title The Design of a Mobile Navigation System Based on QR Codes for Historic Buildings

summary Due to the rapid development of mobile and compact electronic devices such as PDAs and smart phones, designers and developers now have to consider user mobility and the dynamic context of use in the design of interactive systems. In this study, literatures associated with mobile navigation systems in museums and historic buildings are first reviewed in order to understand the features, advantages, and drawbacks of current mobile navigation technology. The feasibility of applying QR codes in the navigation of historic buildings is then discussed, and the mobile navigation principles mentioned in previous literatures are applied in our proposed system. A number of common problems are encountered in the navigation of local historic buildings or museums. Visitors (1) cannot understand what makes an exhibited item a work of art; (2) do not know where to start or how to get started; (3) feel rushed by guides during the guided tour; and (4) find that the audio guide is not clear enough. Managers of historic buildings or museums are generally concerned about (1) the high cost of constructing a mobile navigation environment; (2) possible damage to devices; and (3) the cost of device maintenance. This study attempts to solve the above issues by constructing an affordable digital navigation environment that enables users to clearly understand each exhibited item and its location.

summary The principal objective of building management is to control facilities planning and facilities operations and maintenance, that effective criteria in strategic planning about preventive maintenance and predictive maintenance. The key of success in managing the building and facilities is all about collecting and interpreting data on diverse facets of property use. Computer databases are the ideal vehicles in which to log, store and manipulate data; almost unlimited information can be measured and entered en masse. The strength of such information storage is its capacity for expansion and the diversity of subject; it becomes large and requires greater and greater operator familiarity with its structure in order to interrogate successfully. The ultimate solution is to computer–base the entire operation, by using the three-dimensional building modelling to control the operation. This solution will simulate building in virtual environment and the building system data (Architectural part and Engineering part) will collect in digital data type. The digital data will classification and made three-dimensional database relations. This research focus in three sections of the operation as three-dimensional database relationship, topological simulation and smart system, that applied to generate the prototype building management application “Architecture Building Facilities Management: ABFM”.

summary The paper proposes integrated design and building systems for the provision of sustainable customized housing. It advances previous work by applying a methodology to generate these systems from vernacular precedents. The methodology is based on the use of shape grammars to derive and encode a contemporary system from the precedents. The combined set of rules can be applied to generate housing solutions tailored to specific user and site contexts. The provision of housing to shelter the population affected by the 2010 Haiti earthquake illustrates the application of the methodology. A computer implementation is currently under development in C# using the BIM platform provided by Revit. The world experiences a sharp increase in population and a strong urbanization process. These phenomena call for the development of effective means to solve the resulting housing deficit. The response of the informal sector to the problem, which relies mainly on handcrafted processes, has resulted in an increase of urban slums in many of the big cities, which lack sanitary and spatial conditions. The formal sector has produced monotonous environments based on the idea of mass production that one size fits all, which fails to meet individual and cultural needs. We propose an alternative approach in which mass customization is used to produce planed environments that possess qualities found in historical settlements. Mass customization, a new paradigm emerging due to the technological developments of the last decades, combines the economy of scale of mass production and the aesthetics and functional qualities of customization. Mass customization of housing is defined as the provision of houses that respond to the context in which they are built. The conceptual model for the mass customization of housing used departs from the idea of a housing type, which is the combined result of three systems (Habraken, 1988) -- spatial, building system, and stylistic -- and it includes a design system, a production system, and a computer system (Duarte, 2001). In previous work, this conceptual model was tested by developing a computer system for existing design and building systems (Benr__s and Duarte, 2009). The current work advances it by developing new and original design, building, and computer systems for a particular context. The urgent need to build fast in the aftermath of catastrophes quite often overrides any cultural concerns. As a result, the shelters provided in such circumstances are indistinct and impersonal. However, taking individual and cultural aspects into account might lead to a better identification of the population with their new environment, thereby minimizing the rupture caused in their lives. As the methodology to develop new housing systems is based on the idea of architectural precedents, choosing existing vernacular housing as a precedent permits the incorporation of cultural aspects and facilitates an identification of people with the new housing. In the Haiti case study, we chose as a precedent a housetype called “gingerbread houses”, which includes a wide range of houses from wealthy to very humble ones. Although the proposed design system was inspired by these houses, it was decided to adopt a contemporary take. The methodology to devise the new type was based on two ideas: precedents and transformations in design. In architecture, the use of precedents provides designers with typical solutions for particular problems and it constitutes a departing point for a new design. In our case, the precedent is an existing housetype. It has been shown (Duarte, 2001) that a particular housetype can be encoded by a shape grammar (Stiny, 1980) forming a design system. Studies in shape grammars have shown that the evolution of one style into another can be described as the transformation of one shape grammar into another (Knight, 1994). The used methodology departs takes off from these ideas and it comprises the following steps (Duarte, 2008): (1) Selection of precedents, (2) Derivation of an archetype; (3) Listing of rules; (4) Derivation of designs; (5) Cataloguing of solutions; (6) Derivation of tailored solution.

