summary The deconstruction (DeCon) and repurposing (ReCon) of existing structures and materials are worthwhile and relevant endeavors given the potential for such procedures to be more economically and environmentally sustainable than conventional construction methods. Conventional construction methods often utilize virgin materials for the production of architecture, requiring extensive energy to harvest, process, and manufacture the materials for use. Today, we must face the fact that we exist in a carbon-sensitive economy, and demand design approaches that reduce architecture’s impact on the environment. Our goal was to develop a CADCAM ReCon design methodology that would have the potential to mitigate carbon consumption. To explore this goal, students engaged a design research project that looked for novel and innovative approaches to the DeCon and ReCon of an existing barn. The student researchers created parametric models and surface designs derived from the existing materials. The digitally fabricated tectonic design constructions resulted in economical, novel, and material-efficient design methodologies for DeCon and ReCon.

summary The purpose of this project is to provide an interactive platform for clients and design teams to evaluate the consequences of shape, form, and briefing decisions on the energy use, embodied energy, and capital / life-cycle cost of a tall building early in the design process. The Tall Building Simulation (TBS) model is the result of a collaborative partnership between Aedas, Arup, Hilson Moran (HM), and Davis Langdon (DL). It is estimated that most decisions determining the sustainability of a project are made in the first 1 percent of a project’s program, whereas the majority of the information required for sustainability assessment is not usually available or examined until after the concept stage. By this time, most solutions would need design or briefing changes that are too costly to implement. Using the TBS model, architects, engineers, and clients can simultaneously explore the impact of typical technical and design decisions on a tall building’s energy footprint and its dynamic relationship to cost at the briefing stage.

summary Reinforced concrete has been one of the essential materials for modern architecture for the last hundred years. Its use is entirely global, having been adopted by all cultures and styles since its invention in the late 19th century. Although its value is excellent due to its low cost, durability and adaptability, its environmental impact is significant, being, in fact, one of the most polluting industries in the world (Babor et al. 2009). This experimental project will research a more sustainable use of concrete, exploring a new form of reusable concrete formwork that will ideally reduce the CO2 footprint by removing wood waste in the casting process and replacing it with adaptable metal components. The modular part-based system for the concrete casting also attempts to simplify one of the current complexities for concrete construction, the Skilled-Labour shortage. (Yusoff et al. 2021). To mitigate this problem, the project also proposes using an Augmented Assembly logic for the casting parts to guide the ensemble and dismantle the formwork through an optimised algorithmic logic. The use of Augmented Reality as a replacement for traditional paper instructions will facilitate access to more workers to this construction art and potentially improve access to optimised use of concrete in developing communities with restricted building technological resources.

Internet evolution is fast and unpredictable, propelling deep changes at different levels of our society. Spinoffs, unexpected outcomes are result of those changes, unfolding uncertain, unstable scenarios. This paper discusses the question of what could be the way to organize the process of registering, documenting and online publishing, native digital, three-dimensional content of Architecture, assuming the critical issue of information integration.

summary The paper describes exploratory work in the design, construction, and habitation of a virtual structure (VS) nested within an Internet-based multi-user environment and serving a geographically distributed collective of architecture students and faculty. In addition to a discourse on the design and implementation parameters that were used, the paper seeks to provide findings that make reference to the quality of teaching/learning experience of users and the effectiveness of the interaction among users while working on a common architectural design project. This experience will further contribute to the knowledge base that will be needed in the design of virtual architecture.

summary This paper reports an investigation of the establishment and performance of a distributed computer rendering system for advanced computer graphics production within a centralized university information technology environment. It explores the proposal that the use of distributed computer rendering systems in industry and universities offers synergies for university-industry collaborative agreements. Claims that cluster computing and rendering systems are of benefit for computer graphics productions are to be tested within a standard higher education environment. A small scale distributed computer rendering system was set up to investigate the development of the optimum use of intranet and internet systems for computer generated feature film production and architectural visualisation. The work entailed using monitoring, comparative performance analysis and interviews with relevant stakeholders. The research provides important information for practitioners and the general public and heralds the initiation of a Centre for Visualization and Animation research within the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, University of Adelaide.

