summary The paper summarizes the results of a diploma thesis. Taking the potential of computers to be an ultimate design-medium as its premise, the thesis examines how to enhance the way we use digital design tools. It identifies central characteristics of the design process that need to be considered in a digital design environment. Based on a conception of design as a cyclic process involving appropriate design tools, the paper singles out usability, in the sense of ease of use of such tools, as a key criteria for overcoming problems associated with designing on and with the computer. Drawing on these considerations a prototype has been developed which attempts to bridge barriers between the use of different design tools using an existing software framework.

summary The connection between biological systems and machines is quickly becoming an important factor in designing the built environment. This paper explores the model of abstraction languages as a method to create communications between biological and mechanical systems, focusing on modes accessible to design professionals. The development of data and control abstraction in programming is explored in order to develop linkages between physical systems and digital interfaces. This examination looks at current methods of data conveyance for the built environment, and at pushing beyond these current methods to suggest a method of abstraction. The researchers are particularly interested in the ability of abstraction to compress ecological/biological complexity into accessible modules for responsive environments.

The integration of multiple disciplines is crucial for facing the next wave of global challenges. l Digital Design is intuitive. With advanced computational technology, how humans will cooperate with machines after the computing era will surely become the next challenge for all computational design-related researchers. Intuitive interaction or computing design is the second theme addressed in CAADRIA 2009. l Digital Design is Intelligent. With artificial intelligence, design intelligence is the third theme we would like to address this year. summary With the recent developments in information and communication technologies, designers have adapted digital tools and new ways of designing into their practice. In order to develop efficient systems for designing, the adaptation of new tools and techniques in design practice requires a better understanding of how designers employ the digital medium and what impact the digital medium have on designers’ cognition. The latter one is the subject of this paper. The paper presents the methodology and the initial results of a pilot to investigate the impact of immersion on design cognition. The initial result of the pilot study indicates that the designers were able to adapt to each design environment which affords different kinds of activities and requires different cognitive load.

summary CAAD is constantly provoking and raising many potentials, challenges and arguments in academia, practice, and even in the theory of architecture itself. This process starts with the pedagogy of designing and the ongoing questions such as how much of CAAD should be incorporated in teaching, and ends with digital design technologies and the new emerging questions such as how biologically inspired computational processes alter the form of our architecture and the typical design process. Architecture originates from peoples’ needs and beliefs. The new forms of digital architecture generate debates in terms of various important issues, ranging from emotional and social factors to sustainability and warming climate. The focus area of the conference can be shaped, as follows: considering all these potentials, challenges, and arguments, which we have to benefit from and cope with, are there truly legitimate concerns about the future of our architecture and its content in particular from human and environmental dimensions? Can we develop our own ways of benefiting from the technology that cater to our environment and culture? Can we still see the form of architecture in the traditional way or should we change our perspectives? In other words the conference concentrates on bridging between the new digital form and the traditional human content.

summary This paper argues that familiarity is the tool that enables the understanding of space abstraction and representation. Familiarity in this context is independent from embodied interaction, and is crudely based on the connection between the various similar images of space; in this particular case, virtual space. Our investigation into the nature of human interaction with space, its abstraction and its representation is based on the critical contrast between the outcomes of interaction with two virtual versions of a physical reality; the first version is a non-linear interactive graphical abstraction of the space where no assertions or indicators are given as to whether or not there is a relationship between the abstraction and its physical reality, whereas the second is a none-linear interactive 3D virtual environment clearly representing the physical space in question. The paper utilises qualitative methods of investigation in order to gain an insight into human embodied experience in space, its abstraction and representation.

It is expected to play an important role in urban planning, disaster simulation etc. Recent advanced remote sensing technologies, which are capable to quickly provide detailed information of city areas, ease the construction of 3D city models. Urbanization has evinced interest from a wide section of the society including experts, amateurs and novices. With the development and infrastructure initiatives mostly around the urban centers, the impacts of urbanization and sprawl would be on the environment and the natural resources. The research introduces an application of 3D GIS on Manama City.

summary This paper addresses the importance and development of cultural transformations involving the design process in architecture and the advent of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in civil construction activities and how its implementation in a coordinated, collaborative and interoperable way contributes to a diagnosis of Clash Detection between diferentes design projects, before building construction, saving excessive costs and rework. Taking as its main reference the BIM Maturity Matrix of Succar (2009), the proposed BIM Project Integration Maturity Matrix contributes to the awareness of bringing designers and builders closer to design activities, to encourage the integration of design processes involving the building, to consolidate an environment of ease of communication between participants, the organization of documentation and, above all, prioritize the compatibility between projects to avoid conflicts, excess costs and rework, resulting in a higher quality of the final project.

The project allows various interactions between the user and the environment developed. The main interaction is the choice of clothing, in which different parts can be proven in the virtual model. The results can be applied to online sales, marketing strategies and 3D virtual simulation.