It describes communication methods based on parameters and diagrams, between computer scientists and urban, architectural professionals and the matching abilities to give meaning to the various parts and elements of the system. By means of the development of two rule based applications it exploits different degrees of automation and kinds of feedback possibilities and its impact on discourse and decision making. It discusses design methods for interactive urban planning applications, which integrate the different requirements and benefits from both disciplines.

summary This work proposes the use of partial order lattices along with represent-ational schemes to account for patterns of ambiguity and emergence in the description of designs. The complexity of such designs is viewed as an aggregation of spatial layers that can all be decomposed by the subgroup relations of the symmetry of the configuration. At the end, this methodology points to a combinatorial approach that generates visual prototypes for future use in design synthesis. Here, Meier’s work is just a case study that validates the group theoretical approach.

summary Within computational environmental design (CED), different Machine Learning (ML) models are gaining ground. They aim for time efficiency by automating simulation and speeding up environmental performance feedback. This study suggests an approach that enhances not the optimization but the generative aspect of environmentally driven ML processes in architectural design. We follow Stan Allen's (2009) idea of 'field conditions' as a bottom-up phenomenon according to which form and space emerge from local invisible and dynamic connections. By employing parametric modeling, environmental analysis data, and conditional Generative Adversarial Networks [cGAN] we introduce a generative approach in design that reverses the typical design process of going from formal interpretation to analysis and encourages the emergence of spatial configurations with embedded environmental intelligence. We call it Intensive-driven Environmental Design Computation [IEDC], and we employ it in a case study on a residential building typology encountered in the Mediterranean. The paper describes the process, emphasizing dataset preparation as the stage where the logic of field conditions is established. The proposed research differentiates from cGAN models that offer automatic environmental performance predictions to one that spatial predictions stem from dynamic fields.

summary This paper details a series of preliminary explorations into the concept of kinetic tensegrity grids that can respond to stimuli by changing their shape, porosity, and transparency. The research presented explores double-layer tensegrity grids that utilize 3D “compressed” components. A case study demonstrates their applicability to the formation of sophisticated building envelopes that can actively or passively respond to changes in the environment. A computational form-finding tool is introduced to study design variations in real time. This tool is shown to expand the design spectrum by supporting increased complexity and revealing unexpected design potential. summary The paper outlines the relevance of computational geometry within the design and production process of architecture. Based on the case study “Twister”, the digital chain - from the initial form-finding to the final realization of spatial concepts - is discussed in relation to geometric principles. The association with the fascinating complexity, which can be found in nature and its underlying geometry was the starting point for the project presented in the paper. The translation of geometric principles into a three-dimensional digital design model was followed by a process of transformation and optimization of the initial shape, that integrated aesthetic, spatial and structural qualities as well as aspects of material properties and conditions of production.

summary In this era, people are no longer satisfied with standardized products. Designers need to implement unique product semantics to attract customers to buy the products. According to this reason, designers are developing a new design approach that puts cultural elements into their products so that they can make people reappreciate their own culture and history. The Olympics is a global event which involves various sport competitions. Before the Beijing Olympic Games, many host nations used to promote their culture through selling a variety of merchandise. It is the first time for the Olympic Games to take place in China which means that it is obviously the right timing to see cultural symbols of China in the merchandises created by the Chinese design team. These designs had introduced Chinese imageries to the whole world. As generally known, traditional culture of Taiwan actually took root from China. Taiwan owns the same ancient history and materials like China. This study explores the cultural identity and analyses the cultural design elements of China. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is taken as case study in this research, because it helps people think how to create new value from their own culture. Furthermore, this paper proposes some suggestions on how to create design which represents the image of Taiwan.