summary The base of informal urban settlements (slums) is housing, basic urban cell with both habitation and productive functions - tertiary, social and environmental. Intermediate spaces between housing and the city (the ground floor and the free space between the house and the street) become mediating mechanism between the individual and collective life, hence, urban tissue catalysts. New technologies get inserted in this intermediate scale through locutorios (premise offering public telephones and Internet connection), key spaces in social life.This scale between the house and the city allows proximity, accessibility, appropriation and identity, and shows rhe capacity of intermediate scale to absorve urban transformations.

summary Since mid 1990s internet has been developing rapidly to become the most booming and emerging media in late history and play an important role in living. Therefore, how to design an interface of easy to use has become an important issue pertaining to Human Computer Interaction. Norman (1986) proposed in the human computer interaction, there is a design model in the mind of designer. In turn, the designer will follow design model and to design a set of system image that is functional, learnable, and usable. Therefore, we want to understand the critical factor of influencing toward website construction, we should find out the mental model that web design team at first. In this paper, we using the Interactive Qualitative Analysis (IQA) approach. The data collection method of the participant of the focus group’s silent brainstorming is adopted. Further analyze web design team’s the conceptual model on website construction through inductive coding and axial coding. The result shows the affinities of 9 web design team is thus produced. And, Business Decision, Team Performance, Self-Fulfillment and Entrepreneur Communication are main influence factor. These factors can lead trend and goal of a website.

title The Effect of Computer Mediation on Collaborative Designing

summary There has been considerable research in studying collaborative designing using protocol analysis. However, it is not possible to compare these studies because they use different models and have their own coding schemes. A coding scheme based on the Function-Behaviour-Structure (FBS) ontology has been proposed as the basis of a universal coding scheme that transcends the domain of application, the task being studied, and the number of designers being studied. This paper presents results from using the FBS coding scheme and sequential analysis to study the differences between face-to-face design collaboration and synchronized design collaboration using NetMeeting via the Internet. In this case the formulation and re-formulation processes are richer in the NetMeeting design collaboration. In the face-to-face session they are quicker in arriving at the structure of the design.

summary Architecture is affected by the information technology, one must consider two conditions: that the physical spaces of architecture as we have always known it (enclosure, form and permanence) will without a doubt persevere, and that it will exist alongside the virtual architecture, surfacing in the digital domain of the internet. Museums are now being constructed, navigated, experienced, comprehended, and altered in their virtual states by countless people across global networks. This new architecture of liquidity, flux and mutability is predicated on technological advances and fuelled by basic human desire to probe the unknown. The path that both types of architecture, the real and the virtual, take will be one of convergence. VR seems to be the next logical step in the path laid by CAD, but it will have a more extensive impact, since it not only transforms the way architects design and visualize, but can also be integrated into the final product of architecture itself: such as museums. The main goal of this paper is to emphasize the new typology of museums of the future in which digital technologies support all kinds of museum activities such as gathering, preserving, researching, exhibiting, and educating. Also, to introduce digital technologies for the digital museum such as media and new human interface technologies for novel exhibition styles and data processing technologies for digital archiving of cultural or historical artifacts. The paper highlights the technology used in this new typology of museums; the virtual museum. It also discusses the advantages and the disadvantages of the virtual museum.

summary The purpose of this research is to build digital urban landscape, based on as-built environmental information. Scans were made to an expressway and surrounding buildings through the center of a city. A 3D long-range laser scanner was used to record buildings, plants, and open spaces in a static configuration, plus the records of pedestrians, vehicles, objects in a dynamic form. As the scan tolerance can be controlled in less than 4 mm/50 m, the final urban information management system creates a precise description of objects with colors and textures feasible for internet browsing as well as for infrastructure dimensioning and construction monitoring.

