summary This empirical research project is a didactical teaching method intended to introduce students interested in space to theoretical architecture topics using specific computer capacities. In different variations, this teaching method was tested on students of Cultural Sciences and Architecture in Brazil and in Germany. With this method, even students without previous CAD or architecture experience can creatively design spaces. Visualization of the design process as Web design joins the individual aspects to a logical composite and applies the computer as “brain-craft” to complement handcraft. For the creative tasks, this means interaction in a complex information structure where the borders between the disciplines fade.

summary An environmental crisis in Australia in early 2009 prompted the architectural design work considered in this paper. Bushfires ravaged the Victorian hinterland, destroying lives and families. The crises inspired me to explore the ACADIA 2009 conference theme, reForm(): how technologies transform the ways in which buildings and spaces perform, act and operate. This paper explores architectural design in distressed contexts and some design technologies used to formalize new housing development and respond to the environmental crisis.

title On Distributed Network Rendering Systems
source Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Yunlin (Taiwan) 22-25 April 2009, pp. 65-74
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2009.065
summary This paper reports an investigation of the establishment and performance of a distributed computer rendering system for advanced computer graphics production within a centralized university information technology environment. It explores the proposal that the use of distributed computer rendering systems in industry and universities offers synergies for university-industry collaborative agreements. Claims that cluster computing and rendering systems are of benefit for computer graphics productions are to be tested within a standard higher education environment. A small scale distributed computer rendering system was set up to investigate the development of the optimum use of intranet and internet systems for computer generated feature film production and architectural visualisation. The work entailed using monitoring, comparative performance analysis and interviews with relevant stakeholders. The research provides important information for practitioners and the general public and heralds the initiation of a Centre for Visualization and Animation research within the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, University of Adelaide.

title Immersive Virtual Reality in Landscape Planning
source Digitizing Architecture: Formalization and Content [4th International Conference Proceedings of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2009) / ISBN 978-99901-06-77-0], Manama (Kingdom of Bahrain), 11-12 May 2009, pp. 349-364
summary In Norway there has been an increased focus on participatory planning the latter years. The public is now supposed to be included in the planning process. The documents which the public have access to usually consists of the project`s technical drawings. In some cases, the documents include perspective drawing or computer rendering supplied by the stakeholder. Most affected parties are non professional in terms of planning, and have little or no experience dealing with the plans. Therefore, the information they rely on most cases is the perspective images, which easily can be manipulated. A system that enables all parties engaged in the planning process to visualize planning scenarios in a much realistic way is therefore needed. Virtual Reality is a tool that enables the viewer to move freely in a three dimensional digital environment. In this virtual world, different levels of interactivity can be added. The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) has recently installed a new immersive Virtual Reality system based on the idea of ConCave theatre. This research study is making use of the new ConCave theatre in order to test whether VR can be used as an enhancement of the communication process between professionals and amateurs and between professionals. By presenting digital models of different level of detail to two subject groups consisting of students with planning background and two groups without such experience we first investigated perception in an immersive VR-environment.

title Tools for conviviality : Transcribing design
source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages, Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009, PUM, 2009, pp. 740- 753
summary This paper presents the outcomes and findings of a semester long trans-disciplinary design studio recently taught at RMIT University, involving students from the disciplines of architecture, industrial design and landscape design. The focus of the studio was to investigate the creation and appropriation of tools for innovative design processes. Drawing on craft theory and theories of design and computation, this paper illustrates how tools can transgress disciplinary boundaries and investigates how an understanding of the intricate relationship between tools, techniques, the media they operate in and the design outcome is the premise of a more informed design approach.

source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary Innovation through digital design in contemporary practice has led to completely new ways of designing and making architecture. To prepare for these innovative opportunities, students are turning to alternative skill sets than those traditionally gained in an architectural curriculum. This paper argues that we must reconstruct our architectural curricula in order to better prepare students for a shifting professional landscape. While current material-based production realities of translating digital design into built form have much in common with modernist traditions, exercises, sequences, and collaborative opportunities in schools should pass through a relevant lens examining the true potential of working with the information age.

