summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. Iteratively examining how computer operations generate carved results provides a craftsman’s understanding of tools and materials.

summary In sustainable urban development the first stage of the urban design process should consist of a pre-design phase where the context of the site is analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. In this paper we present a methodology for data mining an urban Geographic Information System (GIS) data set, consisting of three main phases: representation, analysis and description. The process reveals a series of block and street typologies at various levels of detail that highlight the different character of two neighbourhoods. This methodology is demanding in the preparation phase and requires a high level of GIS and statistics expertise in the analysis phase. However, it successfully addresses the complex multi-scale and multi-level nature of cities in a systematic way, providing a tool for systematic profiling of neighbourhoods, which is site and problem specific.

title Reciprocal relationship of conceptualization and design problem definition: A proposed approach for an architectural design studio

summary This research paper proposes an approach to be applied in the design studio. The proposed approach highlights the reciprocal relationship between concept articulation and design problem definition in a design method that exposes different design activities related to this relationship. The design method was applied in a design studio of an intermediate level. The study reports the analysis of student designs in terms of the deign method employed. Moreover, a survey was carried out in order to measure the responses of students and instructors regarding the design method and its approach. The main structure of the design method proposed can be described as follows: although the relationship of concept articulation and design-problem definition are reciprocal, the influence of one direction can be distinguished more than of the other direction on different design activities. The research using qualitative and quantitative methodologies analyzes the results and outputs of the theoretical investigations, the practical application in the design studio, and the questionnaire responses through different methodological tools.

summary The Cooperative Design Environment Laboratory (CoDE Lab) is carrying out a research with students, trainees and seniors who have previously participated to CAAD-assisted design courses. These courses were developed with the aim of making participants independent from the pre-analytical phase project to the renderings of the final artifact. The programs that have been used so far are Autodesk Revit, Graphisoft Archicad and Nemetschek Allplan.The teaching workgroup has always believed that analyzing, deconstructing and reconstructing the architecture teaches much in terms of understanding. If the process is done correctly, it entirely re-traces the creative dynamics developed by the original designer. Subsequently, the educational practice is to choose a notable architectural work, designed and/or created by a Master of architecture, and to reproduce it in all details: aesthetical-formal, morphological, technological, structural, modular, etc. The final result is an archive of well-developed reconstructed models of great specific interest. The students on the other hand thoroughly learn how to control the tools and all BIM planning procedures.

summary This article seeks an adequate manner to stand for a generative process in architecture. The processes of typology development in a vernacular architecture is adopted. As a proper cultural object, a type is perceived as a general principle of creation, a supra-individual mechanism. In that context, there are some issues concerning the research problem: how to adequately represent a poiesis? The related theories to support this research development are distinct. However, the theoretical framework point out shape grammar as a base for generative process representation in architecture. A generative system that operates with the same generative logic is proposed.

summary One of the research ways carried out in the ARIAM-LAREA laboratory aims at giving to architects computing tools for early evaluation of structures. A particular approach uses dimensional analysis and similitude properties in order to define parameter variation laws. Such laws are illustrated by analytical cases using the theory of strength of materials. For complex structures, a heuristic is proposed to give indications of parameter variation influence on mechanical behavior. Some applications are presented for early determination of structural size and limit values, using computations by finite element method.

summary Our research revolves around developing applications of augmented reality technologies to support changing temporal contexts in architectural design. In order to ground this research in contemporary professional culture, we first undertook a structured data gathering exercise, analysis of which will inform development of new AR technologies and tools to support temporal visualisation of architectural designs. This paper reports on the first phase of this project in which we undertook extended conversations and documentation of 22 design offices that represent practices of varying sizes and competencies. The intention of this data collection exercise was to map out spectrum of design issues and representations that specifically revolve around changing temporal or spatial contexts in design. This paper reports collection and preliminary analysis of data intended for developing specifications of future AR applications.

summary Shape grammars have been used in architecture for analysis and synthesis - in the first case, mainly for the characterization of styles and in the later for the generation of novel compositions. The present research proposes the use of shape grammars for establishing guidelines for the requalification of historical areas that have lost their original characteristics due to improper renovations. In order to develop and test the proposed method, a study was carried out in a small Brazilian town called Monte Alegre do Sul. The town was chosen because its original urban morphology, developed in the XIXth century, is still relatively well preserved, although part of the original façades have been transformed. The objective of the research is to develop a shape grammar to set guidelines for the requalification of the already renovated façades in Monte Alegre do Sul.

summary The materialization of architectural forms uses new processes aided by digital manufacturing techniques (FD). Five FD techniques stand out: sectioning (serial planes), tessellation, folding, contouring, and forming. This article's objective is to characterize the state of the art of these techniques, from 2009 to 2020 in national and international research bases. The Systematic Literature Review is used from three stages and nine protocol phases. The results indicate the techniques, methods, computer simulations, and applicability in more recurrent materials.

