title From texture to volume: an investigation in quasi-crystalline systems
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary The relation between texture, pattern and massing is a fundamental question in architecture. Classical architecture, as Leon Battista Alberti states in “De re aedificatoria” (Book VI, Chapter 2), is developed through massing and structure first; texture is added afterwards to give the bold massing and structure beauty. Only the ornamentation adds pulcritudo to the raw structure and massing. Rather than starting with a volume and applying texture afterwards, the Digital Girih project started with textural operations that informed the overall volume later. The stereometric, top-down methodology is questioned through the bottom-up methodology of the Girih project. Girih lines of traditional Islamic patterns were used as a starting point. The aspect of 3-dimensionality was developed analogue as well as digital, using the deformability of different materials at various scales and digital construction techniques as parameters. The flexibility within the Girih rules allowed the system to adapt to different tasks and situations and to react to different conditions between 2- and 3- dimensionality. The project in that way explored a bottom-up process of form generation. This paper will describe the process of the project and explain the necessity of digital tools, such as Grasshopper and Rhino, and fabrication tools, such as laser cutter and CNC fabrication technology, that were essential for this process.

title Generative Craft
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary Popular discourses and representations of automation in design practice have often committed to an ontology of design and creativity where both materials, media and tools are rendered passive actors in design processes. The ways in which these narratives are articulated have consequences for how the materiality of media and of construction elements is construed in both design discourses and environments. Providing a brief critical history of the mutual construction of design technologies and notions of creativity and design is a concern of this paper, which concludes with a critical re-writing of disembodied conceptions of automation in design.

title Digital Craft Meets the Ancient Art of Ceramics: Would the Bauhaus Approve?
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary The Bauhaus was founded upon the controversial premise that emergent mechanical processes offered new and creative ways to explore materials. Today, we encounter equally tendentious scenarios where the designer often appears one step further removed—automated CNC machines are driven by computational machines. Like the early activities of the Bauhaus some view digital pursuits with suspicion; however, digital design/fabrication is the “Nächster Bauhaus Bewegun” offering opportunities for design innovation equal in significance to that of the Bauhaus. This paper partially examines the theoretical implications of digital design/fabrication, then presents a collaboration between an architect and artist re-examining the architectural cladding possibilities using digital tools to shape one of mankind’s most venerable materials—ceramics.

summary Our digital carving experiments reveal ways to invite discovery into the design process. Working with sketched lines, handcrafted finishing, geometric overlay, and tool path coding can lead a designer to unexpected results. Concentrating on forming processes moving through material over time encourages open-ended play. Iteratively examining how computer operations generate carved results provides a craftsman’s understanding of tools and materials.

title Preserving memories with digital media: a methodology for the reconstruction of Castelnuovo Village
source Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Hong Kong 7-10 April 2010, pp. 83-92
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2010.083
summary The historical centre of the village of Castelnuovo (located in Abruzzo, a region in central of Italy) was seriously damaged by the earthquake of the 6th of April 2009. Following the survey by the Civil Protection, all dwellings have been classified as unsuitable for habitation. The village should be either abandoned or totally rebuilt. But which is its value? Is there something worth of being preserved? If observed from a biodiversity point of view, or more precisely from a “cultural biodiversity” point of view, the historical centre possess interesting materials and immaterial characteristics. These qualities constitute real guidelines for a possible recovery project. Since there is not any possibility to make a survey of the inner village because of its destruction by the earthquake, in this research we have decided to use information technology, in order to rebuilt it and study it in a three-dimensional environment. In this paper we describe the theoretical basis, the method of elaboration and the instruments we have used to locate and evaluate the memories that should be preserved in a new project. Starting with a traditional documentation, such as photographs and drawings, we have used a variety of software (graphics editing program, CAD, 3D modeler, videogame 3D-engine), because of the several hypothesis considered.

