title Un « collaboratoire » comme nouveau contexte pour la transformation des pratiques via la technologie; A "collaboratory" as a new context for transforming practices through technology
source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages, Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009, PUM, 2009, pp. 37-50
summary Building design is today a major social, economic and environmental challenge. Design is also a source of innovation and an important economic driving force that requires the collaboration of professionals from various fields of expertise. But the traditional linear approach in design has shown its limits, and it often leads to non optimal design solutions and buildings with inadequate performances. This paper aims to validate a computer supported collaborative workspace that facilitates the participation, in an integrated approach, of the various members of a construction project team. The goal of the research is to be part of the evolution of work practices in design.

title A Multi-dimensional Exploration of Urban Attributes by Data Mining
source Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures 2011 [Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Futures / ISBN 9782874561429] Liege (Belgium) 4-8 July 2011, pp. 333-350.
summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. title The impact of information technology on architectural design in the 21st century
source T. Tidafi and T. Dorta (eds) Joining Languages, Cultures and Visions: CAADFutures 2009, PUM, 2009, pp. 21-34
summary Architecture uses technology to achieve certain functional, cultural, social, economic, and other goals. In turn, technology transforms the discipline. Information technologies promise to change design processes, practices, and products. The first uses of computing in the service of architecture have been rather timid, mimicking older practices. This is changing rapidly: new design and evaluation tools allow architects to imagine new building forms, more responsive (and environmentally more responsible) buildings, even radically new types of environments that blend physical with virtual space. Understanding and shaping this transformation are the basis of architectural design research and education in the 21st century.

summary The creation of panoramic images for depicting urban landscape is a technique that has its origins in Antiquity. These images, which are known to represent large urban areas from multiple views, can be considered true works of art. Recently there has been a growing interest by some researchers, especially in the area of computer graphics, in the production of multi-perspective images for representing historic sites. However, the focus of these studies has been especially the computational aspects of this process, and there are few studies that address the impact and possibilities of these methodologies in historic preservation and urban planning. Realizing this shortcoming and considering the demand for a perspective more connected to cultural heritage, our proposal is to associate the excellent visual results of the multi-perspective images to the rich possibilities of computer simulation that can provide digital photography. The fact is that in recent years we have experienced technological innovations in the field of computer simulation that far exceeded our expectations. While most surveys of buildings are still based on the use of tape measure, pencil, paper and camera, the computer has become increasingly the main interface between the user and the information and is now the preferred instrument for the production and viewing of images, including the creation of virtual environments. Thus, this work seeks to explore the great potential which seems to exist in the combination of digital photography and the technique of multi-perspective image representation, which may provide new approaches and perspectives for the field of historic preservation. For that, we present a rapid and low cost methodology, developed in recent years, which generates orthophotos and metric multi-perspective images, useful for the analysis of built heritage and historic sites. In addition to that, we will also discuss further possible byproducts of this methodology, among which we could highlight the creation of three-dimensional models, and the analysis of building pathologies in combination with thermal photography. As a case study, we will present a representation of the Rua dos Caetés, a listed historic district in Belo Horizonte (MG), Brazil.

title Thermal Simulation In Residential Building Within Computer Aided Architectural Design: Integrated model
source Digitizing Architecture: Formalization and Content [4th International Conference Proceedings of the Arab Society for Computer Aided Architectural Design (ASCAAD 2009) / ISBN 978-99901-06-77-0], Manama (Kingdom of Bahrain), 11-12 May 2009, pp. 235-243
summary Nowadays, the architectural profession is seeking a better energy saving in the design of buildings. The fear of energy shortage in the very near future, together with the rapid rise in energy prices, put pressure on researchers on this field to develop buildings with more efficient heating systems and energy systems. This work is concerned mainly with the development of a software program analyzing comfort in buildings integrated in CAD architectural systems. The problem of presenting the computer with information concerning the building itself has been overcome through integration of thermal analysis with the building capabilities of CAD system. Mainly, such experience concerns the rules for calculating heat loss and heat gain of buildings in Algeria, The program has been developed in order to demonstrate the importance of the innovation of the computer aided-architectural-design field (CAAD) in the technology of buildings such as the three dimensional modeling offering environmental thermal analysis. CAAD is an integrated architectural design system which can be used to carry out many tasks such as working drawings, perspectives and thermal studies, etc., all from the same data. Results are obtained in tabular form or in graphical output on the visual display. The principle of this program is that all input data should be readily available to the designer at the early stages of the design before the user starts to run the integrated model. Particular attention is given to the analysis of thermal aspects including solar radiation gains. Average monthly energy requirement predictions have been estimated depending on the building design aspect. So, this integrated model (CAAD and simulation comfort) is supposed to help architects to decide on the best options for improving the design of buildings. Some of these options may be included at the early design stages analysis. Indications may also be given on how to improve the design. The model stored on CAAD system provides a valuable data base for all sort analytical programs to be integrated into the system. The amount of time and expertise required to use complex analytical methods in architectural practice can be successfully overcome by integration with CAAD system.

