summary Innovation in architectural design often follows technological innovation. This innovation can often be related to advances in construction techniques or design tools. This paper focuses on the development of a digital design environment for a new manufacturing process that can produce large architectural components. The design environment can be customized so that it incorporates both the flexibility and the constraints of the construction technology, such that the components produced maximize the core concept of the technology. Rapid Prototyping is a mature technology that has been around for 25 years in the manufacturing and product design industries. It is used primarily to speed up the product design cycle time from concept to physical realization for evaluation; it is now gaining a foothold in contemporary architectural practice. A number of protagonists are taking the Rapid Prototyping concept a stage further by developing large-scale processes capable of printing architectural components; there are even claims of the ability to produce whole buildings. These processes will give the architect a new palette of choice in terms of component design, and promise similar levels of geometric freedom as the Rapid Prototyping counterparts.

summary This research investigates how algorithm design and scripting as pedagogy can affect generalized design ability and understanding. Logical, systematic thinking is considered foundational in developing architectural design aptitude and is explicit when designing algorithms. The course work presented mandates the construction of process rather than product. Scripting is implemented not as a means to an end but rather a medium for exploration. More valuable than formal generator or problem-solver, these scripted designs test direct aesthetic implications. Further tested is the role of animation in de-linearizing the design process. By isolating the algorithm as topic, technique, and concept, scripting skills and the produced artifact are extendable and are translatable to other media. Algorithm design is presented as a 2-dimensional but temporal endeavor: students script an animate, interactive vector-based image. This facilitates the transition from algorithm to spatial experience while also readying students for form-based explorations. The 2-d temporal exercise is of a similar order of complexity to a 3-dimensional static condition. Pieces of the animation structure are provided as a canvas, specifically the ability of the viewer to manually control a single parametric variable that affects the visual output through a user-interface element. The following and final project of the course expands upon the technique of scripting image in the design of an experience by collaging video, images and animation.

summary The study of value and its transfer during the multi-disciplinary process of design is stable fodder for research; an entire issue of Design Studies has been devoted to Values in the Design Process. By scrutinising design meetings Dantec (2009) and Ball (2009) separately examine the mechanisms of value transfer between the agents involved in design (clients, designers, engineers). Dantec suggests this is best understood in terms of requirement, values and narrative; Ball proposes it should be viewed as a combination of "analogical reasoning" and "environmental simulation". If we look at Vitruvius and his primary architectural manual (Pollio 1960) we find values‚Äîin the form of firmitas, utilitas and venustas‚Äîembedded in this early codification of architectural practice. However, as much current research is restricted to design practice what occurs when value frameworks move between domains of cultural activity (such as design to construction and vice-versa) is not privileged with a comparably sizable body of research. This paper is concerned with the ongoing usage of pervasive media and cellular phones within communications and value transfer across the disciplinary threshold of design and construction. Through participation in a building project we analyse the subtleties of interaction between analogue communication such as sketches and digitally sponsored communication such as e-mail and mobile phone usage. Analysing the communications between the designer and builder during construction suggests it is also a creative process and the distinctions between design and construction processes are complex and often blurred. This work provides an observational basis for understanding mobile computing as a dynamic ‚Äòtuning‚Äô device‚Äîas hypothesized by Richard Coyne (2010)‚Äîthat ameliorates the brittleness of communication between different disciplines. A follow up study deploys ‚Äòdigital fieldnotes‚Äô (dfn) a bespoke iPhone application designed to test further suppositions regarding the influence exerted upon group working by mobile computing. Within collaboration individual communiqu_©s have different levels of importance depending on the specific topic of discussion and the contributing participant. This project furthers the earlier study; expanding upon what mobile computing is and enabling us to infer how these emergent devices affect collaboration. Findings from these two investigations suggest that the synchronous and asynchronous clamour of analogue and digital tools that surround design and construction are not exclusively inefficiencies or disruptions to be expunged. Observational evidence suggests they may provide contingency and continue to have value attending to the relationship between static components‚Äîand the avoidance of failure‚Äîwithin a complex system such as design and construction.

