summary Tensegrity structures are of interest to architecture and engineering as a practical means to explore lightweight and rapidly deployable modular structures that have a high degree of geometric freedom and formal potency. The notion of tensegrity structures with 3D ‘compressed’ components is introduced and their feasibility is demonstrated through selected physical models. Attempts to further explore the architectural potential of tensegrity structures within a computational environment have proven difficult, as they are statically indeterminate and require form finding procedures to “find a geometry compatible with a self-stress state” (Motro 2002). An overview of tensegrity ‘capable’ software that can be used for architectural design is followed by a discussion that introduces an additional computational method based on particle-spring systems. This approach enables real time manipulation of tensegrity networks. Two projects that utilize this unique tool are described.

Our perception of forms and structures are also shifting through use of computational techniques. From this aspect, mathematical models can be considered as the first step to analyze the complex forms and structures in nature. In this paper it is aimed to initiate a platform in architecture which will serve for discussions to explore the potentials of these interactions under the impact of computational and information technologies, not only in terms of formal/visual way, but also extending to learn more about the formation process in nature.

summary In the paper the main stages of the evolution of aided design methods (which led to the formation of new spaces of creation) will be presented. The first way in which human tried make his work easier were direct introduction of scientific researches in practice. Comprehension and studying the structure of design process creates real conditions for increase of its efficiency. Thanks to methodological researches the systematic design methods were developed. The next steep was introducing the IT technologies into the design process. Firstly as a simple tool, and after as the participant of the creative process. Last years an idea of “direct designing” – the use of VR as an environment for the spatial forms creation was elaborated. The environment starts to play a role of an active mediator joining the real world, the men and the computer. In this environment the designer has access to the processes and sources of creative activity. The qualitatively new process of architectural designing arises.

summary We investigate the recent coincidence of rapid global urbanization and unprecedented formal freedom in architectural design and ask whether this coincidence is an uneasy one. To study an extreme case of the new exotic geometries made possible through CAAD, we employ algebraic surfaces to experimentally design architecture in an university-based research and experimental design project. Such surfaces exhibit unprecedented complexity and new geometric and topological features yet are highly sound and harmonious. We continue and extend our research presented at the eCAADe 2009 conference in Istanbul.

summary The paper proposes integrated design and building systems for the provision of sustainable customized housing. It advances previous work by applying a methodology to generate these systems from vernacular precedents. The methodology is based on the use of shape grammars to derive and encode a contemporary system from the precedents. The combined set of rules can be applied to generate housing solutions tailored to specific user and site contexts. The provision of housing to shelter the population affected by the 2010 Haiti earthquake illustrates the application of the methodology. A computer implementation is currently under development in C# using the BIM platform provided by Revit. The world experiences a sharp increase in population and a strong urbanization process. These phenomena call for the development of effective means to solve the resulting housing deficit. The response of the informal sector to the problem, which relies mainly on handcrafted processes, has resulted in an increase of urban slums in many of the big cities, which lack sanitary and spatial conditions. The formal sector has produced monotonous environments based on the idea of mass production that one size fits all, which fails to meet individual and cultural needs. We propose an alternative approach in which mass customization is used to produce planed environments that possess qualities found in historical settlements. Mass customization, a new paradigm emerging due to the technological developments of the last decades, combines the economy of scale of mass production and the aesthetics and functional qualities of customization. Mass customization of housing is defined as the provision of houses that respond to the context in which they are built. The conceptual model for the mass customization of housing used departs from the idea of a housing type, which is the combined result of three systems (Habraken, 1988) -- spatial, building system, and stylistic -- and it includes a design system, a production system, and a computer system (Duarte, 2001). In previous work, this conceptual model was tested by developing a computer system for existing design and building systems (Benr__s and Duarte, 2009). The current work advances it by developing new and original design, building, and computer systems for a particular context. The urgent need to build fast in the aftermath of catastrophes quite often overrides any cultural concerns. As a result, the shelters provided in such circumstances are indistinct and impersonal. However, taking individual and cultural aspects into account might lead to a better identification of the population with their new environment, thereby minimizing the rupture caused in their lives. As the methodology to develop new housing systems is based on the idea of architectural precedents, choosing existing vernacular housing as a precedent permits the incorporation of cultural aspects and facilitates an identification of people with the new housing. In the Haiti case study, we chose as a precedent a housetype called “gingerbread houses”, which includes a wide range of houses from wealthy to very humble ones. Although the proposed design system was inspired by these houses, it was decided to adopt a contemporary take. The methodology to devise the new type was based on two ideas: precedents and transformations in design. In architecture, the use of precedents provides designers with typical solutions for particular problems and it constitutes a departing point for a new design. In our case, the precedent is an existing housetype. It has been shown (Duarte, 2001) that a particular housetype can be encoded by a shape grammar (Stiny, 1980) forming a design system. Studies in shape grammars have shown that the evolution of one style into another can be described as the transformation of one shape grammar into another (Knight, 1994). The used methodology departs takes off from these ideas and it comprises the following steps (Duarte, 2008): (1) Selection of precedents, (2) Derivation of an archetype; (3) Listing of rules; (4) Derivation of designs; (5) Cataloguing of solutions; (6) Derivation of tailored solution.