summary This lecture states the importance of urban memory within the construction of social identity and the recovery of urban spaces of Maracaibo’s historic center. The subject to be studied is Baralt Square among 19th and 21st centuries, users, activities and its buildings. Nowadays, it is an urban space invaded by informal commerce, citizens know very little of it. The little information is spread and it is getting lost. Different approaches toward a methodological-theoretical approximation for the Urban Memory construction of space are used in this research. The use of digital tools can evoke individual or collective memory.

title Monitoring urban design through generative design support tools: a generative grammar for Praia
source Proceedings of 15 Congresso da APDR, Cidade da Praia, Cabo Verde.
summary Abstract Urban planning and design has a considerable impact on the economic performance of cities and regions. It is a complex process that extends for a long period and involves many participants. The lack of integrated tools to support this process hampers the ability to maximize the response of plans to contextual conditions while using the least resources. This paper describes research that aims to develop such a tool, integrating formulation, generation, and evaluation capabilities. It is focused on the generation module which relies on the encoding of Urban Induction Patterns (UIP) using shape grammars. A grammar for the extension plan of the city of Praia is presented as one of the case studies used to support UIP definition and illustrate its application. The paper also discusses how the proposed tool can be used for developing and monitoring urban plans.

title Building Information Modeling in the Architectural Design Phases: And why Compulsory BIM can Provoke Distress among Architects
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2009.075
source Computation: The New Realm of Architectural Design [27th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-8-9] Istanbul (Turkey) 16-19 September 2009, pp. 75-82
summary The overall economical benefits of Building Information Modeling are generally comprehensible, but are there other problems with the implementation of BIM as a formulized system in a field that ultimately is dependent on a creative input? Is optimization and economic benefit really contributing with an architectural quality? In Denmark the implementation of the digital working methods related to BIM has been introduced by government law in 2007. Will the important role of the architect as designer change in accordance with these new methods, and does the idea of one big integrated model represent a paradox in relation to designing? The BIM mindset requires changes on many levels.

source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary Kirimurê is as Brazilian Indian Tupinambás called the Baia de Todos os Santos. Around the bay developed a region with significant agricultural production, at a time Salvador was the main export port in the Southern Hemisphere. This economic strength and its export potential were greatly due to the saveiro, a small wooden vessel with sail propulsion, which dominated these waters for a long time. Testimony of the Bahia’s history, they had great influence in the culture of Bahia. Currently, these vessels are disappearing and with them the traditional techniques of shipbuilding, intangible heritage, held in memory of the master builders. This paper presents an experience in developing the architectural shape of a complex building using geometric modeling, to house this cultural heritage.

title Study on Zoning of Urban Morphology based on GIS
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2009.317
source Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / Yunlin (Taiwan) 22-25 April 2009, pp. 317-326
summary The traditional studies of urban morphology mainly focus on material aspects such as urban construction, urban environment. The writers of the paper, however, point out that the nature behind material aspects should be load capacity of urban land-use, which can be reflected through some economic and technological indexes, such as floor area ratio(FAR), building density and building height, and generally they are relative. The paper forms a new morphology zoning method after having studied the relation of the above indexes based on the digital methods of GIS. This rout of thought may have some reference value for controlling the expanse of urban land-use, optimizing the allocation of resources and urban morphology and supervising the implementation of urban planning. In the paper, the author proposed the concept of “zhubei” to describe and evaluate urban morphology. We can further analyze “zhubei” regards urban planning analysis and management, for example, the slope analysis, aspect analysis, view analysis, area and volume analysis etc. Therefore, we can describe current urban morphology and evaluate its rationality by relevant conclusions just like describing vegetation.

summary Capitalism does play a decisive role in the planning and generation of countless generic typologies in the urban landscape to a certain extent. This also includes the planning and generation of housing models. As a result of conventional planning that is based on ‘entrepreneurship subdivision’, only similar housing model for a specific income group is sometimes offered. In the long term, this kind of development occupies massive land, which is not suitable for sustainable growth and creates social segregation. This paper suggests an alternative approach of ‘associative design’. Parametric design software is utilized to generate the housing diversity. It aims to construct a population of housing units that together form a new neighborhood model based on the land specificity that emphasizes its economic and ecological factors.

summary CAAD is constantly provoking and raising many potentials, challenges and arguments in academia, practice, and even in the theory of architecture itself. This process starts with the pedagogy of designing and the ongoing questions such as how much of CAAD should be incorporated in teaching, and ends with digital design technologies and the new emerging questions such as how biologically inspired computational processes alter the form of our architecture and the typical design process. Architecture originates from peoples’ needs and beliefs. The new forms of digital architecture generate debates in terms of various important issues, ranging from emotional and social factors to sustainability and warming climate. The focus area of the conference can be shaped, as follows: considering all these potentials, challenges, and arguments, which we have to benefit from and cope with, are there truly legitimate concerns about the future of our architecture and its content in particular from human and environmental dimensions? Can we develop our own ways of benefiting from the technology that cater to our environment and culture? Can we still see the form of architecture in the traditional way or should we change our perspectives? In other words the conference concentrates on bridging between the new digital form and the traditional human content.

