summary The Catoptric Surface research project explores methods of reflecting daylight through a building envelope to form an image-based pattern of light on the interior environment. This research investigates the generation of atmospheric effects from daylighting projected onto architectural surfaces within a built environment in an attempt to amplify or reduce spatial perception. The mapping of variable organizations of light onto existing or new surfaces creates a condition where the perception of space does not rely on form alone. This condition creates a visual effect of a formless atmosphere and affects the way people use the space. Often the desired quantity and quality of daylight varies due to factors such as physiological differences due to age or the types of tasks people perform (Lechner 2009). Yet the dominant mode of thought toward the use of daylighting tends to promote a homogeneous environment, in that the resulting lighting level is the same throughout a space. This research project questions the desire for uniform lighting levels in favor of variegated and heterogeneous conditions. The main objective of this research is the production of a unique facade system that is capable of dynamically redirecting daylight to key locations deep within a building. Mirrors in a vertical array are individually adjusted via stepper motors in order to reflect more or less intense daylight into the interior space according to sun position and an image-based map. The image-based approach provides a way to specifically target lighting conditions, atmospheric effects, and the perception of space.

summary Over the last decade, paradigm shifts in the philosophy of space-time relations, the change from space-time to spatio-temporality, caused significant changes in the design field, and introduced new variations and discourses for parametric approaches in architecture. Among all the discourses, parametricism is likely the most spectacular one. The founder of parametricism, Patrik Schumacher (2009) describes it as “a new style,” which has “the superior capacity to articulate programmatic complexity;” and “aesthetically, it is the elegance of ordered complexity in the sense of seamless fluidity.” In its theoretical background, Schumacher (2011) affiliates this style with the philosophy of autopoiesis, the philosophy that stands between making and becoming. Additionally, parametricism concerns not only the physical geometry in making of form; but also discusses the relational and causal aspects in becoming of form. In other words, it brings the aesthetic qualities in making through the topological intelligence behind becoming. Regarding that, parametricism seems an effective way of managing /creating complex topologies in form-related issues. However, when it comes to practice, there are some challenging points of parametricism in large-scale design studies. Thus, this work underlines that the dominance of elegance for urban planning has the potential of limiting the flexible and dynamic topology of the urban context, and objectifying the whole complex urban form as an over-designed product. For an aesthetic inquiry into urban parametricism, this paper highlights the challenging issues behind the aesthetic premises of parametricism at the urban design scale. For that, Kartal Master Plan Design Proposal by Zaha Hadid Architects (2006) will be discussed as an exemplary work.

summary Within computational environmental design (CED), different Machine Learning (ML) models are gaining ground. They aim for time efficiency by automating simulation and speeding up environmental performance feedback. This study suggests an approach that enhances not the optimization but the generative aspect of environmentally driven ML processes in architectural design. We follow Stan Allen's (2009) idea of 'field conditions' as a bottom-up phenomenon according to which form and space emerge from local invisible and dynamic connections. By employing parametric modeling, environmental analysis data, and conditional Generative Adversarial Networks [cGAN] we introduce a generative approach in design that reverses the typical design process of going from formal interpretation to analysis and encourages the emergence of spatial configurations with embedded environmental intelligence. We call it Intensive-driven Environmental Design Computation [IEDC], and we employ it in a case study on a residential building typology encountered in the Mediterranean. The paper describes the process, emphasizing dataset preparation as the stage where the logic of field conditions is established. The proposed research differentiates from cGAN models that offer automatic environmental performance predictions to one that spatial predictions stem from dynamic fields.

summary The aim of this paper is the discussion of aspects like accident and programming in the creative process in Media Art As a transdisciplinary and collaborative activity, it could be seen as a possibility for knowledge construction and sharing spaces. It also shows how media art practice can be used as a reference for the creative process in the architectural field. Building knowledge spaces through creative processes is a challenge based on the latest reconfiguration of the relations among artists, artworks and observers, which were enhanced after digital technology. Designing knowledge space as collaborative process, we assume that our examination contribute to any field by stimulating the transitions from analog to digital culture.

summary This paper argues that familiarity is the tool that enables the understanding of space abstraction and representation. Familiarity in this context is independent from embodied interaction, and is crudely based on the connection between the various similar images of space; in this particular case, virtual space. Our investigation into the nature of human interaction with space, its abstraction and its representation is based on the critical contrast between the outcomes of interaction with two virtual versions of a physical reality; the first version is a non-linear interactive graphical abstraction of the space where no assertions or indicators are given as to whether or not there is a relationship between the abstraction and its physical reality, whereas the second is a none-linear interactive 3D virtual environment clearly representing the physical space in question. The paper utilises qualitative methods of investigation in order to gain an insight into human embodied experience in space, its abstraction and representation.

