeler Rhinoceros. There has been considerable emphasis on the generation of the Radiolarian cell that is tessellated along a stereographic surface with a honeycomb-based algorithm. It combines design strategies from biomimetics, mathematical functions, generative scripting, process automation and versioning, all integrated into an algorithmic methodology for creating a non-standard structure, capable of being manufactured with CNC technology, and doing so, setting a precedent in the academic and professional environment in which it will be located.

summary This article seeks an adequate manner to stand for a generative process in architecture. The processes of typology development in a vernacular architecture is adopted. As a proper cultural object, a type is perceived as a general principle of creation, a supra-individual mechanism. In that context, there are some issues concerning the research problem: how to adequately represent a poiesis? The related theories to support this research development are distinct. However, the theoretical framework point out shape grammar as a base for generative process representation in architecture. A generative system that operates with the same generative logic is proposed.

summary Process/product complexity is at present an unavoidable component of present building design approach that affects building product’s quality. To overcome this problem, effective collaboration is required among all the actors involved in the design process. Data and information exchange is not sufficient to guarantee mutual understanding; to support effective collaboration among actors; it is required a proper knowledge formalization and management. This paper reports on an innovative structure for knowledge modeling in cross-disciplinary building design, that has been formalized in a general template. The proposed Knowledge Model has been, at present, implemented by means of available ontology editors and is going to be used into teaching courses to check its efficiency in collaborative building design classes.

summary Design is an iterative exploration process that will invoke many fragmented information with continuous iteration. While fragmented, implicit information lay among these fragmented pieces has shown more potential to achieve some goals that we might skip during the decisionmaking. These potential design goals named implicit intended solution are the problem spaces we want to explore in this research. Therefore, the continuous thinking/operation process cross these fragmented design decision might show some insights for discovering implicit intended solutions. This is a two-fold problem, without exploration and its continuous iteration characteristics, these solutions might not even be found or possible found. Therefore, in this paper we have conducted a research based on visualizing these implicit intended solutions as well the exploration process for finding them.

Hoberman Associates’ installation at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, Adaptive Fritting, is used as a case study for the more general thesis of mechanism design in architecture. Traditionally seen as expensive and impractical, ‘movement’ in buildings can be accessible if done with high economy and simple elegance. The goal of this example is to illustrate the design process, challenges, constraints and parameters required to realize an adaptable architectural system.

summary 3D virtual worlds for collaborative design learning have been widely recognized and practised, nevertheless there is a general lack of formal evaluation with empirical evidence for the performance of virtual worlds, and their roles in developing students’ teamwork skills. In bridging these gaps, this paper provides a critical discussion of the effectiveness of virtual worlds for collaborative design learning, supported by a comprehensive analysis on the results of an inclusive questionnaire completed by architectural students. The paper provides insight into the application of virtual worlds in both technical and procedural experiences, and discusses the benefits and shortcomings of virtual worlds on design education.

summary There is an increasing awareness of formal ontologies in knowledge-intense problem domains in the AEC industry. This paper analyzes the general use of ontologies, points to the importance of context-dependent ontology descriptions in AEC, and describes the use and management of multiple (external) ontologies as knowledge management tools within a complex information model of a building performance assessment tool CLIP (Computational support for Lifecycle Integral Performance assessment), previously developed by the authors. The paper provides a discussion of our approach, analysis of the benefits and limitations of external ontologies, suggestions for further development and research areas for the integration of multiple AEC knowledge representations.

summary Using several NBBJ civic projects as case studies, this paper provides an overview of how NBBJ’s Los Angeles design studio is leveraging parametric and generative processes for the design of projects such as stadiums and exposition halls. A combination of ambitious intent and fast project schedules necessitates the use of advanced parametric tools to quickly solve complex problems, generate unique features, and automate parts of the design process. Designers will utilize digital tools for a variety of purposes, which can be classified under two general categories. The first and most common application of the technology is within the category of rationalization and optimization. The tool, in this case, is limited to the role of a production device that aids the designer in efficiently solving complex design problems. In more unique projects, the advanced technology acts as a generative tool and is an integral part of a working design methodology. In this case, the design technology becomes more than just a tool at the designer’s disposal. Rather, it has the potential to act as a critical lens for identifying new possibilities in the architecture.