title Appropriating Donald Schön
source Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Yunlin (Taiwan) 22-25 April 2009, pp. 483-492
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2009.483
summary Donald Schön embraces a constructivist approach to learning and research., characterising designing as a reflective conversation between designer and the materials of a design situation. Accordingly, Schön’s views on digital design support are based on his valuing of indeterminacy, surprise and ambiguity as opportunities to develop new understanding and insight. His criticism of technical rationality is directed towards the privileging of formal and codified knowledge over embodied and tacit forms of knowing. While Schön’s work is increasingly acknowledged in recent CAAD research, respective publications typically remain within the technical rationality perspective. Based on several characteristic examples, this paper examines how Schön’s ideas are absorbed into a perspective incongruous to his own, concluding with a discussion of potential new research approaches that sustain Schön’s values.

title Virtual Organism: Generative Tool Based on Multi-Agent System
source Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Yunlin (Taiwan) 22-25 April 2009, pp. 625-634

summary A multi-agent system (MAS) is efficient as it can emulate a variety of organisms in natural science due to the interactions between agents, which make artificial systems responsive and adaptive. In “Bamboo Workshop” involved flexible structures, MAS was employed to create virtual organism in computational environment towards an innovative process in installation design. A generative tool with friendly user interface was developed for both observation and intervention besides debugging. At the same time investigations were carried on the complex behaviours of the system through graphic statistics. Integrated with the generative tool, a construction system made up of bamboo materials was set up to build a series of mobile and flexible installations. This experiment suggests that the virtual organism has the potential for being a part of the design intelligence, beyond a mere digital tool.

source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary The design and fabrication of an exhibition display project was taken as an opportunity to explore parametric design with a group of students in Chile. This article presents the experience of a design studio workshop exercise by addressing the introduction of parametric design principles and the development of a built academic project through a team based design and fabrication process. The strategy followed by the team was to utilize parametric models as a mean to materialize driving variables of the project into unexpected geometries to be deployed in different public spaces in Santiago. Context, time scale and available technology resulted in a non-obvious combination of advanced digital design and fabrication techniques and low-cost mass-produced materials.

source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary The main objective of this research is to determine through the use of a CAD-BIM system, the emission of CO2 in the pre-operational phase of construction. Based on a case study in quantitative analysis of materials and the BIM system, it was possible to quantify the amount of CO2 emitted during the pre-operational life cycle of a building. By using this feature you can provide, before the begining of construction, the total CO2 that will released to the environment, and other analysis.

title Material-Based Design Computation: Tiling Behavior
source ACADIA 09: reForm( ) - Building a Better Tomorrow [Proceedings of the 29th Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) ISBN 978-0-9842705-0-7] Chicago (Illinois) 22-25 October, 2009), pp. 122-129
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.acadia.2009.122
summary From natural objects to man-made artifacts, tiling is all around us: it is the act of rationalizing highly complex form by breaking it up into smaller, continuous components. If well pursued, tiled objects can be easily designed and assembled. However, a geometric-centric view of tiling, whereby a predefined form determines the shape, size, and organization of tiles, has victimized the field of digital design. This paper questions the role of tiling as rationalizing method and offers an alternative theoretical framework and technical grounding for tiling behavior: the act of generation-through-tessellation informed by material behavior. The tools developed are implemented in the design of a 3D-printed chaise lounge, using multiple materials. The technical objective is to introduce a quantitative characterization and analysis of property mapping, as it is applied to a tiling algorithm using Voronoi cell tessellation. The network of tessellated Voronoi cells is used as an element in the Voronoi Finite Element Method (V-FEM) that the author developed. Various characterization functions and geometric parameters are generated, and V-FEM is executed for plane-strain analysis of doubly curved surfaces, from which global and local responses are evaluated.

source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages, Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009, PUM, 2009, pp. 673- 686
summary In 1995, Robin Evans points out in his book The Projective Cast how the development of techniques changed architecture and the space inhabited in times of Gothic and early Renaissance. We see a parallel phenomenon today, where the interplay of technology and tool gives shape to new design (Kolarevic 2005). Yet in opposition to the interwoven fields of design and craft of the late Gothic, today’s building sector is enormously diversified, and a growing complexity in the building process and number of used materials can be observed. This gives an opposite point of departure into a more integrated field of design and innovation in architectural design and building industry.

