summary A review of national government literature indicates that today’s knowledge-driven economy demands a workforce equipped with complex skills and attitudes. Examples of these skills and attitudes are general problems solving, meta-cognitive skills, critical thinking and lifelong learning. Reviews of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry indicates a gap between architecture practice and education. The Egan report states that there is a need for a change of style, culture and process within the construction industry and it identified five driving forces, the report also recognised that the achievement of these driving forces is linked to training and education. Education must not only teach the necessary technical skills and knowledge, but also the culture of teamwork, collaborative work and creativity. The construction boom in the United Arab Emirates combined with the country’s mission to highly educate and train its nationals to be able to tackle market challenges provoked the necessity of implementing the culture of creativity and collaboration in education system. On the other hand, use of technology in education has been proven to facilitate and enhance the learning process. This paper will highlight the importance of implementing the virtual design studio as a technlogical platform in architecture education in the UAE in a way that aims to promote the culture of creativity and collaboration through the use of technology.

summary For sustainable building design, computational tools, mostly in the form of simulations, are employed to determine loads and to predict systems performance typically in terms of energy use. Currently, sustainability, in the building domain, is judged by a rating system. Design choices are validated, by measuring against one. The objective of the framework is to provide a general approach to processing the informational needs of any rating system, by identifying, categorizing and organizing relevant data requirements. Aspects of sustainability that designers deal with intuitively will have a structured guideline and gauge as one selects a rating system of choice.

summary This paper reports an investigation of the establishment and performance of a distributed computer rendering system for advanced computer graphics production within a centralized university information technology environment. It explores the proposal that the use of distributed computer rendering systems in industry and universities offers synergies for university-industry collaborative agreements. Claims that cluster computing and rendering systems are of benefit for computer graphics productions are to be tested within a standard higher education environment. A small scale distributed computer rendering system was set up to investigate the development of the optimum use of intranet and internet systems for computer generated feature film production and architectural visualisation. The work entailed using monitoring, comparative performance analysis and interviews with relevant stakeholders. The research provides important information for practitioners and the general public and heralds the initiation of a Centre for Visualization and Animation research within the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, University of Adelaide.

summary In this paper, the dominant definitions of intelligence are explored in order to establish a set of working principals towards the development of higher order computational design processes in architecture. A review of intelligence as it has been understood over the last 60 years since Alan Turing (1950) first asked the question “can machines think?” shows the question of intelligence is far from clearly understood. Principals of intelligence however can be identified within the neurophysiological and artificial intelligence (AI) communities that differ significantly from the notion of intelligence as it is commonly used in architecture typically relating to the phenomena of emergence and critical point material physics. While distinct, these definitions provide a foundation for understanding intelligence specifically in computational architecture at a moment when it is necessary to develop a foundational taxonomy of systems thinking and processes. Through critiquing the principals of intelligence as it is understood in these different discipline areas, the thesis of this paper is that it is possible to frame a productive general theory of intelligent systems applicable to design processes, while simultaneously distinguishing the goals of design oriented higher order computational systems from those goals of general Artificial Intelligence research.

summary Process/product complexity is at present an unavoidable component of present building design approach that affects building product’s quality. To overcome this problem, effective collaboration is required among all the actors involved in the design process. Data and information exchange is not sufficient to guarantee mutual understanding; to support effective collaboration among actors; it is required a proper knowledge formalization and management. This paper reports on an innovative structure for knowledge modeling in cross-disciplinary building design, that has been formalized in a general template. The proposed Knowledge Model has been, at present, implemented by means of available ontology editors and is going to be used into teaching courses to check its efficiency in collaborative building design classes.

title Building design as individual compromise between qualities and costs: A general approach for automated building generation under permanent cost and quality control

summary We introduce an evolutionary design approach for the automatic arrangement of a predefined space program on a given site. The design goal is to distribute floor spaces while ensuring the essential building performance and usage. The presented evolutionary strategy is applied to acquire optimal design solutions considering both environmental conditions and inner organization under diversified fitness functions. The evaluation process consists of the direct analysis of the spatial network and the physical factors in an adequate accuracy. The method provides a fast generation of qualified volumetric studies. The resulting buildings become a manifested compromise between qualities and cost.