summary Computer-Aided Design (CAD) has become more and more part of the common architectural practice. Some designers have explored (in the past) different aspects, especially formal ones, allowed by these new information technologies. This paper’s goal is to explore the invention that would be specific to this new architectural practice. The hypothesis is to go back to the specificity of the image and to examine its evolution. This analysis will be done with reference to the « cycle of images » of the French philosopher Gilbert Simondon, described by means of stages and levels. This particular way of thinking will allow us, besides an overview of all those images in a genetic diagram, to reveal what can enable the passage from one level to another. We call this : “invention”.

summary The Cooperative Design Environment Laboratory (CoDE Lab) is carrying out a research with students, trainees and seniors who have previously participated to CAAD-assisted design courses. These courses were developed with the aim of making participants independent from the pre-analytical phase project to the renderings of the final artifact. The programs that have been used so far are Autodesk Revit, Graphisoft Archicad and Nemetschek Allplan.The teaching workgroup has always believed that analyzing, deconstructing and reconstructing the architecture teaches much in terms of understanding. If the process is done correctly, it entirely re-traces the creative dynamics developed by the original designer. Subsequently, the educational practice is to choose a notable architectural work, designed and/or created by a Master of architecture, and to reproduce it in all details: aesthetical-formal, morphological, technological, structural, modular, etc. The final result is an archive of well-developed reconstructed models of great specific interest. The students on the other hand thoroughly learn how to control the tools and all BIM planning procedures.

summary The aim of the following paper is to show a method of digital reconstruction and analysis of an important artifact pertaining to the Abruzzo cultural heritage, the ‘trabocco’. In fact recent software for graphics and architecture, such as CAD, graphics editor, and those dedicated to three-dimensional modeling and rendering are tools that open new opportunities in the study of cultural heritage artifacts, The more the complexity of the object to study, the more the advantages for their use. A formal and structural complexity characterize the trabocchi, pile constructions typical of the Abruzzo coast, that go back to the middle of XVII century and the subject of this study is the trabocco of Punta Turchinio, the most famous and complex of the coast. Among the digital reconstruction’s objectives there are: Increase the knowledge of the ‘trabocco’ and generate a series of information necessary to define and manage a recovery plan; to study more deeply the technologic decomposition of the four main sub-systems with related abacus of the technological elements and create static and animated graphics restitutions such as renderings and animations to understand some spatial and formal characteristics.

summary Within computational environmental design (CED), different Machine Learning (ML) models are gaining ground. They aim for time efficiency by automating simulation and speeding up environmental performance feedback. This study suggests an approach that enhances not the optimization but the generative aspect of environmentally driven ML processes in architectural design. We follow Stan Allen's (2009) idea of 'field conditions' as a bottom-up phenomenon according to which form and space emerge from local invisible and dynamic connections. By employing parametric modeling, environmental analysis data, and conditional Generative Adversarial Networks [cGAN] we introduce a generative approach in design that reverses the typical design process of going from formal interpretation to analysis and encourages the emergence of spatial configurations with embedded environmental intelligence. We call it Intensive-driven Environmental Design Computation [IEDC], and we employ it in a case study on a residential building typology encountered in the Mediterranean. The paper describes the process, emphasizing dataset preparation as the stage where the logic of field conditions is established. The proposed research differentiates from cGAN models that offer automatic environmental performance predictions to one that spatial predictions stem from dynamic fields.