title Digital Technologies in Built Environment – An Overview
source Fifth International Conference on Construciton in the 21st Century, Collaboration and Integration in Engineering, Management and Technology, May 20-22, 2009, Istanbul, Turkey.
summary Abstract: Digital technologies are influencing the way we live. It is also shaping the way we design, construct, and manage the built environment around us. From collaborating design and construction ideas to creating the actual design to communicating onsite to training construction workers on health and safety issues there are different levels of involvement of the information and telecommunication technologies in the construction industry. Use of these diverse digital technologies is also spread through to the manufacturing building materials, public planning, and inspection process. The aim of the study is to offer a structured overview, which encapsulates these digital technologies that are being used and can be used in the AEC and property professionals. This study will also explore how these technologies can be introduced to the future professionals who will be the part of this digital practice. The study considers the need for a seamless approach to integrate digital technologies in built environment education and industry where blend of theoretical understanding of the subject matter and technical competence is required.

title Computing Architectural Materiality: The Hyper-natural Aspirations of the New Paradigm
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 7 - no. 4, 555-564
summary The article is based on the premise that in the history of architecture there has always been an intimate relationship between architectural ideas and the various perceptions of the alive. On this premise the article focuses on and investigates the relationship of the contemporary architectural paradigm labeled as digital, parametric or morphogenetic with the alive. Its objective is to reveal its new profound reasonings which lead and nourish its creative expression; to articulate its new ethos with the extended use of advanced information technologies for the creation of architectural forms, but also for the generation of a broad spectrum of new building materials with properties predefined by the architect. The immaterial, the hybrid, the composite, the mutable, the transformable, the interactive, the dynamic, do not only appear as properties of certain architectural creations or building materials, but also as values expressing this ethos and declaring a new relationship or a reconsidered admiration of the natural, the living, the alive. The article concludes that the new hyper-natural aspiration of the contemporary paradigm constitutes a new dynamic expression of architectural materiality and its guiding intellect.

source 4th International Conference Proceedings of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2009)[ISBN 978-99901-06-77-0], Manama (Kingdom of Bahrain), 11-12 May 2009, 463 p.
summary CAAD is constantly provoking and raising many potentials, challenges and arguments in academia, practice, and even in the theory of architecture itself. This process starts with the pedagogy of designing and the ongoing questions such as how much of CAAD should be incorporated in teaching, and ends with digital design technologies and the new emerging questions such as how biologically inspired computational processes alter the form of our architecture and the typical design process. Architecture originates from peoples’ needs and beliefs. The new forms of digital architecture generate debates in terms of various important issues, ranging from emotional and social factors to sustainability and warming climate. The focus area of the conference can be shaped, as follows: considering all these potentials, challenges, and arguments, which we have to benefit from and cope with, are there truly legitimate concerns about the future of our architecture and its content in particular from human and environmental dimensions? Can we develop our own ways of benefiting from the technology that cater to our environment and culture? Can we still see the form of architecture in the traditional way or should we change our perspectives? In other words the conference concentrates on bridging between the new digital form and the traditional human content.

title Representing Reflective Practice in a Remote Design Collaboration Process
source Digital proceedings of the 3rd Conference of International Association of Societies of Design Research (IASDR 2009), COEX, Seoul, Korea, pp. 1317 – 1326.
summary This paper addresses a new method to describe the remote collaborative design process from the perspective of reflective practice. We aim at understanding the mutual effect between internal and external structures in remote collaborative design. According to the cognitive coding scheme of Suwa et al., we encoded the process into a set of indices—new, continual and revisited—that describe each primitive design move. In a case study which involved the authors as design collaborators, we identified the degree of dependency among these moves and developed a 3D graphical representation to account for reflective practice between us as collaborators. In this representation, we re-interpreted our collaborative process through three main axes: axis of idea exchange as lateral component, axis of idea development as vertical component, and axis of dependency as depth component. We believe this representation can be used to re-interpret the collaboration process among geographically dispersed design team members.

summary What sort of interfaces will allow, in the future, to manage the evolution of information and knowledge generation? What new scenarios would emerge in contemporary architecture when the access to a multidimensional architectural database is open and it is written and visited by anyone, anywhere in earth? Internet evolution is fast and unpredictable, propelling deep changes at different levels of our society. Spinoffs, unexpected outcomes are result of those changes, unfolding uncertain, unstable scenarios. This paper discusses the question of what could be the way to organize the process of registering, documenting and online publishing, native digital, three-dimensional content of Architecture, assuming the critical issue of information integration.