summary The goal to reach Simplicity has been the key point of Human- Computer Interface since 1980s. In this research, we would like to know what Simplicity is and how to reach it. We used case studies to get two factors of Simplicity, which are the information modeling and the experience of perception through senses. Based on the factors, we implemented a prototype to refine the concepts of simplicity. The prototype was a new attempt to consider only the simplicity of HCI. Further research efforts on emotion, creativity, and aesthetics related to simplicity are important.

summary My proposal is an investigation into the perceptual boundaries between human and architectural expression. It asks how architecture can creatively adopt human expression by using the emotions ‘displayed’ on the ‘surface face’ as a generator for displaying a surface on a voxel façade to achieve a cross-connecting perceptual change with modulations through emotion (Massumi, 2006). Through voxel facades the public with their expressed emotions will be included in the decision process of defining space, by expressing our innermost feelings through an architectural medium. Thus emotions of the individual have a platform and can be conveyed indirectly to the public, and in turn open up discussions about the state of the community through the state of the façade. An alliance of media and place in an urban context can be achieved and created, with the participation of its inhabitants, along with a new perception of how media and architecture can together shape and inform spatial relations for a feedback loop between private mood and public image.

summary This paper reports on the development of a multi-objective evolutionary developmental design environment, called EDDE. The goal of the system is to make it easier for designers to use evolutionary techniques to explore design possibilities. The system consists of a generic evolutionary core into which a set of design specific scripts need to be plugged in. The system uses a web based client-server architecture that can either be run on a single computer or on multiple computers in parallel. Initial experiments have shown the system to be effective in evolving designs.

summary Spacer fabrics are three dimensionally warp-knitted textiles that can be draped over complex double curved surfaces with no need for cut patterns or additional seams. This paper explains the development of an integral computational approach to the design and fabrication of sandwich composite structures with a spacer fabric core. Contrary to the common hierarchy of architectural design processes that prioritizes the definition of form over the inherent characteristics of materialization, this approach aims at an integral computational design process capable of unfolding a design from the constraints of making. The way the material capacity of spacer fabrics combined with the constraints of sandwich composite manufacturing directly informs the computational design process will be explained along the development of two prototype structures.

summary Mesh segmentation has become an important and well-researched topic in computational geometry in recent years (Agathos et al. 2008). As a result, a number of new approaches have been developed that have led to innovations in a diverse set of problems in computer graphics (CG) (Sharmir 2008). Specifically, a range of effective methods for the division of a mesh have recently been proposed, including by K-means (Shlafman et al. 2002), graph cuts (Golovinskiy and Funkhouser 2008; Katz and Tal 2003), hierarchical clustering (Garland et al. 2001; Gelfand and Guibas 2004; Golovinskiy and Funkhouser 2008), primitive fitting (Athene et al. 2004), random walks (Lai et al.), core extraction (Katz et al.) tubular multi-scale analysis (Mortara et al. 2004), spectral clustering (Liu and Zhang 2004), and critical point analysis (Lin et al. 20070, all of which depend upon a weighted graph representation, typically the dual of a given mesh (Sharmir 2008). While these approaches have been proven effective within the narrowly defined domains of application for which they have been developed (Chen 2009), they have not been brought to bear on wider classes of problems in fields outside of CG, specifically on problems relevant to generative architectural design. Given the widespread use of meshes and the utility of segmentation in GAD, by surveying the relevant and recently matured approaches to mesh segmentation in CG that share a common representation of the mesh dual, this paper identifies and takes steps to address a heretofore unrealized transfer of technology that would resolve a missed opportunity for both subject areas. Meshes are often employed by architectural designers for purposes that are distinct from and present a unique set of requirements in relation to similar applications that have enjoyed more focused study in computer science. This paper presents a survey of similar applications, including thin-sheet fabrication (Mitani and Suzuki 2004), rendering optimization (Garland et al. 2001), 3D mesh compression (Taubin et al. 1998), morphin (Shapira et al. 2008) and mesh simplification (Kalvin and Taylor 1996), and distinguish the requirements of these applications from those presented by GAD, including non-refinement in advance of the constraining of mesh geometry to planar-quad faces, and the ability to address a diversity of mesh features that may or may not be preserved. Following this survey of existing approaches and unmet needs, the authors assert that if a generalized framework for working with graph representations of meshes is developed, allowing for the interactive adjustment of edge weights, then the recent developments in mesh segmentation may be better brought to bear on GAD problems. This paper presents work toward the development of just such a framework, implemented as a plug-in for the visual programming environment Grasshopper.