It is expected to play an important role in urban planning, disaster simulation etc. Recent advanced remote sensing technologies, which are capable to quickly provide detailed information of city areas, ease the construction of 3D city models. Urbanization has evinced interest from a wide section of the society including experts, amateurs and novices. With the development and infrastructure initiatives mostly around the urban centers, the impacts of urbanization and sprawl would be on the environment and the natural resources. The research introduces an application of 3D GIS on Manama City.

summary This paper discusses the issues involved with the introduction of the storyboard and the animatic in a design studio exercise. Storyboards - sketches used in film planning -, and the animatic - basically a moving storyboard - allow the student to understand space within in the context of a narrative. The purpose of the exercise was to enable the expression of subjectively experienced space in an early stage of urban context analysis. Differently than the traditional approach to animation which results a camera traveling through a path, the exercise approached animation from the perspective of the stories about the place.

summary Responsiveness to site conditions and environment is one of the axioms of architectural design. However, most students’ design is made in a non-geo-coordinated cyberspace through CAAD design and thus leading to “flying” proposals” that are not attached to the context. GIS teaches students in architecture to initially refer to real locations as the space in which they design is geo-coordinated and provides the wider context of the project. Along the design process, the project surroundings from macro scale; that is the globe, to the micro-scale that is reflected in the existing buildings, the road network and the topography are constantly present. At the end stage, the project is seen not as a free standing building but rather as an integral part in a real place on Earth. The 3-D urban visualization gives the possibility of evaluating the degree of success of place-making and the fitness of the project to its context. The aim of the paper is to present how a GIS course can support CAAD and improve the architectural design process as well as the quality of the design output towards a contextual architecture. The paper is based on the experience of the author who is architects and urban planner, in teaching design studios and Urban Planning based on GIS as an elective course to graduating students in architecture at the University of Bahrain. It presents an alternative method that is called Permanent Presence of the Real World PPRW.

summary The way screens are attached to architecture at present limits architectural surfaces to carriers of signs. The research presented in this paper offers a possible solution that allows architectural surfaces to be both a space-defining element that has certain architectural material qualities and at the same time allows media technology to be embedded. These surfaces can alter their state from static material to dynamic image in an instance. The paper presents a prototype capable of fulfilling this requirement. It also positions the research within the architectural discussion by comparing it to works of others and confirming its research value by reference to work in a similar direction. Finally, the paper evaluates the research and concludes that it could offer a ‘fabric’ to be used as a sort of media clothing for architecture in the electronic age (Ito, 2001).

summary This paper discusses embodied interaction followed by a survey of examples in installation art and research projects that attempt to fuse physical space and digital technology. From studying the examples, we propose a categorization of types for a better understanding of interactive spaces. Design attributes are also identified from the examples. We hope this will be useful to designers in designing engaging interactive spaces.

summary There is a common belief that music and architecture are connected through a hidden a dimension. Both arts, when abstracted intellectually (through mathematics) or emotionally (through phenomenological experience), share a number of ordering principles, having the same notion of crescendo in sequence and progression. Many have sought to unlock this hidden dimension to create artwork that lets our souls transcend up to the heavens. There are five different methods where architects have used music in their design approach: there are those who use harmonic proportions found in musical consonances as room dimensions to create harmonic spaces, flowing into each other like musical chords (Palladio, Steven Holl); those who believe that music is ‘design in time’ use rhythmic elements of music and apply it to their vertical surfaces and structural grids (Iannis Xenakis, Le Corbusier); those who use architecture as a musical instrument experiment with sound and acoustics to create a phenomenological environment (Bernhard Leitner, Peter Zumthor); those gifted with synethsesia (stimulating one sensory preceptor with another, e.g. seeing colors by listening to music, or vice versa) use certain musical pieces as an inspiration for form generation (Wassily Kandinsky, Steven Holl); and there are those who deconstruct an element in music and reconstruct it to architectural form, highlighting common themes between both arts (Iannis Xenakis, Daniel Libeskind). These five different methods have been the topic of research of many architectural scholars using western music as reference. The question becomes what if the musical reference is changed? Classical, rock, pop, country, jazz, and blues music are very different from one another, yet they share similar foundational musical structures. One may go further and experiment with various world music as reference, which is very different than western music in terms of musical structure. Linguists and musicologists have discussed the origins of music in relation to language. They hypothesize that cognitive elements found in language are somehow carried into the region's music. This paper documents the research of the author in this topic, discussing the digital modeling applications adopted that make such an investigation possible. The interest here is exploring how the visual space is altered when the musical reference is changed, and whether properties of the musical reference are evident in the architectural visualization. The musical references will be limited to Western Classical and Arabic music.

