The tool, enabling designer to play with forms, patterns, models is neither granting him the knowledge nor teaching him the appropriate technique. Are we really able to digest and master all the information we’re subject to, to be used in our designs? Or do we have much to learn about the investigations of the renaissance men to reach to a level of proficiency?

In this paper it is aimed to initiate a platform in architecture which will serve for discussions to explore the potentials of these interactions under the impact of computational and information technologies, not only in terms of formal/visual way, but also extending to learn more about the formation process in nature.

summary This paper presents a shape grammar for planned urban spaces intending an implementation for generative urban design. This implementation will form part of an urban design support tool defined to formulate, generate and evaluate urban designs. The goal is to formulate urban program descriptions according to context conditions using a description grammar and generate alternative design solutions using a shape grammar. The generation is guided by several evaluation processes performed by an evaluation module. In this paper we are focusing on the definition of the generic shape grammar using an existent urban plan as a case study. The aim is to encode the design moves of the urban designer into generic grammar rules amenable for specific instantiations through the customization of rule parameters.

summary This research intends to provide a comprehensive understanding and tectonic patterns of responsive architecture. By qualitatively analyzing a series of critical responsive buildings from Ito’s early Wind Tower through Diller and Scofidio’s Blur Building to Cloud 9’s recent Habitat Hotel, tectonic themes of “lightness”, “morphing”, ”improvisation”, and “networking” are set to the elucidate methodological relationships between their tectonic expressions and design concepts. Based on these designated themes, manipulation of materiality, techniques of construction, and mechanism of responsiveness in the studied cases are comparatively discussed and demonstrated with visualization of their tectonic design patterns. The objective of this research is to stress on the importance of tectonic consistency and offer evidences in combining physical components with digital configurations in order to achieve poetic expressions of structure, function, as well as aesthetics so that genuine spatial quality for digital era can be truly revealed.

summary In this paper, we suggest a generic city description model suited for purposes like semi-automatic city modeling and urban layout evaluation. The generic city model refers to basic vital functions of a (computable) city. Feature patterns are used to extend the generic city model with global and local characteristics. The Hellenistic cities serve as a platform for a first implementation to test a semi-automatic city model generation. As a result four cities are reconstructed as a first example of our ongoing work, Miletus, Knidos, Priene and Olynthus. Future work will deal with the application of the generic city model to the performance simulation of contemporary urban layouts.

summary Relationships are amplified and collapsed together as animate surfaces in the formal and spatial manifestation of design parameters. Animation is demonstrated as a medium to express topologies, as each frame is the resultant of a programmed serious of computations, the result of which varies with a parameter: effectively, time. Related conditions are parameterized through the design of algorithms as a means of direct translation into animation. Interrelated forces and limits can conversely congeal into statics with animate qualities. Process and product merge to create a language of phenomenological effects and patterns. While animation is exploited to represent parametric relationships there is a maintained awareness of time and space. The systemization and codification of design “problems” simultaneously facilitates functional, solution-driven architecture. The output is characterized by complex, performative, and specific solutions uniquely relevant to emerging models for fabrication and construction. Usage requirements and site conditions carry the weight of information-based contexts and experience-based symbols as fuel for the inherently cyclical process.

summary In recent years, sensors and sensor networks have been broadly employed in buildings to monitor diverse aspects of the built environment. Sensors are commonly used to track indoor and outdoor climatic variables such as humidity, temperature, and solar radiation; and to recognize patterns in the activity of people. We propose that in addition to this common instrumental role, data gathered from sensors could also play an important aesthetic and cultural role in the design of engaging architectural spaces. We describe a design study that explores the use of sensor data as a means to qualitatively differen-tiate between spaces within the building, a role traditionally performed by architectural ornament.

summary Relatively few quantifiable and objective methods exist for the analysis of architectural elevations. Only one of these methods has been repeated by multiple researchers and used for the analysis of a wide range of historic and modern buildings and architectural types. In the present paper, the computational variation of this method–the fractal approach to determining characteristic visual complexity–is applied to the early house designs of Peter Eisenman. The results of this analysis are then subjected, for the first time, to cluster analysis in an attempt to uncover patterns in the way in which Eisenman’s houses are shaped by orientation, address and permeability. Such an analysis is of interest because Eisenman argues that he set out to design these early houses without regard for such factors. The paper concludes that the mathematical data generally supports Eisenman’s contentions regarding his Houses I, II, III, IV and VI.

summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. title From texture to volume: an investigation in quasi-crystalline systems

summary The relation between texture, pattern and massing is a fundamental question in architecture. Classical architecture, as Leon Battista Alberti states in “De re aedificatoria” (Book VI, Chapter 2), is developed through massing and structure first; texture is added afterwards to give the bold massing and structure beauty. Only the ornamentation adds pulcritudo to the raw structure and massing. Rather than starting with a volume and applying texture afterwards, the Digital Girih project started with textural operations that informed the overall volume later. The stereometric, top-down methodology is questioned through the bottom-up methodology of the Girih project. Girih lines of traditional Islamic patterns were used as a starting point. The aspect of 3-dimensionality was developed analogue as well as digital, using the deformability of different materials at various scales and digital construction techniques as parameters. The flexibility within the Girih rules allowed the system to adapt to different tasks and situations and to react to different conditions between 2- and 3- dimensionality. The project in that way explored a bottom-up process of form generation. This paper will describe the process of the project and explain the necessity of digital tools, such as Grasshopper and Rhino, and fabrication tools, such as laser cutter and CNC fabrication technology, that were essential for this process.

