title From Digital Heritage Documentation to 3D Virtual Reconstruction and Recreation for Heritage Promotion and Reinterpretation: The Case of the iHeritage Project

summary In the last two decades, the digital age Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) development and concerns combined with rapid technology have permitted the dissemination of different digital applications (including digital documentation, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), digital gaming, and holograms etc.) oriented toward past, present and future communication using digital three-dimensional audio-visual content. Today, we must acknowledge that 3D virtual 3D reconstruction and recreation has become an established way to build, understand, reinterpret, and promote Cultural Heritage (CH). The virtual 3D reconstruction world and multimedia industry are often considered potential marketing channels for World Heritage Sites (WHS) and heritage tourism. 3D digital/virtual reconstruction merges and embodies subjectivity in one process, playing an attractive role in heritage tourism destinations and creating image experiences, providing the first enjoyable interpretation and information for most audiences. Based on the EU-funded iHERITAGE project ICT Mediterranean platform for the UNESCO CH, this paper attempts to examine some insights into constructing the optimistic image of heritage promotion and tourism in the context of CH as it flows through both physical and virtual spaces to give a glimpse of the future of virtual reconstruction. It illustrates the development of the concepts and practice, challenges and opportunities, advantages and disadvantages, and the negative and the positive sides of the related issues of only 3D digital reconstructions, and some issues concerning the ethics based on the International Chartres and Conventions mainly in the field of scientific visualisation, such as the London Charter (2009) and Seville Principles (2011). Finally, as a practical dimension, it presents some representative examples of 3D digital/virtual reconstruction of characteristic monuments of the WHS of Nabataean Petra in Jordan for the first time.

It also shows how media art practice can be used as a reference for the creative process in the architectural field. Building knowledge spaces through creative processes is a challenge based on the latest reconfiguration of the relations among artists, artworks and observers, which were enhanced after digital technology. Designing knowledge space as collaborative process, we assume that our examination contribute to any field by stimulating the transitions from analog to digital culture.

summary Through the progress of digital media, dynamic concepts contribute to vivid forms. Nevertheless, these forms still present static space, which cannot reflect the designer’s dynamic concept, a shape that changes over time. This is a setback for design and fabrication. Hence many researchers turn to designing dynamic architecture. However, the current development restricted by technical threshold is prone to solve the variation of functions instead of aesthetic-oriented changeable form. It is obvious that the difference between “statics” and “dynamics” becomes a watershed of aesthetics and functions. This research attempts to eliminate the above-mentioned barrier and to suggest a new CAD/CAM fabrication procedure based on aesthetics and reveal key tectonic factors that affect dynamic architecture.

summary CAAD is constantly provoking and raising many potentials, challenges and arguments in academia, practice, and even in the theory of architecture itself. This process starts with the pedagogy of designing and the ongoing questions such as how much of CAAD should be incorporated in teaching, and ends with digital design technologies and the new emerging questions such as how biologically inspired computational processes alter the form of our architecture and the typical design process. Architecture originates from peoples’ needs and beliefs. The new forms of digital architecture generate debates in terms of various important issues, ranging from emotional and social factors to sustainability and warming climate. The focus area of the conference can be shaped, as follows: considering all these potentials, challenges, and arguments, which we have to benefit from and cope with, are there truly legitimate concerns about the future of our architecture and its content in particular from human and environmental dimensions? Can we develop our own ways of benefiting from the technology that cater to our environment and culture? Can we still see the form of architecture in the traditional way or should we change our perspectives? In other words the conference concentrates on bridging between the new digital form and the traditional human content.

summary A review of national government literature indicates that today’s knowledge-driven economy demands a workforce equipped with complex skills and attitudes. Examples of these skills and attitudes are general problems solving, meta-cognitive skills, critical thinking and lifelong learning. Reviews of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry indicates a gap between architecture practice and education. The Egan report states that there is a need for a change of style, culture and process within the construction industry and it identified five driving forces, the report also recognised that the achievement of these driving forces is linked to training and education. Education must not only teach the necessary technical skills and knowledge, but also the culture of teamwork, collaborative work and creativity. The construction boom in the United Arab Emirates combined with the country’s mission to highly educate and train its nationals to be able to tackle market challenges provoked the necessity of implementing the culture of creativity and collaboration in education system. On the other hand, use of technology in education has been proven to facilitate and enhance the learning process. This paper will highlight the importance of implementing the virtual design studio as a technlogical platform in architecture education in the UAE in a way that aims to promote the culture of creativity and collaboration through the use of technology.

