summary Today, 98% of megaprojects face cost overruns or delays. The average cost increase is 80% and the average slippage is 20 months behind schedule (McKinsey 2015). It is becoming increasingly challenging to efficiently support the scale, complexity and ambition of these projects. Simultaneously, project data is being captured at growing rates. We continue to capture more data on a project than ever before. Total data captured back in 2009 in the construction industry reached over 51 petabytes, or 51 million gigabytes (Mckinsey 2016). It is becoming increasingly necessary to develop new ways to leverage our project data to better manage the complexity on our projects and allow the many stakeholders to make better more informed decisions. This paper focuses on utilizing advances in data mining, data analytics and data visualization as means to extract project information from massive datasets in a timely fashion to assist in making key informed decisions for project delivery. As part of this paper, we present an innovative new use of these technologies as applied to a large-scale infrastructural megaproject, to deliver a set of over 4,000 construction documents in a six-month period that has the potential to dramatically transform our industry and the way we deliver projects in the future. This paper describes a framework used to measure production performance as part of any project’s set of project controls for accelerated project delivery.

summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. summary Our research revolves around developing applications of augmented reality technologies to support changing temporal contexts in architectural design. In order to ground this research in contemporary professional culture, we first undertook a structured data gathering exercise, analysis of which will inform development of new AR technologies and tools to support temporal visualisation of architectural designs. This paper reports on the first phase of this project in which we undertook extended conversations and documentation of 22 design offices that represent practices of varying sizes and competencies. The intention of this data collection exercise was to map out spectrum of design issues and representations that specifically revolve around changing temporal or spatial contexts in design. This paper reports collection and preliminary analysis of data intended for developing specifications of future AR applications.

summary Low productivity of the building sector today is attributed to the fragmentation of tasks, disciplines and responsibilities, as well as to the resistance to adopt integrative work processes and digital means. The increased complexity of architectural projects and the aroused social consciousness for sustainable environment calls for integrative design collaboration. Thus, there is need for a Conceptual Framework combining work processes, technological means and policy aspects. According to the literature, integrative multidisciplinary design is a strategy resulting in high performance buildings nurturing sustainable way of living (Reed et al. 2009, Krygiel & Nies 2008). Responding to the increased technological complexity of our built environment, as well as to the objective of meeting multiple criteria of quality, both necessitating multidisciplinary collaboration during design, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is seen as a powerful means for fostering quality, augmenting productivity and decreasing loss in construction. Based on recent research, we can propose that a sustainable building can be designed through an integrative design process (IDP) which is best supported by BIM. However, our ongoing research program and consultations with advanced practitioners underscore a number of limitations. For example, a large portion of the interviewed professionals and construction stakeholders do not necessarily see a link between sustainable building, integrative design process and BIM, while in our opinion, their joint use augments the power of each of these approaches taken separately. Thus, there is an urgent necessity for the definition of an IDP-BIM framework, which could guide the building industry to sustainable results and better productivity. This paper defines such a framework, whose theoretical background lays on studies in social learning (activity theory and situated action theories). These theories suggest that learning and knowledge generation occurs mainly within a social process defined as an activity. This corresponds to the context in which the IDP-BIM framework will be used, its final objective being the transformation of building design practices. The proposed IDP-BIM framework is based on previous research and developments. Thus, firstly, IDP process was well formalized in the Roadmap for the Integrated Design Process‚ (Reed et al.) which is widely used as a guideline for collaborative integrative design by innovating practices in USA and Canada. Secondly, the National Building Information Modeling Standard (NBIMS) of the USA is putting an enormous effort in creating a BIM standard, Succar (2008) recently proposed a conceptual framework for BIM, but BIM ontology is still under development (Gursel et al 2009). Thirdly, an iterative design process bound to gating reviews (inspired from software development processes) was found to be successful in the context of multidisciplinary design studios (reported in our previous papers). The feedback from this study allowed for modifications and adjustments included in the present proposal. The gating process assures the good quality of the project and its compliance to the client's requirements. The challenge of this research is to map the above mentioned approaches, processes and technologies into the design process, thus creating an integrated framework supporting and nurturing sustainable design. The IDP-BIM framework can be represented by a multidimensional matrix linked to a semantic network knowledge database: - the axes of the matrix being the project timeline, the design process actors and building stakeholders (architect, engineers, client, contractor, environmental biologist, etc.), or different aspects of building performance (environmental, functional, social, interior environment quality, cost, etc.); and - the knowledge database providing multiple layers of semantic support in terms of process, domain knowledge, technology and workflow at a given moment of the project and for a given actor or building aspect. The IDP-BIM framework is created as an evolutive digital environment for know-how and will have an established protocol for regular updates. The paper will firstly present the state of the art in IDP and BIM. Secondly, it will expose the methodology used for the definition of the Framework, followed by a description of its structure, contents and digital implementation. Then, some scenarios for the use of the Framework will be shown as validation.

summary Mobile devices like cell phones, handhelds, and other gadgets are useful tools in organizing and communicating. This is going to change. Recent developments in hardware have proven that such small devices are much more capable and have reached the levels of common laptops as of five years ago. With more computational power, more memory, and new methods of interaction such as touch screens, or accelerometers, mobile devices can be used in the design process.However, the assumption that they can, or will, substitute desktop computers might be misleading. By no means will mobile devices substitute them directly. Instead, thinking of them as innovative tools that provide new approaches in the design process can establish new methods and, consequently, might circumvent the overall need of desktop computers at all.