source Digitizing Architecture: Formalization and Content [4th International Conference Proceedings of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2009) / ISBN 978-99901-06-77-0], Manama (Kingdom of Bahrain), 11-12 May 2009, pp. 29-36
summary This paper discusses the visualization tools and methods used to examine human perception in Visual Impact Assessment (VIA). One of the key conservation areas in Kuala Lumpur was selected in the study to measure the impact of different types of visualization tools. This paper recommends that human perception contributes towards the improvements of the visualization tools for VIA. The study found out that the common visualization tools used were not the most preferable tools among respondents. On the contrary most respondent preferred interactive visualization that offered more visual possibilities leading to a better understanding of landscape design. Apart from this, the study identified that the visual perception between the respondents who have different formal education background have similar concerns on the visualization tools tested to them.

title An Interactive Decision Support System for Deriving Plot Ratios Based on the Similarity Relations Between Land Attributes
source ACADIA 09: reForm( ) - Building a Better Tomorrow [Proceedings of the 29th Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 978-0-9842705-0-7] Chicago (Illinois) 22-25 October, 2009), pp. 264-266
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2009.264
summary This paper presents a simple tool for deciding land attribute plot ratios by defining elementary entities and their relationships from the viewpoint of a complex adaptive system. Each entity in this case, a block in the city, is described according to its condition and potential for development, such as land function, accessibility, landscape control, and so on. This not only provides a rich yet subtle identification of each entity, but also creates the basis to establish dynamic interconnections between them. The similarity coefficient, calculated by the comparison between the different blocks’ factors fits well with the explanation of the spontaneous development of the city. The weight of every factor and the threshold of the similarity coefficient are both set as variables, with the optimized value recommended as a default, which ensures a multitudinal application of this software with a focus on different aspects of urban planning. The resultant self-regulatory system with flexible input is not only a credible tool for deriving plot ratios, but also an effective platform to activate urban design creations. The system, as a socio-technical tool, enhances the essential process of urban self-organization and hetero-organization.

title Fotografia digital e imagens multi-perspectivas no estudo de sítios históricos [Digital photography and multi-perspective image in the study of historical sities]
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary The creation of panoramic images for depicting urban landscape is a technique that has its origins in Antiquity. These images, which are known to represent large urban areas from multiple views, can be considered true works of art. Recently there has been a growing interest by some researchers, especially in the area of computer graphics, in the production of multi-perspective images for representing historic sites. However, the focus of these studies has been especially the computational aspects of this process, and there are few studies that address the impact and possibilities of these methodologies in historic preservation and urban planning. Realizing this shortcoming and considering the demand for a perspective more connected to cultural heritage, our proposal is to associate the excellent visual results of the multi-perspective images to the rich possibilities of computer simulation that can provide digital photography. The fact is that in recent years we have experienced technological innovations in the field of computer simulation that far exceeded our expectations. While most surveys of buildings are still based on the use of tape measure, pencil, paper and camera, the computer has become increasingly the main interface between the user and the information and is now the preferred instrument for the production and viewing of images, including the creation of virtual environments. Thus, this work seeks to explore the great potential which seems to exist in the combination of digital photography and the technique of multi-perspective image representation, which may provide new approaches and perspectives for the field of historic preservation. For that, we present a rapid and low cost methodology, developed in recent years, which generates orthophotos and metric multi-perspective images, useful for the analysis of built heritage and historic sites. In addition to that, we will also discuss further possible byproducts of this methodology, among which we could highlight the creation of three-dimensional models, and the analysis of building pathologies in combination with thermal photography. As a case study, we will present a representation of the Rua dos Caetés, a listed historic district in Belo Horizonte (MG), Brazil.