summary 3D virtual worlds for collaborative design learning have been widely recognized and practised, nevertheless there is a general lack of formal evaluation with empirical evidence for the performance of virtual worlds, and their roles in developing students’ teamwork skills. In bridging these gaps, this paper provides a critical discussion of the effectiveness of virtual worlds for collaborative design learning, supported by a comprehensive analysis on the results of an inclusive questionnaire completed by architectural students. The paper provides insight into the application of virtual worlds in both technical and procedural experiences, and discusses the benefits and shortcomings of virtual worlds on design education.

summary The purpose of this research is to develop a process capable of optimizing the capture of light in a circumscribed space, using a responsive system of skylights. Research is focused on the design of irregular dome-like pavilion spaces circumscribed by curved surfaces, but the envisioned process might be applied to other functional, formal, and spatial typologies. The design of the pavilion starts with the generation of a surface, later tessellated into a matrix of skylights depending on the geographic location and sun orientation. In the constructed pavilion, the skylights react to the variation of daylight intensity during the day to satisfy specified internal lighting needs. Simultaneously, the integration of conception and fabrication using digital tools (CAD-CAM) facilitates the construction of a non-standard, parametric geometry, thereby diminishing the costs of production and allowing for personalization, while assuring global sustainability.

The integration of conception and fabrication with digital tools (CAD-CAM) enabled the construction of this non standard, parametric geometry, diminishing the costs of production, allowing personalization and assuring global sustainability.

summary Donald Schön embraces a constructivist approach to learning and research., characterising designing as a reflective conversation between designer and the materials of a design situation. Accordingly, Schön’s views on digital design support are based on his valuing of indeterminacy, surprise and ambiguity as opportunities to develop new understanding and insight. His criticism of technical rationality is directed towards the privileging of formal and codified knowledge over embodied and tacit forms of knowing. While Schön’s work is increasingly acknowledged in recent CAAD research, respective publications typically remain within the technical rationality perspective. Based on several characteristic examples, this paper examines how Schön’s ideas are absorbed into a perspective incongruous to his own, concluding with a discussion of potential new research approaches that sustain Schön’s values.

summary This paper details a design process focused on explicit digital parametric modeling as an integral system-outcome design. This investigation isolates and alters a simple geometric form (cylinder) in a constructed architectural design method. Systems are defined as logical, sequential operations inherent to the resultant effects. These operations within each system are composed of various parameters, singular entities containing or referencing data. Given specific data, operations are preformed culminating with corresponding outcomes. The two main components of this research pertain to object extraction and transformation. A single grain silo (cylinder), as the architectural/geometric object under examination, is tested using a system of varied parameters inputted into the program Grasshopper, an “explicit history” graphic plug-in for Rhinoceros. This application is utilized to digitally manipulate parameters as objects in a nodal arrangement. Throughout the operations execution, this isolated silo will be transformed into a multitude of versions, then regrouped into the original cluster of silos to expose the implications from patterning, adjacency, and repetition given the proximity of the each silo and its new parametric characteristics. As the various parameters in specific operations affect the system as a whole, so is each adjacent silo in proximity given the same or similar operation? This then is translated and reflected in the outcome. This research seeks to explore design process by applying constant digital 3-D reductive geometric, modular forms inviting systems thinking in parametric environments that can lead to architectural design implications. By focusing on the technical aspect of the parameterization and valuing functionality rather then style, the process becomes focused on formal qualities as the system-outcome relationships. This research tests the “aesthetic implications” of a varied mode of digital design, namely the investigation of an architectural process utilizing parametric design.