summary The aim of the paper is to establish an ontology-based case encoding tool with sufficient formalization and expansibility to assist users for organizing the case information and increasing the feasibility of the design knowledge in a case library. The tool is named Open Case Study (OCS). OCS is a formalized and expandable tool for authoring metadata of a case library and organizing them by their semantic ontology. By using the templates constructed by design experts, such as design teachers or experienced architects, OCS provides the user with explicit but adaptable guidelines for case analysis and encoding. OCS then performs the searching and mapping function provided by Open Ontology. Thus, when the user is encoding the information segments of cases, relevant knowledge chunks in the case library can then be immediately provided, such as relevant senses in similar cases, all atoms of a relevant sense, and known value ranges of a relevant property. This assists users to avoid data mistake and duplication in encoding design cases.

summary The research, which is the subject of this paper, is concerned with the integration of the environmental variables in the process of architectural design. It is contended that the theory and the architectural practice are characterised by everlasting series of determinisms, which make some design variables to be eluded in the design process. Several hypotheses are put forward in order to explain the factors inhibiting a complex approach to architectural design. It is shown that the solution of such a problem requires the formulation of a theoretical paradigm possessing its own postulates, axioms and speaking the language of the architect. The notion of ‘type’, transformed in a ‘generic type’, embodying’ multifaceted knowledge is put forward as a concept in the way to defining a design process. The typology embodies an important applicability potential, which, associated with that of the computer, namely; expert systems and case based reasoning, may contribute to the decisive integration of the physical factors of the environment in the process of architectural design.

summary Wood differs from most building materials in that it is a naturally grown biological tissue. Thus wood displays significant differentiation in its material makeup and structure as compared to most industrially produced, isotropic materials. Upon closer examination wood can be described as an anisotropic natural fiber system with different material characteristics and related behavior in different directions relative to the main grain orientation. Because of its differentiated internal capillary structure wood is also hygroscopic. It absorbs and releases moisture in exchange with the environment and these fluctuations cause differential dimensional changes. In architectural history the inherent heterogeneity of wood and the related more complex material characteristics have been mainly understood as a major deficiency by the related crafts, timber industry, engineers and architects alike. This paper will present an alternative design approach and associated computational design tools that aim at understanding wood’s differentiated material make up as its major capacity rather than a deficiency. Along two design experiments the related research on an integral computational design approach towards unfolding wood’s intrinsic material characteristics and performative capacity will be discussed. The first experiment explores the anisotropic characteristics of wood by exploiting the differential bending behavior in relation to the local induction of forces through which a specific overall morphology can be achieved. The second experiment focuses on the hygroscopic property of wood as the base for developing a surface structure that responds to changes in relative humidity with no need for any additional electronic or mechanical control.

title Architect Friendly: A Comparison of Ten Different Building Performance Simulation Tools

summary Performance Simulation tools BPS is available internationally. The users of those tools are mainly researchers, physicists and experts who value empirical validation, analytical verification and calibration of uncertainty as defined by e.g. BESTEST. However, literature and comparative surveys indicate that most architects who use BPS tools in design practice are much more concerned with the (1) Usability and Information Management (UIM) of interface and (2) the Integration of Intelligent design Knowledge-Base (IIKB). Those two issues are the main factors for identifying a building simulation program as “Architect Friendly”. Now, with the advancement of BPS tools and the recent announcements of direct links between BIM or non-BIM modeling tools and BPS tools it is important to compare the existing programs. Based on an online survey, this paper presents the results of comparing ten major BPS tools. The following programs are compared: ECOTECT, HEED, Energy 10, Design Builder, eQUEST, DOE-2, Green Building Studio, IES VE, Energy Plus and Energy Plus-SketchUp Plugin (OpenStudio). With 249 valid responses, the survey ranked the tools in three classes and revealed that architects seek the IIKB above the UIM of the interface. Finally, the paper summarizes the key findings and underlines the major requirements for future improvement and development of BPS tools, mainly from an architectural perspective.