summary Digital designing takes place through processes of interaction between human designers and computers. As such, its location is the in-between, a shared realm of conversation where capabilities of both man and machine are amplified. CAADRIA 2009 addresses this conversation in terms of three perspectives that drive both research and practice in the computer-aided architectural design field: Digital design as integrating, intuitive and intelligent. CAADRIA 2009 aimed to provide a forum in which ideas pertaining to these notions can be explored, discussed and developed. l Digital design is integrative. With the diverse and fast speed of the global economy in the 21st century, the barrier between different disciplines is being overcome digitally. The integration of multiple disciplines is crucial for facing the next wave of global challenges. l Digital Design is intuitive. With advanced computational technology, how humans will cooperate with machines after the computing era will surely become the next challenge for all computational design-related researchers. Intuitive interaction or computing design is the second theme addressed in CAADRIA 2009. l Digital Design is Intelligent. With artificial intelligence, design intelligence is the third theme we would like to address this year. We wish to challenge global researchers to provide a smart and responsive environment for improving our lives and stimulating our economy in innovative ways.

summary Prototype manufacturing as an educational tool has been very successful at the college level in architecture and engineering design. This paper discusses an innovative inquiry-based learning approach rather than the problem-based learning models commonly utilized by other similar programs. For example, several research-funded technology projects (e.g., Cappelleri et al. 2007) look at involving students in problembased learning exercises (e.g., building robots); however, these exercises (while providing valuable experiences) have predetermined outcomes ingrained by the teachers, the project structure, and the components used to construct the devices. Therefore, inquisitive and creative problem solving is limited to the “kit-of-parts” in their approach to solving the problem. The inquiry-based CADCAM pedagogy model is more concerned with the process of solving a problem through the vehicle of prototyping than with the specificity of the design project itself. This approach has great potential. First, the need to solve the problem drives learning on multiple levels, integrating interdisciplinary ideas into the problem and solution. Second, the problem interlocks disciplines through inquiry knowledge building in team exercises. Finally, it encourages diversity and flexibility by allowing students to look at problems from multiples perspectives and points of view.

summary Geosemiotics, defined as the study of meaning of placing signs in the material world, concerns the interaction of spatial, individual, social, and cultural contexts. Mobile technology, enabling spatial awareness successfully, has turned our living space into coordinates to broaden geosemiotics study. With interdisciplinary perspectives, there is an emerging potential to integrate the study of mobile spatial interaction and geosemiotics and we address several open issues of geospatial applications in this paper. Since indexicality is the focus of geosemiotics study, we focus on digital indexicalities referring to physical space. Physical indexical signs are usually set by government or organizations rather than individuals, and therefore we propose a new concept to place personal indexical signs in the physical space with mobile devices and augmented reality technology. Overlapped onto the physical world via visual, iconic, and metaphorical methods, what these unique personal semiotics bring is a living space with novel urban landscape and geosemiotics.

summary In his book “Cinema as an Art”, Rudolf Arnheim states that cinema (art) cannot achieve to realize the mechanical reproduction of the real (nature) because of technical limitations but also states that these limitations are compulsory for the production of art. According to Arnheim, these limitations cause artists to interpret the real (nature) and to materialize impressive expressions. Architecture presents its productions to its viewers (customers) using some kind of media, before materializing them in the physical world. The most common ones nowadays are technical drawings (perspectives), models, photographs and computer aided models and animations. The architect makes impressive expressions based on the technical limitations of the medium he/she uses. With the computer technology, simulation gives possibilities to the architect for presenting and experiencing his/her art very close to reality. Simulation is the best way to reproduce the reality mechanically, when it is compared to other mediums. In this study, simulation’s potential as an architectural presentation technique is examined through Arnheim’s vision and Rembrandt’s painting “Staalmeesters”.

title Effect on Architectural Representation through Dynamic and Static Design Methods
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2009.497
source Computation: The New Realm of Architectural Design [27th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-8-9] Istanbul (Turkey) 16-19 September 2009, pp. 497-504
summary For accelerating the birth of architectures, people apply logical inductions and definitions to design processes ambiguous in the past then explore the possibilities of design methods. Evolving with times and varied perspectives, there are gradually increasing ways which could generate the difference of the natures in architectures – dynamic or static. Architecture has its own mode of dynamic or static representation in every era. Many studies have pointed out this variation derives from the advances of design media, but there still apparently lacks studies focus on the relationship between design processes and architectural representation. Thus, this research aims to juxtapose design methods with dynamic and static representation in architecture then summarize the possible correlation between these factors.