summary Language is a particular kind of formal structure. It allows systematic approach to the subject matter for the speaker while providing an exploratory space to reason with. In this paper, we present a simple language that describes spatial qualities of architecture based on the geometry of built elements. We also provide a detailed description of the components and the structure of our language and show how one might construct compound definitions using the language. We then discuss the implication of constructing a language and how we can use it as a tool and research model in the study of architecture.

summary Informal has to do with shifting certainties and the insertion of unexpected, chance and improvisation. The ‘formalization’ of the informal is the subject of this paper; seeking to explore the possibility to have atypical and not rigorous formalizations. But if that is possible until what point informality can be described and designed? By presenting an experimental and realized architectural project we bring forward the necessity of rethinking the concepts of design and construction evolution. There is a strong relation between techniques and the generation, control and construction of complex forms. It is clear that the animation techniques and the dynamic vectorial systems that they are used during the design process played a vital role in the liberation from a pre-conceived typology, as well as in morphing, in controlling, and in materialization of the new that didn’t exist before.

summary Relationships are amplified and collapsed together as animate surfaces in the formal and spatial manifestation of design parameters. Animation is demonstrated as a medium to express topologies, as each frame is the resultant of a programmed serious of computations, the result of which varies with a parameter: effectively, time. Related conditions are parameterized through the design of algorithms as a means of direct translation into animation. Interrelated forces and limits can conversely congeal into statics with animate qualities. Process and product merge to create a language of phenomenological effects and patterns. While animation is exploited to represent parametric relationships there is a maintained awareness of time and space. The systemization and codification of design “problems” simultaneously facilitates functional, solution-driven architecture. The output is characterized by complex, performative, and specific solutions uniquely relevant to emerging models for fabrication and construction. Usage requirements and site conditions carry the weight of information-based contexts and experience-based symbols as fuel for the inherently cyclical process.

The course work presented mandates the construction of process rather than product. Scripting is implemented not as a means to an end but rather a medium for exploration. More valuable than formal generator or problem-solver, these scripted designs test direct aesthetic implications. Further tested is the role of animation in de-linearizing the design process. By isolating the algorithm as topic, technique, and concept, scripting skills and the produced artifact are extendable and are translatable to other media. Algorithm design is presented as a 2-dimensional but temporal endeavor: students script an animate, interactive vector-based image. This facilitates the transition from algorithm to spatial experience while also readying students for form-based explorations. The 2-d temporal exercise is of a similar order of complexity to a 3-dimensional static condition. Pieces of the animation structure are provided as a canvas, specifically the ability of the viewer to manually control a single parametric variable that affects the visual output through a user-interface element. The following and final project of the course expands upon the technique of scripting image in the design of an experience by collaging video, images and animation.

summary This paper will describe the design and evolution of an open source Ruby plug-in for Google SketchUp that allows geometry with UVW mapping to be exported for integration within a popular first person computer game (UT2004 and UT3 by Epic games). It will illustrate the advantages of this simplified workflow by discussing the range of complex geometries, lighting, atmospherics and interactive opportunities arrived at by students at the University of New South Wales School of Architecture. The paper will use examples of work generated using this new workflow to critically reflect on previous efforts in the use of computer games technology for architectural representation. An argument is made that while the instability that characterized computer game modding in the recent past can be productively embodied by experienced designers in architectural design projects instability itself and the complexities it engenders does not facilitate computer game modding by less experienced designers. The formal complexity and richness of experience presented by less experienced student’s speaks to the advantages of using a simplified workflow while highlighting strengths and weaknesses in previous approaches.

summary In the research project presented in this paper we investigate the architectonic and constructive potential of additive digital fabrication in timber construction through robotic processes as well as the relation of functional requirements of an exterior wooden wall to design. Form finding through performance analysis is of great interest for architects. With advanced digital fabrication technologies at hand it is possible to produce articulate building elements. This can be exploited to analyze and transform performance criteria into architectural expression. We argue that functional requirements and formal characteristics are interdependent. To allow performance criteria drive the generative parameters of design, custom software tools need to be developed which impart physical aspects of building elements to digital design models.