summary Residential property value is affected by several factors during its useful time. . These factors include people’s lifestyles, traditions and culture, and the way they live and interact with the built environment. The property characteristics such as its location, building quality, adaptability, and energy efficiency would also have an impact on the property value. On the other hand, the nD CAD research that emerged in the late 1990s proposed endless dimensions of CAD modelling that would incorporate the building regulations’ requirements, basic user needs and client requirements. However, there is a need to implement lifelong parameters that would have significant effect on the property value in 3D models during the early stages of design. This can be done through a knowledge base integrated into a 3D model and links the lifelong property’s and the user’s characteristics with the property’s value. A survey was carried out on banks and Real Estate Development Fund (REDF) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to find out the level of impact of lifelong users and property characteristics on the property’s value. The results of the survey showed a number of lifelong property and user driven parameters that may have major impact on the property’s value. The implementation of lifelong parameters in nD CAD models would have a number of benefits. It would provide the decision makers such as banks and investors with a tool to assess the level of impact of possible lifelong factors on the property value and consider alternative schemes. Designers would use it during the early stages of design to produce optimum design solutions that provide an adequate product that is evaluated regarding its lifelong value to the end users. Eventually it would provide a comfortable environment that is tailored to the user’s needs and aspirations, while reserving the property’s lifelong value.

summary The paper which is proposed here will introduce an ongoing research project aiming to research data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. To address the increasing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires a multidisciplinary approach to urban analysis. This research is an attempt to establish a link between knowledge discovery methodologies and automated urban feature analysis. Therefore, in the scope of this research we apply data mining methodologies for urban analysis. Data mining is defined as to extract important patterns and trends from raw data (Witten and Frank, 2005). When applied to discover relationships between urban attributes, data mining can constitute a methodology for the analysis of multi-dimensional relational complexity of urban environments (Gil, Montenegro, Beirao and Duarte, 2009) The theoretical motivation of the research is derived by the lack of explanatory urban knowledge which is an issue since 1970’s in the area of urban research. This situation is mostly associated with deductive methods of analysis. The analysis of urban system from the perspective of few interrelated factors, without considering the multi-dimensionality of the system in a deductive fashion was not been explanatory enough. (Jacobs, 1961, Lefebvre, 1970 Harvey, 1973) To address the multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban environments requires the consideration of diverse spatial, social, economic, cultural, morphological, environmental, political etc. features of urban entities. The main claim is that, in urban analysis, there is a need to advance from traditional one dimensional (Marshall, 2004) description and classification of urban forms (e.g. Land-use maps, Density maps) to the consideration of the simultaneous multi-dimensionality of urban systems. For this purpose, this research proposes a methodology consisting of the application of data mining as a knowledge discovery method into a GIS based conceptual urban database built out of official real data of Beyoglu. Generally, the proposed methodology is a framework for representing and analyzing urban entities represented as objects with properties (attributes). It concerns the formulation of an urban entity’s database based on both available and non-available (constructed from available data) data, and then data mining of spatial and non-spatial attributes of the urban entities. Location or position is the primary reference basis for the data that is describing urban entities. Urban entities are; building floors, buildings, building blocks, streets, geographically defined districts and neighborhoods etc. Urban attributes are district properties of locations (such as land-use, land value, slope, view and so forth) that change from one location to another. Every basic urban entity is unique in terms of its attributes. All the available qualitative and quantitative attributes that is relavant (in the mind of the analyst) and appropriate for encoding, can be coded inside the computer representation of the basic urban entity. Our methodology is applied by using the real and official, the most complex, complete and up-to-dataset of Beyoglu (a historical neighborhood of Istanbul) that is provided by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). Basically, in our research, data mining in the context of urban data is introduced as a computer based, data-driven, context-specific approach for supporting analysis of urban systems without relying on any existing theories. Data mining in the context of urban data; • Can help in the design process by providing site-specific insight through deeper understanding of urban data. • Can produce results that can assist architects and urban planners at design, policy and strategy levels. • Can constitute a robust scientific base for rule definition in urban simulation applications such as urban growth prediction systems, land-use simulation models etc. In the paper, firstly we will present the framework of our research with an emphasis on its theoretical background. Afterwards we will introduce our methodology in detail and finally we will present some of important results of data mining analysis processed in Rapid Miner open-source software. Specifically, our research define a general framework for knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis and enable the usage of GIS and data mining as complementary applications in urban feature analysis. summary The use of a design tool materializing the performative design concept is presented. The association of parametric design with lighting intentions leads to a light-based parametric design approach. This approach have been implemented through an inverse natural lighting model which is intended to aid the daylight design (windows, shading devices or others) in the early stages of architectural design. We show this model can be used in a performative design approach to define the transparency property through a case study: the dome of the Louvre Abu Dhabi museum by Ateliers Jean Nouvel.