summary This paper explores the incentive, design process, and realization of an adaptable building system. Hoberman Associates’ installation at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, Adaptive Fritting, is used as a case study for the more general thesis of mechanism design in architecture. Traditionally seen as expensive and impractical, ‘movement’ in buildings can be accessible if done with high economy and simple elegance. The goal of this example is to illustrate the design process, challenges, constraints and parameters required to realize an adaptable architectural system.

title Evaluating the use of 3D virtual worlds in collaborative design learning

summary 3D virtual worlds for collaborative design learning have been widely recognized and practised, nevertheless there is a general lack of formal evaluation with empirical evidence for the performance of virtual worlds, and their roles in developing students’ teamwork skills. In bridging these gaps, this paper provides a critical discussion of the effectiveness of virtual worlds for collaborative design learning, supported by a comprehensive analysis on the results of an inclusive questionnaire completed by architectural students. The paper provides insight into the application of virtual worlds in both technical and procedural experiences, and discusses the benefits and shortcomings of virtual worlds on design education.

summary There is an increasing awareness of formal ontologies in knowledge-intense problem domains in the AEC industry. This paper analyzes the general use of ontologies, points to the importance of context-dependent ontology descriptions in AEC, and describes the use and management of multiple (external) ontologies as knowledge management tools within a complex information model of a building performance assessment tool CLIP (Computational support for Lifecycle Integral Performance assessment), previously developed by the authors. The paper provides a discussion of our approach, analysis of the benefits and limitations of external ontologies, suggestions for further development and research areas for the integration of multiple AEC knowledge representations.

summary The working team is comprised of professionals and students from Engineering and Architecture degree courses. This group, participating at a certified research by Secretaría de Ciencia y Técnica de la Nación, have agreed to carry out a joint designing experience about a micro-architecture prototype to be domotized by the Chair of Automation of Mechanical Engineering.We have designed a display equipment for local bookstores. The equipment in itself is ductile and useful to build a stand. It can be easily coupled and divided into modules for shop windows and different spaces within stores. It is changeable, flexible, and its arrangement is dynamic. The design contemplates general sample functions according to the various sizes of the product, which range from small to large-scale objects.The equipment offers its own domotic features.

title How do media influence one’s thinking? The “habit media” in design thinking

summary This paper presents a preliminary observation of the digital media as “habit media” in designing act. The digital media has become a costumed vehicle for designers for a long time. The author investigated the supports of different media for how a specific media conditioned the design thinking and the reasons behind the behaviors of choice-use of designers’ choice. The results showed that designers using “habit media” could do most part of things they wanted to do; when the media are “habit media”, its inherent restrictions do not limit user’s accomplishment. Once a digital medium is habitually practiced, it can support the functions and characteristics that this medium does not ever possess.

title Sound fields; experiencing the unrepresentable

summary This paper explores the intangible aspects of space through a series of soundmappings that took place in Edinburgh and Athens between 2006-08. One of our main conclusions is that sound is a rich and provocative tool for exploring space, due to the fact that it reveals qualities and information that a visual representation wouldn’t had been able to. A significant remark we made is that the exploration of space through sound does not predetermine the findings; we did not pose questions about pre-decided aspects of the places under investigation. On the contrary, within each different environment, the study of sound brought out different kinds of information. We also realized, that the experience of sound of a place lies in the tension between our attempt to grasp, and possibly map it, and the fact that sound – and atmosphere in general – naturally resists these endeavours.

summary Recently we developed a prototype general shape grammar system, called Grammar Environment (Li et al. 2009). It differs from other systems in that it aims to support designers who design with shape grammars. One task of such a system is to support users in editing shapes. The guidelines that we followed in developing Grammar Environment suggested that the shape editing system should both be integrated into the system and be powerful as a drawing tool. This seemed to be contradictory. We decided to make two shape editors: one stronger on integration, the other on drawing power.