summary Analytical work has demonstrated the potential of shape grammars for capturing rules embedded in existing design styles, and generating designs within such styles that match given design contexts. However, the creation of grammars for new design styles, from exploratory rules to design synthesis, remains elusive. The combined use of patterns and discursive grammars is here proposed as a way of encoding the semantics behind recurrent urban design operations and enable the development of a tool to support the creation of new grammars. The idea is that by exploring the combination of generative patterns designers may arrive at new grammars.

summary This work proposes the use of partial order lattices along with represent-ational schemes to account for patterns of ambiguity and emergence in the description of designs. The complexity of such designs is viewed as an aggregation of spatial layers that can all be decomposed by the subgroup relations of the symmetry of the configuration. At the end, this methodology points to a combinatorial approach that generates visual prototypes for future use in design synthesis. Here, Meier’s work is just a case study that validates the group theoretical approach.

summary The definition of an underlying shape grammar behind Inca architecture can assist in the virtual archaeological reconstruction of destroyed sites; that is, allowing us to step from the ancient to the digital realm. The Inca architectural style tends to be consistent throughout the Andes and was in effect, a statement of power. Geometricity, interlocking patterns, orthogonal layouts, colour and texture reversal, modular compression, derivations, rotation, mirroring, repetition, symmetry, proportion, ratios, recombination and Andean “entasis” are qualities frequently encountered in Andean art and architecture. They are “CAD-friendly” and can be integrated into predictive digital virtual reconstruction techniques representing partially damaged and substantially destroyed ancient Andean monuments (and fine arts).

summary Spacer fabrics are three dimensionally warp-knitted textiles that can be draped over complex double curved surfaces with no need for cut patterns or additional seams. This paper explains the development of an integral computational approach to the design and fabrication of sandwich composite structures with a spacer fabric core. Contrary to the common hierarchy of architectural design processes that prioritizes the definition of form over the inherent characteristics of materialization, this approach aims at an integral computational design process capable of unfolding a design from the constraints of making. The way the material capacity of spacer fabrics combined with the constraints of sandwich composite manufacturing directly informs the computational design process will be explained along the development of two prototype structures.

summary Kinetic facades offer new compositional opportunities based on the design of patterns of movement. There is the capacity for novel form, but minimal knowledge in the design of kinetics. As a way forward, this research addresses two questions—what is the range of kinetic patterns, and what nomenclature may robustly describe pattern range? Results from a series of scripted animations utilizing a range of techniques are analyzed, and from this a set of terms for describing the morphology of kinetic pattern is developed. Kinetics is conceived as state change: the terms used to describe states are wave, fold, and field; a full range of patterns can be described as variants of these three simple states; or as intermediate or compound state transitions.

summary Aperiodic tiling patterns result in endlessly varied local configurations of a limited set of basic polygons, and as such may be used to economically produce non-repeating, complex forms from a minimal set of modular elements. Several well-known tilings, such as by Penrose (2D) and Danzer (3D), have been used in architecture, but these are only two examples of an infinite set of possible tilings that can be generated by the projection in two or three dimensions of high-dimensional grids subject to rotations. This paper proposes an interface that enables the user to parametrically search for such tilings. Assembly rules are explained by which arbitrary geometry as specified by NURBS surfaces may be based on the pattern to form a non-repeating complex surface. As an example, the fabrication in concrete of a cylindrical tiling is used to demonstrate the mass production of a continuous, free-flowing structure with the aid of a minimum amount of formwork.

summary Fire agencies on all levels try hard to save lives, properties, and natural resources. Accurate access to critical information is essential in this regard, many agencies around the world have embraced GIS as a tool that helps them balance needs, uses, and hazards to promote sustainability of the environment while identifying and limiting vulnerability. At Kingdom of Bahrain, Ministry of interior established the Geographic Security System (GSS) to enhance the emergency response. The 3D of the GSS Consisted of 3 main parts: (1) 3D for terrain model, (2) 3D model for entire targeted zones, and (3) 3D models for individual buildings. In this paper, the integration between GSS system and 3D model will be illustrated, and how this kind of integration could enhance decision support system (DSS) for fire safety at kingdom of Bahrain. On other hand, we will highlight the technical and legislation difficulties faced in this project. Also, the future steps to enhance DSS will be discussed.

summary Both design researchers and cognitive scientists have developed various process models to study human creative behaviour in design. The models developed are often based on observations of design processes and analysis of design protocols. This research paper reports the-stateof- the-art in the area of cognition models that present design activities in conceptual designing. The research paper investigates the approaches of these cognition models. A new approach of a cognition activity model in conceptual designing is proposed. The new approach used in the introduced model takes into the account factors and activities that are related to the external environment of design (design medium). The external environment has an important role in the cognition activities and the evaluation process in a way that can hardly be ignored or neglected. The presented model of cognition activities in conceptual designing highlights two main factors employed in all the iteration loops of the model, namely: media use and representation. Case studies of architecture students’ designs have been analyzed. The analysis of these case studies helped in forming the proposed model. Various results have been concluded and reported.