summary This paper proposes changes in architectural education to respond to BIM technology and the resulting complexity in the design concept. We examine the interoperability issues between design and analysis in professional practice. We present the results of a case study mapping the activities of two interdisciplinary student teams in the early design phases of a BIM-enabled project. Results show the problems associated with building simulation tools, core knowledge lacking in architectural education, and the relationship between information management, team process, and the types of tools used. A flexible curricular structure is proposed in architectural education, expanding our professional roles.

title Interactive Hemostasis Modeling in Urban Network Design

summary This paper describes a type of project that images a city as it might exist given the integration of hemostatic procedures within pedestrian networks during emergencies requiring full-scale egress from an urban core. It articulates the steps taken to integrate a pre-existing C++ hemostasis model (C. Jacob, 2008) into Maya software in order to describe how the project operates on a computational level. By projecting these agent-based logics directly into/onto each pedestrian in the city (the smallest unit of the system), egress-oriented infrastructure can shift from being extensively predetermined in form (concrete barriers, metal railing, police barricades, etc.), to something more intensively defined, real-time, and locally on-demand. These procedures are situated within a larger schema based on the structural principles of Norbert Wiener's cybernetic feedback loops, that acknowledge and allow for hybrid (top-down + bottom-up) awareness and control within systems. The project attempts to ally itself with emerging forms of network design with similar structural typologies supported through the use of personal mobile devices (PMDs) in urban environments.

summary Urban disaster prevention is an important aspect in evaluating the whole-function of a city. It is the most important and actual method to make full use of urban open space and to construct urban disaster prevention system in the work of preventing urban disasters. This paper presents an approach to solve the problem about the population evacuation during the earthquake, and a new method to spread out population data which can distribute the population in a district and locate to every house finally. At the core of the algorithm, the Wave-front Method is used to calculate service range of each open space. Urban planners can evaluate the layout of urban open space according to the distribution of population and traveling time predicted. Lastly, this paper provides some evaluating indexes for open space to integrate all open space units.

summary The emergence of parametric generative design tools and prototyping manufacturing technology led to radical changes in architectural morphologies. This change increased the opportunity to develop innovative smart geometries. Integrating these algorithms in the parametric softwares led to variations in building design concepts increasing alternatives and decreasing the repetitive work previously needed in conventional CAD software. The chosen software in this research is Generative Components (GC). It is a software design tool for an associative and parametric design platform. It is tested for using Global Variables with associative functions during the concept creation and form GC comprises features. The results presented in this research may be considered an introduction to the smart geometry revolution. It deals with the generative design which applied in the design process from conceptual design phase, defining the problem, exploring design solutions, then how to develop the design phases. Office building is a building type which encourages new forms that needs computational processes to deal with repetitive functions and modular spaces and enclosed in a flexible creative structural skin. Generative design helps the office buildings to be arranged, analysed, and optimized using parameters in early stages in design process. By the end of the research, the use of the smart geometry in a high rise office building is defined and explained. The research is divided into three parts, first a summary of the basic theories of office buildings design and the sustainable requirements that affect it, and should be integrated. Secondly, the previous experiences in generating office buildings by Norman foster and Sergio Araya. At last, a case study is proposed to test and evaluate the use of the parametric generative methodology in designing an office building with specific emphasis on the function, environmental aspects and form generation using Generative Components (GC) Software.