summary This study aims to present a classification of methodological procedures for using computer programmes to simulate architectural historical heritage. Produced for a Master’s Degree dissertation in Architecture, the methodology was developed based on several analyses of applications, possibilities and restrictions, with the assistance of photogrammetric reconstruction and several computer-graphics programmes. The files generated enable production of animations recording the changes experienced by buildings at various historical periods. These procedures were applied to the simulation of several buildings around the Praça Dante Alighieri in the centre of Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, demonstrating their appropriateness and effectiveness and also showing the potential of computer-simulation resources for the historical environment, both educationally and in appreciation of architectural heritage.

summary This paper discusses the issues involved with the introduction of the storyboard and the animatic in a design studio exercise. Storyboards - sketches used in film planning -, and the animatic - basically a moving storyboard - allow the student to understand space within in the context of a narrative. The purpose of the exercise was to enable the expression of subjectively experienced space in an early stage of urban context analysis. Differently than the traditional approach to animation which results a camera traveling through a path, the exercise approached animation from the perspective of the stories about the place.

summary The research presented in this paper investigates ways of providing better design applications for technologies in the field of Urban Digital Media (UDM). The work takes an emergent approach, evolving a design strategy through the early engagement of stakeholders. The paper discusses research in a design-led creative intersection between media technology, culture and the arts in the built environment. The case study discusses opportunities for the enhancement of a university campus experience, learning culture and community, through the provision of an integrated digital presence within campus architecture and urban spaces. It considers types of information architecture (Manovich, 2001) and designs for use in urban settings to create communication-rich, advanced and interactive designed spaces (Haeusler, 2009). The presented research investigates how to create a strategy for display technologies and networked communications to transform and augment the constructed reality of the built environment, allowing new formats of media activity.

summary Analytical work has demonstrated the potential of shape grammars for capturing rules embedded in existing design styles, and generating designs within such styles that match given design contexts. However, the creation of grammars for new design styles, from exploratory rules to design synthesis, remains elusive. The combined use of patterns and discursive grammars is here proposed as a way of encoding the semantics behind recurrent urban design operations and enable the development of a tool to support the creation of new grammars. The idea is that by exploring the combination of generative patterns designers may arrive at new grammars.

summary Computer-Aided Design (CAD) has become more and more part of the common architectural practice. Some designers have explored (in the past) different aspects, especially formal ones, allowed by these new information technologies. This paper’s goal is to explore the invention that would be specific to this new architectural practice. The hypothesis is to go back to the specificity of the image and to examine its evolution. This analysis will be done with reference to the « cycle of images » of the French philosopher Gilbert Simondon, described by means of stages and levels. This particular way of thinking will allow us, besides an overview of all those images in a genetic diagram, to reveal what can enable the passage from one level to another. We call this : “invention”.

summary This paper examines the objectives and describes the methodology of an ongoing research project concerned with the built heritage of Montreal, Canada; more precisely, with the openings (doors, windows, bow-windows, dormers, etc.) in residential buildings. Within the framework of this project, we aim to implement digital environments to document and enhance the architectural vocabulary of openings. We adopt 3D programming to describe the way in which the artefacts are assembled from different components. The aim of this process is to enable the introduction of variations into the principles governing the composition of the artefacts, so as to generate new configurations.

summary This article presents the current state of an ongoing research project developed at the ARIAM-LAREA laboratory of the school of Paris La Villette. The aim of this research is to offer architects digital tools that allow them to explore the project with freehand sketches as they do with pencil and paper. The role of these tools is to interpret the freehand sketches in order to work on them and transform them. They produce from these freehand sketches a digital model from which it will be possible to build a 3D representation, or to evaluate the project from any technical point of view. This paper only shows the part of the system that recognizes particular strokes in an architectural drawing.

title Crafting New Artefacts

summary The craft of complex artefacts, questioning technological changes and reflecting social and cultural transformation used to be a common attitude in traditional artisans of the pre industrialized society. Traditional craftsman developed special knowledge and skills, implementing their own tools and techniques. After the industrial revolution, the main focus shifted to mass production, and the personalization of artefacts became labour intensive and more expensive. Simultaneously, with technical specialization and the fragmentation of knowledge, the designer’s, builder’s and manufacturer’s approach became more segregated. Currently, information technologies offer new opportunities to the craft of complex objects. The integration of digital process from conception to fabrication, can transform this situation, and as a result personalization is more affordable. Nevertheless, the introduction of these new techniques or tools is lacking a poetic synthesis for the use of technology, and the social and cultural implications that may result of this use. A competition for a public installation was an opportunity to use digital tools to conceive, manufacture and construct a complex structure with a small budget that would be impossible to attain using only traditional tools. At the same time, this project - genetic landscape- could be seen as a metaphor, alluding to the technological interference on the process of creating a new life, or a second nature.

summary This paper presents an image-driven method to rapidly generate 3D digital urban models for presentation in a real-time Virtual Reality (VR) environment. Several computational tools and methods are developed in order to give the end user the ability to transform a single 2D image into a realistically textured and rendered a 3D urban model. Using this method, city models based on SmartCode, a template for planning and urban design, are generated and presented in a VR visualization tool. The methods to generate VR city models including inputs, process, output, and pipeline are explained. One generated 3D city model is demonstrated in the results section.

summary In this paper, we introduce an agent-based simulation of passengers in airport terminal buildings. A case study is described during which a prototype simulation tool is used to test the impact of a conceptual design change in an existing airport terminal building. We illustrate how this real-time, geometry-aware simulation can be generalized and integrated into the design process to support designers in configuring the spatial layout of public and functional buildings.
