summary This paper discusses an educational approach emphasizing the changing role of mathematics and potentials of mathematical thinking in architectural education on the course of changing design paradigm: from designing the product to designing the process. In this context, randomly selected samples of student works, realized within the context of an elective undergraduate course, Arch 333 “Mathematics in Architecture” at Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkiye are presented. It is shown that mathematical thinking provide not only to science people a solid ground for further explorations, but also new inspirations to people involving art and design and help them to overcome prejudices and fears related with mathematics in their minds. It is believed that this approach encourages them to discuss complex problems with meta language of mathematics and develop ability to consider the design process as a whole.

What new scenarios would emerge in contemporary architecture when the access to a multidimensional architectural database is open and it is written and visited by anyone, anywhere in earth? Internet evolution is fast and unpredictable, propelling deep changes at different levels of our society. Spinoffs, unexpected outcomes are result of those changes, unfolding uncertain, unstable scenarios. This paper discusses the question of what could be the way to organize the process of registering, documenting and online publishing, native digital, three-dimensional content of Architecture, assuming the critical issue of information integration.

title Beyond Traditional CAAD: E-Learning supporting design thinking

summary A study based on a post-occupancy-evaluation (POE), conducted in housing developments in the region of Campinas, Brazil, evaluated quality of life and sustainability indicators. These indicators were then related to site planning design guideline for low-income public housing projects that considered recommendations for integrated community and security, street and path system and parking, public and private open space and landscaping. Since this work is part of a broader study, which aims to develop evaluation tools, the proposed design guidelines were used by students in a graduate class, in order to verify its effectiveness. Bloom’s Taxonomy was used to determine educational goals for design thinking in this class. First design thinking was instigated based on students’ prior knowledge of life quality and sustainability indicators for housing design. Comprehension of proposed design guidelines was stimulated by the reading and discussion of related literature, paraphrasing or extension of proposed design guidelines and respective illustration with reference images. An existing low-income housing development, with award winning design, was selected and an evaluation of its conformance to proposed design guidelines was conducted comparing site or design images to reference images. This evaluation subsidized a design exercise for the selected housing development. The class was offered as a partially distance course with an agenda including: tutorials, theoretical classes, seminars and conceptual discussions. A new Brazilian open source e-learning environment was experimented and critiqued. Beyond traditional CAAD tools others such as wiki, blog, polls, chat, conferencing, web authoring and visit broadcasting supported collaborative learning and design. Results indicate the viability of design teaching in distance education courses for competent designers; however the experience shows the need for innovation in synchronous communication and visualization tools specific for architectural design users. Students evaluation of selected housing development and final projects indicate that the proposed guidelines for low-income public housing projects successfully supports the decision making process in order to incorporate quality of life and sustainability indicators in design. The experience presents a model of design education which incorporates technology integrated to human and environmental dimensions.

summary The architectural office of Herzog & de Meuron (HdM) started in 1978 and has grown to a company of about 330 employees. Besides the two founding partners who participate in every project there are nine additional partners who take responsibility for individual projects. Furthermore, the office collaborates with artists and outside experts of various fields to support and enhance the available knowledge and skills. The partners ensure that each project has a distinct and unique identity and is well adapted to its environment. This emphasis on the uniqueness of a project characterizes the design philosophy of HdM.The growth of the office and the size and complexity of the projects has demanded continuous adaptation of the office structure. The amount of required data is increasing exponentially, while the design cycles are, generally, becoming shorter. The challenge is to find the right tools and media. HdM does not restrict itself to the realm of digital tools but, rather, uses all possible media: hand sketches in pencil, together with diagrams, drawings, and images, as well as physical and digital models.

summary The introduction of Rapid Prototyping technology such as 3D printers and diverse Numerically Controlled machines such as laser cutters and milling machines, has made it obvious for many educational institutions, that a paradigm shift is occurring these years, that will forever change the design- and architectural practice, - for better or worse. This paper discusses the current change of role and status of the representation as a means to communicate design in the digital era. It outlines two opposite directions for the development of software technology, and brings forward previous and current research, on the didactic aspects of introducing digital software into the curriculum of architecture and design education. The paper describes a workshop held at the Danish Design School, where students proficient in using digital media, were challenged to use analogue models instead, to rediscover and utilize some of the creative potentials offered by this medium. Two other workshops discussing similar themes with different foci and different participants have been held since. One hosted by the Glass & Ceramic School on Bornholm, where the students are trained as traditional Craftsmen and another hosted by Nordes2009 at AHO in Oslo, where the participants came with a background in the research community. My own research interest lies in establishing or refueling a discussion on the importance of the ambiguity in a physical representation, as opposed to the finite interpretations offered by the digital modeling environment, that the profession is accustomed to work within. This interest has recently been confirmed and renewed by reading “The (soft) Architecture Machine(s)” from 1970+75 and by studying the works of Professor Julio Bermudez and Professor Bennett Neiman.