summary It is obvious that the preparation and compliance with cost estimates for a proposed architectural design is indispensable for successful realization of building projects. A variety of methods exists that can be used by the architect to achieve this objective. However, most of these methods are regularly not used until the design is completed. In many cases this procedure leads to cost overruns. Hence, our paradigm is to estimate the total building costs prior to the generation of detailed designs and thus use the costs of building elements as design parameters right from the beginning to produce design solutions which entail the least possible costs. For this purpose we invert the customary process through the use of building element costs as a means for the automatic generation of monetarily assessable design solutions. For various reasons we concentrate on the design of housing projects. The methodology however, can be adopted to any other kind of building typology.

The objective is for exploratory study and analysis method of using computer game engine that have several features for architecture design process, relate to real-time collaborative virtual environment could derive from multi-player aspects for designer team, and easily level of representation and basis for perception of owner or general user. In addition, the Cryengine2 have easily using and development for designer who is non programmer, and present realistic virtual worlds featuring user friendly interaction. Finally, this paper attempts to explore and suggests novel tools developed within to implement architectural design communication.

summary Using several NBBJ civic projects as case studies, this paper provides an overview of how NBBJ’s Los Angeles design studio is leveraging parametric and generative processes for the design of projects such as stadiums and exposition halls. A combination of ambitious intent and fast project schedules necessitates the use of advanced parametric tools to quickly solve complex problems, generate unique features, and automate parts of the design process. Designers will utilize digital tools for a variety of purposes, which can be classified under two general categories. The first and most common application of the technology is within the category of rationalization and optimization. The tool, in this case, is limited to the role of a production device that aids the designer in efficiently solving complex design problems. In more unique projects, the advanced technology acts as a generative tool and is an integral part of a working design methodology. In this case, the design technology becomes more than just a tool at the designer’s disposal. Rather, it has the potential to act as a critical lens for identifying new possibilities in the architecture.

summary This study investigates how the use of digital technology in general, and electronic information and automation, especially during the course of study and preparation of urban and architectural designs on the one hand, and analysis of the impact of these applications and uses of the media automation and information technology at various stages of Physical planning and architectural design of projects, on the other hand. The comparison between modern and traditional methods, to determine the positives and negatives of both sides on the economic (economy, effort, money and time) and technical, which includes (graphic representation: painting, measure, Quality, precision, colours, details and other ....). The answer to whether computer and digital development has invented, added, or nothing of substance to content of architecture and urban planning designs, or has enabled us to solve the urban and architectural problems related to social and cultural aspects. We have in this study, the city of _Boussa_da_ in the south of Algeria as an example, through which presentation and analysis of two types of field projects carried in our architectural office using; media techniques and various programs: (Architectural3.3/Accurender/Art-lantis...) mentioning That, the two projects have been completed and approved, and are now in the process of realisation. The first project represents a residential neighbourhood area of (82.65 ha), through the action plan and land uses called _Plan d_occupation des sols_ in Algeria, No.09, in order to create and prepare the new town for extension, establish administrative and commercial centre, and determine the nature of land use; (equipment, facilities and housing),for a population number estimated (12,264)inhabitants, and projected number of housing estimated at 2409 houses, with a density of 150 inhabitants / ha. The second project is to study the architecture of the 50 houses earmarked for social Tzhmia working group, formed 25 three-room apartment type with(67.00 m 2) and 25 four-room apartment type with(77.00m2). However, The study aims to identify the impact of automated information applications and information technology used at different stages of urban planning and architectural design of these projects under consideration by the comparison between the traditional design table, and electronic design table to determine the pros and cons of each one of these means on the one hand, and stages of concepts and design, On the other, before concluding to how to use the media automation and digital technology, trying to find a point of hugs between the means and tools of Planning and design, through the analysis of the historical path of each of these elements.