In addition to a discourse on the design and implementation parameters that were used, the paper seeks to provide findings that make reference to the quality of teaching/learning experience of users and the effectiveness of the interaction among users while working on a common architectural design project. This experience will further contribute to the knowledge base that will be needed in the design of virtual architecture.

summary This article presents an application of Augmented Reality technology for interior design. Plus, an Educational Interior Design Project is reviewed. Along with the dramatic progress of digital technology, virtual information techniques are also required for architectural projects. Thus, the new technology of Augmented Reality offers many advantages for digital design and construction fields. AR is also being considered as a new design approach for interior design. In an AR environment, virtual furniture can be displayed and modified in real-time on the screen, allowing the user to have an interactive experience with the virtual furniture in a real-world environment. Finally, this study proposes a new method for applying AR technology to interior design work, where a user can view virtual furniture and communicate with 3D virtual furniture data using a dynamic and flexible user interface. Plus, all the properties of the virtual furniture can be adjusted using occlusion based interaction methods for a Tangible Augmented Reality.

summary In Norway there has been an increased focus on participatory planning the latter years. The public is now supposed to be included in the planning process. The documents which the public have access to usually consists of the project`s technical drawings. In some cases, the documents include perspective drawing or computer rendering supplied by the stakeholder. Most affected parties are non professional in terms of planning, and have little or no experience dealing with the plans. Therefore, the information they rely on most cases is the perspective images, which easily can be manipulated. A system that enables all parties engaged in the planning process to visualize planning scenarios in a much realistic way is therefore needed. Virtual Reality is a tool that enables the viewer to move freely in a three dimensional digital environment. In this virtual world, different levels of interactivity can be added. The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) has recently installed a new immersive Virtual Reality system based on the idea of ConCave theatre. This research study is making use of the new ConCave theatre in order to test whether VR can be used as an enhancement of the communication process between professionals and amateurs and between professionals. By presenting digital models of different level of detail to two subject groups consisting of students with planning background and two groups without such experience we first investigated perception in an immersive VR-environment.

summary This research aims at stimulating the exploration process in architectural design through the conception and the creation of a computational environment centered on a library of referents. Based on a specific way of describing the referents, as well as on the energizing role we wanted the library to play in the design process, we could draw the characteristics of such an environment. The representation of the referents is seen as a combination of descriptions in different format. Offered to students, it allows for new interpretations, for interaction with their content, and finally, for the integration of knowledge during the process of architectural exploration.

summary In the past, culture expressed through built environment has been confined to results generated by a single author or small team, but has rarely been considered in light of data produced by a society with various sociological backgrounds. The state of a society can, however, be represented by social data used as a transmitter of cultural identity. Voxel facades use data as a generator for defining space. This paper defines: voxel facades; explains how data are fed into the voxel facade, proposes ways in which data can be represented meaningfully; it evaluates the cultural design intervention and investigates results.

title Virtual Organism: Generative Tool Based on Multi-Agent System

summary A multi-agent system (MAS) is efficient as it can emulate a variety of organisms in natural science due to the interactions between agents, which make artificial systems responsive and adaptive. In “Bamboo Workshop” involved flexible structures, MAS was employed to create virtual organism in computational environment towards an innovative process in installation design. A generative tool with friendly user interface was developed for both observation and intervention besides debugging. At the same time investigations were carried on the complex behaviours of the system through graphic statistics. Integrated with the generative tool, a construction system made up of bamboo materials was set up to build a series of mobile and flexible installations. This experiment suggests that the virtual organism has the potential for being a part of the design intelligence, beyond a mere digital tool.

summary This paper presents an image-driven method to rapidly generate 3D digital urban models for presentation in a real-time Virtual Reality (VR) environment. Several computational tools and methods are developed in order to give the end user the ability to transform a single 2D image into a realistically textured and rendered a 3D urban model. Using this method, city models based on SmartCode, a template for planning and urban design, are generated and presented in a VR visualization tool. The methods to generate VR city models including inputs, process, output, and pipeline are explained. One generated 3D city model is demonstrated in the results section.

The TIDIA-Ae virtual environment is a product of the Program on Information Technology in Development of Advanced Internet sponsored by the Foundation for the Support of Research of the State of São Paulo - FAPESP. A design exercise was developed enforcing the inclusion of guidelines for community integration and security, implementation, street system and parking, public, private and open space, and landscaping considering quality of life and sustainability for low income housing projects.

summary This research presents the results of experiments of techniques on heritage preservation using lighting computation in virtual environment. In this research, three traditional houses built in the early 1900s were re-constructed based on the captured data that included texturing and lighting. A thorough study on the lighting solution and its impact to the design aspects of photorealism and issues discovered in processing the digital data will be emphasized. This includes complexity of the modeling, rendering and reality, and real-time lighting techniques. This research will suggest effective lighting techniques for re-construction of heritage preservation in virtual environment for architectural purposes.

summary This paper discusses embodied interaction followed by a survey of examples in installation art and research projects that attempt to fuse physical space and digital technology. From studying the examples, we propose a categorization of types for a better understanding of interactive spaces. Design attributes are also identified from the examples. We hope this will be useful to designers in designing engaging interactive spaces.

title Do Analógico ao Digital? [From analog to digital?]

summary After admitting that the immersion of Architecture in digital environment happened in the last decade of the XX Century, this paper argues about the (im)possible links established between analogical and digital worlds. Discarding the possibility of a “transition” between them, the paper points the existence of a “jump” that, more than to tie, unlinks them leaving an emptiness that has to be analyzed. Coexisting in this emptiness we find hybrid structures of pragmatic approach, ruptures of paradigms and sprouting of new forms to project and to make architecture. Clarify this panorama is a basic task we need to do before facing the future, not only in a professional way, but also in the field of architectural education, because we have to know which architecture we desire to transmit.