summary The steel construction industry should also benefit from collaborative work advantages developed according to concurrent engineering concepts i.e. integrated system for design and planning. This paper presents an integrated system centred on the use of the Internet as the communication medium, a central database, a data model, using a well-known protocol for the communication of the various involved programs, and also presents the development of a system architecture prototype for integrating its various satellite modules. The central database uses concepts developed for the CIS/2 protocol, conceived for the CIMsteel project, that incorporated ideas of segments of the steel construction industry.

summary In the current design practice, new digital tools have emerged -visual- also called Infrastructures (Perkel, 2011) such as; Behance 2003, Pinterest 2009, Archdaily 2008, Instagram (2010) -to cite the most recognized in the creative field in Argentina-, which promote different opportunities and support the creative process and problem solving, making it easier for designers to find inspiring material through the Internet. However, very little is known about how these new practices affect professional work, how they themselves see it and the tensions they generate.This article will present the results of a general survey applied to expert designers as part of the first stage of the Doctoral Research project. summary “Re-shaping artificially the Earth on human needs” implies a very complex industrial system that is performed through a very complex process. It consists of a collective, finalized and plural-constrained process, scheduled by phases, made up by several actors, characterized by the co-presence of numerous and very different (non-) specialist skills. In this paper we define the enhancement path of a web-based collaborative environment – discussed in a previous work – laying upon actual design entities representation an innovative logical level for knowledge formalization. It is presented an example of end-users requirement formalization, aimed at supporting the designers in the process by means of rule-based project suggestions.

summary Recently, the number of vacant traditional townhouses has been increasing, as cities’ central districts decay. In this paper, aiming at the activation of a region by effective use of vacant traditional townhouses, a rented house use strategy is proposed. First of all, the current number and potential vacant traditional townhouses and the intentions of local residents and population of surrounding area concerning to their use are accurately surveyed. As a result, it becomes clear that the rented house use of vacant traditional townhouses is necessary and possible. Next, the investigation with current tenants in their negotiation processes with vacant house owners is executed. Furthermore, some approach cases online are searched, and as a result, the following 3 points can be said: (1) it is important to collect and organize information of the vacant traditional townhouses in order to facilitate the rented house use; (2) a trustful real estate broker is necessary; (3) to consider local population expectances and understanding is necessary. Finally, the result of these is received, it is proposed that the database of the vacant traditional townhouses with VR be constructed and it be opened for public access on the Internet. In addition, the establishment of the resident organization for the rented house use as a nucleus of the use promotion strategy is also proposed.

summary Fire agencies on all levels try hard to save lives, properties, and natural resources. Accurate access to critical information is essential in this regard, many agencies around the world have embraced GIS as a tool that helps them balance needs, uses, and hazards to promote sustainability of the environment while identifying and limiting vulnerability. At Kingdom of Bahrain, Ministry of interior established the Geographic Security System (GSS) to enhance the emergency response. The 3D of the GSS Consisted of 3 main parts: (1) 3D for terrain model, (2) 3D model for entire targeted zones, and (3) 3D models for individual buildings. In this paper, the integration between GSS system and 3D model will be illustrated, and how this kind of integration could enhance decision support system (DSS) for fire safety at kingdom of Bahrain. On other hand, we will highlight the technical and legislation difficulties faced in this project. Also, the future steps to enhance DSS will be discussed.

The research paper investigates the approaches of these cognition models. A new approach of a cognition activity model in conceptual designing is proposed. The new approach used in the introduced model takes into the account factors and activities that are related to the external environment of design (design medium). The external environment has an important role in the cognition activities and the evaluation process in a way that can hardly be ignored or neglected. The presented model of cognition activities in conceptual designing highlights two main factors employed in all the iteration loops of the model, namely: media use and representation. Case studies of architecture students’ designs have been analyzed. The analysis of these case studies helped in forming the proposed model. Various results have been concluded and reported.