summary In the field of architecture, computational design has emerged as sub-discipline having a multidisciplinary nature and using computing methods and capabilities to understand and solve architectural design problems. Computational design is based on computational thinking that includes a range of mental tools in solving problems, designing systems, and understanding human behavior. It has drawn on the concepts of mathematics and computer science. Computational design elements are derived from both theoretical science and experimental design in such a way that its mechanism relies heavily on mathematical logic, but once built, experimentation is done by varying one parameter at a time to study individual changes. It is a design model, not design itself. Computational design involves applying appropriate computational mechanisms, algorithms, or methods to architecture in order to solve design problems and develop design applications. This process creates systems that can be used as design tools for exploring and forming entirely new design concepts and strategies. Over the next decade, computation will have a great impact on design world. It will solve more complex design problems with greater accuracy and be applied by more designers more routinely—it will go deeper and wider. However, the greatest change that it will bring is the breaking down of barriers between scientific domains and design, enabling real “design science.” Computation is already a key driver in “joined-up” research. It forces scientists and designers to think deeper and wider. Some people have considered it to be the enemy of creativity. In their opinion, designers simply must do things rather than think about what they are doing and how they are doing it. Deeper thinking is associated with scientific rather than designer thinking. The fact is that some of the most innovative and creative work is being done by people who have developed computational thinking skills and know other disciplines along with computing. The theme of eCAADe 2009 conference, Computation: The New Realm of Architectural Design, is devoted to exploring the ramifications of this view for the domain of design: research, education, and practice. We believe that the most intriguing research questions that will emerge from the advent of new and more powerful computational devices—and from the design tools that make use of them—will be in the realm of developmental design science.

summary A review of national government literature indicates that today’s knowledge-driven economy demands a workforce equipped with complex skills and attitudes. Examples of these skills and attitudes are general problems solving, meta-cognitive skills, critical thinking and lifelong learning. Reviews of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry indicates a gap between architecture practice and education. The Egan report states that there is a need for a change of style, culture and process within the construction industry and it identified five driving forces, the report also recognised that the achievement of these driving forces is linked to training and education. Education must not only teach the necessary technical skills and knowledge, but also the culture of teamwork, collaborative work and creativity. The construction boom in the United Arab Emirates combined with the country’s mission to highly educate and train its nationals to be able to tackle market challenges provoked the necessity of implementing the culture of creativity and collaboration in education system. On the other hand, use of technology in education has been proven to facilitate and enhance the learning process. This paper will highlight the importance of implementing the virtual design studio as a technlogical platform in architecture education in the UAE in a way that aims to promote the culture of creativity and collaboration through the use of technology.

summary The aim of the following paper is to show a method of digital reconstruction and analysis of an important artifact pertaining to the Abruzzo cultural heritage, the ‘trabocco’. In fact recent software for graphics and architecture, such as CAD, graphics editor, and those dedicated to three-dimensional modeling and rendering are tools that open new opportunities in the study of cultural heritage artifacts, The more the complexity of the object to study, the more the advantages for their use. A formal and structural complexity characterize the trabocchi, pile constructions typical of the Abruzzo coast, that go back to the middle of XVII century and the subject of this study is the trabocco of Punta Turchinio, the most famous and complex of the coast. Among the digital reconstruction’s objectives there are: Increase the knowledge of the ‘trabocco’ and generate a series of information necessary to define and manage a recovery plan; to study more deeply the technologic decomposition of the four main sub-systems with related abacus of the technological elements and create static and animated graphics restitutions such as renderings and animations to understand some spatial and formal characteristics.