summary We present an example of parametric modeling of a large span roof and discuss a parametric approach to integrating performance oriented design in the conceptual phase of the design process. In the case study shown here, architectural geometry is related to structural morphology; as part of a larger process, its parameterization aims at supporting further performance related investigations, including thermal aspects, by meaning of both the large scale investigation and a more detailed level of design.

title Modelling Behaviour of Configurable VR Applications

summary Creation of complex behaviour-rich and meaningful content is one of the main difficulties that currently limit wide use of virtual reality technologies in everyday applications. To enable widespread use of VR applications new methods of content creation must be developed. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to designing behaviour-rich virtual reality applications, called Flex-VR. The approach enables building configurable VR applications, in which content can be easily created and modified by domain experts or even common users without knowledge about VR design and computer programming. The VR content is configured from reusable programmable content elements, called VR-Beans. Appearance and behaviour of the VR-Beans are controlled by scripts programmed in a novel high-level language, called VR-BML (Behaviour Modelling Language). The language enables specification of generic behaviours of objects that can be dynamically composed into virtual scenes. The paper introduces the Flex-VR component and content models, describes the VR-BML language and provides an example of a Flex-VR application in the cultural heritage domain.

summary The study reports an application of VR models in the assessment of a part of physical planning project. The project outputs were different reports, GIS data and maps, and CAD drawings. The GIS data were used to create the VR models by importing Shpfiles of the GIS project outputs to VR software. The study presents VR models and the assessment of the physical planning project in terms of: 1) effect of the population increase, 2) effect of the required residential units, and 3) quality assurance for the current situation and future situation. The method used to build up the VR Models was through satellite images (by Google Earth Pro) and VR software (by UC Win/Road). Different models were built up to visualize and assess the alternative solutions and various influential factors. The study employed Virtual Reality in various urban and planning problems through models that are employed as tools of communication and design. The visualized environment and the associated models facilitated the evaluation of important areas, namely: impact of different factors and alternative solutions. The study concludes that the processes, such as decision making, visualization and representation, performed through VR manifest its importance to different design phases of urban and physical planning.

summary The emergence of parametric generative design tools and prototyping manufacturing technology led to radical changes in architectural morphologies. This change increased the opportunity to develop innovative smart geometries. Integrating these algorithms in the parametric softwares led to variations in building design concepts increasing alternatives and decreasing the repetitive work previously needed in conventional CAD software. The chosen software in this research is Generative Components (GC). It is a software design tool for an associative and parametric design platform. It is tested for using Global Variables with associative functions during the concept creation and form GC comprises features. The results presented in this research may be considered an introduction to the smart geometry revolution. It deals with the generative design which applied in the design process from conceptual design phase, defining the problem, exploring design solutions, then how to develop the design phases. Office building is a building type which encourages new forms that needs computational processes to deal with repetitive functions and modular spaces and enclosed in a flexible creative structural skin. Generative design helps the office buildings to be arranged, analysed, and optimized using parameters in early stages in design process. By the end of the research, the use of the smart geometry in a high rise office building is defined and explained. The research is divided into three parts, first a summary of the basic theories of office buildings design and the sustainable requirements that affect it, and should be integrated. Secondly, the previous experiences in generating office buildings by Norman foster and Sergio Araya. At last, a case study is proposed to test and evaluate the use of the parametric generative methodology in designing an office building with specific emphasis on the function, environmental aspects and form generation using Generative Components (GC) Software.