summary In architecture schools, where the ‘studio culture’ lies at the heart of students’ learning, taught courses, particularly technology ones, are often seen as secondary or supplementary units. Successful delivery of such courses, where students can act effectively, be motivated and engaged, is a rather demanding task requiring careful planning and the use of various teaching styles. A recent challenge that faces architecture education today, and subsequently influences the way technology courses are being designed, is the growing trend in practice towards environmentally responsive design and the need for graduates with new skills in sustainable construction and urban ecology (HEFCE’s consultation document, 2005). This article presents the role of innovative simulation modelling tools in the enhancement of the student learning experience and professional development. Reference is made to a teaching practice that has recently been applied at Portsmouth School of Architecture in the United Kingdom and piloted at Deakin University in Australia. The work focuses on the structure and delivery of one of the two main technology units in the second year architecture programme that underwent two main phases of revision during the academic years 2009/10 and 2010/11. The article examines the inclusion of advanced daylight simulation modelling tools in the unit programme, and measures the effectiveness of enhancing its delivery as a key component of the curriculum on the student learning experience. A main objective of the work was to explain whether or not the introduction of a simulation modelling component, and the later improvement of its integration with the course programme and assessment, has contributed to a better learning experience and level of engagement. Student feedback and the grade distribution pattern over the last three academic years were collected and analyzed. The analysis of student feedback on the revised modelling component showed a positive influence on the learning experience and level of satisfaction and engagement. An improvement in student performance was also recorded over the last two academic years and following the implementation of new assessment design.

The work takes an emergent approach, evolving a design strategy through the early engagement of stakeholders. The paper discusses research in a design-led creative intersection between media technology, culture and the arts in the built environment. The case study discusses opportunities for the enhancement of a university campus experience, learning culture and community, through the provision of an integrated digital presence within campus architecture and urban spaces. It considers types of information architecture (Manovich, 2001) and designs for use in urban settings to create communication-rich, advanced and interactive designed spaces (Haeusler, 2009). The presented research investigates how to create a strategy for display technologies and networked communications to transform and augment the constructed reality of the built environment, allowing new formats of media activity.

These characteristics are opposed to the perspectival paradigm’s principles, which are the base of modern architecture. Therefore, a modernist practice in Brazil meets an extra level of difficulty because it has to cope with these rather playful aspects. If we consider the second-order cybernetics and its conversation theory, the plasticity that characterizes Brazilian culture may stop being an obstacle and, if coupled with digital technologies, may become the very basis for a truly modern Brazilian architectural practice.

summary Systems of feedback loops and cybernetic methods have influenced for decades the production and consumption networks and supply and demand chains in computer-integrated manufacturing. These mechanisms contribute to the increased efficiency of production, expanding the ability of both manufacturers and production engineers to create a workplace with smoother supply-chain management, as well as economies of scale and scope that are contingent on increased capitalism in a networked, globalized world. Mobility and flexibility are both physical and philosophical imperatives, aided by new small-scaled controls such as handheld wireless devices, which also contribute to a rising culture of nomadism. The shrinking scale of technologies and facilities has provided the mobile worker with numerous opportunities within complexly networked systems, forming a new paradigm for urban production spaces of the future. summary Residential property value is affected by several factors during its useful time. . These factors include people’s lifestyles, traditions and culture, and the way they live and interact with the built environment. The property characteristics such as its location, building quality, adaptability, and energy efficiency would also have an impact on the property value. On the other hand, the nD CAD research that emerged in the late 1990s proposed endless dimensions of CAD modelling that would incorporate the building regulations’ requirements, basic user needs and client requirements. However, there is a need to implement lifelong parameters that would have significant effect on the property value in 3D models during the early stages of design. This can be done through a knowledge base integrated into a 3D model and links the lifelong property’s and the user’s characteristics with the property’s value. A survey was carried out on banks and Real Estate Development Fund (REDF) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to find out the level of impact of lifelong users and property characteristics on the property’s value. The results of the survey showed a number of lifelong property and user driven parameters that may have major impact on the property’s value. The implementation of lifelong parameters in nD CAD models would have a number of benefits. It would provide the decision makers such as banks and investors with a tool to assess the level of impact of possible lifelong factors on the property value and consider alternative schemes. Designers would use it during the early stages of design to produce optimum design solutions that provide an adequate product that is evaluated regarding its lifelong value to the end users. Eventually it would provide a comfortable environment that is tailored to the user’s needs and aspirations, while reserving the property’s lifelong value.