summary Logic and evolution in ontogenetic processes for Architectural design was the title for a summer program taught at the Escuela de Arquitectura of the Universidad Anahuac from June to July 2008 in the State of Mexico, Mexico. Every single result in architectural design follows logical steps enclosed in the design processes. These logical processes evolve through space-time sequences in order to generate a diversity of possible solutions. In Biology an ontogenetic process refers to the development of an individual organism, anatomical or behavioral feature from the earliest stage to maturity. Following this development criteria students were encouraged to understand the main logics of natural and physical systems through the aid of computer programming. These logics must be understood as tridimensional geometries digitally generated. Right from the beginning all processes generated during the explorations and investigations had to be visualized as integral design performances. The integral design system must embedded structure, function, form and material capacities through the aid of computer programming, digital fabrication technologies and material assembling techniques. It is important to note that final prototypes had to demonstrate the diversity of capacities of the whole system in order to automate the components in evolution.

summary With the advent of information theories, contemporary architecture is approached in terms of the energetic formations of memorization, association and connection. The former architectural diagram becomes a concretization, an instance, one possibility, of an operational code. Memorization refers to the ability of architecture to embed information within the deepest composition of matter. Architectural performance has always been revealed by the integration, or association, of multiple parameters. Connections are vectors which fuse the knowledge of heterogeneous symbiotic human environments. In the “C-chair”, a project by our laboratory Open Source Architecture, abstract objects such as points, lines, and surfaces act as memorizers of information. As the codified system reacts to external forces, an association of two distinct graph structures is developed and connections are formed as the architectural object emerges.

summary This paper shares findings from the project DevA (Developable surfaces in Architecture), a research by design based project developed a collaboration between academic and industry partners. The project aims to investigate the use of curved sheet material in architecture using hybridised 3D modelling and pattern cutting techniques. The project investigates how digital design and fabrication technologies enable the development of new structural concepts through the new means of material specification and detailing at unprecedented levels of precision. summary Energy consumption in buildings is responsible for about 40% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions. It is quite feasible that the energy consumption in buildings can be halved, but energy performance analysis must be integral to the entire design process. This imperative has led the authors to propose that architecture, engineering and science should be syncretized in the design process. This syncretization shares some features of the rhizomatic approach introduced by Deleuze and Guattari (2007). In rhizomatic systems all points can be, and should be connected. A rhizome can be considered as a space that develops, not from a point but from milieux. In the expansion of a rhizome, elements of the system do not follow tracings of other elements but they form a map of new vistas. Likewise, a syncretic approach is oblivious to the traditional boundaries between architecture, engineering and science. Syncretization has the potential to enrich the intellectual lives of architects, scientists and engineers, and it would have profoundly beneficial performative benefits.

summary This research examines the value of “redesigning the brick,” in creating a new vocabulary of basic architectural building blocks with autonomous reconfigurable robotics. The paper highlights several built examples by the author of robotic architectural environments and the work of architecture students whereby individual modules were created within the context of a design studio and applied to scenarios of space making at various scales. Several strategies for decentralized control were explored dictating how individual parts of a system should behave and how local interactions between individual modules can lead to the emergence of global behaviour. The students schematically designed selfreplicating models which would allow for each object to be able to attach, detach, and reconfigure according to predetermined computational logic. The projects successfully demonstrate various strategies for mechanical design, locomotion and control.