summary Architectural design is a purpose-oriented collective process defined in time, split up into phases, carried out directly or indirectly by numerous professional profiles and characterized by the co-presence of numerous disciplines and specialist skills. The efficiency of a shared design among multiple designers depends on how much the actor’s semantics of the used terms are interpreted correctly by all the other actors involved in the design process without misunderstandings. The chosen way to find an answer to these questions is the development of a Collaborative Architectural Design system based on Knowledge formalized by Ontologies. An ontology has been implemented using three different approaches to define an entity based on Lisp, Protégé and Altova.

summary Nowadays, the architectural profession is seeking a better energy saving in the design of buildings. The fear of energy shortage in the very near future, together with the rapid rise in energy prices, put pressure on researchers on this field to develop buildings with more efficient heating systems and energy systems. This work is concerned mainly with the development of a software program analyzing comfort in buildings integrated in CAD architectural systems. The problem of presenting the computer with information concerning the building itself has been overcome through integration of thermal analysis with the building capabilities of CAD system. Mainly, such experience concerns the rules for calculating heat loss and heat gain of buildings in Algeria, The program has been developed in order to demonstrate the importance of the innovation of the computer aided-architectural-design field (CAAD) in the technology of buildings such as the three dimensional modeling offering environmental thermal analysis. CAAD is an integrated architectural design system which can be used to carry out many tasks such as working drawings, perspectives and thermal studies, etc., all from the same data. Results are obtained in tabular form or in graphical output on the visual display. The principle of this program is that all input data should be readily available to the designer at the early stages of the design before the user starts to run the integrated model. Particular attention is given to the analysis of thermal aspects including solar radiation gains. Average monthly energy requirement predictions have been estimated depending on the building design aspect. So, this integrated model (CAAD and simulation comfort) is supposed to help architects to decide on the best options for improving the design of buildings. Some of these options may be included at the early design stages analysis. Indications may also be given on how to improve the design. The model stored on CAAD system provides a valuable data base for all sort analytical programs to be integrated into the system. The amount of time and expertise required to use complex analytical methods in architectural practice can be successfully overcome by integration with CAAD system.

summary The paper highlights a built example of a human-scale spatial environment composed of discrete collaborative modules. The primary goals were to develop and understand strategies that can be applied to interactive architecture. The design and construction were carried out in an academic context that was displayed to a public audience of approximately 200,000 people over the course of three days. In addressing the performance parameters of the prototype, the concept focused on several key strategies: 1) geometry 2) movement 3) connections 4) scale and 5) computational control, and human interaction. The final objective of the approach was to create an innovative design that was a minimally functional spatial environment with the capability for evolving additional multi-functionality. Heavy emphasis was placed on creating a full-scale environment that a person could walk through, interact with, and experience spatially.

summary The working team is comprised of professionals and students from Engineering and Architecture degree courses. This group, participating at a certified research by Secretaría de Ciencia y Técnica de la Nación, have agreed to carry out a joint designing experience about a micro-architecture prototype to be domotized by the Chair of Automation of Mechanical Engineering.We have designed a display equipment for local bookstores. The equipment in itself is ductile and useful to build a stand. It can be easily coupled and divided into modules for shop windows and different spaces within stores. It is changeable, flexible, and its arrangement is dynamic. The design contemplates general sample functions according to the various sizes of the product, which range from small to large-scale objects.The equipment offers its own domotic features.

title Conceptual Model for Design Team toward Website Construction

summary Since mid 1990s internet has been developing rapidly to become the most booming and emerging media in late history and play an important role in living. Therefore, how to design an interface of easy to use has become an important issue pertaining to Human Computer Interaction. Norman (1986) proposed in the human computer interaction, there is a design model in the mind of designer. In turn, the designer will follow design model and to design a set of system image that is functional, learnable, and usable. Therefore, we want to understand the critical factor of influencing toward website construction, we should find out the mental model that web design team at first. In this paper, we using the Interactive Qualitative Analysis (IQA) approach. The data collection method of the participant of the focus group’s silent brainstorming is adopted. Further analyze web design team’s the conceptual model on website construction through inductive coding and axial coding. The result shows the affinities of 9 web design team is thus produced. And, Business Decision, Team Performance, Self-Fulfillment and Entrepreneur Communication are main influence factor. These factors can lead trend and goal of a website.

summary Sounds, along with other senses, have a profound influence on our perception of the environment. The multi-modality of perceptual processing is influential in cognitive interpretation, semantic and aesthetic evaluations of environmental scenes. This paper describes an experimental case study using audio-augmented reality, carried out in order to better understand how sound influences sense of place. A correlation is established between soundscape and sense of place that depends on audio-visual congruence based on cultural, aesthetic and semantic factors. Subjective influences of soundscape on place experience are grouped and discussed under 5 areas that were possible to identify: Emotive and synaesthetic effects; effects on attention, gaze and behavior; effects on spatial orientation and sense of scale; influence of audio-visual congruence on sense of place; and perception of personal and social space.