summary Both design researchers and cognitive scientists have developed various process models to study human creative behaviour in design. The models developed are often based on observations of design processes and analysis of design protocols. This research paper reports the-stateof- the-art in the area of cognition models that present design activities in conceptual designing. The research paper investigates the approaches of these cognition models. A new approach of a cognition activity model in conceptual designing is proposed. The new approach used in the introduced model takes into the account factors and activities that are related to the external environment of design (design medium). The external environment has an important role in the cognition activities and the evaluation process in a way that can hardly be ignored or neglected. The presented model of cognition activities in conceptual designing highlights two main factors employed in all the iteration loops of the model, namely: media use and representation. Case studies of architecture students’ designs have been analyzed. The analysis of these case studies helped in forming the proposed model. Various results have been concluded and reported.

summary The Catoptric Surface research project explores methods of reflecting daylight through a building envelope to form an image-based pattern of light on the interior environment. This research investigates the generation of atmospheric effects from daylighting projected onto architectural surfaces within a built environment in an attempt to amplify or reduce spatial perception. The mapping of variable organizations of light onto existing or new surfaces creates a condition where the perception of space does not rely on form alone. This condition creates a visual effect of a formless atmosphere and affects the way people use the space. Often the desired quantity and quality of daylight varies due to factors such as physiological differences due to age or the types of tasks people perform (Lechner 2009). Yet the dominant mode of thought toward the use of daylighting tends to promote a homogeneous environment, in that the resulting lighting level is the same throughout a space. This research project questions the desire for uniform lighting levels in favor of variegated and heterogeneous conditions. The main objective of this research is the production of a unique facade system that is capable of dynamically redirecting daylight to key locations deep within a building. Mirrors in a vertical array are individually adjusted via stepper motors in order to reflect more or less intense daylight into the interior space according to sun position and an image-based map. The image-based approach provides a way to specifically target lighting conditions, atmospheric effects, and the perception of space.

summary This paper argues that familiarity is the tool that enables the understanding of space abstraction and representation. Familiarity in this context is independent from embodied interaction, and is crudely based on the connection between the various similar images of space; in this particular case, virtual space. Our investigation into the nature of human interaction with space, its abstraction and its representation is based on the critical contrast between the outcomes of interaction with two virtual versions of a physical reality; the first version is a non-linear interactive graphical abstraction of the space where no assertions or indicators are given as to whether or not there is a relationship between the abstraction and its physical reality, whereas the second is a none-linear interactive 3D virtual environment clearly representing the physical space in question. The paper utilises qualitative methods of investigation in order to gain an insight into human embodied experience in space, its abstraction and representation.

summary This study aims to present a classification of methodological procedures for using computer programmes to simulate architectural historical heritage. Produced for a Master’s Degree dissertation in Architecture, the methodology was developed based on several analyses of applications, possibilities and restrictions, with the assistance of photogrammetric reconstruction and several computer-graphics programmes. The files generated enable production of animations recording the changes experienced by buildings at various historical periods. These procedures were applied to the simulation of several buildings around the Praça Dante Alighieri in the centre of Caxias do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, demonstrating their appropriateness and effectiveness and also showing the potential of computer-simulation resources for the historical environment, both educationally and in appreciation of architectural heritage.

summary We investigate the recent coincidence of rapid global urbanization and unprecedented formal freedom in architectural design and ask whether this coincidence is an uneasy one. To study an extreme case of the new exotic geometries made possible through CAAD, we employ algebraic surfaces to experimentally design architecture in an university-based research and experimental design project. Such surfaces exhibit unprecedented complexity and new geometric and topological features yet are highly sound and harmonious. We continue and extend our research presented at the eCAADe 2009 conference in Istanbul.

summary Responsiveness to site conditions and environment is one of the axioms of architectural design. However, most students’ design is made in a non-geo-coordinated cyberspace through CAAD design and thus leading to “flying” proposals” that are not attached to the context. GIS teaches students in architecture to initially refer to real locations as the space in which they design is geo-coordinated and provides the wider context of the project. Along the design process, the project surroundings from macro scale; that is the globe, to the micro-scale that is reflected in the existing buildings, the road network and the topography are constantly present. At the end stage, the project is seen not as a free standing building but rather as an integral part in a real place on Earth. The 3-D urban visualization gives the possibility of evaluating the degree of success of place-making and the fitness of the project to its context. The aim of the paper is to present how a GIS course can support CAAD and improve the architectural design process as well as the quality of the design output towards a contextual architecture. The paper is based on the experience of the author who is architects and urban planner, in teaching design studios and Urban Planning based on GIS as an elective course to graduating students in architecture at the University of Bahrain. It presents an alternative method that is called Permanent Presence of the Real World PPRW.