summary In 1995, Robin Evans points out in his book The Projective Cast how the development of techniques changed architecture and the space inhabited in times of Gothic and early Renaissance. We see a parallel phenomenon today, where the interplay of technology and tool gives shape to new design (Kolarevic 2005). Yet in opposition to the interwoven fields of design and craft of the late Gothic, today’s building sector is enormously diversified, and a growing complexity in the building process and number of used materials can be observed. This gives an opposite point of departure into a more integrated field of design and innovation in architectural design and building industry.

summary In the summer of 2018, our collaboration was awarded a University Design Fellowship from the Exhibit Columbus organization to design, fabricate, and build a large pavilion in Columbus, Indiana as part of a biannual contemporary architecture exhibition. Our proposal for the competition was a pavilion that would double as an ecological education center. Our inspiration for this program was triggered in part by our reading of Jane Bennett’s materialist philosophy outlined in her book Vibrant Matter (2009). Through Bennett’s lens, our design rendered our site’s context as an animate field, replete with pre-existing material composites that we wanted to celebrate through a series of displays, information boards, and artificial lighting. In this, the installation would feature samples of local plants, minerals, and rocks, indigenous to Southern Indiana.

summary This paper proposes an integrative approach in the evaluative phase of the design process, incorporating concepts, methodologies and measurement strategies that are well established in media psychology. The paper suggests a variable-centered approach for conceptualizing visualization technologies and to evaluate their potential to simulate architectural experience. Psychophysiological measures are introduced to capture the affective component of the architectural experience facilitated by visualization tools such as virtual reality. These are important in order to empirically evaluate the experiential aspects of an architectural space through visualization. summary Increasing productivity and efficiency is an important issue in the AEC field. This area is mainly characterized by fragmentation, heterogeneous teams with low lifetimes and many uncertainties. 4D CAD is one of the greatest innovations in recent years. It consists in linking a 3D model of the building with the works planning in order to simulate the construction evolution over time. 4D CAD can fill several needs from design to project management through constructivity analysis and tasks planning (Tommelein 2003). The literature shows that several applications have been proposed to improve the 4D CAD use (Chau et al. 2004; Lu et al. 2007; Seok & al. 2009). In addition, studies have shown the real impact of 4D CAD use in construction projects (Staub-French & Khanzode 2007; Dawood & Sika 2007). More recently, Mahalingam et al. (2010) showed that the collaborative use of 4D CAD is particularly useful during the pre-construction phase for comparing the constructability of working methods, for visually identifying conflicts and clashes (overlaps), and as visual tool for practitioners to discuss and to plan project progress. So the advantage of the 4D CAD collaborative use is demonstrated. Moreover, several studies have been conducted both in the scientific community and in the industrial world to improve it (Zhou et al. 2009; Kang et al. 2007). But an important need that remains in collaborative 4D CAD use in construction projects is about the adaptation of visualization to the users business needs. Indeed, construction projects have very specific characteristics (fragmentation, variable team, different roles from one project to another). Moreover, in the AEC field several visualization techniques can represent the same concept and actors choose one or another of these techniques according to their specific needs related to the task they have to perform. For example, the tasks planning may be represented by a Gantt chart or by a PERT network and the building elements can be depicted with a 3D model or a 2D plan. The classical view (3D + Gantt) proposed to all practitioners in the available 4D tools seems therefore not suiting the needs of all. So, our research is based on the hypothesis that adapting the visualization to individual business needs could significantly improve the collaboration. This work relies on previous ones and aim to develop a method 1) to choose the best suited views for performed tasks and 2) to compose adapted multiple views for each actor, that we call “business views”. We propose a 4 steps-method to compose business views. The first step identifies the users’ business needs, defining the individual practices performed by each actor, identifying his business tasks and his information needs. The second step identifies the visualization needs related to the identified business needs. For this purpose, the user’s interactions and visualization tasks are described. This enables choosing the most appropriate visualization techniques for each need (step 3). At this step, it is important to describe the visualization techniques and to be able to compare them. Therefore, we proposed a business view metamodel. The final step (step 4) selects the adapted views, defines the coordination mechanisms and the interaction principles in order to compose coordinated visualizations. A final step consists in a validation work to ensure that the composed views really match to the described business needs. This paper presents the latest version of the method and especially presents our latest works about its first and second steps. These include making more generic the business tasks description in order to be applicable within most of construction projects and enabling to make correspondence with visualization tasks.