summary The craft of complex artefacts, questioning technological changes and reflecting social and cultural transformation used to be a common attitude in traditional artisans of the pre industrialized society. Traditional craftsman developed special knowledge and skills, implementing their own tools and techniques. After the industrial revolution, the main focus shifted to mass production, and the personalization of artefacts became labour intensive and more expensive. Simultaneously, with technical specialization and the fragmentation of knowledge, the designer’s, builder’s and manufacturer’s approach became more segregated. Currently, information technologies offer new opportunities to the craft of complex objects. The integration of digital process from conception to fabrication, can transform this situation, and as a result personalization is more affordable. Nevertheless, the introduction of these new techniques or tools is lacking a poetic synthesis for the use of technology, and the social and cultural implications that may result of this use. A competition for a public installation was an opportunity to use digital tools to conceive, manufacture and construct a complex structure with a small budget that would be impossible to attain using only traditional tools. At the same time, this project - genetic landscape- could be seen as a metaphor, alluding to the technological interference on the process of creating a new life, or a second nature.

summary Geosemiotics, defined as the study of meaning of placing signs in the material world, concerns the interaction of spatial, individual, social, and cultural contexts. Mobile technology, enabling spatial awareness successfully, has turned our living space into coordinates to broaden geosemiotics study. With interdisciplinary perspectives, there is an emerging potential to integrate the study of mobile spatial interaction and geosemiotics and we address several open issues of geospatial applications in this paper. Since indexicality is the focus of geosemiotics study, we focus on digital indexicalities referring to physical space. Physical indexical signs are usually set by government or organizations rather than individuals, and therefore we propose a new concept to place personal indexical signs in the physical space with mobile devices and augmented reality technology. Overlapped onto the physical world via visual, iconic, and metaphorical methods, what these unique personal semiotics bring is a living space with novel urban landscape and geosemiotics.

summary Capitalism does play a decisive role in the planning and generation of countless generic typologies in the urban landscape to a certain extent. This also includes the planning and generation of housing models. As a result of conventional planning that is based on ‘entrepreneurship subdivision’, only similar housing model for a specific income group is sometimes offered. In the long term, this kind of development occupies massive land, which is not suitable for sustainable growth and creates social segregation. This paper suggests an alternative approach of ‘associative design’. Parametric design software is utilized to generate the housing diversity. It aims to construct a population of housing units that together form a new neighborhood model based on the land specificity that emphasizes its economic and ecological factors.

summary The purpose of this research is to build digital urban landscape, based on as-built environmental information. Scans were made to an expressway and surrounding buildings through the center of a city. A 3D long-range laser scanner was used to record buildings, plants, and open spaces in a static configuration, plus the records of pedestrians, vehicles, objects in a dynamic form. As the scan tolerance can be controlled in less than 4 mm/50 m, the final urban information management system creates a precise description of objects with colors and textures feasible for internet browsing as well as for infrastructure dimensioning and construction monitoring.

summary Fire agencies on all levels try hard to save lives, properties, and natural resources. Accurate access to critical information is essential in this regard, many agencies around the world have embraced GIS as a tool that helps them balance needs, uses, and hazards to promote sustainability of the environment while identifying and limiting vulnerability. At Kingdom of Bahrain, Ministry of interior established the Geographic Security System (GSS) to enhance the emergency response. The 3D of the GSS Consisted of 3 main parts: (1) 3D for terrain model, (2) 3D model for entire targeted zones, and (3) 3D models for individual buildings. In this paper, the integration between GSS system and 3D model will be illustrated, and how this kind of integration could enhance decision support system (DSS) for fire safety at kingdom of Bahrain. On other hand, we will highlight the technical and legislation difficulties faced in this project. Also, the future steps to enhance DSS will be discussed.

source Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Yunlin (Taiwan) 22-25 April 2009, pp. 771-780
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2009.771
summary Both design researchers and cognitive scientists have developed various process models to study human creative behaviour in design. The models developed are often based on observations of design processes and analysis of design protocols. This research paper reports the-stateof- the-art in the area of cognition models that present design activities in conceptual designing. The research paper investigates the approaches of these cognition models. A new approach of a cognition activity model in conceptual designing is proposed. The new approach used in the introduced model takes into the account factors and activities that are related to the external environment of design (design medium). The external environment has an important role in the cognition activities and the evaluation process in a way that can hardly be ignored or neglected. The presented model of cognition activities in conceptual designing highlights two main factors employed in all the iteration loops of the model, namely: media use and representation. Case studies of architecture students’ designs have been analyzed. The analysis of these case studies helped in forming the proposed model. Various results have been concluded and reported.

summary CAAD is constantly provoking and raising many potentials, challenges and arguments in academia, practice, and even in the theory of architecture itself. This process starts with the pedagogy of designing and the ongoing questions such as how much of CAAD should be incorporated in teaching, and ends with digital design technologies and the new emerging questions such as how biologically inspired computational processes alter the form of our architecture and the typical design process. Architecture originates from peoples’ needs and beliefs. The new forms of digital architecture generate debates in terms of various important issues, ranging from emotional and social factors to sustainability and warming climate. The focus area of the conference can be shaped, as follows: considering all these potentials, challenges, and arguments, which we have to benefit from and cope with, are there truly legitimate concerns about the future of our architecture and its content in particular from human and environmental dimensions? Can we develop our own ways of benefiting from the technology that cater to our environment and culture? Can we still see the form of architecture in the traditional way or should we change our perspectives? In other words the conference concentrates on bridging between the new digital form and the traditional human content.

title The Use of the Smart Geometry through Various Design Processes: Using the programming platform (parametric features) and generative components
source Digitizing Architecture: Formalization and Content [4th International Conference Proceedings of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2009) / ISBN 978-99901-06-77-0], Manama (Kingdom of Bahrain), 11-12 May 2009, pp. 297-304
summary The emergence of parametric generative design tools and prototyping manufacturing technology led to radical changes in architectural morphologies. This change increased the opportunity to develop innovative smart geometries. Integrating these algorithms in the parametric softwares led to variations in building design concepts increasing alternatives and decreasing the repetitive work previously needed in conventional CAD software. The chosen software in this research is Generative Components (GC). It is a software design tool for an associative and parametric design platform. It is tested for using Global Variables with associative functions during the concept creation and form GC comprises features. The results presented in this research may be considered an introduction to the smart geometry revolution. It deals with the generative design which applied in the design process from conceptual design phase, defining the problem, exploring design solutions, then how to develop the design phases. Office building is a building type which encourages new forms that needs computational processes to deal with repetitive functions and modular spaces and enclosed in a flexible creative structural skin. Generative design helps the office buildings to be arranged, analysed, and optimized using parameters in early stages in design process. By the end of the research, the use of the smart geometry in a high rise office building is defined and explained. The research is divided into three parts, first a summary of the basic theories of office buildings design and the sustainable requirements that affect it, and should be integrated. Secondly, the previous experiences in generating office buildings by Norman foster and Sergio Araya. At last, a case study is proposed to test and evaluate the use of the parametric generative methodology in designing an office building with specific emphasis on the function, environmental aspects and form generation using Generative Components (GC) Software.

summary In the summer of 2018, our collaboration was awarded a University Design Fellowship from the Exhibit Columbus organization to design, fabricate, and build a large pavilion in Columbus, Indiana as part of a biannual contemporary architecture exhibition. Our proposal for the competition was a pavilion that would double as an ecological education center. Our inspiration for this program was triggered in part by our reading of Jane Bennett’s materialist philosophy outlined in her book Vibrant Matter (2009). Through Bennett’s lens, our design rendered our site’s context as an animate field, replete with pre-existing material composites that we wanted to celebrate through a series of displays, information boards, and artificial lighting. In this, the installation would feature samples of local plants, minerals, and rocks, indigenous to Southern Indiana.