summary In this paper we are to present a research, still in progress, whose main objective is the desire to develop and test an alternative method of surveying, representing and analyzing buildings that are part of a minor historical-artistic heritage. The instruments used and the proposed methodology want to give an alternative to other solutions such as 3D laser scanners and photogrammetry, which would be not only expensive, but also difficult to use in small and irregular spaces, typical of the old Italian villages. The case study that will be presented is Caporciano, a small medieval village in Abruzzo (a region at the centre of Italy), in the internal area of the region affected by a violent earth quake in 2009. This tragic event has put the spotlights on the problems and the fragility of these small villages, which represent an important local resource of cultural importance, and therefore must be preserved for the future generation. In order to properly act in these areas, it is necessary to thoroughly know the actions to be taken for its recovery or conservation, and the present methodology allows the creation of this knowledge made up of several drawings, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional.

summary This research aims at stimulating the exploration process in architectural design through the conception and the creation of a computational environment centered on a library of referents. Based on a specific way of describing the referents, as well as on the energizing role we wanted the library to play in the design process, we could draw the characteristics of such an environment. The representation of the referents is seen as a combination of descriptions in different format. Offered to students, it allows for new interpretations, for interaction with their content, and finally, for the integration of knowledge during the process of architectural exploration.

summary Today we portray designs with analytical systems and systems with the emerging terminology of computational design. Generative, intelligent, digital, parametric, associative, biomimetic designs sound valuable, whereas the integrity remains questionable. The tool, enabling designer to play with forms, patterns, models is neither granting him the knowledge nor teaching him the appropriate technique. Are we really able to digest and master all the information we’re subject to, to be used in our designs? Or do we have much to learn about the investigations of the renaissance men to reach to a level of proficiency?

summary Prototype manufacturing as an educational tool has been very successful at the college level in architecture and engineering design. This paper discusses an innovative inquiry-based learning approach rather than the problem-based learning models commonly utilized by other similar programs. For example, several research-funded technology projects (e.g., Cappelleri et al. 2007) look at involving students in problembased learning exercises (e.g., building robots); however, these exercises (while providing valuable experiences) have predetermined outcomes ingrained by the teachers, the project structure, and the components used to construct the devices. Therefore, inquisitive and creative problem solving is limited to the “kit-of-parts” in their approach to solving the problem. The inquiry-based CADCAM pedagogy model is more concerned with the process of solving a problem through the vehicle of prototyping than with the specificity of the design project itself. This approach has great potential. First, the need to solve the problem drives learning on multiple levels, integrating interdisciplinary ideas into the problem and solution. Second, the problem interlocks disciplines through inquiry knowledge building in team exercises. Finally, it encourages diversity and flexibility by allowing students to look at problems from multiples perspectives and points of view.

summary Donald Schön embraces a constructivist approach to learning and research., characterising designing as a reflective conversation between designer and the materials of a design situation. Accordingly, Schön’s views on digital design support are based on his valuing of indeterminacy, surprise and ambiguity as opportunities to develop new understanding and insight. His criticism of technical rationality is directed towards the privileging of formal and codified knowledge over embodied and tacit forms of knowing. While Schön’s work is increasingly acknowledged in recent CAAD research, respective publications typically remain within the technical rationality perspective. Based on several characteristic examples, this paper examines how Schön’s ideas are absorbed into a perspective incongruous to his own, concluding with a discussion of potential new research approaches that sustain Schön’s values.

summary Departing from a case analysis extracted from the context of didactic practices directed to the initial stages of Architectural Project learning, the necessity of limiting a conceptual net which expresses an updated geometric knowledge is assumed in order to sustain the characterization activity of the architectonic shape. For the case which was analyzed one identifies, through the light of traditional project approaches and from those originated from practices of digital graphic representations and shape grammars, a set of concepts and procedures that allows to explicit a knowledge structure considered able to support and strengthen the activity in question. Such structure is represented through conceptual maps that allow observing, visually, the amplification of concepts which in this study are identified with the geometric vocabulary and repertoire. It faces the necessity of recognizing a terminology to explicit such elements and, thus, experimenting the usage of established taxonomy in the context of architecture. In the present study, a metacognitive approach is added, associating practices of Geometric Modeling and Shape Grammars to the mechanisms of deductive and inductive metacognition, respectively. This perspective of analysis is proposed to contribute for the disciplinary integration: project and representation centered on the construction of a geometric vocabulary and repertoire to architecture.