summary From natural objects to man-made artifacts, tiling is all around us: it is the act of rationalizing highly complex form by breaking it up into smaller, continuous components. If well pursued, tiled objects can be easily designed and assembled. However, a geometric-centric view of tiling, whereby a predefined form determines the shape, size, and organization of tiles, has victimized the field of digital design. This paper questions the role of tiling as rationalizing method and offers an alternative theoretical framework and technical grounding for tiling behavior: the act of generation-through-tessellation informed by material behavior. The tools developed are implemented in the design of a 3D-printed chaise lounge, using multiple materials. The technical objective is to introduce a quantitative characterization and analysis of property mapping, as it is applied to a tiling algorithm using Voronoi cell tessellation. The network of tessellated Voronoi cells is used as an element in the Voronoi Finite Element Method (V-FEM) that the author developed. Various characterization functions and geometric parameters are generated, and V-FEM is executed for plane-strain analysis of doubly curved surfaces, from which global and local responses are evaluated.

The comparison between modern and traditional methods, to determine the positives and negatives of both sides on the economic (economy, effort, money and time) and technical, which includes (graphic representation: painting, measure, Quality, precision, colours, details and other ....). The answer to whether computer and digital development has invented, added, or nothing of substance to content of architecture and urban planning designs, or has enabled us to solve the urban and architectural problems related to social and cultural aspects. We have in this study, the city of _Boussa_da_ in the south of Algeria as an example, through which presentation and analysis of two types of field projects carried in our architectural office using; media techniques and various programs: (Architectural3.3/Accurender/Art-lantis...) mentioning That, the two projects have been completed and approved, and are now in the process of realisation. The first project represents a residential neighbourhood area of (82.65 ha), through the action plan and land uses called _Plan d_occupation des sols_ in Algeria, No.09, in order to create and prepare the new town for extension, establish administrative and commercial centre, and determine the nature of land use; (equipment, facilities and housing),for a population number estimated (12,264)inhabitants, and projected number of housing estimated at 2409 houses, with a density of 150 inhabitants / ha. The second project is to study the architecture of the 50 houses earmarked for social Tzhmia working group, formed 25 three-room apartment type with(67.00 m 2) and 25 four-room apartment type with(77.00m2). However, The study aims to identify the impact of automated information applications and information technology used at different stages of urban planning and architectural design of these projects under consideration by the comparison between the traditional design table, and electronic design table to determine the pros and cons of each one of these means on the one hand, and stages of concepts and design, On the other, before concluding to how to use the media automation and digital technology, trying to find a point of hugs between the means and tools of Planning and design, through the analysis of the historical path of each of these elements.

summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. summary The working team is comprised of professionals and students from Engineering and Architecture degree courses. This group, participating at a certified research by Secretaría de Ciencia y Técnica de la Nación, have agreed to carry out a joint designing experience about a micro-architecture prototype to be domotized by the Chair of Automation of Mechanical Engineering.We have designed a display equipment for local bookstores. The equipment in itself is ductile and useful to build a stand. It can be easily coupled and divided into modules for shop windows and different spaces within stores. It is changeable, flexible, and its arrangement is dynamic. The design contemplates general sample functions according to the various sizes of the product, which range from small to large-scale objects.The equipment offers its own domotic features.

summary The emergence of parametric generative design tools and prototyping manufacturing technology led to radical changes in architectural morphologies. This change increased the opportunity to develop innovative smart geometries. Integrating these algorithms in the parametric softwares led to variations in building design concepts increasing alternatives and decreasing the repetitive work previously needed in conventional CAD software. The chosen software in this research is Generative Components (GC). It is a software design tool for an associative and parametric design platform. It is tested for using Global Variables with associative functions during the concept creation and form GC comprises features. The results presented in this research may be considered an introduction to the smart geometry revolution. It deals with the generative design which applied in the design process from conceptual design phase, defining the problem, exploring design solutions, then how to develop the design phases. Office building is a building type which encourages new forms that needs computational processes to deal with repetitive functions and modular spaces and enclosed in a flexible creative structural skin. Generative design helps the office buildings to be arranged, analysed, and optimized using parameters in early stages in design process. By the end of the research, the use of the smart geometry in a high rise office building is defined and explained. The research is divided into three parts, first a summary of the basic theories of office buildings design and the sustainable requirements that affect it, and should be integrated. Secondly, the previous experiences in generating office buildings by Norman foster and Sergio Araya. At last, a case study is proposed to test and evaluate the use of the parametric generative methodology in designing an office building with specific emphasis on the function, environmental aspects and form generation using Generative Components (GC) Software.

In this paper, we aim to give an overview of the background, applications, and technologies involved. A limited simple metric is introduced for assessing the degree of innovation. Future developments are outlined.