summary The research on tectonics in the architectural field began from the middle of nineteenth century and in recent twenty years digital technology gradually developed and permeated through the field of architecture. Liu and Lim (2006, 2009) integrated classic and digital tectonic factors a present framework of new tectonics. However, the previous studies related to the tectonics in this digital age were only on architectural cases that use a great deal of digital media. The research wants to know what and how the tectonic factors affect the different spatial forms of modern architecture and focused on a case study of the diversified spatial forms, orthogonal, folding and curving. The results show the classic tectonic thinking is imperative until now. It is critical to prove the significance of adding the new digital tectonic factors in digital age.

summary The following project was created as part of an art residency with the Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research (WCMR) at Newcastle University. The WCMR specializes in leading-edge research into mitochondrial disease, investigating causes, treatments, and ways of avoiding hereditary transmission. Mitochondria is believed to have started off as a separate species that through symbiosis came to be the powerhouse of each cell in our bodies (Hird 2009). Mitochondrial disease is a genetic disorder that is caused by genetic mutations of the DNA of the mitochondria or the cell that in turn affects the mitochondria (Bolano 2018). Mitochondria is a hereditary condition and can affect people at different stages in their lives. It can affect various organs and has a link to various types of conditions. Therefore, the patient experience is unique to each individual and the elusive nature of the condition can make it particularly challenging due to the complexity of the disorder as well as the inaccessible scale on which these variations occur (Chinnery 2014)

summary This paper details a design process focused on explicit digital parametric modeling as an integral system-outcome design. This investigation isolates and alters a simple geometric form (cylinder) in a constructed architectural design method. Systems are defined as logical, sequential operations inherent to the resultant effects. These operations within each system are composed of various parameters, singular entities containing or referencing data. Given specific data, operations are preformed culminating with corresponding outcomes. The two main components of this research pertain to object extraction and transformation. A single grain silo (cylinder), as the architectural/geometric object under examination, is tested using a system of varied parameters inputted into the program Grasshopper, an “explicit history” graphic plug-in for Rhinoceros. This application is utilized to digitally manipulate parameters as objects in a nodal arrangement. Throughout the operations execution, this isolated silo will be transformed into a multitude of versions, then regrouped into the original cluster of silos to expose the implications from patterning, adjacency, and repetition given the proximity of the each silo and its new parametric characteristics. As the various parameters in specific operations affect the system as a whole, so is each adjacent silo in proximity given the same or similar operation? This then is translated and reflected in the outcome. This research seeks to explore design process by applying constant digital 3-D reductive geometric, modular forms inviting systems thinking in parametric environments that can lead to architectural design implications. By focusing on the technical aspect of the parameterization and valuing functionality rather then style, the process becomes focused on formal qualities as the system-outcome relationships. This research tests the “aesthetic implications” of a varied mode of digital design, namely the investigation of an architectural process utilizing parametric design.

summary In the current design practice, new digital tools have emerged -visual- also called Infrastructures (Perkel, 2011) such as; Behance 2003, Pinterest 2009, Archdaily 2008, Instagram (2010) -to cite the most recognized in the creative field in Argentina-, which promote different opportunities and support the creative process and problem solving, making it easier for designers to find inspiring material through the Internet. However, very little is known about how these new practices affect professional work, how they themselves see it and the tensions they generate.This article will present the results of a general survey applied to expert designers as part of the first stage of the Doctoral Research project. Which investigates the behavior referred specifically to the use of visual platforms -visual social media- in order to understand, characterize, describe the use and involvement of them within the design process.

summary Through the progress of digital media, dynamic concepts contribute to vivid forms. Nevertheless, these forms still present static space, which cannot reflect the designer’s dynamic concept, a shape that changes over time. This is a setback for design and fabrication. Hence many researchers turn to designing dynamic architecture. However, the current development restricted by technical threshold is prone to solve the variation of functions instead of aesthetic-oriented changeable form. It is obvious that the difference between “statics” and “dynamics” becomes a watershed of aesthetics and functions. This research attempts to eliminate the above-mentioned barrier and to suggest a new CAD/CAM fabrication procedure based on aesthetics and reveal key tectonic factors that affect dynamic architecture.
